Ok, so I just upgraded to the Note 3 from my old Note 2. So far, I have found every app/widget I used to use, or a suitable replacement. However, there is one that I am stuck on. On my Note 2, there was a great stock Contacts widget that Samsung has failed to include on the Note 3. I have check the Play store and cannot find anything close to it. What I want to know is this. Is there any way to export that widget and use it on my Note 3? I'd love either that widget, or if anyone knows of a contact widget that is similar, I would be all ears. Thanks!

Hi,
I hope I am adhereing to Forum 'etiquette' here.
I've taken ownership of an X10 on Monday, after having experience of the iPhone. First impressions are 'I hate it' in capital letters... I just can't get used to it and have a number of annoyances.
I'm hoping this is a case of user error as some of this forum users seem to think it walks on water, so apologies for this, but a few questions
1) Is there a recommended set up? It is currently configured as it was out of the box
2) Android App Store - I don't want to register for a google email account that I'll never use, do I have to? Can I not access a full app store online via the web?
3) I find the bundled Sat Nav useless... It can't ever find my current location.
4) I really miss the 'notification' of the iPhone, the little red number when you've got a text, facebook update, missed call etc. Timescape does not replace this as it constantly updates and my phone is always on silent 8-6 every day so I'm missing calls, messages and notifications.
5) Recommended apps?
6) Battery Life... I've hardly used the thing today, yet its used nearly 75% of the battery life and I've made 2 calls, a little bit of Facebook and 4 text messages.
7) Any general recommendations?
At this moment, I really am close to sending this back (7 day trial) and getting a HTC Desire or going back to the iPhone.
Thanks in advance
Stuart
1) Is there a recommended set up? It is currently configured as it was out of the box
Unlike the iPhone, Android allows you to configure and personalize your phone as you like, what recommended setup are you looking for ? I have disabled Timescape and use handcent/K-9 for SMS/Email, though I still find Mediascape the best media player.
2) Android App Store - I don't want to register for a google email account that I'll never use, do I have to? Can I not access a full app store online via the web?
To use Googles Android market you do need a Google ID. I have never used mine to send email and it is only used for the Google applications I have downloaded. I only ever registered an Apple ID to be ableto download apps from the Itunes App store.
3) I find the bundled Sat Nav useless... It can't ever find my current location.
Have you got the GPS switched on ? My X10 locks onto GPS faster than my iPhone ever did. Download Google Maps.
4) I really miss the 'notification' of the iPhone, the little red number when you've got a text, facebook update, missed call etc. Timescape does not replace this as it constantly updates and my phone is always on silent 8-6 every day so I'm missing calls, messages and notifications.
These appear in the 'notification' drag down at the top of the screen. I prefer them to the iPhone as they stay there until I decide to clear them.
5) Recommended apps?
See other thread for this.
6) Battery Life... I've hardly used the thing today, yet its used nearly 75% of the battery life and I've made 2 calls, a little bit of Facebook and 4 text messages.
Wait a week or so, battery does improve and should improve further after the next firmware update in the next week or so. The X10 has a much more powerful processor than the iPhone so does use more battery, but having used the phone for a month I actually find that the battery lasts longer than the iPhone, although it does take longer to top-up and recharge.
7) Any general recommendations?
Use it, play with it, get used to it. Android is so different to the iPhone that it does take some getting used to. I personally love Android as it allows me to customize and personalize my phone far beyond what the iPhone allowed me to do.
At this moment, I really am close to sending this back (7 day trial) and getting a HTC Desire or going back to the iPhone.
The majority of the issues you raise above, you would also find on the HTC Desire.
Thanks for the reply, I just wondered whether there was a standard set up that most users used, seems not.
One final question;
There are far too many apps that I'll never use that I don't seem to be able to uninstall... E.g. I've got the Mail app, Google Mail and Moxier Mail... I'm only ever going to want one of these.
I haven't a clue what the Moxier things do full stop mind you, and I don't want GoogleTalk for example.
Is there a way to un-install or hide the ones I don't want?
And can I re-arrange apps, e.g. bring my Facebook onto the 4 icons you have on the homepage.
Sorry if this all sounds picky, I just want the customisation I'm used too.
"Is there a way to un-install or hide the ones I don't want?"
Not yet. We need to be able to root the device. (Like jailbreak on Iphone)
"And can I re-arrange apps, e.g. bring my Facebook onto the 4 icons you have on the homepage."
Press and hold on whatever icon you want to move.

Many of the pre-installed apps are not possibile to un-install. But if you load other mail apps then it will ask you which is the default mail app you want to use. The apps themselves take up such a small amount of space that you don't need to worry too much if you don't want to use them. Moxier etc are primarily used to access work/exchange email. There are many on here who are desperate to delete them but I have no real problem with them.
To add apps to your homescreen, just select he app in your app menu, hold onto it and drag it upto your homescreen. With default Android you have three homescreens to organise and you can add app shortcuts to any of these. From any homescreen, press and hold in an empty space and it will then ask which shortcut/app or widget you need to place there.
My own Android app whinge is that I cannot reorganize the apps in my app page, they are always displayed in the alphabetical order of whatever the developer has decided to name them.
Once we have root (jailbreak for android phones), we should be able to get rid of most of the unwanted apps that came pre-installed.
If those are the annoyances you are talking about, then the Desire won't fix anything because almost all of those "problems" are with android itself.
Battery life isn't much better on the Desire and the GPS is insanely quick to get a lock on almost everyone else's handsets.
I also wasn't aware that the iPhone was customizable...
Use Navigon for GPS navigation. Its by far the best for Android, similar to iGo & Tom Tom. Its also free if you know where to look! ;-)
Also make sure you turn GPS on and off when its used from the settings menu as it can drain battery. A-GPS also helps lock on as it uses the internet to track satalites positions for start up.
Just got my phone last week. Trying to get it configured to my liking.
I keep having to resort bookmarks when I add a new bookmark, restart the browser, or power up the phone. Can anyone confirm if this is the norm on this device? I've tried resetting the browser to default with no change. This is driving me nuts. Great phone otherwise. Thank-you
there is an app in the market that will let you sort your bookmarks in any order. you can also save the bookmarks on your sd card with the app. it's called:
Bookmark Sort & Backup
Re: Sorting Bookmarks
This will work for my needs. I was hoping maybe mine was just faulty as I dislike using apps for something the phone "should" be capable of doing. But yeah, I did buy the ad free app version. Thank you so much for your suggestion.
Yep... This bugged the heck out of me too, especially the way I had to re-sort every time I went into the browser. More annoying was the way it made the full-screen HTC Widget bookmark (which I love, and find is the best and quickest way to get to my favorite sites) always be ordered by most recently added too!
Thankful for Bookmarks S&B, it really solved the issue. Hoping any future Inc updates though will fix this issue. I did notice on the HTC EVO, which is pretty similar when it comes to browser and widgets, didn't exhibit the problem within the browser... if you sorted alphabetically it would stay like that, but it DID exhibit the issue within the widget.
My issue is related to this, but not exactly the same. I just recently got a replacement Incredible, and I want to transfer my bookmarks off my old Incredible to my new Incredible. I've tried to find where the bookmarks file is located via Astro but am unable to locate it. Do I need root to do this? Or am I just not looking in the right place? Any other alternatives?
Someone else will most likely chime in with something simpler. But the way I transferred my bookmarks from myTouch to Incredible was with Backup Pro. I backup everything I need on there, minus contacts.
I'd like to see the ability to create folders like, News, Sports, Technical and put bookmarks in them rather than just have a flat list of bookmarks.
Seems strange not to have what is a common feature in the browser.
SubMatrix, I didn't have any luck backing up my bookmarks with BookmarkSB Pro. It kept giving me an error. It would certainly be a cheaper alternative if it works. I couldn't find anything that says whether you have to be rooted or not.
As for sorting into folders or similar, I believe the solution for that is probably right around the corner. Bookmark-Tree may help something like that.
Try xmarks been using it for pc/droid sync

This is a second request so that if some great mind here can help me install the s planner from note 2 to my rooted note 3
Please consider me a noob and give step by step instructions.
Please . This new s planner is such a waste.

as far as I can tell, GNIII S Planner is the same as GNII's, but only with different color theme. they replaced the 3D brown theme with a simpler white/green flat theme.
Only difference I realized is in the Month view, it now shows dots (one per event) instead of showing the even title itself, which was not even practical as it showed only first word or so, and only 2 events. all you have to do is to click the day and show details below.
it is not a waste. but just themed differently, however I can understand if some people like the old shape, I certainly do. but functionality wise, almost the same.
There is huge amouny of difference between the s planner of note 2 and note 3. The most important beibg
1. When adding event or task in the older s planner there were options to add a S NOTE or an image . It was productive and practical for daily use.
2. Hovering the s pen over a date in month view, an option to add a handwritten note appeared which again was so productive and practical.
Both the above options are missing in the newer s planner.
Hence the request.

I can not believe Samsung removed the Task widget on de Note 3 (along with other functionalities on the whole S-Planner) .... It was the most useful tool to me and I assumed for granted It would be on the Note 3 ... I can hardly imagine the reasoning sequence that led the programmers to think that S-Planner was too good and complete so it needed to be shrunk
I, too, would like to know how to do this. See also this thread for more information.
Here are the steps I did:
1) Rooted GN3 using Root de la Vega method
2) Mounted /system as R/W (using ES File Explorer - Root Explorer)
3) Renamed GN3 Splanner to SPlanner_gn3.apk
4) Copied Note 2 S Planner apk to Note 3 /system/app directory
5) Changed its permission to 644 (rw-r--r--)
6) Rebooted
Despite this, I still don't see the GN2 version of SPlanner anywhere (not in the list of apps, drawer, etc.). When I click on the SPlanner shortcut, it still brings up the GN3 version. What steps am I missing?

I think you need to move the original apk out of /system/app - the app id is defined in the manifest and is independent of the file name. In this case the package name is com.android.calendar. If you add the S Planner apk from Note 2 and keep the original apk (althougth renamed) it will still be a duplicate package name.

I don't even see an "S Planner" in my app drawer. What are you guys talking about?

Thanks for the advice. I moved the original GN3 apk out of /system/app and then rebooted again. However, I still cannot open the GN2 SPlanner on the GN3. It simply doesn't show up anywhere. Would wiping the dalvik cache help?
Anyone with any solution?

Unfortunately, I don't think the GN2 SPlanner will run on the GN3. It could be an issue of a Samsung software signature not matching. As I wrote, I tried basically everything I could think of to try and get it to work, with no luck. Hopefully, someone else out there has a solution.
There's three things about the GN3 version that I don't like:
1) Full-screen mode. Ugh...how am I supposed to see what time it is and the battery level? Yes, I know can temporarily touch the top of the screen to have it display the status bar, but this is only temporary.
2) Inability to set default reminder time. Now everything defaults to 15 minutes, which results in me having to set the reminder for each new task manually. Total pain.
3) I don't like how they changed the month view. I preferred the GN2 version where I saw both a listing of the day's tasks inside each day box, as well as listed below.
Time to go look at an alternative 3rd-party solution, I guess...
same issue- slightly different question?-noob
GS3 w/ OS 4.4 safestrap - touchwhiz rom- somehow all my system apps like splanner/ clock and gone- they are in several backups on my internal and external (SD) and i can see them in root explorer - how can i get them to load- I am a total noob- patience and language for a 5 year old is needed, thanks !

Hi!
Not so sure should this be on Apps section or here at Q&A, but anyway..
I watched some videos from Youtube about Note 4.
I saw this clip and thought that this is a must for my Note 3 (and NP12.2)
I downloaded some app dump from Note 4, just couldn't find Action Memo from there (to install it instead of stock Note 3 version)
Do you think that app can be ported or somehow get to work on Note 3, or maby add this feature to Note 3 stock Action Memo.
I really want that pinning option to my phone, so I can add memos directly and easily to my homescreen. That video linked above starts just before he does what I want to my Note 3.
Hi! So I've had this wonderful watch for a few days. Finally getting everything set up, having to use Nova and custom actions, didn't like any of the clockskin faces.
Anyway, a couple of things that I can't figure out and might be related to other watches like this:
1) Google Fit won't count steps. The pedometer is on in settings, when I install the app it updates and shows the steps from my phone. But then, nothing. Doesn't update at all. Is there a workaround? Maybe use another pedometer app to link to Fit?
2) Google Fit and a few other apps I tried can't read the heartrate sensor that the built in (bad) app can. Is there a workaround?
I think all my problems are that this watch doesn't know it's a watch, it thinks it's a phone. I wish we could get custom ROMs on this, I'd seriously pay 30 bucks for someone to get Wear / Open Wear on this!
Sorry, I don't have any workarounds for the Google Fit issues. I do have a question though, how are you getting the watch notifications to show? I installed Nova as well and can't seem to get any of the system notifications to show.
I too would be happy to pay for a ROM.
