S-Pen Screen Write Option is Not Working!?!? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried everything I know. I pull the S-Pen out and the Menu pops up. I hover over the Screen Write option and click the button on the S-Pen and the menu leaves but the phone does not perform the screen shot. I have also held the tip of the pen while holding the button the S Pen on the screen for 3 secs and nothing. I can screen shot by sliding my hand across the screen. All the other S-Pen options work. So, I think I have narrowed the problem to the phone not doing the screen shot after the Screen Write option is selected. My S Pen options are:
Pen detachment options: Air Command
Direct pen input ON
Pointer ON
Any help would be great, thanks!

hold the pen button lower the pen to touch the screen release the button..

Probably not related but, have you installed the Samsung keyboard update? My handwriting recognition wasn't working until I installed it.

None of those worked .. thanks for the advice..

Pressing Buttons accidentaly while taking Notes

I had a demo of the Note a few days back, and i was simply unable to take notes/use S-Memo without accidentally touching the below capacitive buttons. Hence, every few words i write i hit the buttons!
I experimented for 10minutes but was not able to get hang of it.... Any way to disable capacitive buttons while taking notes OR does this even happen to you guys ?
Lemme know your views....
PS: I also found lags while writing
For the buttons I write in landscape mode.
The lag is obviously software fixable in future updates, since when you use the S mémo (hold Spen button and double tap on screen) ,which is basically a lighter coded Spen app, the writing is lagfree and seamless...
I find it very annoying as well. If you could rotate the screen 180 degrees it would solve the problem, I think.
I found an app "Orientation Control" by "Coin Soft" which offers multiple orientations rather than auto rotate.
Using the "reverse portrait" option solves the capacitive button option but the writing appears slightly offset (down) from where it should.
Frustrating!

Yup, sure.
I found that after upgrading firmware via kies to 2.3.6 the s-memo no longer goes 'back' while writing on the pad. I deliberately tried to press back button when writing on the memo to test it. Only when you stop writing and lift pen or finger away from the screen, the back button can be pressed.
A particular app dev who has created an app for replacing the s-memo didn't agree with me on this. So I think other guys may not agree as well. I don't know, is the version different in different countries? I'm in India.

Spen not working correctly? Screen sensivity at fault?

hello there mates!
Just got my tablet and I'd like to ask you guys something )
Is it normal that you have to press really hard onto the tablet?
the tablet wouldn't even recognize an input when i drop the pen from about 1cm onto the tab.
Is that normal? I doubt it. I activated the dot when hovering on the screen and that works great...am I missing some essential settings?
In addition...why is there no possibility to write with handwriting-to-text when creating a post on xda(writing anything)? Isn't the pen exactly made for this?
Sincerely yours

Try removing the the pen nib and putting it back in. Or use one of the spare nibs. if it doesn't get better you may need to replace the stylus entirely . try some test apps like Markers and see what happens. I found the S pen requires more pressure in system use ( i.e. clicking on the home icon) than in app use.
Finally If you can visit a store which demos the Galaxy Note phone try that stylus on your tablet and see what happens.
Look in the 'tips and tricks' thread, there is a great video from hasc on writing to text which works for all input.
Yeah the default Samsung keyboard has handwriting recog built in. On mine its a button on the bottom left that looks like T/ except the slash is a pencil

Also, the screen sensitivity probably has nothing to do with it since the spen relies on a separate principle alltogether to register the touch. It seems as though the nib presses back on a button that registers how far you press it, so if the button is a little stiff on y8urs (it is on mine) well then get used to it.. its not that bad.

Turn off s-pen hover function

Is there any way to disable the s-pen hover function on the galaxy note? In many apps I get s-pen clicks all over the place, completely unintentionally, because the screen detects the pen hovering close to the screen and reads it as clicks. This is really annoying and I need to turn it off. Most of the time I only want the screen to register my actual clicks with the pen, not the hovering.

There is an option under Settings> Pen Settings> Hovering pen icon..try disabling it & see if it helps..
Did try that, it only turns on and off the icon or dot showing where the pen is hovering. It does not change the behaviour of registering clicks when just hovering or even just having the s-pen close to the screen. When I got my Note it already had android 4.0.4, but from what I read, the Note did'nt even have the hover functionality before it got ICS. In my opinion the whole hover-thing is flawed, on my Note anyway. Sometimes it responds to hovering with clicking everything, and sometimes it don't.
Your pen is slightly bugged out. Try shaking it a little or gently tapping the front end of the pen (where the tip is) against your hand.
The pen point still has a contact made inside the pen and causes phantom presses.
The pressure sensor may be stuck. Does it draw a line in S Memo when hovering? The line is supposed to get thicker when you press harder and no line at all when not pressing. When the Note first came out, a lot of people had the problem. There were fixes.

I wish S-Note had Locked Zoom.

they are times when I don't want note to zoom in because my palm registered before my s-pen did. It's only and I can't believe this wasn't a default option on ALL S-PEN. The s-pen gives unparalled accuracy so I like to use it non-zoom and write small.
There's an option to enable 'palm check.' At least on my Note 2, which I assume is similar. Waiting on my N8000.

Yeah, I agree. I think I will just buy a glove though that covers my palm. I still want the ability to zoom, but I Just don't want it happening when I'm trying to lay down lines for art.

I'm not quite sure what you're meaning by palm check, there is a function for "SPen only" but that one only disables the one finger touch that is for drawing etc. Disable the multitouch for zooming and pan however, isn't possible in SNote at this point.

Anyone having problem with SNote, please contact Samsung and tell them about it and demand a solution. Hopefully with enough people complaining, Samsung will realize that the new SNote isn't any good and change it. Preferably allow us to downgrade SNote to the precious, working version.

I agree. Samsung keep developing the device and they have not look into their most important application. Are they even serious with their consumer? Sigh..
agree! I found it really annoying everytime I use it to take notes. There should be a lock zoom mode in the s note setting.
I agree that S-note could have a few features like locked zoom and hide toolbar... those would be great. I like the new snote though. I dont think you guys should call Samsung to complain, just suggest. Maybe someone on xda can release a downgrade apk?

Or just a two finger zoom that actually worked and not recognized the hand, just like the old version. Just of curiosity, what do you like better with the new one? Do you maybe have a different version of the new SNote that actually works?
That's what I'm hoping as well but there are a couple of different threads around an so far nothing has really come out of them.

I have the snote that came with jb 4.1.2 US n8013. The UI feels alot faster, the spen button to switch to eraser is an awesome feature. It also switches from formula match to eraser and then Back to formula match which is very good since id always make the mistake of going to pen and losing my formula. I cant think of anythinf else atm but i can tell you that apart from the zoom, i havent had major issues with it.

Well that explains it, I run the 4.1.1 version of Android and that comes with a different version of SNote than yours and the 4.1.1 version just doesn't work properly. I really hope that we get the 4.1.2 version of SNote as well since it seems to work much better than our.

Simple trick to Lock the zoom
Hi,
When I'm writing using S Note, I lock the zoom by using my other hand's 3 fingers to touch the screen.
when you write the usual way, you will notice that it will not have any annoying zoom anymore.
hope it works for everyone too.

So if you're right handed. You use your left hand's 3 fingers and hold the screen while write with your right hand? That sounds like a pain. When I take notes I just make sure the spen is sensed before I put my palm down and no zoom. Takes some getting use to or make it a habit.

I discover how to dont zoom with hand on display
When you want to write with hand on display, you must first do this: put your thumb to the corner and THEN you must start write and put your palm on display in one time! since that your moves of hand display doesnt recognize and doesnt zoom, you can go to another list but you must have your thumb on display all the time or do it again (put hand and write in one time). Its not 100% but usually works and have thumb in corner isnt so annoying. . .
It requires root, but I added 'Disable finger input' action to my spen control app. It disables all finger touch (and capacitive buttons on Note 1 and 2) until you execute this action again or turn screen off. I implemented this after I got tired of accidental zooming on Note 10 and hitting capacitive back or menu on Note 1. My drawing experience is completely different now. Needless to say, S Pen is fully working in this mode and it disable finger input in all apps, not just S Note.
Do you think its worth making a separate application just for this? It would still require root .

That would be a blessing. I purchased your Gesture Control app and is really helpfull to hide the Nav bar and prevent the annoying Notification bar from showing every time I'm writting within SNote. Maybe you could make a setting within your app to block any hand touch within the S Note app. The only issue I have is that I have to add S Note to blacklist to prevent gesture control from executing accidentaly within S Note. I haven't got the Spen app yet. Do you think the S Pen gesture app would add a convenient way to go back to home screen without having to turn the screen on and off, in order get the Nav bar back?
I really recommend Gesture Control and S Pen Control. Those are one the top 5 five apps we must have for our Galaxy Note 10.1
Samsung screwed up big time with S Note hand detection.

I have the US version of the N8013 too. I had mine just rooted before the update, i did the 4.1.2 update and haven't found a way to configure the S Pen button to work as an eraser within the S Note app. I even spent $40 to buy the S Pen with eraser so I wouldn't have to click back and forth between eraser and writting mode from the top bar. Pardon me if I've being a Dumb Ass!!! If a press twice the button it goes into brush mode, if press it once thereafter, it goes to marker mode, and after that if I press the button once, it switches back and forth between brush and Marker mode, but never goes back to regular pencil mode unless I reach the top bar and change it back that way. I checked for pen settings under S Note settings and general settings, and I just can't find anything to configure the S Pen button to perform a particular action.
I didn't do a factory reset after the update. Do you think this could be the reason, and maybe I'm just having bugs due to it?
Maybe I have do a complete factory restore, any suggestion on Stock base rom with full S Note functionality?

You can download spen control (trial) from thread in my signature and it has 'disable finger input' action. I don't want to expand on other features as this is not the right thread, but spen app allows you to execute all actions similar way to gesture control, just gestures are executed with spen. I'm just wondering if it is worth making root app that just does this one action - disable/enable finger input.

I'm having the same issue (same version tablet) too.... quite annoying that you cannot find configuration for the S pen in it's most used app. It would be great if I could create a toggle between eraser and pencil/pen mode but nothing seems to do that.

S-Pen screenshot got more annoying

So I realized with the Note4 taking a screenshot with the Note 4 got a little more annoying.
On the Note3, I can pull out the S-Pen, hold the S-Pen button and press and hold on the screen to screenshot.
This no longer works on the Note4. You need go select from the s-pen functions and it will take the screenshot and make go through a few steps before saving.
I just tried it on my note 3 and it did a screen write, where it took a screen shot and went into a screen edit mode where I can write on the image. So its the same as pressing the button on the stylus and selecting "Screen write". Which is the same on both note 3 and note 4. The only thing that they seem to have taken out is being able to do a screen write by the method you mentioned. Which was redundant anyway. Also that function is now for multi-select like a mouse function. So if you hold the button in email, or gallery, then you can drag the stylus up or diagonally across the screen to select mulitple email or images at one time.

I like it. Works great
NOTE 4
I understand you wanting to use the spen function but why not just swipe your hand across the screen to take a screenshot, a lot faster imo; just my 2¢...
Or disable option for editing when you take screen shot
My fingers are crossed that gmd or some of the other devs that had previously made tools relative to the spen will get cracking on the newest code. That way we can customize it to whatever we like best. I was thinking the same thing with the screenshot stuff.
Home+power does the trick, no pen required.
