I'm in mexico for a wedding and I noticed my clock won't change to the correct time. I came from Eastern time and Mexico City is the equivalent to Central time in the US. I have the default settings checked where I get the time zone from the network and automatically adjust time. Using any weather app shows correct location, but the clock won't change. An easy temporary fix would be to manually set the time, but I didn't have this issue 2 years ago when I was rockin' a Thunderbolt.

Check if your time setting is set to auto network and not a specific time zone. If it is set to auto, then your guuess is as good as mine.
If you are in airplane mode the cellular radio is not on so it can't update the time from the cell tower. The other issue could be proximity to the edge of the time zone and you are getting a tower from eastern still. This is a problem is border areas where you can get a cell tower from the other country or time zone.

Hello,
here is my problem.
Living in a region near the border, I have important roaming fee simply because my phone loses from time to time the national network and connects to a foreign network that does not let go even when the national network is available again.
One solution is of course to set manually the network but it is not convenient when you cross the border several times a day.
Another solution would be to have a small app that checks every 15 or 30 minutes if the national network is available to automatically reconnect to it.
I’m certain any of the fabulous xda developers is able to develop such a program in few clicks …
Thank you for your help

So far I'm really happy with my G2!
I'm in Milwaukee where we have H+ coverage. I'm getting around 12hrs from the battery with moderate use. I don't think this is terrible, but the "cell standby" uses 40-60% of the battery!
I did some research and found the "WCDMA Only" setting. That brought the "time without signal" down to around 30% from around 60% but I don't like the idea that if I leave WCDMA coverage I'll miss calls etc...
So, my questions is - Is it possible that this is an issue with the radio firmware? It seems to be unnecessarily switching from EDGE to 3G/H+ since if I force WCDMA only, it maintains connection.
Any ideas?
I suggest you change your setting to WCDMA Preferred.
That, obviously, will cause the phone to connect to the faster network if it's available, and if it's not, will connect to the slower EDGE networks.
Having -50dB HSPA at school, and marginal HSPA at home, this works great for me.
Sometimes there will be a handover to 2G even if a 3G signal is reachable. Possible causes are sudden increases in utilization of the 3G by other users or attenuation for other reasons. Setting WCDMA-only prevents the radio from performing battery-draining tower searches, but like you said there is the problem of occasionally not having any coverage at all.
This is a problem with T-Mo US's network. You can see symptoms of it on other devices (particularly so with the Nexus One).
How do I find this setting and set it?

Open dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#*. It's in the first list item.
Edit: I see your location is Bay Area. I find that T-Mo 3.xG coverage is pretty lacking out on the edges of suburbia (think the hilly areas east of 680).
I have high Cell Standby as well. I checked it's details out and it claims that 50% of the time, my phone is without signal. Check this by going to:
Settings > About Phone > Battery Use > Cell Standby
It will tell me that 50% of the time, I do not have cell signal. I compared this to my brother's Vibrant and his is at 0% signal loss. Definitely something wrong here because my cell standby usage is twice as much as my brother's (we live in the same household so location shouldn't matter).

And how do you un-do this if it does not work out?
NM! I figured it out~!
Edit: figured out how to change this setting. But when I set it to WCDMA at my office I get 1 to no bars And the internet is slow. I do have a H and it is using HSPA.
If I set it to GSM only I get 3 to 4 bars, mostly 4 bars max. And then I am on Edge, and the internet is a bit faster.
I am just wondering why the coverage sucks so bad for 3g? When the maps I can find seem to show good coverage. When I am out and about I get good bars on HSPA, but inside it just sucks.
I am in Houston, area code 77009 :/

Thanks for this info
Weird, I just checked my G2 and I have 0% time w/o signal.
I live in Houston, TX and this is a combo of downtown and my house.
Botched setting in the phone?
i got 14+ hours the other day, but did notice that my cell standby has been very high.. when i checked... 44% of the time is without a signal (not sure how that's calculated) as I rarely ever see signal loss.. except for an hour out of the day I go into airplane mode at the gym because i have 0 cell coverage there. But I just changed to GSM Auto (PRL), i'll see if anything changes tommorow.

Why do you think this is a botched setting? This is exactly what it should be like. You don't want any signal loss.

Very interesting trick. Changed my settings from GSM only to WCDMA only. My "time without signal" dropped from 50% to around 35% so it helped a bit, but not completely. On top of that, I noticed that my signal was a lot weaker and would drop more frequently so I had to switch back to GSM only.

I meant on the OP's part.
I don't think it's a botched setting.
I just wonder if they have the phone is jumping between bands too frequently and unnecessarily. In my house the phone constantly jumps around from H-G-E suggesting that it's dropping signal and switching bands. However if I force it to WCDMA it never loses signal.

Hi All,
first off, thank you all for this amazing collection of information on this device and the rest of the android world. I have been a reader since I got my first MT3G in April of '10.
quick question. I noticed that every so often my phone (MT4G) loses its service connection. (little x over the bars in the notification panel) when this happens, I cannot call, text or access the internet. it usually cycles back on after a couple minutes. the fact that it comes back and it has happened both at work and at home makes me think its my phone's radio and not a tower issue.
stock rom
I do have the network mode set to WCDMA only.
anyone else have this issue? any thoughts or suggestions?
I've only seen this in an area that had no t mobile coverage. I assume this meant it was on an at&t tower for emergency calls only.
Could also be a sim issue but I'm not suggesting anything specific.
Does this happen with umts enabled?

hhmm.. the sim is pretty new, i think i converted from my old voicestream card to a new tmo card when i got the mt3g last year...
honestly, i don't think i had this issue when it was set to gsm/wcdma auto.
I guess i'll try turning the network setting back to that and see if the problem persists.
Thanks!

When you have it set "wcdma only" its only going to connect to 3g/4g. T- mobile's 3g is very spotty so it going to drop signal every now and then. If you switch it to "gsm or wcdma" it will pick up "edge" also so you won't lose signal. If I'm wrong, someone correct me.

I didn't know how to title this so here is my question and scenario.
The nexus 4 I have is great except for the erratic signal issues. Used to have the T-Mobile S3 and sinal was way better than this phone, but I digest. My phone company Solavei (Runs on T-Mobile) allows me to Roam on AT&T for free whenever I'm out of range with T-Mobile. The first time i checked this out, I went to the middle of nowhere and my phone automatically went over to AT&T, had Full bars, Edge network speed. everything was great. However I find myself in school without signal 98% of the time and odd enough, my phone is able to see AT&T but it just doesnt connect to it.
Is there an app that I can force my phone to roam If not, is there a setting that I can indicate when the phone should roam?
Basically what I want to do is edit roaming values so whenever my phone doesn't find signal from T-Mobile towers, it searches for 15 seconds and if it doesn't find anything, It is forced to Roam. Is there anything like that if possible?
Sorry for the long story and thanks for the patience lol.

Do you have the Data Roaming checked in the mobile network setting?
Yeah that's checked. Both for data and voice

I'm using a provider which offers national roaming. This means if my network provider (let's name it A) doesn't have a (good) signal, phone switches to another network provider B (for which they have a contract). While on network B, I can call, SMS without limitation, but I'm limited to EDGE while using the mobile network.
It works ok, but there are some cases when I wish to change network faster.
For example - I came to the shopping center and in one part of it, the phone loses signal with my network provider A. It switches to provider B and then often stays with provider B (on roaming) too long. Even if I came out of center where my provider A has 4G, phone still uses provider B ... often quite a long time.
I can go to Settings, but it is quite deep and you can't create a shortcut to there. And it also takes quite a long because of the phone checks for all networks in surroundings.
What I want is just a simple jump to my provider A as quick as possible.
Any idea? I saw some apps on Google's Play which refresh network. Maybe this will be a solution.
Probably there is a setting for refreshing somewhere on Android system?
Turn on airplane mode until the data indicator goes away and then turn it back off
Interesting I have the same problem. I always change manually which is very annoying

Thanks.
I'm sure that I have tried this in the beginning. And it didn't work (maybe I change the state too fast and phone didn't disconnect the first network).
I will try this again when the described problem occurs again.
I have tried with airplane mode today (for about 10 seconds), but if reconnect again to roaming provider. After a minutes or two, it automatically reconnects to my main provider.
I didn't look at the phone all the time, because I was driving ... so I will try with this again.
I have tried again (different location and time) and it doesn't work. It simply reconnects to roaming. If I stay there for an hour or more, then it will reconnect to the main provider. Quite annoying.
