USB 3.0 mode forces Airplane Mode? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The t-mobile version doesn't force this... or is there a setting i'm missing?

You're not missing anything. That's how the VZW version is designed to work.

Yea, I saw this as well last night and was going to post about it but never got around to it. So are they saying that the USB3.0 port will only transfer at 2.0 speeds unless that option is ticked off and the phone goes into airplane mode?

Anybody know the answer here.... ?

Tethering built into 2.1 RUU for the Sprint Hero has

Hey guys I rarely, if ever, post anything, but I made a discovery yesterday that I just tested and wanted to let everyone in on it. I have the **Leaked** but now **Official** "RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release" installed on my phone. My phone had not been rooted and I decided to upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 yesterday (just couldn't get myself to pull the trigger sooner). While I molesting the new features I went to mount the phone as a disk drive and noticed there were some additional options. Once you plug in the USB into the phone, access the pull-down menu from the status bar and press "Charge Only". You will be greeted with another menu that, among other things, has an option for "Internet Sharing" select this and the phone will install some software on your computer. After that your computer will be able to utilize your phone as a modem. Now I haven't tried this over just a 3G connection as I live out in the country and my service is terrrrrible out here, but what I was able to confirm is that this works over WiFi with no problems. I turned off the Wifi card on my laptop and enabled the Wifi on the phone. A few moments later I got the connection indicator on my laptop (Windows Vista) and away we go. I posted this using the connection. Can anyone confirm this works over 3G?
Screen shots posted below. (Sorry about the blurry pics, I don't have the steadiest hands)
did you update with the RUU?
FYI, this is not "wifi" tethering, it's "wired" tethering.
good to know internet sharing was in the final!
If I understand your question correctly, yeah I updated with the RUU but I wasn't really interested in rooting the phone.
Yes it works, but you need to change your PRI

In other words, no it does not work if you ran the RUU. You would have to be rooted, flash an Eris based ROM, and then update using the SprintUpdate2.zip Damageless posted.

Aside from "Flashing an Eris ROM breaks your PRI" he wouldn't find much. Sometimes you just gotta let it slide and lend a hand.
Are you guys talking about the same thing he is? He said he ran the RUU and is not rooted. He said he doesn't get good 3g where he lives but what he did was turn off wifi on his laptop and enable it on the phone. He enabled internet sharing and it shared his internet connection with the laptop.
This isn't wifi tethering like we usually describe it, but he is describing a different situation than the one you guys are talking about. Unless I missed something in the posts.

He was asking if it would work over 3G, as well as wifi.

You're both right and wrong.
I was assuming that he rooted his phone before updating to 2.1, thought he just made a mistake by adding the ruu part.
And he was asking about 3g tethering since he could do it over wifi.
To answer his question: You cannot tether that way if you ran the official RUU...that is until an exploit is found and you root your phone.
PDAnet will still work for you though
He probably has one of the few Sprint PRI's that allows MNS....bastage.....
Thanks guys, I'll take my laptop to work tomorrow and give it a try with and without PDANet. Thanks for all of the feedback.
What is you PRI number?
Pri version: 2.20_003
I have the same PRI number. How did you get the network sharing to work? Did you download any software?
yeah we need to find out if this new PRI will allow wired tethering, but I don't want to lose root
we need a few people (read: guinea pigs) to test it out
Ok, I got the network sharing via wired tether to work with WIFI. Now if I can get it to work on 3g.
Edit:
I tried to use the 3g network and it will not allow you to wire tether. It will keep popping up error 67 which "Data Call Failure". Boo.
I'm currently trying to figure out where exactly the PRI is stored in a ROM, so I can make update.zip's of different PRI's, to allow tethering.

I've been digging through for a while now, off and on, trying to find this myself. I PM'd flipz and asked, but haven't received a response, but i'm sure he knows how/if this could be done. I'm very interested if you do find something out, let me know!

The hero has always been able to share wifi using the usb tether. The 3G sharing will be disabled for you as always. Sorry to burst your bubble this is not something new. In fact, way back before we had root you could use a trick to tether the 3G over usb by turning off mobile network and then enabling the MNS while turning the mobile network back on. It was just a bug that someone found to bypass the 3G sharing lockout. After we got root no one really needed that trick anymore.

[Q] Weird wifi tether error

So I got this crazy error while trying to get wifi tether to work on SRF 1.1.0. i was using version 3.0pre12 in ad-hoc mode. Anyone have any idea what this error means? I have been able to make it happen twice now.
Edit: Sorry, this should have been in Q and A. Can it please be moved. Thx.

In case anyone is interested I wrote to the developer and got this response:
Hi!
First I have to say that I don't own a Epic 4G (I'm from Europe and
such a device - or similiar - is not available here). So, it's quite
hard to debug such stuff.
Well. You get the "what the hell"-error because the phone tries to
start wifi. "Wifi Tether" uses the wifi-interface (of course) in a way
which is not recognized (it's not done via the official
android-framework - that's why it requires root-permissions) by the
phone. So, the phone "thinks" the wifi-interface is currently not in
use. If now another app enables wifi (geolocating for instance) the
message will be displayed! One app which I know is doing such stuff is
"shop savvy" but others might do the same.
Regarding infrastructure ... the phone reboots if you start tethering
when you have 4G ... correct?
Thanks,
Harry

Connected as an installer message

is there a way to turn the "Connected as an installer" message off? i just want it to connect to MTP right away without having to wait 30 seconds first. is there some verizon bloatware that i have to disable to get rid of this?
Under PC Connection in settings uncheck the Ask Upon Connecting box. It will default to whatever you have selected without asking

tried that already. doesn't work. its not the fact that it asks me to choose but the fact that it goes into "Installer" mode, before going into the preconfigured setting, which is MTP. it'll bring up a drive with some install files for LG drivers and VZ software. if i wait about 30 seconds, it goes away on its own and proceeds to connect as MTP.
That's strange mine seems to go directly into whatever I had selected before.

are you on Verizon and are you rooted? did you remove a lot of bloatware?

It happened to me today. I simply switched to another mode before switching back. Not really an extra step because I always check to make sure anyways.

I have this problem. The phone (Verizon G2) always connects as an installer first, and then if I go to the USB connection options, it'll fall back to whatever I specify in the preferences. This "feature" is what caused me to lose data when my screen died. Because I couldn't interact with the phone, I couldn't switch it to a mode where I could get data off of it.

[Help Confirm] (5.1) How to: Use Verizon Moto E (2015) on ANY GSM network without ADB

Here are my steps to switch bands without adb, sharing since I've gotten 2 confirmations it works on other phones:
Switch Sims
switch to settings -> cellular networks
Pull down notifications-> Airplane mode ON
Network App -> GSM / LTE (close app)
switch to settings
verify 4g (I always click on it, still shows CDMA)
NEtwrok app -> Turn on Radio
Settings -> click on CDMA -> Select 4G
Airplane Mode OFF
I was a little skeptical when I first read your instruction but this actually works for me as well. Note the trick is to get into the settings ->cellular networks before turning on airplane mode (you can't get into this setting with airplane mode on) then switching back and forth between the network app that was used on the 5.0.2 and the cellular networks.
Exactly, that's what I was trying to say when I put the instruction to turn on airplane mode from the notifications pulldown. I've tried this in two phones so far and it works 100%. Not sure why people in the other thread are still arguing about adb commands and bands reverting and all that stuff...

Did u get LTE out of doing it this way? I have AT&T
I don't have att but I'm pretty sure this does the same as the other method.
This works great...Thanks OP....(for newcomers You MUST download the "Network" (it has a phone icon) from the play store
Tried this as well and works. Even tried it on a phone I reset to factory and its working. Have to repeat the process if the sims are changed but this is a step up in convenience compared to the other method.
Yep, so far this in the only non-adb method that works for me. Some say disabling VZN apks would make it sticky, but I haven't been able to get that to work.
Does anyone know what the network app does to change the radio settings? Can this be scripted? Why is it able to change the setting when calling the shell commands in a terminal emulator on the phone fails.
For some reason this method did not work for me with 5.1. Please post a Play Store link for the exact Network app you are using if it is not this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mangelow.network
. The ADB method worked for me in post #1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/general/how-to-verizon-moto-e-2015-gsm-network-t3098953
That's the one. I'll try to make a video or something since my steps are not described in the best way. So far from the comments people have been able to somewhat fill the gaps in my explanations

Didn't work for me.
Sorry I don't have the phone with me yet. What does the following step mean?
"switch to settings -> cellular networks"
Is it the same step as the following described in the other thread:
Open up the settings app, go to the mobile networks panel, select "Prefered Network Mode" and change it to "4G"
Thanks!
It means to go to the settings pane "Cellular Networks" no need to do anything there yet, but that option will be disabled once you turn Airplane mode on, so you need to be in that section before that so you can use the task switcher to get there later.

Why can't you just go there again later using Settings->Cellular Networks if there's not need to do anything there now? Yeah, a video would be useful for me. People posting here should specify there OS version: e.g. 5.1 . I know it's in the title, but you don't know what's on people phones.

Once you activate Airplane Mode, the Cellular Networks option will be disabled.. so you need to keep it active so you can switch to it later. Couple of people in the thread and offline have confirmed this working in 5.1, but yeah it would help if all people with working steps posted their version. Is there a screen capture app that is free?

Volume up + power (at the same time) for screenshot. Do you mean video screen capture? --> https://play.google.com/store/search?q=video capture screen
I've never tried any.
I forgot to pull out the Verizon sim card that came with the phone before performing the unlock steps. Did I ruin the unlock process? If so, can I still unlock the phone somehow?
Also I tried to search 'network' in Google Play, it kept crashing. Why is this?
Thanks!

That's strange, the only thing I can think of is if Wi-Fi calling is turned off it wont show.
The same menu appears in Huawei Phones too, i would have thought it's an Android not OneUI2 setting.
I wonder if you try a search in settings for mobile network preferred?

Does your carrier support Wi-Fi calling, its possible that either Its not enabled on your account or its not yet supported. That's probably why nothing is showing? I could be wrong though.
Try looking in the phone app/3 dots/settings. That's where I find the wi-fi calling option
