Since none of the current ROM's offer everything I want I decided to return my G2 to the stock ROM and tweak it. So far I'm extremely happy with the results. I basically AOSP'd several key apps along with a few mods (recents key, black bars, de-clutter notification/status bar) The problem I'm having Is that my Call log now doesn't work and I would of course, like it too. here's what I've done and what it netted me.
All the .apks I replaced the LG apps with were sourced from my AOKP'd Galaxy Nexus. Unless other wise noted I also yanked the .odex file. Further, unless noted everything went without issue.
Replaced LGCalculator with Calculator
Replaced LGCalender and LGCalenderProvider with Calender and CalendarProvider
Replaced LGGallery with Galler (this added the AOSP camera as well, LG camera app still intact and functional)
Replaced LGContacts and LG ContactsProvider with Contacts and Contacts provider (This broke Messaging and added the AOSP dialer, also caused constant errors until I wiped cach/data for the replaced contacts app, after which the errors ceased)
Replaced LGUSMms with Mms (this restored Messaging functionality)
Tried to replace LGPhone and LGTelephony provider with Phone and TelephonyProvider but this caused constant errors.
I'm EXTREMELY happy with my "AOSP'd" G2 but the problem I'm having is that now my Call log in the AOSP dialer is completely inoperable, additionally my voicemails (google voice) don't show up there like the would on my GNex. I would like to fix the Call Log not working, I'm assuming it's something to do with the dialer not looking in the right place or being fed the information but I have no idea how to fix it.
Help?
Try swipe dialer from playstore.

I don't want to use swipe dialer, I don't like swipe dialer. I want to use the AOSP dialer I am using and I want the call log to work, I know there is a way to fix this.

ok, i have an evo now, LOVVEE IT, but also looking at picking up an epic and giving evo to gf. but the one biggest thing thats killing me on the epic is not being able to customize the bottom dock, i dont use messaging, i use google voice and would need that at the bottom.
is their any way to change those icons? (WITHOUT USING ANOTHER LAUNCHER, I like the touchwiz UI, and dont wanna use adw or launcherpro etc...)
I heard this feature was removed from the current UI. Apparently there were some problems with touchwiz 3.0, and they removed a few features to get rid of a few of the bugs..
Touchwiz on the epic is essentially stripped down compared to the Vibrant and captivate... although this may change with the 2.2 update..
so it doesnt have ANY way? not even with root? ah. that kills it for me, i dont even touch the messaging app, idk the last time i did...
I'm just curious why not use the messaging app las time i tried google voice it was too slow.
well i have multiple phones and GV is PERFECT for it, and yeah GV used to be HORRIBLE, but now they have push sms, so its pretty instant, and i cant text from my pc etc... the ONLY downside to gv is no mms yet. idk i just REALLY dont want a app on a dock that im never gonna touch..
I love my evo very good, no problems, honestly the draw to the epic for me is the touchwiz fetures, not so much the UI itsself, but the unique features. the speed and the screen.
just not sure if its worth going from an evo to epic
Touchwiz 3.0 does not support landscape thats why they used 2.5. You may be able to change this later on if a developer can port touchwiz 3.0 but then you would not have landscape support in touchwiz.
This is the 4th thread about this exact issue
Solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770529
Just download Handcent. When you hit the messaging icon at the bottom it will ask you if you want to use the stock app or Handcent (then you can check - remember this choice). Now whenever you hit the SMS icon (it will still appear to be the same...). It will open Handcent.

This might work for the other buttons as well, if you clear the defaults in said applications. That is done under the Settings > Applications, find the app and hit the "Clear Defaults" button.
How does using Handcent fix anything for those of us that want the bottom dock button to launch Google Voice?
Did you read the question?
Use launcher pro, u can add and remove icons/programs from the dock

hey guys i am trying to see if i could delete my stock sms on my epic cause i used Handcent and blacklist some msgs and it still shows them on the stock sms and i want to hide them so can someone help...
If you are using LauncherPro you can easily hide apps you don't use. My phone is out of commission right now, so I can't tell you exactly how to use it.

thanks man but i am using touchwiz i like touchwiz so i hope there something outhere
You can't delete the stock sms app or you will lose the ability to do mms. The apps from the market aren't full replacements but more like a skin. If you are running any of the froyo leaks, you can replace the sms application on the dock easily. If you aren't then what you can do is go into settings, applications, all, messaging application and wipe defaults. Next time you get a text or send one, it should ask you which application to use (as long as you have another one already installed). You can't replace the icon, but at least it will launch handcent/chomp/whatever instead.

Im using Handcent and was getting double notifications. I just went to the set-up for stock messaging and disabled notifications. Kind of a band-aid approach but it worked for me.
For sure keep the stock Messenging app.
I removed it completely awhile back, and started getting errors. Picture messages would NOT download/send, and I would get these strange Stock Messenging notifications for texts even though there was NO stock messenging app on the phone.
If anything, hide the messenging app from the drawer, and then you can even try freezing Messenging with Titanium to see if it gives you errors.

I feel like I am missing something here. My phone apk always pulls up my contacts instead of the dialer. Is there a setting to change this? I am on 2.3.5 stock.
Nope. This is what they think we want.
CyanogenMod has options to control it.
Well that is dumb, why have 2 icons (phone and contacts) pull up the same thing?
I knew Cyanogen had controls for it, but I wanted to stay on stock 2.3.5. Is there some other kind of work around or mod to fix this?
Contacts icon always pulls up contacts tab. Phone icon pulls up whatever tab you were on last.

Another launcher like ADW that supports custom activity launches should work.
Plaese post your best dialer and phone with link and photo in the way that is possible to avaulate and decide what we would be installed in our phone.
Thanks everybody

best dialer I've used. The Sammy's one is just crap.
I get a constant complaint from friends new to Android and the SGS II: "I tap the phone icon, but I don't get the dialpad - where is it??"
I guess it's not so intuitive to just scroll the pane at upper part of the screen...
The ICS (CM9 one) is better, but Dialer One is still the one I choose.
Dialer One does not work for me. Although I like the interface better, it takes to long to start. Maybe it is because I have to many contacts in my phone.
I have a stock rom installed (2.3.6)
Anyone else experienced this problem ? I am now back to the stock dialer.
Go Dialer Ex
It has some options that I missed from the Stock dialer such as vibrate on when someone picks up the phone on the other side and Speed dial.
exDialer works very well for me. I used custom one and go contacts too but this is way better.

I have them and I only have the stock dialer.
Settings->Call->Call Alert->Outgoing call vibration
I don't know if those settings only affect the stock dialer or if they are system settings and affect all dialers - I think the latter.
Speed dial:
Dialer->Menu button->Speed dial setting
exDialer takes too long to load call logs and contacts. Went back to stock dialer, fast and functional.
touchwiz rom and slide to call or send messsage is the best
Stock dialler with ICS theme. Maintains functionality of stock but adds the sexiness of ICS
Prefer stock due to left/right swype on contact and SNS integration only for FB to sync contact pics. And has T9 compared to stock CM7 dialler.
Stock dialer for sure (on ICS ). go+ keyboard is a must.
exDialer
I've tried all others, but exDialers is the best one. Fast, stable and highly customizable without any unnecessary garbage ...

I do like the stock 4.3. Its much smoother compared to 4.2.1.
But what I don't like is the default SMS widget that shows up on the locks screen when we receive an SMS.
Same goes for Miss Calls.
The sms is displayed on the screen itself, so basically anybody could read the sms as it arrives (I dont like putting lock).
I know, there is a setting to disable sms display but that will turn off the displaying of the message on notification bar aswell.
So is there any way to turn off that widget ? I couldn't find any yet.
Infact, this whole lock screen widget thing is not so cool because, as per my experience, if I put widgets, the phone takes up a while (1-2 secs) to wake up.

if your on a rooted device, then probably you can freeze that widget using titanium backup or linksd. or on a unrooted phone you can also disable it. settings>apps
Could you point out which one to turn off ?

sorry I dont know which app/process it is because I don't own a Samsung device!
you must try to find it yourselves by just freezing apps/process related to lockscreen one after the other!
hmmm... what r u doing here at the first place?

Had the same question as thread opener. I'd prefer to use dashclock to handle this kind of things, non that Samsung stuff. And, at the same time, I'd like to keep text content readable on notification bar. Is this lock screen notification disposable somehow? I see nothing that could be related to it in settings
Note 2 N7100 - DN3 ROM @240 dpi - MK4
I took the other way to solve this one..
I have actually installed Textra sms client and I have kept the stock Messaging app aswell.
So, now on, the new sms is captured by Textra and displayed on status bar like before. And if I want, I can use stock sms to reply or read, but I prefer textra now. In case you prefer textra, u can actually turn off stock Messaging from App manager and permanently use Textra (or any other sms client) as a replacement.
Just install a 3rd party SMS app and disable notifications in stock app.
Donnt be bothered about RAM when using a powerhouse such as Note 2

I managed to obtain what I needed with rom toolbox pro using its auto run manager function. Make system apps visible, than look for a package named com.sec.android.app.keyguard and disable the first receiver, whose lengthy name ends with "missed widget provider". No more notifications on lock screen taking the place of my widgets (namely dashclock)!
Hope this helps, fell free to ask for clarifications if needed. No side effects noted until now, but I seldom receive text messages since WhatsApp has been invented, so it hasn't been tested much. Cheers!

it's more simple now
Search : Disable Samsung Notification Widget APK* on google, then click on the first link.
It's a mod for xposed installer, for rooted device. This mod remove totally the new message widget and missed call widget of the lockscreen.
Here is that xposed module

Can someone provide me note 2's kitkat lockscreen widgets for the messaging app and dialer only?
I need them badly and don't want to download the whole firmware for just 2 files.
