I agree. Ability to have 2 free hands is a god send.
Movies look awesome man. I've been playing games as well and I love it. On the cons side, I don't like that the browser takes you to the mobile version of the websites.
There is so much to like. Everything feels a lot more natural. Typing, browsing navigation. Yum

I would have to say portability is the best quality. The biggest con for me is I can do everything on my EVO that the Tab can do. Im going to fully use my 29days to figure out if I want it or not.
7" is a great form factor for a tablet (sorry Steve). Soon there will be more competition in this field, but the build quality, large battery and full-featureness of the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be hard to match. I can see a few ways to improve the Tab: display with better viewing angles, refersh rate and lower power consumption, dual core Tegra 2 processor (although the software would need to take advantage of it), better camera, built-in software (driver and app) for FM radio chipset, worldwide integrated DMB TV tuner (currently only in some parts of the world), HDMI stand included with tablet (currently an expensive accessory), standard mini USB plug, . . . But otherwise the Tab is a pretty great device as it is now

The phone
Everything really. It really is 'one device does all'
When I'm on support duty, I need to lug around a netboot 'just in case' as well as my phone of course. Now can do it all from one device.
7" IS perfect. For me. (LCD Density app on the market helps get that little extra wiggle room, well recommended).
GF has an iPad that she enjoys, but she's getting frustrated by it's lack of flash more and more. Whilst she just uses it for email/browsing Perez whilst watching telly, it's been great. When she needs to do a bit of research, it's limitations are becoming clear. I've not had that issue. I've been able todo everything I need from it. (vnc'ing back to my linux box to handle work stuff, I have no problems with).
Also been able to setup my Everquest account to be able to be logged in and checked. Using vnc->Flash. It's slow, but it works. When I've tried todo that on the iPad, I've run into that whole 'no, you're not allowed todo that'. With the Tab (well, Android in general really), it's kinda the Unix philosophy, lots of little tools/apps that you can string together to let you work the way YOU want to.

hmm... Still annoyed that voice isn't as standard on the US models. That's just... well, stupid. Having to flash the euro rom works around it, but it's annoying to lose 3G for that. Unless it gets resolved properly soon (stock rom, and some app/mobile.bin that lets me use the mostly standard rom and get 3G AND get updates easily), I might look into the Skype/Google Voice solution that others have mentioned.
Wouldn't mind an earpiece so those rare moments I don't have the bluetooth headset, I can hold it up, and not mind looking silly. Maybe. Not sure. I'd like to have at least had the option.
The thing I really I love about my Tab is that it has turned my HTC Desire into just a phone, and my PC into something I just use during the day for work.
The Tab is now my primary method for internet and multimedia consumption when I'm not at my desk working.

The fact that it's small and I can stop downloading apps on my g1 that dosen't do well with many apps lol. Also I like that its not extremely light and dosen't feel too fragile.

This is one sweet piece of hardware. Actually, strike that. That doesn't do it justice.
This is... ahem... the coolest piece of gadgetry I have ever owned to-date. (Again, obviously trying to ignore the no-voice-calling horse**** -- and no, I can't leave that caveat off.)

Apple appeals to less intelligent people that thinks its fashion.
Imo the 10" tabs like ipad are to big and heavy to function well in the hands. It tire out my hands and you have to hold it in one hand to reach everything on the screen.
Its to big to have it with you all time and dont fit in the pocket. I can just take with me the laptop instead in the nice little bag.
I have the tab with me all the time. I dont have a phone with me anymore. It has perfect size and isnt to heavy. The screen resulotion does surfing better then on a phone and the 7" makes it easyer to see whats on it.
The sgt works well for chatting, atleast i can type fast as hell on it now. Almost the same as a regular keyboard.
Pretty entertaining games. Getting a little sick of Angry Birds now but there lots of fun game with pretty sweet 3D graphics.
Surfing works good altho the browser that came with the tab is a little stuttery. I use Opera most of the time now wich is super smooth for me and when i need flash to work or something isnt working correct in Opera i use Dolphin HD.
The screen is pretty good and watchin movies, reading books and magazines works great.
It feels realy good and sturdy even with the plastic back.
The battery seems to have no problem keeping up a whole day. I have bluetooth on the whole time, msn up and chatting alot, playing and surfing alot. Sitting next to my machine on my work and passing time with my little cute tab. And mine is going to get better because its still new. On my phone the battery time got a whole lot better after a while.
Hmm... what more, what more... Its just a sweet and imo perfect device.
The best is the screen of course. I love, love the big screen. At my office there are some hardcore iPad lovers and some Galaxy fans. And I have the biggest Galaxy screen!
I really like the brightness of the colors as well, everything looks so fresh and new. I get a lot of compliments from people around me, everybody wants to hold it. For me the 7inch was the deciding factor, 10inch is way too big for me, with my woman hands (at 1.60 m I don't have large hands). Working with the keyboard at landscape I can type really fast with just two fingers.
Considering I used to own WM devices before, I have to say I really, really like the Android platform. So I am not sure, that is the main reason but everything works really fast and downloads are easy.
I keep telling everybody that the Tab is a woman device, I can hold it in one hand, wonderful.
I think I haven't been this excited about a device for a long, long time.
It's 7" and fits right in one hand, the screen looks great, 2 cameras, I can type pretty fast with 2 fingers now, or swype. I do a lot of my writing on it while watching movie. And I can use it as a phone if I so desire.
Plus it's the best tablet that I can stick into my pocket and be on the go. Now I got to figure out whether I go for the T-Mobile or Verizon version first.

Same here, I don't have the Tab, & just sold my Evo, but it's like...... 7" isn't that much for something that is just a bigger Evo LOL, would really prefer 10"
But since I'm going to WP7, I may get one eventually, if not an Archos & flash it to get the official market. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with an iPad, I really don't know. 7" just doesn't do it for me since every smartphone with a touch screen I've owned has been 3.7" to 4.3"
& it's like, now they are already talking about their new Galaxy Tab. I think I'll wait for the thinner, faster version then.
Camera zoom would be nice too. I mean I can live without 720p recording.. I guess that's what smartphones are for instead of smarttabs?
Recently I was waiting til the new Samsung Galaxy tab was officially announced to see if it would come with sd card and/or usb....which it didnt so now i dont know what i want...I dont want to acer iconia because it just looks ugly...and same thing for the transformer...they both just look like ugly devices to me..so my only other pick is the Moto Xoom which i actually like the way it looks. But is the Xoom worth the purchase...i hear its a lil slow and jerky...has the 3.1 update fixed that issue?? and does the sd card slot work now??
I own a XOOM and my brother has a Transformer. While I agree them Xoom looks better and is more sturdy, I'd much rather the transformer. The included keyboard is a big plus, as well as the built in usb otg connection.
Edit - forgot to mention how very unimpressed everyone outside of the US is with Moto and its approach to updating the Xoom. Also, not a squawk about why its taking so long.
I think you should just go with what you like. The xoom has a keyboard case now. And as for Moto, updates will come when they come. Most people have rooted and updated anyway. There is plenty of support on XDA for whatever you get. You could always wait and see what comes out in the next few months. Newer processors, different screens, and even support from software companies. Remember you dont have to rush, take your time and make decisions you will be happy with.
But is the XOOM still laggy?? and for rooted users are there good roms out that take full advantage of the processors?
Well, thanks to brd, I've got my xoom overclocked and running stable at 1.7 and I have to say with the 3.1 upgrade, even at stock speeds the xoom is smoooooth as silk. I had the iconia and promptly returned it as the bootloader is locked, and the still have released no source code. Full custom roms won't come till I cream sandwich with any android tablet, as Google won't release the honeycomb source code. But owning a xoom, I am pretty sure it will be one of the first to get the upgrade, just as it was the first with 3.1

I've had mine for two weeks, I absolutely love it. I have no idea why people are so down on it! I had the acer iconia for a week beforehand, the body was pulling apart, the screen was awful and the shape was just... odd. I trust motorola to make quality products, not just software, that was a huge plus for me. As for the USB and SD card, with google music out now, are you really going to put 32+ gigs worth of info on your tablet?
I use mine for college text books, email, surfing, file transfer, etc and have yet to be even close to disappointed. I don't have any experience with the transformer, but given my experience with a less than quality build of the acer, I would be worried about the quality of the asus as well, just my two cents.

Yes, actually the 32 gig expansion would be awesome. I don't want to be forced into paying for Google music just to have a good list of music access able. Then on top of that pay verizon for the data transfer to listen to my own music. I know I can root for it, but initially I wasn't going to root till after the 4g upgrade. I'm rather disappointed, maybe I confused myself expecting to have the SD work soon, and having 4g before any other tablet, but I'm pretty sure I was just mislead.

The great thing about the Xoom is the AOSP experience. It's unfettered Android. All the other devices have each respective company's own flavor of Android which is something I, and many others hate. As with other devices that are AOSP, it will probably get all the updates much sooner than other devices.
When the Xoom came out I was determined to get it, because I'm a tech-whore and needed to have a device with Honeycomb. When I finally got around to purchasing the Wifi version upon it's release, I found myself wondering what exactly I was going to do with this thing...I couldn't figure it out. Now I use it all the time. I don't regret spending the $600 one bit.
had the Xoom for 5 days now, was a little aprehensive with what I'd read about the screen and lag but I'm so glad I took the plunge. I'm running 3.1 stock on an untouched Xoom, I have no issues with lag and everything is super smooth. I wanted it for surfing, games, comics and video and it is fantastic at these. I'd been using my wife's Ipad for a while and the Xoom just knocks the spots of it in all areas.
The slow and jerky performance is still here, but that appears to extend to ALL honeycomb tablets. Also, this only happens in portrait and upside down orientations. Absolutely no choppiness in my experience with a static background in regular landscape.
Try it for yourself... 0 deg is completely smooth. 180, 90, -90 are all choppy. Do yourself a favor and only use I in native orientation, heh.
Aside from that minor niggle, honeycomb, and the xoom as a whole, are absolute dreams. Coming from a particular competing product, as well as two hacked Android tablets, I can say that the xoom is the first time I've been satisfied with the tablet concept.
Buy one; you won't regret it. After all, you can always return it if you're not crazy about it.
PS. With bigrushdog's kernel, you can use SD.
Absolutely avoid the Xoom. Unless you enjoy paying too much, no updates at all, lack of support, non-functional hardware, etc.
It's incredibly heavy and bulky. The touch screen is not too responsive, and theres significant motion blur, notably on red.
It's also very slow. For my money you'd be better off waiting for quad core tablets. These phone processors simply can't cut it on a larger screen.
Not to mention the Xoom 2 leak.

I say... avoid everything with android 3.0 and beware of 3.1 tablets. why? because there are only about 40 apps that are optimized for honeycomb...optimized not full supported. Its strange for me that big companies arent excited about supporting tablet format (maybe the fact that we are only %0.3 of the users). Also the games that are suppossed optimized for tegra 2 are old apps from the ipad with a little light effects or glom ,etc. but the gameplay still laggy as in the ipad.
Also i like to say that the 3.1 update is a kick in the balls for users and devs. I purchased every game that it has come out from gameloft and they stop wrking after the update, only asphalt 6 after a patch gameloft send me. >Then they send me a link that they werent responsible for faulty updates...and they are right. I downloaded xmen arcade and it happens the same. try reset, hardreset and everything and nothing, support told me to wait for them to fix it or wait for google to fix it...its just the update that messed with games and apps.
My advice if you still going to buy....buy the transformer, they give you more for the money and your not missing anything the xoom have.
If your trying to get into the android tablets, then I would say the Xoom is very nice or the transformer has a attachment to a key bored, How I went on of buying one was I was comparing it to the iPad 2 and I'm a sucker when it comes to lil features like the camera Is way better on the Xoom (Front and Back) The stereo speaker is also a major plus, I like how to plug it to my TV all I needed was a 8$ Mini hdmi wire, Pretty sleek body, the 32gigs of space is plenty I can't seem to even fill 5Gigs of space, Idk why people are crying for the SD slot so much, Just root it and install the kernal, No hacking is required for the Xoom just get what you want and be done. My own thing I don't like about android in general, is their apps. but its w/e
also on the new 3.1, there is next to no lag or you can hack it and make it speedier its all up to you.

Had mine for almost 3 weeks and for me, this is the best $600 investment I've done. Touch screen response is excellent, I have yet to experience any lags and it feels (in regards to quality and workmanship) every bit as I expected it to be. In some aspects, it has even surpassed my expectations in performance and battery life! Not regretting in any sense the money spent and all the accessories I got for it (leather portfolio case, car charger, mini HDMI cable).
At work, I had the opportunity to play with iPads, iPads 2, Playbooks and I do not regret my decision to go with the Xoom. Everything I need to do I can do with it, that was one of the considerations I made while "checking out" all the alternatives out there and I'm really happy with the end result. Using it daily for EVERYTHING, it complements my HTC G2 phone perfectly and can't hardly put it down.

The xoom is a great device but I don't like that there are two types of screens, neither of which are as good as the in-plane switching TFT design or the PLS in the new samsungs. Vertical viewing angles on the xoom are subpar, especially for the price point, in my opinion.
The light leakage issues on all these tablets is also a concern of mine and seems to be directly related to QC issues with the panel manufacturers.

Im on week 3. This Xoom wifi is my first tablet but I played with them all and liked the xoom better. I love it. I think the market will come with time. Devs are starting to get into honeycomb. There are a few software quirks with exchange 2003 and FB,for instance, for me, but I have no lag at all and I love this machine.

Otherwise avoid Xoom at all cost.
Also if you don't mind paying overpriced device with non functioning hardware and promised hardware upgrade which is not happened after couple of months.

Has anyone else that has purchased an Kindle Fire been having second thoughts?
I think the main reason that I'm feeling this way is the whole thing feels sluggish, and the entire experience is frustrating. I did not buy the KF for a media consumption device; I bought it with the intention of rooting it, and having a $200 full-featured Android tablet, and having done so, something still feels off. It's extremely frustrating that I spent hours trying to get a custom wallpaper, and while I understand that it's a known-issue (So many threads made everyday...)
I played with my friends G2 today, which by no means is a new phone, and it (felt like), it kicked the KF's ass in speed. I just don't understand this at all. This (afaik) is a single core 800MHz device that feels more fluid than a 1GHz Dual Core. Is there something I'm missing?
Now, I'm new to Android, so I have absolutely no idea if this is a software issue that will get resolved (Honeycomb / Ice Cream Sandwich?), how long a wait that will be. (I understand that no one knows the answer to that.) Or... Is this just the hardware that $200 will buy you? I understand they're selling each KF at a loss, maybe I had higher expectations than I should have.
I noticed in a local Best Buy Black Friday ad, that the Acer Iconia 7" tablet will go on sale for $190, which has spurred thoughts of returning my KF, and purchasing the Iconia. Can anyone think of a good reason not to?
Please excuse my ignorance, I really am trying to learn something here. Will these issues improve with time, once custom ROMs start getting developed for the KF?

First off, welcome to the forums! and yeah, general is a pretty decent place for this sort of thing imo.
I think, if you're looking for a full featured android tablet for under $200, and are willing to brave the black friday madness to get it, then by all means, return your kindle and go for the Iconia. It's got better specs, cameras, honeycomb, etc - and lets face it, amazon designed the kindle to be just that, a kindle. Whatever android functionality we get past that should be looked at as a bonus to what was already there imo.
I've owned an asus transformer as my primary android tablet for close to 6months now, and got the kindle intending it to be mostly a device for media, so I was pleasantly surprised how well it did as an android tablet as well. I actually ended up falling in love with the size and ease of one-handed use of the 7" tablet, and am debating ditching the transformer and either going with just the kindle, or picking up a more powerful 7" tablet myself.
Don't get me wrong, I love the kindle and will definitely be hanging onto it - but one of the more main reasons I got it was it's integration to all of amazons media services.
I think you'll notice a considerable increase in speed and smoothness with the tegra 2 and more notably the 1gb of memory, especially if you root the iconia and install a more cut down rom.
The only thing I will say here is having used both the kindle and a 10" honeycomb tablet now... I'm not entirely sure how i'd like the honeycomb interface on a 7" tablet... it might almost feel too cluttered - but thats an ocd person with a very minimalist taste speaking.

I've seen quite a few complains about sluggish performance but I honestly haven't seen any of that after rooting and switching to go launcher. There was some noticible slow downs changing orientation of the device or just simply scrolling throught the carousel when I was using the stock launcher but that seems to be all gone now. Ive been playing Pandora while surfing on opera with several tabs open haven't seen any lag at all. Maybe im not stressing my tablet enought? Idk what other ppl do on it but coming from an ipad 1 im very satisified with my purchase . ICS is suppose to have similar ram usage to GB so I think the 512 ram should be suffice atleast for my usage.

I love the 7" form-factor myself; the only doubt that I'm having right now is battery life. It seems to be 5 hours of casual WiFi browsing, which is ridiculously low compared to the KF. The other features totally make it worth it. Mini-HDMI and Micro-SD would definitely be nice to have, as well as GPS? Jeez.
Edit: If I do return it, should I unroot it, is there a process to return it to factory settings?
Yeah, 5 hours battery life is a bit rough - although again to reference my experiences with the transformer, at least, a cut down Rom will likely help that a decent bit.

If you return any tablet you've rooted by all mean unroot it. It not only helps if you get a clerk who knows what to look for (and refuses your return justifiably as rooting voids warranty) but also it's good form. It avoids "surprises" for whomever gets your tab afterwards.
Having owned the Iconia A100 for about 2 weeks before returning it (battery life, viewing angles, Acer possibly leaving tabs and lack of dev support) I must say it's a fine little tab. Only 8G internal but uSD offsets, 1GB RAM, quality build and reported ICS in January are real pluses. Price ($330) is steep but if you can get it on BF then do so.
Now that root has been achieved on the NT, it's blows the doors off the KF (specs, battery life, etc). Seriously look into it as a replacement for the KF.
BTW I would not count on HC or ICS for the KF. No reason for Amazon to do that as it doesn't add revenue to buying anything from Amazon. B&N only upped the NC to 2.2 Froyo after almost a year on 2.1 then stopped.

Do you have a link for NT root? I can't find it and I am holding off on buying one until I see what's possible on it.
I already own the HTC flyer referenced in my .sig and I don't think anything comes close to it speedwise since it has a 1.5 GHz single core processor. And I've played with the Dell streak 7 which is dual core 1 GHz. Since app so few apps can actually use the second core it feels slower by comparison. It has 512 memory like the KF and I think that's much of the reason it seems so much slower. I used the V6 whatever script by Zepp-somebody (as you can see I'm just horrible with names) from here on XDA and it made a big difference. So I'd guess the Fire would also benefit from tweaked minfrees and OOM settings also. Considering some of that 512 is given to video I think almost all lag is actually the Android OS moving things out of memory and killing apps to make room for the new app or the app you're returning to.

I have to add that I tried quite a few devices before settling on my 7". I brought home a couple, the Iconia screen was just unacceptable period, the angle you will want to view it the most is the worst, every Iconia I've seen has this problem on both sides of the border. Not to mention not so great battery life although I did find it better than the reviews, and random FCs. I eventually settled on a Flyer and it's miles ahead of the Iconia, what a polished device, it just works, so smooth, has a really nice screen, and is solid built.
I'm here cause I'm looking at the KF myself for my kids, but it sounds like it will be more trouble than it's worth to get them working north of the border. I tried a Vox for a couple of days and it was just so buggy, slow and locked down.

I also considered the Flyer when I bought the A100. The digitizer for note taking attracted me but not paying upwards to $70-80 for the pen. No HC was a turn-off with little hope of upgrade. That plus a couple articles spectulating HTC getting out of the tab business broke the deal for me. But I have read that the Flyer is a serviceable device indeed!

Sure. You'll need to be familiar with ADB (but then we all should).
Keep in mind the Search function is your friend!
To be completely honest, most of the things that I've noticed have performance issues are the Amazon-specific things -- the bottom buttons, the stock launcher, etc. In fact, everything else, now that I've rooted it, runs just fine even when I limit the processor to 600MHz per core.
I really am pretty sure the biggest performance thing is Amazon's modifications to the Android stuff. So, that *may* be fixed in upcoming updates. Or, heck, we'll just get a good custom rom sometime!
I've noticed intermittant sluggish performance only on Silk Browser. Using Opera Browser instead solves this and is much faster browsing experience.

This. I'm thinking it won't be too long before they start the ROM game...or hoping. I wouldn't keep the fire with its stock interface; I also bought it as a tablet. That said, the thing has been out a WEEK and they've already made leaps and bounds. The thing was rooted in like 12 hours, they've got CWM on it (just can't navigate easily) and I think they'll work out the kinks and start romming. My hope is for CM9, myself.

True enough but regardless keep your hopes and expectations realistic. Remember that this device was not designed to be an open android tablet. The overlay and mods from Amazon might be tough to completely delete or bypass. Could be wrong but even so it's a $200 device. It will only ever be that. Which is fine but it is what it is.
I own a flyer also and it is a great tablet. I also bought the Fire for what is was advertised for, media content from Amazon. I don't intend on rooting because I think it performs just fine as it is. For your kids, watching movies, games and reading, I think they would enjoy this 7 inch device.

At this point, I have to say the Fire is a keeper for me. What put it over the edge was that I was able to sideload the ereader.com app and read my books in full screen (I have been using this site for ebooks for more than a decade and probably have 200+ books in that library). The ereader app won't let me unlock my books on my Archos Honeycomb tablet and my HTC Flyer on Gingerbread will unlock the books, but the app is the screen size of a phone and I can't figure out how to make it bigger.
The Fire is the only device I can stream Amazon Instant Video without stuttering and allows me to use Netflix and Hulu too.
I've managed to sideload my manga reader apps and some other apps I love.
I can't plug a hard drive in, but I can stream with my Go Flex satellite.
Surfing isn't any better than any other device I own (maybe a little bit slower), but I can live with it for the other benefits.
Still not giving up my other tablets though
Expecting a "full featured" tablet from a $200 tablet is silly. The Kindle wasn't built to be a rooted device, it wasn't built to do all the things that Android tablets can do (GPS, bluetooth, video/voice calling, etc), it was built to be a media consumption device and a reader. It does both of those things well, and anything else it can do is just extra goodness. If you need more storage, GPS, bluetooth, or any of those other features... I'd recommend going with another tablet. You'll be spending more, but you get what you pay for.

I have a good gaming PC (i5 2500K, 8GB RAM, GTX 560Ti graphics etc.) and I am thinking that I may not use the tablet as much because of it. I know it's cheap anyway, but I don't want to buy it if I'm going to rarely use it
The screen lifting issue seems quite common and something which would bug me no end

To be honest, i haven't had any problems what so ever, but then again, you are going to hear more negative comments around here as people are more likely to talk about issues as people like myself are actually using it, etc.
I have consoles, a vita, and a gaming pc. I dont use the tablet as a gaming device, i use it more for consumption (news, media, etc).
The DAC is fine, i have Beyerdynacmics, Audio Technica's and a pair of Kilpsch S4's. It may not be the most outstanding quality i have heard but its perfectly fine. You wont be disappointed. For its price point, this tablet is an absolute blast, its quick, smooth, battery friendly (currently on stock) and has a beautiful screen (especially compared to my HP Touchpad).
Finally, its a 7". My ideal size, but then again, its really up to you dude.
The size of the tablet doesn't bother me because to me the iPad is too big/heavy, it's just simply whether or not I'll end up using it more than what I anticipate. I mean, it's a MASSIVE step-up from my iPod touch, but then again, I don't really use that much for anything other than music.

Do you plan on using the Nexus 7 mainly for gaming then? I personally believe while Nexus 7 is good for gaming but it's so much more. I don't believe it's fair to compare your PC to a tablet when it comes to gaming though.

What percentage of Nexus 7 do YOU actually think have this problem? If you are just going by your impression from the forum then I have to say that would be very skewed. Almost everyone who has that problem will complain but those who don't are probably too busy enjoying their Nexus 7 to even bother creating a thread with the title "All's good folks!".

I should've elaborate a bit. Some people recommend the Nexus 7 because with it having a Tegra 3 CPU and 12 core GPU, some people mention that it's a great gaming device. I'd be interested in a few games, sure, but it's not going to be a primary gaming device by any means. I am sure the percentage of Nexus 7s that have the issue are much lower than what most think and I suppose more people would complain that theirs is faulty rather than people writing to say theirs is fine.
I wasn't expecting phenomenal audiophile sound quality, but it was alarming the amount of people saying it was really bad but then I suppose that could be down to the source material (YouTube vs FLAC etc.) or the earphones/headphones of the user.
I have the money and I don't really need/want anything else right now, but at the same time there's this niggling thought it the back of my head saying 'What if I buy it, open it then use it like once a week?'. It's almost like I do want it but I don't at the same time :/

My experience with the device was overwhelmingly positive, although mine was slightly defective. I've been missing it terribly these past three days. Our situations are actually pretty similar, since I've never wanted a smart phone and the only tablet I've ever used was a Fire, which I returned before Christmas because it wouldn't let me watch sideloaded videos in fullscreen. Stupid reskin.
I returned my 16 to Sam's Club due to screen lift, and last night I talked myself into mail-ordering its little sister from the Play store for two reasons.
Firstly, they have the best return policy in case I get another defective unit. Secondly, Google can afford to raise its standards for the 8 shipments now that pre-orders for that one are out of the way. If they intend to root out this assembly defect or ramp up quality control, they're going to be more thorough with the model that isn't backordered. Right now the 16 isn't available from the Play store, so I convinced myself not to wait because I enjoyed using it so much.
In terms of capacity, I was surprised by how little I needed the extra space because, although I watch a lot of movies and TV shows, it's pretty easy to set up Wifi streaming from shared folders on your PC. And you can just copy shared files onto your device through an Android explorer app if you're heading out the door. It's as quick and easy as you can configure it to be, so I didn't need to load up 10 gigs of television at a time like I thought I would. I don't have a TV, so maybe watching stuff on a tablet isn't a priority for you. Yes, I'd rather have a 10 inch screen for this, but the Nexus 7 is large enough for immersive viewing if you have good headphones, and a smaller device is better when you're lying in bed.
I think the best thing about owning a tablet is that you don't need to sit in one place when using it. And it's hard to understand how liberating this feels until you try it. Sort of like using a wireless game controller. You can sit on the porch at night and watch Arrested Development, check your email, do online banking, whatever.
As for gaming, it sounds like you don't have a portable device, so you'll definitely get some mileage there. Touchscreen controls are a little bit forced for certain genres, but really satisfying for puzzle, arcade, and strategy games. The quality of games being developed for touchscreens is improving, and even Squaresoft has gotten into the mix by releasing a relatively pricey but very well received revamp of FFIII. I'm trying to save my Play money, so the only game I purchased was Osmos HD, which is pretty old but still well supported. Great game. And there are other titles on the horizon that I'm really excited about, like Asphalt 7 and Fieldrunners 2.
I don't think you'll regret buying a tablet, or find it reminiscent of using an iPod touch. And you should only be worried about getting a defective unit if you don't trust the return policy. I would recommend buying the 8 from Google if you think that will be enough for you. Otherwise, wait to buy the 16 from a store that doesn't make you nervous.

I think you should look at the ability to be mobil and rather its something you need or want. I hardly ever use my tablet at home other then reading in bed or outside on deck for a quick search.
So to better answer rathere we can convince you its worth while will depend on your need to be mobile. I love myself a 500. Only it will not fit in my purse.

The monetary value of that extra space is entirely dependent on your needs. If you don't know what those needs are, go with the larger capacity.
I would call and ask about their exchange policy, assuming they're still in stock.
I can order one and have it delivered for Tuesday. Tempting.
Still undecided haha, don't know what to do. It's not a device I NEED, but one I want but then don't want it to basically end up being a £199 paperweight (If I end up not using it much). It's one of those things where I'm not really sure how much I'd use it unless I had one?
Do you have a tablet already? It sounds like the question you're asking yourself is not "do I need a Nexus 7?" but "do I need a tablet?"

I don't have a tablet, no. The only current electronic devices/equipment I have are my gaming PC, Xbox 360 and iPod Touch 4G (I don't have a mobile phone).
I didn't need or want this tablet either. I've got a Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and really didn't think a 7" was for me. After buying one for my son for his birthday and briefly playing around with it, I was really blown away with how smooth this tablet is. I was able to buy the last one at my local Staples and absolutely have no regrets. This device now goes everywhere with me; something I couldn't do with my 10.1.
If you're on the fence as I was, I'd suggest picking one up while you can. There's not really any risk of losing money as they're selling like crazy on Craigslist and eBay. I don't think you'll have a problem with getting your money back.
Also, my son's 8 and my 16GB have 0 issues.

I got mine to hack on. Everything else is a plus. The first time I rooted my phone and flashed a custom ROM I was hooked. I got a galaxy nexus for the Dev support same for the 7. With a nexus device you will always get firmware updates first and there is a ton of developer support on all nexus devices... but if you don't have a mobile phone then I doubt you care about that. It is extremely addicting to root and tweak/ overclock your device to get the full potential out of your hardware. In my opinion it would be worth it just to get exposed to a open source community. Its something no iPhone/iPad user will ever experience on their device. One of my favorite things to do is comparing benchmark test to see what kind of performance increase I get from different Roms kernels and tweaks. If you've never had an android device then you are going to be spoiled because jellybean provides by far the best android experience so far. So in short if you want a device you can't have total control over and discover a whole new world... then any android device is for you. The 7 is especially nice because the hardware is top of the line. If you get a defective one you can always return it for a new one. I would suggest getting it from a retail store if you could just because its easier to return a defective device through a retail store.

Yeah, I love tinkering about with stuff (Started with the PSP then got Motorola RAZR V3i, ZTE Blade etc.) and the idea of a Nexus tablet interested me from the very moment it was announced but not sure if I'd use the device for what it's meant for (Media consumption). I might add that I'm going to university to study Computing in September and there's free WiFi all over campus.
If you like tinkering then I would say get it. Do alot of reading on rooting and flashing custom Roms before you jump in because you can brick it, however, with nexus devices all the factory images are available so its pretty hard to jack it up beyond repair. If you've never had a device that runs an android operating system then I would say you don't know what your missing... and while it was designed for media consumption it offers a lot more than that... but if you really feel like you don't know what you would use it for then maybe it isn't for you...

Nvidia's first in-house android device is due out Q2 of this year (it seems they are aiming for a June release date) - and I am a bit surprised by the lack of conversation going on here at XDA about this device!
Why are (or aren't) you getting a Project Shield? Right now everyone is only able to speculate on price and exact availability, but as it draws closer to June we are sure to get loads of more information.
I'll go first!
I will be ordering one as soon as they become available. This is exactly the device I have been waiting for, for several reasons.
First, I have always never enjoyed on-screen joysticks/buttons as a control for touch-based games. It seems like a backwards way to do it. This eliminates that issue and will make me actually purchase some of these neat Android games.
Secondly, I am a PC gamer at heart, and the one thing I have always been jealous of the XBOX/PS3 guys is that they can lay back on the couch when they get home from work and relax while playing their favorite games. I already use a controller with a bunch of games on my PC (exclusing FPS and Strategy), so this seems like a natural fit for me! As well, once Nvidia gets the streaming to TV working, I can leave my big PC rig in my office while still being able to play my games on the nice HDTV in the living room, using this as the controller. I could not ask for it to be easier, especially with Steam's lovely new Big Picture mode.
Lastly...emulators. Lots and lots of emulators. Nvidia's Tegra 4 seems to be one powerful chip, certainly powerful enough to run all of the emulators on the play store. This will be perfect for SNES/NES/PSX/N64 emulation on my tv..
I'm interested to hear your guy's opinions! Hopefully we can bring some life to this board over the coming months.

I think the Nvidia Shield is a very good idea, as long as you fit within it’s very, very narrow niche targets. Most people won’t, which is why I think it will sell in low numbers despite being some decent hardware. I think I will be buying one though. I’ll explain.
I fit into one of the very few practical uses for this device. I have a high-end (for now) gaming PC with a GTX670 installed. This gaming PC is in my front room, behind my TV. It is there because my PC room became a nursery when I became a dad in 2011. There is no other room in my stupid tiny house for a PC desk. It has to be behind the TV.
To compound matters, I foolishly went and signed up for TiVo. (Freeview reception is woeful in my area). Now my wife has a hard drive chock full of hour after hour of mindless tat (I hate TV. 99% of it bores me silly) which I end up having to watch most nights. It’s driving me mad. I’m frequently sat there just waiting for her to p*ss off to bed so I can start my evening and bleed off the frustration built up from watching 4 hours of sh*te. This is typically around 11pm, by which time, any of my friends on Steam have also gone to bed.
(Apparently this TV consists of “quality time together” in her mind. When I asked her if she would like watching 4 hours of gaming each night and have to wait until 11pm so she could watch her recordings, she thinks this would be unfair and selfish. But I never have to raise a finger around the house and she brings me cold beer so it’s swings and roundabouts I suppose.)
When I read about Shield it seemed to answer the problem. I would be able to sit on the sofa, next to my wife, (quality time) and play on my PC titles whilst she absorbs hours of Celebrity Pets On Ice Makeover Factor. Whilst I am a little unconvinced that I’ll be able to play games like Planetside 2 on a 5” screen, at least I will have the option to play smaller scale stuff like Skyrim or Sim City. Games I can easily pause when she has something to say!
As I already have a nice setup for my keyboard and mouse and headset already able to reach my sofa, all I really needed was the small, portable screen. I thought I could make my own solution for a lot less than the Shield is likely to cost, and get a slightly larger screen. I was wrong. All small 7” to 10” screens were unsuitable for one or all of the following reasons;
1. USB input only, meaning my CPU would be driving the display, not my GPU. Also possible latency issues depending on drivers.
2. Awful resolution. They can all support up to 1080p inputs, but natively they are rarely above 480.
3. Terrible response times. They seem to be ok for desktop computing or widget monitors, but high speed gaming would be motion-blur city.
4. Cost. The only small, portable, high resolution LCD/LED displays with HDMI input and decent response times were for high-end professional photography DSLR camera rigs, costing around £1200.
Anyone with their own computer desk won’t need an Nvidia Shield. Anyone who wants an Android gaming experience can already do so for £30 with an Android device they already own and a PS3 or Xbox360 controller (http://buy.thegameklip.com/) and won’t need an Nvidia Shield. Anyone who wants the hand-held PC gaming experience and doesn't already have at least GTX650, is looking at a starting cost of an additional £200 on top of the eventual cost of the Shield. How many people are going to go for that?
If I could have found a separate small screen that would have been up to spec, I wouldn’t be looking at a Shield either. I’ll be amazed if Nvidia shift many of these upon release. If they cost it much above £250 I’m going to have a hard time justifying it myself.
I am looking forward to being able to lie in bed and play Sim City before going to sleep. There are plenty of Android apps (I use Unified Remote) that can remotely shut down/hibernate your PC over network. I suspect the Nvidia Shield (if they’ve though this through) will also have this though.
I am not getting one but I hope it does well... here's why:
I bought a Moga Pro (which has not arrived yet as their free shipping is the slowest domestic service I've ever experienced). With the controller combined with the LGOG (and it's Tegra 4/Snapdragon 800 based replacement this fall), I expect it to match most of the Project Shield functionality.
I own a high end phone (LG OG + 64gb card) and a high end tablet (Nexus 10 32). To the extent I want a 3rd piece of portable electronics, It would need to do something that the LGOG/Nexus 10 can not do or play a game my devices cannot play. I'd sooner get a 3DS XL for the exposure to a unique gaming library.
The PC gaming has zero value to me (I have a modern laptop (Vaio i7 14" touch screen) but it's graphics are by ATI. There's no way I would get a bulkier laptop (for the 660 graphics) to stream to a more portable.
On the other hand, I hope it succeeds. The better shield does, the better the games android will recieve. I don't particularly like tegra exclusives (expecially since Chainfire's mod doesn't support JB) but most likely my next phone or tablet will have the Tegra 4
one simple reason why not.. thats because i don't own a nvidia GPU. im currently using AMD and don't plan on changing to nvidia anytime soon. from what i understand you can't use the project shield to stream games from PC without having a decent nvidia GPU
I will not be getting it either for the simple reason like stated above have an AMD card. This card is very capable of running games like this to a little device such as the Shield but they will never do it. Given I just bought my rig with some killer specs I am not willing to pay another 300 dollars for a nvidia card ton a system I already spent over 1000 on just to see the same performance out of the card. Its pretty pointless to me plus the precision you have with a mouse is far better then joysticks.
I'm still on the fence. If it's under $200 I'll definitely consider it. I'm basically looking at it as a higher quality alternative to something like the JXD S5300. I want it primarily for emulators, but also some Android games that I think would work well with a controller. If the JXD S5800 actually comes out and doesn't have any major issues I'll probably go with that, as I think that the layout (PS Vita like) would work better for games that still need some help from the touch screen.
I won't get it as it's the first time a device like this is being made, and there'll be unpredictable problems with the device. Sitting on the fence, and I'll be waiting for shield 2. Also, because I'm in no hurry.
One more reason is that I have gtx 560 ti and not 660.

Def getting one here, I think it's a novel concept and I applaud Nvidia (and any other company) for trying to make a product that is unique. I do have a drawer full of "unique devices" though so it will really be up to Nvidia to stick by the device to make it successful. It is for sure priced at a premium and I believe that will be a barrier for many but, if you are a real hard core PC gamer you are used to spending pretty big bucks for a fast setup so from that perspective the price might be ok.
I pre-ordered one because it has physical buttons. I've been using an Asus Transformer Infinity tablet with a PS3 controller to play emulators when I'm bored at work. Not very Ideal. This morning I sold the infinity on craigslist, took the cash over to gamestop and pre-ordered a shield.

My chair is as comfortable as the couch :/ so I see no reason to stream. (Also, I use ATI cards as Nvidia ones are overpriced over performance. "But ye, I don't have to bull**** about drivers and it just works" - You know what kind of people have that argument as well? People that buy apple)
- It's not even out yet, and pre-ordering is just insanely stupid. You're laying down money for a product that is not even tested, and you're purchasing it for the highest price possible, as products only get cheaper over time. I will even go as far as simply declaring people that pre-order products, may it be games or actual products are extremely retarded.

Wow, that's a pretty large set of arrogant statements with no good backing. Why do you have an ATI card? If you stuck with a Trident card for longer, the price on that ATI card would come down even more! Calling people who preorder "extremely retarded" only means you're completely removed from rational discussion. I pre-order games if I don't want to have to worry about them on launch day. I pre-order hardware that may be hard to get on launch day (or shortly after). Maybe the real problem is that you can't afford to pre-order products, and you're jealous of people who can? Maybe you're happy with older technology until the dust has settled? Those are good reasons to claim you're not going to pre-order a product. A) price is already up. There is no price to expect when it has already been announced.

C) It doesn't just dream, its a fully fledged android device and very capable of playing games offline, there are quite a few good games coming out on android now.
I want go get shield but its not up for pre order in the UK yet, looks to be around the £230 mark if you do a straight price conversion although if you follow existing trends they will charge £300 or more in the UK because everyone hates us and charges us more for no reason. I can't afford the £230 price tag right now, let alone if it does get a price bump.
If I get one it will likely get loaded with emulators and then it might make an interesting device to make apps for. I couldn't care less about streaming. I just see it as what the PS Vita should have been, a high end android device with a gamepad (yes it is my opinion that the vita would have been much better if it was an android device).

The US prices are released, not any international ones. With the current rate, it should come down at €270. Hell no, it will get that tag in Europe. It could go as far as €300 to €400. That's still a huge difference.
And yes, I would go as far as claiming that pre-ordering products is an extremely retarded action. Why would you pay the royal jackpot for a product, that has no one ever reviewed yet, that no one ever put to day-to-day use and could report how it functions. You pay that royal jackpot for a mere idea or concept, led by marketing and manufacturers claims. I cannot see how this could be a good decision in any daylight.

Why would that claim be untrue? I see no valid reason why you would not be retarded if you just believe a manufacturer by the nice blue colour of their eyes. I see no ignorance from my side, only those of who pre-order stuff. I see no cry-baby mentality in that statement, only from you who are quite tense in defending your purchase.
It's alright though, it's your purchase, your good decision to do so, and I do not say you can't do that. You're just not that sane in my opinion, just as you think negatively about me. I see you are quite tense. Don't get pushed that much by someone on the internet.
See, I know a lot more about the product than you. I've been playing with it for months. My decision to pre-order has nothing to do with marketing or hype. I choose to pre-order the product based on solid facts, hands on testing, specific knowledge of the features, and specific plans of what I intend to do with it. When I pre-order software, it is generally after either beta testing it or careful homework on the software in question with the knowledge that my friends and I will be playing it on release day together. Since I live in the US, I know the price, and I know whether it will be coming down any time soon. And they aren't allowed to charge me until they ship, so it's not profit to them yet either, I can cancel at any time.
I pay a premium to remain on cutting edge technology, and because of it, I have done well in my career. I owe my current position on getting involved with Android earlier than most people, and diving into the technical aspects of it. That's what I do.
So you can think of me as retarded all you want. I'm thinking you're just too lazy to be an informed buyer until after everyone else already has it.

LOL! you are right. I was tired when I wrote that. I built the desktop not the Nvidia card
I will definitely be buying one as well. I have already pre ordered the shield. Some of the features that I like are obviously streaming PC games to the device so I can play them while sitting on my couch or in another room. I also like the shield for the controls so I can play games like Shadowgun, modern combat and other games like those. I also like that I can also use it just like any other Android device.
The speakers are here are incredible and it was shown that you can actually play music and use as a speaker alone which I think is a neat idea as well. Lastly I think a lot of developers are going to be making some pretty awesome games for this device and this device especially has endless possibilities.
I already have a set up that will provide a great experience for streaming PC games so don't need to buy anything extra for it to work right out of the box. I currently use Moga pro to play games on my Nexus 10, but it is a pain to carry around both devices for this to happen.

I`ve pre-ordered mine on May 16, 2013 for a fun reasons like to help developers in test with custom recoveries, kernels, systems or such things. I hope there is going to be guys who willing to develope for this thing something because it got some good potential.

Recovery looks like it will lack touch for a while, but developing ROMs for it shouldn't be overly difficult.
