[Warranty] Should I upgrade to 4.3? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so I just got my (i9500) device and binary status back to official after rooting my phone, dual booting, using various modules etc. in expectations that 4.3 is going to be released officially in the next 3-4 days.
Now, it seems like 4.3 firmwares come with a Knox-like feature called Warranty Bit.
My question is :
Is it worth upgrading to 4.3 at the risk of losing your Warranty forever (because face it, I am going to root it and flash things)?
I couldn't care less abt the new features, I'll be switching over to an AOSP ROM when a stable one comes out.
At 4.2.2, there's an almost complete possibility for me to revert to Official status IF anything goes wrong, but at 4.3 there's no chance at all.
thanks!

Bump.
Anyone?

For being honest with you and make it clear you dont have warrantly avoid if you do the update in 4.3 official (rom stock si).
If juste BEFORE you have erased your foot of course ans also custom recovery etc.
But if you try to root jour s4 AFTER doing the update THERE you woxnt have warrantly anymore !.
For make simple there you dont risks the risks is the following One if you do that and dont want to lose forever you warrantly you will be obliger to not FLASHING LR lther anymlre.
Personnaly i suggest you to pût a custom rom bases on the stock ondes...as Echoes the best i know.
I am on Android 4.3 actually with the MJ5 MoDem it s perfect ! Much berger chan the official ans i have not lose m'y Warta t'y..because the KNOW had ben removed in the rom...
Si in wlrse case i will juste have to Côme back to official statut.

Clipboard crashes 4.3?
I thought of updating to 4.3 myself but I noticed there were some concerns in Clipboard apps in Google Play about a bug in the 4.3 clipboad causing crashes.

From what I've heard I would actually wait till the next version comes out lol, I've heard things like battery temperature raises, camera faults etc... I' dont have a S4 yet but I've been doing a bit of research on them since I'm likely to buy one hopefully its not on the 4.3 version xD . But that's my opinion anyway

Even Iam thinking not moving from 4.2.2 on my s4.

If you have flashed custom firmware on your Samsung and installed the new KNOX bootloader, your warranty will be completely void.

[Q] To update or not to update...

Hi All
Having had every previous version of the Galaxy S, I've finally gotten around to getting the S4.
I've been reading up on all of the extra security issues this device now has (a la Sony) and am disappointed that I can't be as flash happy as I like to be for fear of voiding the warranty.
Anyway, I'm on Vodafone UK and am running an old firmware, XXUAMDD. Kies is offering me an update to MGG, but I know this will lock the bootloader.
So I'm wondering if there is any point in upgrading now? Ideally I'd like to have 4.3 running, rooted and warranty still valid, but I think at the moment this may be asking too much.
Any views welcome please!
Cheers
Well my advice is simple , if it s not broken do not update. there are no differences between those 2 versions apart from having a locked bootloader and the pain in the ass knox.
The mgg firmware will also give you the ability to move apps to sdcard but foldermount is a better alternative that will work fine with your version.
Are you sure MGG has new bootloader? I don't think it does.....
Sent from my GT-I9505
yes mgg was the first one with the new bootloader . you can always refer to the knox questions and answers thread for various information about knox .

[Q] Flash a 4,3 TW Rom with STOCK Recovey and Pre-KNOX bootloader?

I THOUGHT what I wanted was simple enough but apparently with Samsung nothing is ever simple.
I have the i9505 S4 and am currently on the Pre-Rooted I9505XXUBMGA rom. That means 4.2.2, Stock Recovery and PRE-KNOX bootloader.
My custom flash counter is also 0 as I've only ever flashed the pre-rooted stock kind of roms. No triangle has ever appeared on my screen.
What I want to do is install a 4.3 TW rom WITHOUT flashing a custom recovery (so probably through Odin) and WITHOUT having to flash the KNOX-enabled bootloader.
The reasons should be obvious enough, I want this phone kept as close to stock as possible with what I do being completely reversible without having to rely on Triangle Away as with every new firmware Samsung appears to be even more hell-bent on breaking it.
Obviously I'd want said rom to actually function correctly as I've read things like sound and/or wifi breaking or mobile data dropping with/without the phone being on sleep etc...
So, any takers?

Hi,
From where I am,I can see 3 options.
1.Stay where you are on 4.2.2
You just need to flash stock firmware ,and you are back to out-of-the-box state.
But....you want 4.3.... so,
2.Flash a custom recovery, and you have the choice of every custom ROM in the DEV section.4.22,4.3 ,TW,AOSP , you get my drift. As long at it does not contain the new knox bootloader, you can get back to out-of-the-box state in 2 easy steps:
Triangle Away.
Flash stock firmware.
3.Try to flash the new knox-pox 4.3 ROM and be stuck there.(because there is no coming back)
Look HERE
The [OP] explains it well.
And this is probably the ROM you would choose.(close to stock)
It seems the samsung is determined to mess things up for the user who wants to easily mod their own phones.
It has gotten so bad, that the [OP] has even jumped ship to the Z1.
He says he will maintain that ROM,but for how long, because they have already moved the goalposts twice...
I am on 2.
And I intend to stay there, because I like to be in charge of what goes on my phone.
Devs will almost certainly maintain their ROMS,and updates like 4.4 will come along in time.
Only you can make the choice.
Hopefully,I have given you some options.
Yeah, that's the thread I flashed my current 4.2.2 rom from. I saw him throw the towel and decided this just wasn't gonna work.
I guess I need to take the plunge and install Philz recovery.
Somewhat subjective I know but, which 4.3 TW custom ROM seems to work best when the OLD Pre-KNOX bootloader is being kept and with which modem? (I've seem answers vary wildly on this one).

Hi,
The reason you have seen such wild variations on this,is because it is so subjective.
This is where the fun begins.
Trying out different ROMS,and seeing which is best suited to you,and your requirements.
Best advice...read the first post of a ROM,and see if it has what you want from a ROM...especially the bit about new knox bootloader removed.
And remember to make a nandroid!
As for modem,if you are having no issues or signal problems at the moment, stick with the one you are on.

Downgrading my samsung galaxy s4(I9500) to 4.2.2

Hey guys i have a samsung galaxy s4 on android 4.4.2 kitkat and i am not happy at all with the kitkat update since it has ruined battery life and is causing many other problems like lag and overheating
So i want to downgrade to the stock 4.2.2. I have never rooted my samsung galaxy s4 and i am still unrooted.
I know knox will be set to 0x1 after downgrading but i do not care about it as triangle away supports galaxy s4 now .
So here is what i want to know
If i download the proper 4.2.2 firmware from sammobile according to my country(India) and install it via odin then will the process work? and if it is the right procedure does it require root ?
Is there any chance that my phone can get bricked because of knox ?
and how should i take backup of efs in case of a possible imei error ?
I know how to downgrade i9505 but i9500 Im not sure about it I never tested it out
I think you can downgrade successfully, I have a thread about how to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3 but its for i9505 check my profile threads
You can downgrade successfully if you follow my guide, but you will lose wifi of maybe imei
So you can solve 4.3 wifi problem by downloading 4.3 kernel
You can use the same way to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.2.2
And for how to backup your imei you will need a rooted device !!
There some apps that backsup imei
Just look for your phone model "gt-i9500"
And you can backup you system starting from imei by having custom recovery like CWM and do Nandroid
And Knox will be tripped
Downgrade or Install Custom ROM

Hey dude,
I don't really understand how the s4 lags - did u try resetting the device?
the battery life is fine with the latest update.
Overheating is still there in i9500 & also it cools down rapidly - I guess its a HW design. Hope it wont be fixed.
I was annoyed with the overheating issue & now i am used to it. It heats while using 2G or 3G Internet & playing games.
Using regular apps it doesn't heats up & now i am okay with it.
Regarding the downgrade, frimware from sammobile will work fine. You will have to install via odin.
no your phone wont get bricked cos of knox - I suggest you to follow a video tutorial and do the downgrade.
But I recommend you to try a custom rom such as Omega, Hassan etc
In my experience the these roms are very good on battery and performance. Pls do note these roms (Omega, Hassan) are based on samsung stock rom.
If you still want to downgrade, I would suggest you to take it to the service center guys & they will do it for free.
Hope this helps!! :good:
Yeah it mostly gets heated while playing games and using chrome
Though i can still live with the heat because eventually i will get used to it after some time
But the lag is killing me
My phone shows lags while entering and leaving apps and camera and gallery too and it was not lagging before on 4.2.2
Also i have experienced significant battery drag
While using the internet it falls of by 1 percent every two minutes
Is this kind of battery drop normal ?
I am really missing the old firmware so i think i am gonna go to samsung and get it downgraded from there
Thanx for the sugesstion bro

I think will be not easy. You voided ur warranty when u downgraded (KNOX:0x1). No service centers will fix it (in theory) :highfive:
No Performance Lag & Good Battery Life

Hey bro,
In my experience with the S4 on Stock ROM I never experienced a lag.
Please check on the settings - switch off the gimmicky features such as Air View, Air Gesture, S Beam, Air Gesture, Motion, Palm Motion etc etc.
Settings --> Connections Tab --> NFC, S Beam, Nearby devices, Screen Mirroring
Settings --> My Device -->(scroll down) motions & gestures, smart screen, air view
Turn locations off
Check the battery graph - see which app consumes more
I had this issues when these features were on.
The phone will be always hot, battery was draining like 1 % for 1 to 2 mins.
There is no lag with camera and gallery.
Battery drag is bit similar that I lose 1% for every 3 to 4 mins on 2/3G Internet. But on Wifi battery is solid.
In my opinion battery is very solid in S4.
The latest firmware is very stable. The performance has increased from old firmwares.
If you hv rooted the device, and got custom recovery just try a custom rom.
Okay i think it would be good to try the custom rom
So i am gonna try that and see what happens

As I know, if you download an official firmware of samsung from sammobile, you can downgrade/upgrade your firmware without rooting, just flash via odin. Maybe you can uninstall KNOX first before downgrading, open KNOX mode and press menu and click uninstall KNOX. I hope this helps. Good Luck

[Q] Should I update from 4.3 JB to 4.4.2 KK ?

Hello
I recently got my S4 i9505. I'm planning to root it
I have Android version 4.3
I used to flash costum roms on my s2 but I'm not really planning to do much flashing on my S4. not soon anyway
So as I connected the phone to Kies to make sure the drivers were downloaded so I can proceed with rooting
Firmware update popped up
I'm not sure what the best option for me now.
Should I root now and then I'd be able to flash a costume KK rom? and are there any stable ones that are better than the stock?
Can I use kies to update my rooted phone?
Maybe I should stick with JB 4.3? Which one is better 4.3 or 4.4.2?
I remember facing some issues when I update my s2 back. So I searched for the KK Update for the s4 and some people weren't so happy with their KK update
I know that doesn't represent the majority but still it could happen to me
So I confused myself
What is your advice to me?
sorry for the long post
Also I have an extra question What is KNOX? and do I need it?

First, the most problems in 4.4.2 are fixed, so if you flash the officical, latest firmware of your country you shouldn't have any problem.
An important thing: if you flash a custom rom, your warranty will be set 0x1, that means, you lost your garanty if you flash a custom rom, that's the so called KNOX. You can use knox like a second system on your phone, with all secure data in it, you can only access with a passwort and all datas are locked without this passwort.
Root your phone after the software update if you want to root it.

Upgrading from Custom to Stock

Hello everyone.
I've just installed Sweet ROM V4 MJ7 and I wanna update to Stock 4.4
So its rooted and CWM is installed.
Here's my question...
Should I just put 4.4 stock to Odin and install or should I do sth else?
I know, this question could be so frustrating for someone but it's my first NOTE and i dont wanna mess it.
Also, is it worth to update from 4.3 to 4.4.2 (N9005XXUGNG1)
Im afraid of this knox 2.0
Thanks for help.
Yes..it is the way it should be using odin to install stock firmware. This is gonna be fine bcoz u are going to 4.4.2 unless you are downgrading which is too dangerous.
Just tell me my friend now if it is worth to upgrade to 4.4.2?
For my personal prefence, I like to be up to date all the time. So I would stay with latest update. But some people prefer to stay with 4.3 bcoz of better battery life or other wifi issues. But all bugs have been fixed in these days. So I guess the main reason to stay with 4.3 is just bcoz of battery life. I cant tell exactly how much difference of battery since I just upgraded to 4.4.2 as soon as I got this. So I cant notice 4.3 that much in less than a day. ?? go for it. What is bothering you! You are holding Note 3 and life isnt worth if u don't stay up to date.
