Hi all,
I use a MSI GE60 0ND, made last year. I need to connect the notebook to a CNC Router (Romaxx WD-1), which requires a parallel port connection. I've talked to the manufacturer of the machine and they offered one solution, but I am on the hunt for a cleaner option. One would think that a USB-Parallel Adapter Cable would work but unfortunately those are not a bi-directional connection and thus won't handle the real-time talking that will need to happen between the two machines. So where do I go? My machine has an SD Card reader, and a SATA-based optical DVD/CD bay, and I would gladly switch out either to create a parallel port. If MSI made a parallel port DVD bay insert for my notebook my solution would be there but my current situation may become more of a hackjob, which is fine. If that's the case, form factor would not be an issue and the adapter that I use could exist externally of the laptop. A PCMCIA Card to Parallel Adapter seems like a good option but my notebook does not host a slot for that either. I would need to turn my DVD bay into a PCMCIA Slot to solve that. Any thoughts or brains I can pick on this? I appreciate any help or references, thanks!

Hi, I'm going on Holiday soon and want to use my XDA Exec to view photos I take with my digital camera (beats taking the laptop along just to do that).
Now, I understand the Exec doesn't have Host functionality through the USB port, so is there any other way of getting the photos off a Sony Memorystick and onto the XDA?
I've looked around for a USB Host SDIO card and can't find one (not sure the XDA Exec would support it anyway).
Anyone got any suggestions?
TIA
I'm not 100% sure, but I think I saw a device in PC World that looked like a USB hub, but it was for connecting digital cameras to USB memory sticks, however I only briefly looked at the picture on the box and didn't check it out closely.
Might be worth asking at PC World though in case I didn't imagine it. For gods sake don't mention the exec to the staff there, as they are completely incapable of thinking, but if it would work for a memory stick it might be able to work for the exec, especially as there is a thread around here about making the exec appear as usb memory to a PC.
I found this link http://homepage.mac.com/techedgeezine/2004-0624_syncbox1.htm
and

At the very worst you'd have to get one of these and a small SD card reader to plug into the USB stick slot.
I have the same problem.
Another device is the Delkin USB Bridge:

Similar idea but the Macally SyncBox allows you to copy a subset of the files by storing them in a folder called SyncBox though you won't be able to move files into that folder on most digital cameras.
If you want to turn your PDA into a USB mass storage device get a USB sync cable and this software:
http://www.softick.com/pocket-pc/cardexport2/
The problem I have with the USB bridge type devices is that they copy everything. I have a Vosonic 6230 MultiMedia Viewer:
http://www.vosonic.com/index.php?PA=product&id=10&kind_id=12
It's a portable HD with multi-card reader. So basically you can copy files from MS card to HD and then from HD to SD card. Not as cheap or light as a USB bridge but you can also use it as extra storage for your PDA and camera or a video player which can connect to a TV.
Looking on Macally site, they now have SyncBox II which allows you to copy individual files:
http://www.macally.com/spec/usb/input_device/syncbox2.html
Why don't more manufacturers implement USB host? It would make PDAs a lot more useful.
The SyncBox II isn't available yet but Memorex have 2 similar devices - one with multi-card reader, one without:

But I don't think it's currently available from a UK retailer.
Hi there,
I have taken lots of useful information from this forum and I must say it is definitely the best forum for wizards in the net!
Now my question:
I am going on vacation on Saturday I have a mobile 250 GB HDD which stores all my music collection. I do not want to take my laptop with me. Is there a way to transfer my music from the mobile HDD to the miniSD card in my Wizard without using the laptop? Can the Resco Explorer and a USB hub help me with that? ANY useful suggestion welcome.
Thanks in advance!
Rgds
Lars
nope...
Sorry, it's not gonna happen. USB works on a client - master relationship and the HD and Wizard are both clients. Without a device to work as a master (eg a computer, some PMPs) between them, no communication can take place.
Servus
what is a PMP?
what is a PMP?

PMP stands for Portable Media Player. It would be cool though if there would be software available to give the wizard USB Host controller support. Don't know if that is difficult to do.
Cheers,

Yeah, to be honest I'm pretty surprised that this can't be done; is there some fundamental reason why its not been done?
Also, can I print stuff off my device yet? I know I can't plug a printer in, but can i print to a bluetooth printer?
you can print via IR to HP printers, that I know.
Is there no workaround to connect to a mobile HDD? I can control my PC with my Wizard but I can not access a mobile HDD???
How about emulating a USB Host controller? Any ideas?
I believe you actually need a piece of hardware for a device to act as a USB controller, not just software.
What peice of hardware would that be?

I knew that question was going to come up with my phrasing.
"Piece of hardware" here refers to an actual chip, like those found on your PC motherboards to act as a USB controller. In short, there is absolutely nothing that you can buy and plug into a Wizard to have it act as a controller. There is a CompactFlash USB controller somewhere, but I heard it's rather unreliable and slow. Plus, it's CF only, and we don't have a CF slot
We do have a CF slot but we just don't show it anybody
I'm sure if you took a mini SD to micro SD conerter, a soldering iron and some pieces of wire you could wire up a compact flash jobby. You could probably take the compact flash plug thing to bits and re-weire it to a mini SD one.
I rather carry my laptop LOL.
Thanks anyway.
Happy new year everyone
I have question; I have search high and low and have not found the answer, so I thought I would come to the source of all knowledge and information about HTC.
Can you connect a thumb drive to HTC hermes?
not as a thumb drive, but a thumb drive to HTC hermes as external drive
thank you
Jim
USB Thumbdrives
AFAIK, it is not possible as the USB port on Hermes is passive (ie - it can't drive USB hardware and even if it did, it wouldn't have a driver).
If you've got a wireless AP on your desktop tho - you could install the network folder patch on Hermes and connect to a "shared" USB thumbnail drive hosted on your desktop...
only Athena and flame support usb host
thanks for the reply and information; that what I thought, but never hurt to ask the question.
thanks again
Here's a "equivalency" solution.
Buy a microSD card (they are dirt cheap nowadays anyway) and buy the smallest USB card reader you can find.
Use the microSD+cardreader as a thumb drive. Whenever you need to use it on your phone, remove the microSD and put it in your phone.
I'm just contemplating whether it would be possible to hard-wire a MicroSD card reader into the Xoom 2.
I've seen threads about trying to add the oem reader onto the motherboard, but what I'm thinking is (firstly testing) that a 2-way usb splitter will allow a usb microSD reader and a sync cable to work at the same time.
If they work fine, then surely splitting open the housings of the splitter and card reader, and soldering all connections instead of chunky usb plugs, then breaking the connection from the MoBo to the current usb out and instead connecting it to one of the splitter's outputs?
Perhaps behind the void microSD port cover would be just enough space to fit the circuitry?
Anyone's thoughts?! I know it's far easier to brainstorm something like this than it is to actually do such a fiddly job, but would it be possible? I saw on the Advent Vega forums (A crappy tablet I also have) the same thing has been done to hardwire a USB modem. Apparently the case of that device has just enough space to squeeze it all in.
Perhaps this has already been done?
This isn't going to end well lol
Good luck though and don't forget to YouTube your efforts for bragging rights and our praises!

Hi All
First post here so be kind!!!
I am in need of a tablet (10 inch) running Android or Windows that has in internal bay with a USB within that bay. The USB also needs to be a full USB Host and not locked down by the manufacturer as some like Archos do, which, while I could unlock the Android and remove the restrictions this would no doubt invalidate the warranty.
Archos do one (101) which is ideal, it has a bay at the back which when uncliped reveals a USB port and space for a dongle, but as I said above the USB host only allows the Archos 3G dongle so that is no good.
I am wanting to put an RFID reader into the device, ideally internally. The RFID Reader is a dongle about the size of standard USB memory stick and simply works as an input device like a keyboard.
Alternatively does anyone know a decent tablet with 125 mHz LF ASK RFID Reader already fitted internally?
I am not looking for anything that is super powerful, it simply needs to run a web page and read RF transponders.
Thanks for any help or ideas
