[Q] Micro USB port broke, is root still possible? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Awhile back my N4 charging port crapped out on me and is no longer working. It will not charge through a cord whatsoever and ADB doesn't pick it up. I wanted to know if I have any chance to root it. Or really just install CyanogenMod. Any hope? Thanks!

You will need a cable to install a custom recovery, which is needed for rooting your device.

Probably since pin that transfer data is broke, but the one that does the charging is still intact/functional. Samething happened to my Captivate that got water damaged.
It's possible the buy the USB board and replace it, its pretty cheap on ebay.

I charge with the Wireless orb.

warranty replacement or take it apart and fix it. the usb port is on a daughterboard that would probably be relatively cheap to replace if you don't trust your soldering.
There may be hope to unlock and root without usb if you're on 4.2.2. Not if you're on 4.3 already though (yet at least).

Possible Busted USB port

My XP micro USB port seems to be busted it won't charge using the plug charger or pop-up on my PC when I just plug it in.
I bought it online from O2s site in January, what are my options to get it fixed/get a new one?
Does rooting it affect my warranty?
Rooting probably avoided your warranty, try to unroot or flash o2's firmware.

Mine only charges with the standard cable in a very specific position. It sucks.

You could backup the phone to an sd card using rerware my backup and then, factory reset the phone, that will remove root and you wouldnt have to worry about them knowing you rooted
Just delete superuser from manage applications, no one will know you rooted. It shouldn't be a problem anyway as the fault is hardware related and not software related

My N7 only charges while off?

Anyone else ever have this issue? Wondering if its a bug in the newer roms or if its just something with my device? Ive requested an RMA with Asus, but I was curious to see if anyone else had this issue. Tablet charges only when off. Ive made certain I am using the correct cord/power supply that camw with it and have also done factory reset. Im running the latest build of Paranoid Android.

I also can not connect it via USB to my computer to be able to return it to stock and lock boot loader. I think I am in for it guys. Anyone help?

It's also written in manual that nexus 7 only charges while being turned off. This means charging from anywhere else than outlet. It's because computer USB port doesn't have enough power to charge the tablet while it's being used.

I'm not trying to charge it though. I just want to return it to stock conditions to RMA to Asus. It doesn't get recognized when I plug it in via USB port. I've tried all manner of USB cables, including the one that came with the device. I feel as though I am royally screwed on this one, unless someone knows of a way to unroot/lock the bootloader without needing to connect my tablet to a USB port?
Well...anyone know how much Asus charges for a rooted/unlocked Nexus 7 to be worked on? :[

[Q] USB Cable damaged

I think my USB cable which came with the stock charger is damaged. On the micro USB end, what's supposes to be in the middle/center is now sticking a little out. (I say again on the micro USB end, the one you stick in your phone. Should I replace the microUSB cable and keep the charger?

Does it work properly?
Yeah, works. I went out and bought a a micro USB cable, but it charges much slower than the stock one. Can one of you take a look on those photos and tell me if the jack is okay?

Does your phone charge? Also when you put your cable in your phone does it seem to stick out or does it look flush.
If it looks flush and if it's charging and there doesn't seem to do any damage to the actual phone I wouldn't worry about it.
My samsung charger, the actual USB cable is bent and it still charges just fine and doesn't affect my actual Micro USB slot for the phone.

It looks OK. I can wiggle it a tiny little to the right and left though. I wasted damn 12 euro on that new cable (I know I overpaid, I just wanted to charge my phone safely, ironically it just charged it slow as hell. The cable looked a bit cheap anyways.. I'll just give it away. )

Can my battery get damaged?

I've jsut found out that my charging cable(factory cable) is screwed.Sometimes it charges, sometimes not.My question is:can it damage the battery,or any hardware parts of the phone causing permanent issues?Of course, now i changed the cable to a good one...
If it sends the wrong voltage then yes but I highly doubt that since the USB Plug controls the voltage with the resistors and such.

No you are completely safe.
Like said above, the usb cable just transfers power. The power source decides how much it charges your phone.
That's why charging your phone with your computer/laptop takes alot longer then using the wall charger.

Yep, it does 500Mah each port but if only one port is in use on a 3 port laptop then it would be 1500Mah.

LONG time to charge

Recently, my phone has been taking a long time to charge. I am using the stock charger, but it is the same with every charger. It takes 10 hours to charge from zero to one hundred percent. I even lose battery sometimes while plugged in. A factory reset DID NOT help, neither did wiping the cache. What can I do? I need this phone.

Check what amperage your phone is being charged at... Google play store has an app called galaxy charging current lite. It'll tell you how much charge is going in.
The max a kitkat charge while screen is on is 1200mAh. While off it can reach 1900mAh. Pre-kitkat can do 1900mAh with screen on but it gets hot.
If your phone is charging only at 1000 or below, you may need to try a diff charger or a diff cable.
You probably have counterfeit charger. It could also be battery problem, I recommend replacing battery or getting new charger. Good luck.

Sounds like a dirty or malfunctioning micro usb issue to me. Try using a tooth pick or a piece of paper to clean out your micro usb slot. Hopefully it's just dirty and not malfunctioning.

I don't recommend this until you've checked with new battrry, charger, and cable. You can risk damaging the sensitive USB port on your phone and if that happens, the cost of repair is significantly higher.
