[Q] Nook ST Glowlight Root Not Working at All - Nook Touch General

I was given the impression by many sites posting a Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight as rooted and a working Google Play.
I got the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706 and followed the links to those files. I'm on Linux, so dd is no problem.
The rooting process was not difficult, but almost nothing works.
-Both browsers launch, but do not do anything despite trying a search phrase or URL.
-Google play does not launch. No feedback. Just nothing.
-Nook ColorTools doesn't launch.
-Amazon Marketplace works, but, since the device is locked to B&N, I can't install Overdrive.
-The "settings" button points to the B&N Nook settings.
-If I'm not careful, I end up at the B&N home screen and cannot get back to the Android desktop. For example, trying to launch Android's settings puts me in the B&N settings and I cannot return to the Android environment.
My original goal was to use the device to read books from my library system using Overdrive app. It's a new-ish device as of 2013-October. Maybe it's not well suited, or something has changed?
Not sure where to start for useful information to track down the issues. Is there a way to turn on logging so there's some information to post?
Thanks for your patience.

There are lots of images and lots of tools floating around and coincidentally, lots of strangeness.
In response to "fails, no feedback, just nothing", I'm sure that logcat is telling exactly what the problem is.
You need to acquaint yourself with logcat and post selected bits of it here.
On any system there is just one Settings.apk and SettingsProvider.apk.
Whichever you have (B&N custom or Android stock) will determine what you see.
I use library books all the time without hacking the DRM.
I don't use the OverDrive app on the Nook because it ties you to the OverDrive reader (which is a piece of junk).
I use Adobe Digital Editions on my desktop and the stock B&N reader.
(There is no evil tie to B&N that prevents you from installing OverDrive or anything else.)
Getting back to a launcher requires a hacked android.policy.jar
It also requires that you selected the launcher as your default Home intent completer.
ButtonSavior can be used if you don't have a hacked jar.

What I would have added to that guide you linked to as requirement would be to make sure you have a backup first before rooting/installing gapps.
Things certainly don't sound like everything is installed and happy.
Being a newish device you will on firmware 1.2 perhaps even 1.2.1 a lot of older threads / tools / tweaks can be for v1.0 or v1.1. If you are on 1.2 then update to 1.2.1 before rooting. There are also minor differences between having a US and UK version firmware.
Get Google apps on NST NSTG sometimes can take a day or so. Signing into youtube sometimes helps. Searching for apps may require the search market app.
If you have a backup restore and try Nookmanager its a bit more user friendly.
---------- Post added at 11:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:27 PM ----------
Try to avoid using class 10 sdcard for your rooting I have read there are problems without kernel fixes [Although that's pure theory on my part I've used them in the past. Then again I did not think to check log for problems like that then)
I really don't want to compile one myself presently as I have no environment setup and those that I've seen like latuk's here don't have support for glowlights.

The device was running 1.2.1 What ended up working was NookManager with NTGAppsAttack.
Renate, my nook default glowlight had no method to browse the Internet with the stock firmware, and my local library system has an app that installed easily once I could use a browser. It looks like the library system's app does all the DRM then downloads. The device still has the B&N apps, so I'll try to read the books from the library in it.
Thanks to all.

If it did, it wasn't obvious. It booted to a B&N URL where I could do B&N book consuming, but that's it. No browser settings under the "settings" menu, no Android-style menu to list/execute installed apps on the device.
It's entirely possible I missed it. I was busier trying to root the thing.:victory:

[Q] Nook STG NookManager Overdrive apk

I successfully rooted my new Nook STG with NookManager. Thanks for developing such an easy root.
I was able to load apps from Amazon App Store. I was also able to install apks using my dropbox app on the nook as well as using Android Commander on my PC.
But my main purpose for rooting was to install the Overdrive app so that I can load books directly from our public/work libraries on the nook and read. I tried installing the apk from overdrive site but it doesnt work.
Does anyone have an APK that works with 1.2 and NookManager root? I also tried a version that said (2.4.2.2) of the apk that I found on another site but it doesnt work.
Also the aldiko apk (2.1.0) installed fine but crashes with the SD card in the nook. It opens fine when the SD card is not loaded in the nook. So am unable to load books as I cannot access the acsm file that I download from the library to load the ADE books.
Thanks.
That's the same reason I rooted. Its really silly that you can easily check out books on your smartphone and not your e-reader. Once you get it going on the Nook its great. I looked a little for an Overdrive that works but ended up with Aldiko version 2 instead. To get Aldiko working with an library once you've installed it:
Open Aldiko
Open the menu | Settings | Adobe DRM and enter your Adobe Id & password to authorize your Nook then exit Settings
Click on the shopping cart icon at the upper right
Open the menu | My catalogs.
Click on the + at the upper right and enter a name for your library and the Overdrive URL then click OK.
Now you can click on the library in My catalogs to go to the Overdrive site and check out books and they will open in Aldiko. I reassigned the search button on the quicknav to Aldiko with the Nook Touch Mods Manager that NookManager installs and now it works like every e-reader should out of the box.
UPDATE: Just noticed you had tried Aldiko before. My link is for an older version that works on the Nook just fine. I haven't had any reader app work with the browser downloading the .acsm then clicking on it. For some reason they don't get hooked up with the automatic open when you click on .acsm files. But with Aldiko you browse from inside the Aldiko app and it works fine. I believe this version of Aldiko will open without the SD card inserted but needs it inserted to download books.
Thanks for the detailed steps, will give that a try. By the overdrive url, you mean the library overdrive url?

Yep. Like http://brevard.lib.overdrive.com for my local Brevard County library.
Cool. that worked just right. With dropsync everything else also seems to fall in place.
Wondering if its possible to use the side buttons to navigate a book within the aldiko app?

There is a hack to the system key layout to remap the side buttons to volume control keys and Aldiko can use the volume controls to scroll. But the B&N reader doesn't use the volume control keys to scroll. So some people map two of the side keys to volume controls and leave the others as normal or don't use the B&N reader and use all four as volume controls. I really didn't like that idea so I spent the last week playing with Nook Touch Mod Manager / Nook Touch Patches and modifying them to be able to remap the side buttons to screen taps so they work with the B&N reader, Aldiko and just about any other reader you choose to install. Plus you can map long presses to open apps, bring up the menu, go back and any other NTMM action. I have a PM out to jeff_z the NTMM / NookTouchPatches developer (thanks a whole bunch for NTMM, NookTouchPatches and NookManager Jeff!) to see if he would like to merge my changes into NTMM. Keep an eye on the NTMM thread and one way or another I'll make the changes available in the next week or so.
Cool. That worked. Thanks
I used Android Commander.
First do a chmod 777 on the file in the shell,
then pull the file to c:
modify using notepad++ in admin mode
then a push on the nook with the modified file.
Reboot the Nook and voila! Works on the kindle app as well.
Overdrive and Nook Glowlight
Just in case you still wanted to put Overdrive on your rooted Nook Glow: I also successfully rooted with NookManager. (So simple! Thanks!) Found an older version of Overdrive 2.3.0.1 which works fine. Sorry I can't post the link, but go to freeware4android.net and search "android 2.1 overdrive media console". It should be about the fifth or sixth result down the list ending with "overdrive-media-console-download- 127505.html." I just downloaded the file to SD card in my nook, clicked open and it installed fine. Haven't tried Aldiko, but I like the one-click convenience of having Overdrive automatically open the .ascm library files.
Incidentally, when I registered my device, I also unchecked the "automatic updates" box in Overdrive settings, to prevent Overdrive from trying to update to a newer version that's not compatible with the device. Happy reading!

It looks like you cannot use the stock reader to open Overdrive books that you have downloaded. Is that correct? I would think that the reader app itself should handle the copy protection (since you can side load books using the Adobe app on your computer) but it doesn't seem to work that way...
I haven't tried the Aldiko reader yet - I don't find the Overdrive reader itself to be very usable for reading...

Does seem to make sense if you've downloaded a book using Overdrive you should be able to open it with the built in reader. Never tried it though as I'm happy enough with the OD reader.
Hey does anybody still have that older version of the Overdrive apk lying around? That freeware4android site looks like it's infested with malware these days.

Rooted Nook ST Glow and new Overdrive site
Not sure if this is the right thread to post this question: Has anyone else been unable to sign into their library from rooted nook ST after the library has updated to the new overdrive? Main reason I rooted my nook was so I could download library books directly. Now, I can see the main page fine and get to the sign in page, but after entering my information I get a generic error message. I have a nook simple touch with glowlight rooted with Nook Manager and using Opera mobile to get to library site. I'm thinking the new overdrive site just isn't compatible with android 2.1, but hoping someone out there has a solution.

I tried this and came away without success. I don't have an Overdrive login and so tried to use my library card number and got the error message you describe. But there's no problem with the display of my local portal using Opera Mobile, as far as I can tell--other than being painfully slow. I should add that I am using the old Overdrive app that seems to work best with the NST, not an updated version. Just out of curiosity I tried to start from the Opera itself and my library site. When I had selected a book I had to sign in, of course, and was met with the same error. This leads me to suspect a security certificate problem.
I also have a little non-registered KitKat phone which I use as a media player and it has the new Overdrive app on it so I tried again. This time everything went fine and I got my ebook. I couldn't see that book on my NST, not even sure if that's supposed to work but it seemed like the new version of the app was claiming it would if you set up your account properly so I set about doing that on the device. But when I tried to sign in with my library card number I got that same error!
So....maybe it's an issue right now with Overdrive--or the app--that will go away. It may also be that the security certificates needed to negotiate a book checkout have expired on the NST. I am using the updated certs. file discussed elsewhere on the forum, but it may not include whatever is needed for Overdrive. I know the app worked the last time I tried it, but don't recall when that was.
In general, I do not find it helpful to allow apps on the NST/G to autoupdate from the Market. I have turned off autoupdate on all of them. The chances are great that "improvements" will break functionality or severely hobble performance. Of course, log-in issues are complicated. I guess a logcat might reveal something but since the app interacts with the browser and the actual checkout of the book is done via the browser, I'm not sure what you'd learn.
Thanks for looking into this. Yes, I also have the older version of Overdrive on my nook st, and am using my library card sign in. The Overdrive app takes me to Opera mobile, and the library home page shows up no problem. It's the sign in page where I enter my library card number that has the problem. I tried signing in to a different library that has not updated their website yet, and no problem - was able to sign in and download a book and open it on the nook as usual. Security certs seems like a good point, or is it possible the older version of opera mobile might not be compatible with the new overdrive website? Since opera mobile displays the library home page just fine, maybe the sign in problem is something that will resolve itself later. Here's hoping!

So here's what I've tried so far:
1. Installed a more modern browser, Opera Mini. It's the last version that "works" on the NST (7.6.40234). I don't use it because there is no multi-touch zoom and it often has issues loading new pages in the same screen. Anyway, it gives exactly the same error for a log-in attempt, starting from the Overdrive app and proceeding as you describe. So it's less likely a old browser issue.
2. I asked member @tshoulihane to take a look at the possibility of a security certificate issue here (and his response follows that post). I do think it's odd that neither browser is throwing up a security error. I could track down a few more browsers, but I'm reluctant to put a bunch more junk on my NST.
3. I checked out a book on my PC and downloaded the acsm file. Then I transferred that to my NST and accessed the file through a file manager. The Overdrive app opened immediately and the download commenced without any problem. The book was readable. I don't know what the app does if you're working through it and the resident browser, but I didn't see any obvious place to put the acsm file and it didn't seem to matter. Once the book is downloaded you don't need the acsm file any more.
So...the app "works", or can work, given the requisite tools.
I've got a support ticket open with Overdrive regarding this issue. The initial response is not promising ("clear the browser cache, blah-blah-blah..."). I'm going to take a few screen shots and write a very basic reply to go with them, including most of what I've described here, but I'm not holding out much hope from that quarter.
Edit: after I sent the email to Overdrive I thought about another experiment that might be illuminating. I installed both Opera Mobile and Opera Mini (the versions for the NST) on my little KitKat "phone". They seemed to work OK accessing my local library, but Mobile crashed and closed once the Overdrive "sign in" icon was touched, and Mini gave the same error we are discussing. Hmm. I also tried accessing Overdrive from the browsers on my Nook Tablet (Dolphin and the native CM 12 browser) and the native KitKat browser on my "phone". Those worked just fine. So it's looking like some new requirement in the Overdrive web update may have left our NST browsers in the dust.
I tracked down a Dolphin 10.x browser which is the last of the series that sort of runs on the NST. Surprise, surprise! It threw up all kinds of security certificate messages as soon as I got to the Overdrive section, didn't even have to try to log in. I'll pass this along to @tshoulihane.
So I have 2 nooks, one with updated certificates, one with the original setup still. Both are happy with digicert (the old nook still has a couple f non-expired root certificates). I have UC browser installed - With that, https://overdrive.com shows a 'broken padlock' on the old nook, but no explicit warnings. If i try to sign-in from that page, I get a 'certificate expired'. However, I think the site is using google to provide login management (maybe only as an option), and it is the https://google.com certificate which is failing. So i an explain the old nook failing, but not the one with updated certificates (so long as you're using the 2nd certificates file which I uploaded).

Thanks for taking a look at this. Yes, I am using the second file (the "more complete"), and everything else from Kindle to Google Books is fine. If @c1gum hadn't brought up the Overdrive issue I would not have noticed it for awhile. So...a puzzle.
I guess I'll wait to see what the support tech at Overdrive has to say, although he doesn't yet have the information about the certificate panic with Dolphin. More likely than not it will be the standard line about updating the devices/apps/OS. I guess I'd better get screen caps of those certificate error details.
A workaround for now
OK, so this discussion has taken place in two different threads. Time to bring it back where it belongs so people can find the info.
Thanks to member @cjpicc, we now know that the UC Browser Mini 10.6.8 (copy attached below) can negotiate the Overdrive login at your local library branch and allow you to check out and download books all on your NST/G.
So far, no other common browsers used successfully on the NST/G for general purposes seem to be able to deal with the revamped Overdrive sites.
You can, of course, check out and download books on a PC, transfer the acsm file to your NST/G and access it with a file manager. That will open Overdrive and --if you're connected to Wi-Fi--download the full book to your device.
Edit: OK, not the best experience with UC browser. You can sign in, but the search bar does not show up so you have to go to the main library catalog and search there. At least that was my experience with the two libraries I tried.

[Q] Strange crashing issue when at a B&N Store

About 2 months ago, I eliminated the Noogie root on my NST Glowbug(after using
Noogie for ~9 months), reflashed up to factory F/W version 1.2.1, and then started
using the newest version of Nook Manager w/GApps.
I've been using this NST without any problems - it's been working like a champ.
Except recently when I went into a Barnes & Noble store.
I can use Wifi as much as I want anywhere else, but the moment my NSTG
pairs with the WiFi network at my local Barnes & Noble, it starts crashing, over
and over again.
I have approximately 5-7 seconds between crashes, so occasionally I can get in
and I'm able to disable wifi. When I do that, the crashing stops. Turn Wifi back on,
and it starts crashing. Also, as soon as I leave the store and am outside of the range
of their router, the crashing obviously stops. I can use Wifi at work, and at home without
any problems.
Just to verify that it was the store, I went back in there again tonite, and the same
problem occurred for the second time. Not a fluke.
I tried to use adb Konnect to ensure that adb wifi was disabled, but unfortunately, the
5-7 second crash interval made it hard to get in to try various things. I was able to do
simple things like disabling/enabling wifi, but that was about it.
I have never had this happen before - regardless of whether or not I was running vanilla,
or the Noogie root, I never had the device crash when at the Store. Only since I started
using the Nook Manager.
Has anybody else seen this behavior??
There are all kinds of intents flying around when you are on a B&N WiFi.
If they aren't handled properly it would probably crash the Nook.
This doesn't surprise me in the least.
If you deleted or disabled Home.apk, Library.apk, ReaderRMSDK.apk or Shop.apk this could easily happen.

I'd be posting this in the Nook Manage thread, but it's a dev thread, and I can never seem to get up to the magic
10-post limit. I guess I don't do chit-chat.
I removed the startups manager block on the B&N Reader app(or any other part of the B&N app suite),
and still ended up having both of my nooks crash when I took them to a B&N store. So the next step
is to use Nook Manager to remove/disable the B&N app suite.
I have both a base Nook Touch, and a Nook Touch Glowbug(or whatever the codename is)
Both formerly used the touchnooter root, but were then flashed back to factory, updated to 1.2.x, and then
the Nook Manager root was applied, plus the NTGAppsAttack module. In fact, I've done this twice, because
I tried to use the Nook Manager tool that removes/disables the B&N suite of apps, but that kills the
functionality of the gapps provided by NTGAppsAttack. I know - I read in the NTGAppsAttack thread that
that was not going to work, but I wanted to try it out anyways. Eternally hopeful.
It would be nice if:
1) Nook Manager would play nice with NTGAppsAttack, IE if it is disabling/removing the B&N app suite, then
it replaces the system functionality with something else that will allow the Market to continue working. I've
read a bit on how hard this is, and how much the B&N apps hack up the system libraries. Just sayin'.
2) When I used Nook Manager to restore the B&N apps suite, that did not restore functionality of the Play
Market. It still can't go into any one particular app, even to look at it, without market crashing, and I've
lost any linkage to the "My Apps" functionality. The Market(via the webpage on a desktop), and the
Market on the Nook, are completely de-linked. When I can get into the market on the Nook, (assuming
it doesn't crash), the "My Apps" section shows Smoopa Price Checker as something I've downloaded.
So, whatever the Nook Manager is doing to remove the B&N Apps is not a completely symmetric function
compared to restoring them. Something is getting lost in the translation.
I will sacrifice my N2E - ensure that the B&N Apps are disabled(at the expense of google market not
ever working again) and try the test at the B&N Store to see if even ripping out the B&N apps completely
will stop it from crashing.

You are welcome to work on this. If you look at the disable_all_bn script in the /scripts folder on your NookManager SD card, you'll get a list of all the components that are disabled. Play around with that until you have a list of which components are essential for the Google Apps.

You can see in restore_all_bn that the restore simply moves all of the disabled apps back to their original location. If there's something getting lost, it's probably happening somewhere else.

I know, it doesn't make any sense. The remove script is just putting a select group of apk's into the disabled-app subdirectory,
and the restore does a mv * from that directory right back to the app subdir. Plain and simple. If there was something going on with
the dalvik cache, where it was building up cruft that could cause problems, then I could understand it, but that should only affect
you after a removal, not after the restore(or so I'd think). I tried clearing it anyways, and that didn't seem to help.
I'll try fiddling with those B&N remove/restore scripts, and see if I can get things working again.
The other thing that I didn't mention is that while I was using the touchnooter root, I never had problems with either of my Nooks
wigging out while at the B&N store, so it's not clear to me why the B&N apps would be acting up in this situation, assuming that
they are even responsible.
Further experimentation required. Plus the B&N store is right next to Best Buy, so that's always a fun trip anyways.
No Wifi to B&N
I have a wifi issue that sounds related. I also rooted my NST (1.21) with Nook Manager. Wifi works well in "relaunch." However, I cannot access my B&N account with wifi to sync my books when I am in the B&N library. So, I can't add, archive, or delete any books. And, I can't shop for books on the B&N site since the wifi connection always fails.
I would be happy to learn of a work around or other solution. I wish I could post this on the NookManager thread but I don't have enough posts to ask there.

Rooting Nook Simple Touch 1.2.1 Reccomendation

Hello! I have not rooted an android device in a lot of time, and I am basically a noob, but I do read a lot, and my first rooting more than year ago turned out to be a complete success, as far as my knowledge goes.
Now I have A Nook Simple Touch model BNRV-300 with current firmware version 1.2.1 and I would like to add more features to it, because for the price I got it it gives me NOTHING I need.
B&N Forcing updates over the air and registration using the Internet when I first start the device is RIDICULOUS and is evenworse than a DRM protection!
product containing such DRM should be banned for sale at least in Eirope by the Customer PRotection, for limitations they imply on the users!!!
now lets return to the topic and my QUESTION
I already said I have a Nook Simple Touch BNRV-300 with current firmware version 1.2.1
My question is: Currently what is the best method to Root this device in order to get access to more features software? I am looking for method that includes making a BACKUP. Is there currently and entire Custom firmware released that will REPLACE the existing useless firmware on the Nook Simple touch?
What custom apps, kernel, and roms can you reccoment me?

Ditto what OverByter said. The NookManager is, in my experience, a very simple and foolproof method. Whether you decide to pursue GoogleApps, etc., is up to you. But for root and a simple initial set-up, NM is the way to go, IMHO.
Just rooted and installed google market

Hi, following the advice from this thread, I just rooted my Nook Simple Touch GlowLight. I have previously rooted nook simple touch with the same process.
The market is working, gmail is working. What I dont understand is how to make it user friendly etc. How do I make it like a tablet. I installed some launchers but I have to go into apps and then select it to run it everytime.
I am just wondering what should be done once you have rooted and googlified the nook.
Any recommendations on launchers, themes any other enhancements and ideas to use a rooted nook will be really helpful.
Thank you!!
I tried a bunch of launchers when I first rooted and finally settled on ADW. For me it was easy to set up (once I got over the "I don't know anything about Android" feeling) and I initially used the selected app screen as my "Home". There are two ways to do that. One, after installing ADW and rebooting the Nook it will ask which app you want to use to open "Home" and you will have a chance to set that one as default (either the B&N stock Home screen or the ADW app drawer). And/or, you can use NTMM to assign the QuickNav "Home" button to ADW Launcher.
Pretty much any launcher should provide you with the same options once installed when you reboot.
So that's what I used to do but I eventually went back to the B&N "Home" screen on boot and then after that I can access it from a long press of the "N" button (again, you can assign that with NTMM). I've almost completely reassigned by QuickNav buttons (except for Library). See this post (result in #4).
I've also done the multi-touch enhancement (nice for Opera Mobile and some other apps), No-Refresh and FastMode2 (contrary to what the posts seem to indicate about FastMode2 I have found that the app does indeed toggle the mode on my NST so I assigned it to one of the side buttons and No-Refresh to another one).
Lots of info on various apps out there. Here's my "short" list of what worked for me (in no particular order):
Cool Reader (I only use this to set the screen saver to my current book!)
Perfect Viewer
Crosswords
Amazon Kindle (the enhanced version posted elsewhere on XDA)
Orion PDF viewer
QuickPic
PrinterShare
Kingsoft Office
Dropbox
ES File Explorer
Places (Google Maps variant)
Email (gave up on Gmail--this app is found in another XDA post as well)
Opera Mobile
NewsHog
BBC News
Those are on my ADW home screen along with the GenieWidget for local weather and a widget for Clean Master. I've divided the app drawer behind the home screen into two categories, "everything" and "utilities" which is where I leave my focus and there the following are found:
ADB Konnect
Clean Master
No-frills CPU Control
Nook Touch Mod Manager
No Refresh settings
Root Browser
Rotation Locker
Search Market (got rid of Amazon Market which was giving me a lot of trouble)
Settings (B&N)
Tasker
WiFi File Transfer
Other apps that hide in the "everything" section because I almost never need to access them are:
ADW Config
AdAway
FastMode2
News and Weather (Genie Widget)
No Refresh
RockPlayer
Superuser
etc.
I also did the triple Flash installation described elsewhere but it really only works with SWF files as far as I can tell and only with Flash-able browsers like Dolphin (which has other issues). And I did a Framework-res.apk mod to slightly grey the backgrounds of menus so that some of the "invisible" menu options that come with many apps can actually be read).
I don't know how many times I've made backups and redone things, trying to find what works for me (mostly reading, some browsing). My Nook is still fully B&N functional, as far as I know. The only thing I have not tried is logging on in the store. Except for the inadequacy of Opera Mobile (I've tried every other browser known to humans and aliens), the set-up actually is pretty nice

Great list! Didn't know about Wifi transfer. Very usefull.
What version of Crosswords did you get to work on your nook. I couldn't get any of the ones I tried to work?

Yes, I really like WiFi Transfer. Saves a lot of wear and tear on that USB jack. The only limitation I could find (beyond the 5 MB file size limit for the free version) is that transfers to the internal My Files folder are not updated in the Library unless you reboot. So I just use the sdcard.
You're right, no market crossword apps work properly on the rooted Nook. I accidentally stumbled across a version of Crosswords that does, however. Check your PMs.

I moved my question to the help thread, I think it was the wrong thread here...

[Q] NST General Questions

Hello fellow Nookers,
I've been lurking around here for the past couple of years, only to join about 8mo ago. I find the amount of knowledge and willingness to help at XDA fascinating. There are clearly A LOT of intelligent people here that could probably solve many of the worlds problems, if collectively asked. So, a big virtual thumbs up to all of you.
Well, enough of the mushy stuff. I'm here for a reason right? I have quite a few general questions regarding things such as... a rooted nook, Google Play, .apk files, transferring .apk files, searchmarket, etc.. Rather than start separate threads, or jump on many existing threads, I figured it might be easier to list them in one thread.
So, here we go.
Above all other questions below, here is what I am ultimately after...
I am looking to download .apk game files from Google Play so that I can transfer/install them on my Kindle Fire HD. So why not root the KF? I have read posts that rooting a KF using Amazon Prime will render Prime useless. I need my Prime for watching movies/shows. The games I want from GP are not available on the less-than-stellar Amazon App Store. I value my KF device more than my outdated NST, which is why I have no issues rooting the NST.
Now for the questions...
(1) I've followed the [Root] NookManager post here at XDA ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040351 ) and successfully rooted my NST running 1.2.1. Per the post, there were quite a few steps not mentioned according to this nook devs page ( http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch/Rooting ). [Q] Are the below areas from nook devs not necessary when following the [Root] NookManager post?
After you have burned the uSD card
#3
At the Android Welcome Screen skip "Sign In"
Enable Location Services when given the option.
Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from ADW App Drawer.
Click the Menu button (On top at the right, next to the time.).
Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account (ensure the [email protected] format to link)
Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail.
Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine - it will do so later on if you give it a few minutes)
Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
(2) Before rooting, I changed the email address on B&N associated with the NST. The email with B&N matches the email I use for GP. However, the email on the NST, in account settings, is the previous email address. [Q] Is this an issue?
(3) When accessing GP on NST via the Browser App in ReLaunch, there are many games I cannot download. I get the message "This app is incompatible with your device". I've read a few posts online (outside of XDA) showing ways to spoof an older Android device to a current Android device. But, as with most things, it came with warnings and only working for devices running firmware higher than 1.2.1. [Q] Assuming this would trick GP into thinking I have a newer Android, is there a known way to accomplish spoofing a 1.2.1 device?
(4) Something worth pointing out... when accessing GP, and navigating to Settings/My Devices, "phone" is listed. However, when I go to Settings/Android Device Manager on GP, it states No Active Device Listed. [Q] Should there be a device in the Android Device Manager? If so, how to accomplish this?
(5) As it has been widely reported, the search feature on GP doesn't work when on the NST. For the record, I have noticed while in Settings, the search feature does in fact work. So, it has been suggested to use SearchMarket (which I have installed). However, this app seams to have its limitations. When I search for a game on SM, that I know is on GP, SM is not finding it. Also, the Market App within ReLaunch cannot find the game either. [Q] Is SM searching Market, and is Market different than GP?
(6) These next questions relate to downloading, rather than installing, apk files to the NST. Since my goal is to obtain apps from GP, that are not available via AAS, so I can install them on the KF, [Q] how can I have them sent to the mSD Card? [Q] Aside from using download/torrent sites to obtain .apk files, are there any "legal", safer, ways other than GP?
Well, I think that about covers it. I may regret saying this, but all of this came about because of one game... Blackout: Bring The Color Back. I am soooo hooked on that game. I first played it at Dave & Busters, and was hooked within minutes. I think I sat there playing it for a good 45 minutes. Then I found it on Apple's App Store. Now, I need it on the KF. If I could download this one game from GP, I would be ecstatic. LOL... can't believe I admitted that.
Thanks in advance.
Too detailed? I can dumb it down, if you think it'll help.

At the end of that guide did you follow and install the NTGAppsAttack package ?
If you read that guide it tells you the steps you read on nookdevs are some of the steps to sign in for first time to google.
I used NTGAppsAttack last night just fine. It is a little time sensitive so follow the intructions directly after installing.
Google recognized my NSTG instantly. The youtube trick is basically one of the methods to make google play acknowledge your device.

Maybe. Try suggested above and if does not work after a day go backup to your backup de-register nook and try again with other email.

NST is a android 2.1 device also known as Eclair.
Its an old version very old. Even those games you can run on the nook with norefresh/fastmode you will still sometime need to get hold of an older version thats supports 2.1.
Try Simon Tatham's Puzzles (the B n W at least)

Step one go to "Cog"->"Settings" on google play website. On right hand side click on EDIT on phone line and rename "phone" to be something better like "NST_1". Believe me you will regret not doing so when you have more than one!
Android Device manager requires a very up to date version GAPPS to work.
You want it to location your nook or blank it?

If your GAPPS updated itself then yes search may work. Searchmarket i expect does have different result ordering or interprets keywords slightly different or simply hides incompatible apps from you. Does it matter? You can use web version and install to device if your desperate.

No idea what AAS and KF mean. Personally I use titainium backup or esfile explorer to save my apks. You can get them on your NST using dropbox or over windows shares (samba) using esfileexplorer. If you get hold of version 1.6X of esfileexplorer it has option for white background still (might have brought it back in later versions). One advantage of saving your apks you can keep the version that does what you want not be forced to update to something breaks what you want like esfileexplorer.
Hmm KF = KindleFire?

a few handy APKs for rooted Nook Glowlight

So after several hours of hacking away at it, I never was able to successfully connect to the glowlight via ADB over USB but after uncommenting the line in the init.rc about adb on port 5555 I was able to connect over wifi. It turns out after doing some digging around in the system that the Glowlight is running the ANCIENT and Android 2.1 "Eclair" and getting usable apps for it is going to prove challenging unless some rocket scientist can figure out how to get a GAPPS pack flashed onto this.
Anyway, it took me some digging but I was able to find an old Cyanogenmod 5 build to grab some APKs from. I wasn't able to install ADW launcher or the stock 2.1 launcher, but I was able to get Launcher Pro running.
EDIT 8/20/14
Added working ADW Launcher. Will be adding Aldiko, Adobe Reader, Amazon Kindle App, Root Explorer, Busybox and a few others later.
And last but not least, I was able to install an older version of the Kindle app, so now my wife has access to both her Nook books and her Kindle books (came to the Nook from 1st generation Kindle). Next I'll probably throw Adobe and Aldiko on there just to get all the bases covered.
Well, if the system is the same, as in the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight, then list of working apps from this post may be helpful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49470538&postcount=1 . And, if I remember correctly, Kindle app needs an active internet connection to work properly. It may be more convenient to download them, and open in FBReader or AlReader (they both work well with .mobi files). I do not know if there would or would not be any Amazon file protection issues though. I do not shop there.

Kindle requires an active internet connection to download books just like the Nook software, but once they are on the device you're good to go. That list of apps is hardly useful though, because it doesn't have any LINKS! just a list of junk software this guy installed onto his nook.

Well... It is not so hard to google those apps you need. And it is not "just a list of junk software". It is a list of apps versions that do work on NST.

the point is that this device is running a version of Android that is officially well past EOL and most of those apps are REALLY difficult to find anymore. My point is that the user has the apps on his device, so why not do a simple 'adb pull /data/app/' and save us all some trouble. No amount of Googling is going to locate that which doesn't exist anymore. Since nobody else seems to care, I took it upon myself to do exactly that and throw these apps up here for others to use.
