[Q] Fix Non-functional Home Button - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently flashed BeanStalk ROM but have a problem with the Home Button not working. It simply does nothing... like i'm not even pressing it. The physical image of the button is on the screen and the button does respond to my touch, the circle shows up around the button when i touch it but the function does nothing... Maybe the command for the button is messed up or the digitizer commmand has it outside of the touchable area or some other programing type problem. The Home Button does work on all 4.2.2 ROMs.
I've also flashed other 4.3 AOSP ROMs that have the same problem. I've flashed so many that I don't remember which ones have this problem. I can, however, tell you that SlimRoms and LiquidSmooth and Pac-Man(among others that I also forget) do NOT have the problem.
I was wondering if anyone has a solution, suggestions for fix, or maybe some directions on how I can change the code by editing .txt files if that's even possible. I'm not a programmer but I can follow directions and am willing to try any and all suggestions no matter how complex or simple including programing as long as there are directions or links to directions.
I've tried different launchers which I believe have nothing to do with the navigation buttons,
I've tried changing the home button function to a different position in the navigation bar. Ive tried setting the home command to long press.
Same problem with pie.
I've searched the internet and read and/or tried everything I could find on this subject, I've also reworded the question a million different ways and tried anything I could find.

Software buttons working in Java apps

Hi,
I'm having a problem with Java apps and I did not find a solution for it for 2 weeks now so I decided to try experts help.
I wanna play some Java games but none of them seem to recognize the software buttons that are as you know located on the touch screen. I think Java apps do not realize that there's a touchscreen at all. I tried apps like AEBButtons (or something) to remap other hardware key but none seemed to work Is there a solution?
I'm using JBed 20080222.3.1
Please help.
I think you have to use AE Button Plus or go to button icon under settings to map the left and right softkeys. Those are the buttons shown on screen but cant be used by Jbed.
Hope that helps.
Yeah !! This works but I can define only one button there (camera button). Is there a way to add more buttons, like D-pad directions as you've said ??
I actually ended up using the volume up and down buttons as the left and right softkeys through AEBPlus. But There are options for long press button actions and other things so its just finding which button suits you best. BTW, I tried adding actions to the D pad but never managed it using AEBPlus (it didt recognise it when i pressed it).

I'm using the desire build 5.7 with cotulla's new zimage.
i've searched High and low to see if someone has posted it already and couldn't find a solution.
I have had a similar issue with trying to use android.
I have a euro hd2 with 2_12_50_02_2, using chucky gtx rom, installed following task 29.
The rom seems to work well in windows with the problem of non-functioning hard key buttons in the WINMO also. It seems impossible to assign functions to the hard keys via the windows settings - only the send key option is displayed. The send key (green) button works fine for bringing up the dial pad and the end key (red) works fine also. The start button appropriately brings up the windows menu in this rom, though i have noticed that it does not work on other roms. Currently my home key and back key do not appear to do anything in the WINMO under chucky gtx rom!!
This presents no problems in WINMO as htc sense is easily navigated use touchscreen only and to be honest i never even touch the hard keys. However, this presents a massive problem in ANDROID - the android becomes impossible to navigate as I cannot ever go back or use the home key to get to the main screen. This is the same in sense or launcher mode.
I am using a clean fat 32 4gb class 2 micro sd, desire build v 5.7 from gamesquare and tried all the latest zimage files from cotulla and others but always the same problem. the send key is working fine but then i cannot get out of the dial pad. pressing the end key puts the sense in lock and screen off and i can long press this to power down but if i unlock then i am just stuck at dialpad or where ever i was when i locked. the windows key seems to bring up context menu fine and long press brings up key board in android. The home button does seem to wake from sleep sometimes i think, back button does not seem to work at all.
I have tried changing the rootcfs as well but this did not do anything. I had the same problem on FROYO build so im guessing it might not be an android problem. I am using JMZ dual boot on new rom installs without any other programs on windows or anything else other than android on the microsd.
I have not tried any stock roms to see if they solve the button issue in WINMO but cant really understand why they dont work so well in ANDROID or are they linked as android is ontop of windows?
Ihave found a workaround by installing "soft home key" app from market place which is helpful. but still looking for a fix. All very frustrating!!!
Searched everywhere on xda for answers to no avail. even googling for days!!!
PLEASE HELP. I think im not alone if above post is anything to go by
seem to have the same problem myself.
a short press of the windows button goes home, a long press brings up the recent apps; not the menu.
same issue here
i looked at the files located under /system/usr/keylayout and they all indicated that the correct functions were assigned to the correct keys
anyone else have any ideas?
Just remove the Android file from SD, then reload. Done. These builds are not complete yet. Crap is bound to go wrong.
i think the word we are looking for ..is.........beta
can be closed
I had the same problem...The home button on my rooted Nook Color stopped working. I finally stumbled on the answer. I double clicked the home button and it brought up settings. The home button was set to softkeys instead of home. Just change it and it works again.

Button Remapping on the HD2

I have the TMOUSA HD2 (latest stock ROM), but I assume this question would apply for all HD2s.
I have an app called Doublelauncher, that I bought years ago, that can remap hardware keys to different functions depending on single press, double press, triple press, press and hold, double press and hold.
The HD2 doesn't have many hardware buttons. The WinMo button app only shows one that can be configured--press and hold the green key. (Default of that to Voice Command. I would like to keep it with that function.)
In fact, I would like to keep all the default functions of the few keys on the device, just add more possibilities via long press, double and triple press, etc.
Doublelauncher doesn't work at all on the HD2. It installs, the app starts, but shows absolutely no keys that can be mapped.
I've read here on XDA about AE Button Plus, that it can remap anything, including the double and triple functions, long plus, etc. I downloaded the newest version, and installed it in main memory.
Extremely difficult to figure out how to use it, with no help file, no directions at all from the developer, not on his web site either. (Does anyone know of a good online guide or tutorial for this app?) However, I thought I finally figured it out (to some extent), and mapped different functions to the back key, for double press, triple press, and press and hold. I rebooted the machine after saving, tried these different presses, and none worked at all. The back key still only did back, no matter how many presses, no matter if I held it.
Other problems I find with AEB. I had installed Duttys Task Manager last night, and did the registry tweak necessary to have its icon on the right end of the task bar. Nice task manager. But AEB seems to keep changing (on reboot) that reg value back to 0, so the task bar icon does not appear.
Furthermore, AEB slows down my system terribly. (That is on the HD2, the fastest WinMo device there is!) Boot time is now incredibly slow, it is ridiculous!
Therefore, I have a couple of questions:
1. Suggestions to make AEB really work, and not cause the problems described above?
2. Has anyone had success with other button remappers on the HD2? Vito Button Mapper? Others?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Remapping scroll functionality

I have a MAPL100 and downscrolling on the trackball has stopped working. It works sometimes, but usually it takes me 4 or 5 flicks to get it to scroll once.
That said, is there a way to remap one of the keys in the bottom right (Camera button, mail button, and inner circle key) to perform as a downscroll? Like a virtual directional pad.
Or remap a volume key?
More thoughts: the inner circle key can be customized via settings to launch a program. Is there a program that does nothing except send a scroll down signal?
Likely not. How hard is it to make one? I've hardly programmed for WM but I know .NET well so if you have any pointers towards such a program I would much appreciate them.
Thanks
Bumping this. I can't scroll down OR left!
Hi, why don't you try to flash a 3VOLUTION SERIES ROM, they have a button configuration functionally which gives you the option to configurate for long press and short press several buttons, otherwise you could try by installing SmartToolKit or AEB Plus button configurator, however in my experience these apps don't work well with stock roms as they can't seem to register the key remapping; unless of course the issue was with the sd certificates, now I couldn't tell as I'm already on the latest 3VOLUTION SERIES ROM.

Anyone use Home2 shortcut w/ lollipop? I cannot seem to get it working properly

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this or not. In Home2 shortcut, If I play w/ the double click duration speed I can sometimes get the home/home and home/back but never home/menu. Even when I do get it to work it is extremely finicky and the timing has to be perfect (It works about 20% of the time). If nobody is having luck w/ home2 does anyone else have a solution or suggestion to map the home button and a sequence of home/back and home/menu to open apps? Even If I need to mess w/ programming somewhat. As I had it on 4.3 I would press home twice to open voice search, home/back to open Waze and home/menu to open Pandora. I have disabled the camera double center button press to ensure that wasn't conflicting also. I tried a few different launchers to see if it would make a difference and I've had zero lucky.
Thanks
Dave
Same here
Having exactly the same issue. I assume it's because the menu button is now the open tabs button. Surely there's a solution...?
perhaps remapping that key but i've gotten over it.
