OK ive been reading up on unlocking the carrier on an i337 and how the service menu has been disabled in the newest MF3 update. But where are those settings stored? In the dialer.apk? and if so now that MF3 has root access could it be something as simple as using Root Explorer to put the MDL Dialer.apk in the MF3 to see if the options are reenabled? Sorry if this question has already been asked. But I searched and couldnt find anything
The service menu is not stored in the dialer APK... That would be a huge security risk.

Yea I know its not in the dialer but it got to be somewhere in the system correct? Just a matter of find the correct file I guess.

You need a PC to format the card, the rest you can do from Terminal Emulator: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577
If you browsed the forums you would know that you cant install a custom recovery on an S4 running MF3 firmware. Meaning no TWRP or CWR. But you can root with the above method.
I did look so your saying no matter what cdm and twrp cannot be on s4. Thats fkd if so

Do yourself a favor and look harder. There is a lot of information available about this and you WILL brick your phone if you don't take the time to read and learn about it. Good luck.
Look man I looked I will look again. But I have only bricked my phone once back when first Google phone came out not a noob. Just didn't want to spend hours looking if it took someone 30 sec to respond. Admin please close my thread due to lack of assistance will look elsewhere thanks

I am sorry if these questions have been asked before but I couldn't find the particular answers that I wanted. Please pardon me if any of these questions are noob questions.
1.) Are there MK2 TAR files that I can download just in case I mess something up and need to flash back using ODIN?
2.) I know that MF3 made it impossible to downgrade back to MDL, but if I have the MF3 TAR files (which I do) can I at least downgrade from
MK2 to MF3?
3 (Optional).) What ROMs work with rooted MK2? Is there some sort of list? Or do the ROMs that worked with MF3 work with MK2?
Thank you for all of your answers. Again I am sorry if some/all of these questions have been asked and/or answered before. I have been searching for the answers on many forums for the past two days and couldn't find someone who asked the same questions. I am also sorry if any of these are noob questions. I just started getting into rooting of the S4 in early November and I know that I still have a lot to learn.
1: yes
2: no
3: there is SS 1.70. It is in beta and is hit and miss. No list of ROMs. You cannot install a custom recovery of custom ROMs.

Thanks for taking the time out and giving straight answers. I have one more question though: Do you by any chance know the download link to the MK2 TAR files?
It is located in the general section. Also, SS has been updated to 1.71. Still in beta.

I am sorry but I can't find the TAR files for it. All I can find is the recovery.img and the thread says no ODIN. I am really sorry for being a noob but I can't seem to find it.
Use this. http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319196595
Place it on The SD card. And go to the stock recovery to flash.

Thanks a lot! Is there a way to flash with ODIN yet though just in case I am stuck in a boot loop and I can't reach the stock recovery because I have been in that position before when I was in MF3 and I had to use ODIN. If there isn't that's fine, I'll just be extra careful. Thank you for all your help and this is my last question.
Not that I know of.

Hi everyone, I have been a fan of the xda website for a long time and you guys have always helped me solve my problems with my phones.
This is the first time I need something that I havenĀ“t been able to find. Forgive me if it is already answered but I cannot find it.
Basically my problem is that I was trying to rom my phone for the first time and it failed.... miserably. I did not brick my phone; it still works, starts up and functions normally except for a few key things: a few programs do not function any more, most notably the wifi, contacts and dialer app, the lock screen widgets and some others.
What I did was installed safestrap, then downloaded the gravitron rom. I put everything in the right place, created the extra rom slot, then is where the noob came in. I forgot to switch over to the rom slot and instead installed over the main rom... Wow much noob, right?
Anyway, what I want to know is if there is any way to salvage my phone? I am on baseband mf3 and with the research I have done, I have concluded I am screwed until odin files for mf3 come out. But if there is any way I can get my phone back to normal I would appreciate it so very much.
Thank you all in advance for your help. I apologize if i have left anything out but I will give any info on request.
No love for the guy with busted wi-fi?
Please help me! I'm killing my data plan... and it's really annoying to not be able to use my dialer or contacts.

Sounds like you're on mf3 firmware? If so, I'd flash that firmware and start over. Google mf3 tar files xda
If on MF3 you will need to flash the modules provided in the development thread. If on MK2, you will need to manually place them because there is no flashable modules yet AFAIK. No need to start from scratch unless you want it back to complete stock.

I am on mf3 baseband, i forgot to add that to the op.
I have tried flashing them with odin already, it instantly fails. Though I did it again just now to be sure with the same results.
Any other suggestions?
You don't flash the modules in Odin... You flash them in the SS recovery.

How would I go about doing that? I have tried copying the jellybean folder from the mf3 tar files on to my phone and going to install in SafeStrap, but I cannot install them as they dont even appear. Should I be going to a different place to install?
The modules are in the SS development thread. It is a zip file.

So now, is there any way I can get my phone back to stock? because my calendar and my dialer and contacts still don't work for me...
I think something happened when i installed the rom over my stock rom. whoops.

Ok that's the one I was trying to do but it fails instantly. I downloaded the mf3 tar files from xda, loaded them up like the thread suggested, put the phone into recovery mode but it instantly fails.
Any thoughts on why?
Drivers, USB port, cable. My money is on drivers though. Check all three.

Is there a way to not get carrier message to update firmware until custom ROMs and safestrap hit our newly rooted phones? An app or erasing a file? I used to remember how to do this for other phones but any help would be appreciated.

Freeze or change SDM.apk to SDM.apk.bak
Wasn't sure if any of you knew about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157
Basically you can now root the S5 and NOT trip knox.
Really it seems to be most phones that are 4.2.2 work.
This doesn't get you a boot loader etc. but gives root at least for those wanting to not risk warranty and get the bloat off.

After the simplest root ever, how does one go about a custom recovery? Do we still have to odin that or is it flashable?

If you do custom recovery you will trip knox making this method for you to root having been useless and you should have used one of the other options that does it all at once hah.
Can you use this root method and get the hotspot mod working without a custom recovery?

You can but you need to be aware that you can get stuck in a boot loop. But if you are willing to take the risk.
Download the Odex version that matches your system, this is critical. Extract the services.jar and services.odex files. Use a root explorer to copy them to /system/framework. Change permissions to rw-r-r. Reboot and it will either work or not.
