[Q] Rooting Nook Simple Touch - Nook Touch General

First things first, I have just got hold of a NST from eBay and this is my first e-reader. I wanted to know before I proceed further, is this the forum concerning Simple Touch as well because it only says Nook Touch, so any solutions discussed here will they apply to my Simple Touch?
To my main question: Sorry it this was asked before. After rooting will I be able to zoom pdfs , the files that are image based like magazines for example.
If I want to roll back to original firmware after rooting - is there a possibility?
Will I be able adjust the contrast setting of the display because it looked washed out for me (maybe it is only me having used tablets all these years.)
Please point me to a step by step guide to root and the best custom firmware.
Thanks in advance
S

No one here for simple touch?

Yes, these are the forums for the Nook Simple Touch and Nook Simple Touch with Glow Light. Read the development thread on NookManager and the apps forum on pdf reader applications for more on your questions. The short answers is yes you can do everything you want. The caveat is you will need to read instructions carefully and there are quirks to everything. So read first and see if you're comfortable with the rooting process and the apps you will have available.

Thanks many

[REQ] Over-clocking guide

if someone please can post a noob friendly guide to over-clock the phone, please make it very detailed guide, because it is my first android phone and i'm not used to this environment yet, like where should i write insmod? i use windows 7 btw(if it makes any different)
thank you in advance, i'm sure it will be helpful for allot of people.
Thread moved to General.
There is already a thread about overclocking the DHD which gives instructions and there are videos around as well.
Read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815808 And read up on the G2 guide as well. Please read up about it fully first before diving in, while we all want to have fast devices, why would you like to overclock your phone, and have you fully read up about it before or are you just jumping in for the sake of it?
i did all what have mentioned above, and as i said it's my "firs" android phone, so i dont know "anything" so that why i requested the guide. thank you for passing by
Have a read through that link I posted. In there there is another link that gives instructions for the G2. There is also a video link in there as well that should help.

in that thread there are 2 methods, the Micheal method and that Gscript method, which both i cant do the needed files for, the modules, where to write "insmod"
thats why i needed a noob friendly guide starting from point zero, keep in mind that not just me who needs it
Again agree with hackage this isn't for new users its causes reboots and will burn your battery if not set up right and the tables are incomplete unless your going to write your own scripts etc etc
My problem with people asking for quick guides or n00b guides is that they get the guide, jump in, and inevitably moan when something goes wrong. If people read up about how to do it and don't understand, do some more research on what you don't understand. If people read up absolutely everything about how the process works, like for each kernel, addresses etc, not only will they then know how to do it, but they will also have a far better understanding of how the whole system works, and are better for it. The more you know about your system, the more you can understand and make progress instead of hoping someone will do it for you.
In saying that, we all get stuck sometimes, and we need to ask help, but everything to do with overclocking the Desire HD is on these forums, all you have to do is read.

Comprehensive source of rooting info?

Is there a FAQ somewhere that comprehensively covers most of what's involved as a part of rooting the Nexus 7? Or rooting any Android device that would cover the N7? I do dev, but am new to Android.
I'm not even referring to the actual rooting process. Info for that's all over the net. My questions are more along the lines of things like:
What exactly does it mean when people say that rooting will erase the drive? Somehow, I think that's probably exaggerated. Does it really all but reformat? Does it leave the OS intact, other than unlocking and rooting and just wipe out the apps I've installed and my settings and data? Or whatever happens.
Do I have to literally reinstall all my apps from Play or wherever? Or can I copy to a computer and just copy it back again after rooting?
If the rooting process deletes all my apps, this has no effect on what Play lists as "My Android Apps," does it?
Given these questions, what's the state of the device right after I finish rooting? Is it display sort of what it was out of the box?
If I need warranty service and unroot, would Google know at a glance that it had ever been rooted? What restores it to its original state? Doesn't unrooting just remove root access and lock the device?
I'm not here to ask about this ROM or that, but why use another ROM? Would that completely replace Jelly Bean? If it does, how to I get back to Jelly Bean?
Does the Nexus Root Toolkit work on Windows XP? (I have that and a Mac. I’m running the Win 8 preview in a Virtual Box VM, but getting it to consistently recognize the N7 has been problematic. On the Mac, the Android file manager tends to drift in and out. It's possible that I have issues with my N7 USB port.)
I realize there are all noob questions, but that's where I am. I'm sure I could come up with plenty more and I'm sure plenty of others have and have had similar questions. But most of the answers I'm finding don't address nuances, they're just black and white, sweeping terms that don't really get where I'm looking to go.
I'd appreciate answers to these questions or pointers to good places to find out without having to wade through dozens of topics hoping to find some piece of what I want to know.
I might be able to answer some of your questions, give me a pm and I would love to answer them (it would be hard to put them all in a post)

I posted this a while back. It should be a pretty good hub of information.
Hope that helps! If you have any other questions that this doesn't answer - either ask here or check google. Just make sure you read everything you possibly can - the more knowledge the better.
Lots of stuff there. Thanks. I'll take a good look.

[Q] First time tablet owner

A real noob here. Will be receiving a N7 32gb for Xmas. Is there a decent reference/how to book for a first time tablet owner and specifically an N7 owner? Thanks
Just search here in xda for any questions that you have and ask around. You can also search the internet with any questions you may have. Alot of my questions regarding my N7 i found here.

The Nexus 7 comes with a guidebook. When you first log into your device you will see the guide book. It will give you basic knowledge of the device.
As for other questions just search this forums. Cause I'm sure the question has been asked before. If you don't get a case with it for Christmas. Don't forget to buy a really nice case for it.
Maybe even try to get a screen protector for it if you can.

Welcome!
Welcome and great choice.
For a noob, this thread has tons of videos.
Nexus 7 Reviews and Tips Videos
Don't mean to beat a dead horse but here is my two cents....
It depends what kind of info you are looking for. If you simply are looking for info on how to use a tablet in general the included nexus 7 eBook is your best bet. If your looking for more in depth info, or wish to do more with the device (root, ROM, etc.) Xda is your best friend. The nexus 7 was my first device EVER and with the help of these forums I am now running full linario-andriod and working on developing my own custom Roms. I highly recommend reading around the forums for more info if your interested in learning more about the all the things you can do with this device, but it can be somewhat overwhelming if your not into it. Sorry to over-answer your question just thought I would clarify previous posts.
Hope you enjoy your nexus 7... I know I have

Thank you
Thank you for your response. Your post was for your single post not the entire thread.
Secondly, I have rooted a phone in the past (my S2) so I understand the process and what can happen if not done correctly. My apologies if I have submitted a question that had already been asked. I'm on my phone now and not using a forum app. I have attempted multiple times to search but my browser keeps refreshing sending me in circles. I am new to the S4 and just wanted to know if rooting the phone causes the phone to display the yellow triangle on boot up. Perhaps I should wait until morning when I can view the forum on a computer. Thank you.

The phone app does suck. Rooting your phone, if the correct method for your firmware version is used, should not display a yellow triangle on boot. However, it might display "custom" with a padlock symbol. There is just entirely way too much information about this to post here, but if you want to search for "sysscope" when you get to your PC or do a visual search for threads that ask about "custom" or "official" in the thread title, you should find a lot of information about it. Mostly, check the General and Q & A sections for this information. There is also a lot of information about it in the thread I linked you to.
I know it was a single post I linked you to because it explains the correct way to go about finding information. As the post suggests, you need to learn as much about what you are doing as possible before you do anything to your phone. It does not matter what your previous experience was because this is a different phone and asking the question you asked shows that you need to learn more about it. The correct way to learn this information is by following what I said in the post I linked to you. This information should not be obtained from asking questions...it should be obtained by reading the available information that has already been posted in the forum(s). Good luck.
You are correct about learning as much as you can. That is partially why I asked the question. I have never been the type of individual to do anything (purchase new things, take a trip etc) without learning as much as I can before I take the plunge. Thank you for sending me in the right direction.

As an aside, some individuals (like myself) aren't good with inputting the proper search terms when trying to find information. Instead they come across a lot of misinformation which can be just as bad as not doing the proper research.

Yes but there's an app to remove it called triangle away

Yes, there is. But from my reading the updated version is no longer working with the Canadian S4. As per the reviews in the app store and posts from this forum

Rooting Nook Simple Touch

Please don't cross-post general questions into the development forum.
Very good at least somebody can respond but no answer.
