VOIP calling and receiving - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys.
I have a Google Voice account and a SIP number from Simonics.
What app would be good to install so that I may send and receive phone calls through a WiFi network?
Thanks ahead.

I found exactly what I needed.
CSipSimple.
What a great app.
All the features I was hoping for and the sound quality is just perfect.
If anyone has a Google Voice account, I can write up a quick tutorial on how to send and receive free phone calls using Google Voice and a free SIP number from Simonics.

While you can do this with SIP, you can also use apps like Groove IP Lite, talkatone, etc.
Don't know if you knew that already or not.

Yeah, I tried Groove IP a couple of days ago, but the audio would cut out for 2 to 4 seconds constantly.
I definitely recommend CSipSimple.
To me, it's perfect.

Yeah I've actually had problems with groove ip too, so I recently switched to talkatone, it is more reliable (never had ppl not be able to hear me where I'd have that problem with groove ip).
But it's not the best quality. I used to have a sip account a long time ago but the service I had shut down. I may try another sip account and see if it's better.
edit: I checked out Simonics, but I was weary of giving them my main password, so I used one of my spare gmail accounts to make a new GV #. On top of that, my dialer has native SIP support, so I put in my account details and it is integrated! seems to use about a MB/minute.

The guy from Simonics is extremely cool and quite friendly and helpful.
I'm not sure why he is still providing free SIP numbers for the past two years but he's pretty awesome to me.
I think I've only gotten two emails from him and they were actually quite informative, so I don't think you need to worry at all about trusting his site with your account details.

[devs needed] FREE phone calls from Google

As some of you know, you can now place FREE calls to anywhere in the US or Canada using GMail and the "voice and video chat plugin". You can also receive calls from within GMail if you have a GoogleVoice account and you set it up to forward GoogleVoice calls to "Google Chat" as well as your phone(s).
This is awesome! I can now answer calls from GMail instead of my phone. I wish the desktop GoogleTalk app did that so I wouldn't have to always keep a webbrowser page open to GMail, but that is not what this post is about...
I got to thinking: if GMail can place and receive free phone calls, why can't I do that on my phone (or any device with internet)? I downloaded every available webbrowser for Android and tried to surf to GMail, but none of them even loaded the page (???), much less the plugin.
While searching for any possible solution, I learned that the required "voice and video chat plugin" is available for Linux. This fact makes me almost positive that it is somehow possible for someone to develop an Android app that loads that plugin, logs in to GMail (spoofing a desktop browser), and displays the Pop-out dial pad capable of placing and receiving free calls!
Is anyone up to the challenge? This is huge people! FREE phone where ever there is internet. I hope someone can make this happen on Android devices, since it already works perfect on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
EDIT: Lots of info in the SIPdroid thread I found after posting this, but it still would be nice to just make an XMPPdroid app and not have to deal with connecting Jabber to SIP. If my linux PC can make free Google VOIP calls without setting up additional SIP and PBXes accounts, then my Android phone should be able to too.
Great idea! Im sure others are working on it. Im all for free calling wherever there is internet. Not sure if the cell phone carriers ate gonna like it.

I've thought the same, currently I'm using SipDroid>pbxes>sipsorcery>sipgate>GV. Anything a bit simpler would be great. Plus when i try to hook up a friend, at least one of those sites aren't open to the public;gizmo is a simpler setup, hasnt been open since google bought it and has been sitting on it ever since. If I find anything I'll post here
this would be really nice. cell carriers are already ripping us off unnecessarily. this would give us some ways out
PBXes added support for the gtalk trunk recently and their latest sipdroid application can even set that all up for you today. In the end you'll have sipdroid->pbxes->gtalk with direct dialing.
I've been using it for a week or so now and it works better than any other solution I've tried, except for a sipdroid/android bug where a bluetooth disconnect causes the phone to reboot.

Multiple Google Voice accounts?

so basically i want to use two google voice accounts to text from on my phone. I've tried editing the .apk but the recompiled apk force closes. Can anyone help me try to get this to work? Anytips? I'm just trying to basically install the same app twice and have it use diff. db files.

I'd be very interested in that as well.

You'd have to do more than installing it twice. It would have to be re-written.
Well yeah I know that. You can't install the same app twice with out modifications to it. Then It would have to use a diff.Db for the account info. This is my first time messing with an apk so I have no idea how to make this work

How do you make it not? I tried using Google Voice, but it did it automatically and it took forever to revert.

Titanium Backup (paid version only maybe?) has profiles to load different user data files for an app. You'd have to switch back and forth though. It would probably be easiest to try keeping a web browser logged into Google Voice your second account, setting the user agent to a desktop.
Or just use a second browser app only for this. You won't get instant notifications of incoming texts, but that's about all you can do for now. I don't see Google adding anything like this to the service, honestly.

i think the idea is to have the instant notifications. I too have been looking for a solution to this problem for some time. i use multiple voice lines for work, one for hiring/recruiting and one for customers that i tell them is my "personal cell"
i thought the best solution would be to have two voice apks installed but i'm not finding a way to do that.

Couldn't you just set up the separate account to forward to your phone account? You could also go into your GMail settings and set filters to forward all notifications to one account as well.
This would be much easier than hacking the apk...am I wrong?

Phone number stolen

Hi!
In the past few days, several people have called me claiming I've been texting them about their items on craigslist. I haven't been texting, and the people calling me are from states in the mid-west. It appears that someone took my number and added it to their Google Voice account. When these craigslist people call me, it does the whole, "state your name and we'll try to connect you".
What can I do, aside from getting a new number?
Try to reclaim your number via Google voice
Get (if you don't have one) a Google voice account
Add your number to it
It will say "this number is in use would you like to reclaim it" (or something similar)
Note: the person(s) that had your number added WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL ABOUT THE CHANGE.
You could contact your carrier as well, otherwise this might become a cat and mouse game between you and the other person(s).

I tried adding my number to my Google Voice account, and it gave me the following error:
"This number is already being used on two other Google Voice accounts. Forwarding numbers cannot be shared across more than two accounts."
It didn't give me the option to reclaim it. I have 3 Gmail accounts, and it isn't an any of them.
Thanks!

Try contacting Google directly. You may have to go through the help pages. I have never seen a number be able to be used on TWO Google accounts at once. (I have two google voice accounts, and cannot use one number on both)
I wish I had another solution. Sorry.

[Q] Best Talkatone style app?

I'm using Talkatone and I wanted to know if there are any better alternatives?

Okay...
Talkatone stores your Google password on their servers. I'm not comfortable with that. Not sure if it works with 2-factor authentication and a dedicated app password. Otherwise you could just set up a separate Google Voice account just for use with Talkatone, just in case someone harvests the passwords off their servers.
sipdroid/PBXes does the same thing if you go that route. This is kinda attractive because the native phone dialer supports SIP accounts natively, no need to install and use an extra app.
Meanwhile I'm staying with GrooveIP and Spare Phone. Can't say I'm impressed with their voice quality, but it's good enough.
I've been meaning to also try the Vonage app for free calls but didn't get around to it.
I use Vonage now because it use your real number, but it doesn't take incoming call.
I prefer GrooveIP over Talkatone after the latter cheat me out of some money when I paid for the one time ad removal and couldn't retrieve it afterward on another rom/device using the same account.

It's more like the user chooses to use an app specific password, it's not a choice Talkatone makes. Not too thrilled about these app specific passwords either, I think Google's implementation is flawed, they are not really app specific passwords because you can't say "I will generate an app specific password that can be used for Google Voice only". The pseudo app specific password that you think you generated for Google Voice only can also be used to access your email for example. It's app specific in the sense that only 1 app is supposed to know it (e.g. Talkatone in this case), but if the password leaks from their servers it gives access to more info in your Google Account than Google Voice.
It's better than nothing, but until Google improves it I feel better not using Talkatone and the likes that store passwords on their servers.

[FIX] Yahoo Mail - Could Not Sign In

Hey all,
I was having issues with my Moto X alerting me that it could not sign in to my Yahoo account. However, when I would go into the app, it would function correctly without me logging back in or taking any action. But, the notifications were annoying as it was happening at least once per day.
Anyway, I played around with the account settings and was able to remedy the issue, or so I believe. The fix is pretty darn easy...
- Go into either the mail app itself or go into system settings, click on the Email account, then account settings
- Click on your email address [email protected] to adjust those preferences
- Scroll all the way down and click on Incoming Settings, under the Server heading it should read: Android.imap.yahoo.com
- Remove the "Android." piece of the phrase, so it should now read: imap.yahoo.com
- Click Done
- Repeat these steps under the Outgoing Settings as well and your issue should be resolved
Let me know if this works for you, or if you continue to have issues, thanks.
Fine, good work's it. I am already done it.. thanks
Unfortunately yahoo has been doing this with android for years and no combination of settings will fix the random sign in errors. It can go weeks or even months between episodes for me.

You are right. It really has nothing to do with settings. It's on Yahoo's end not our phones. I ve been getting that sign in error ever since my 1st android phone (Htc hero) so i am used it by now. It comes and goes away.

Interesting. I have always been able to modify the incoming and outgoing settings to remedy the issue. I will let everyone know if this works long term. Thanks for the info.
I am a few days into this correction and have yet to receive any notice from the phone / Yahoo / mail app that I could not be signed into Yahoo. Not waving the flag yet, but for those of you who were having this issue, it may well be a simple and permanent fix.
Hope it works for you, this error happens randomly and intermittently so I just live with it and have transitioned most things to gmail.

Yeah, multiple days into the experiment now and still working as advertised.
After over a month of use, I can now 100% confirm this fix. I have not had any issues since the day I made the change to the settings. So if anyone is still having this issue, please feel free to use the info provided in the first post.
Glad it worked for you, only temporary fix for me. I broke down and installed the Yahoo mail app again. Its gotten much better and does not destroy the battery any more.
