Differences between Note 3 and S4? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am still not deciding what to get between S4 and Note 3.
Is the +150$ of the note 3 + huge size outweigh for the advantages it has over S4?
Will the lags of s4 be ironed out by TW 4.3 and match note 3 smoothness?
What are the differences and advantages of both phones?

1. 3GB RAM, 4.3 out of the box, 4K video recording (Snapdragon), S Pen.
2. There's still some bugs that can be easily ironed out with a software upgrade. But as I said just now, if TW wants more memory, it can get more from the Note 3 as it has 1.5x that amount on the S4.
3. Bigger screen -> Better MWC functions. Basically you get all S4 features and more add-ons with the S Pen and some spec bumps.

Would you say its worth upgrading to the Note3 if you already own the S4? I have the opportunity to sell the S4 and add $200 and grab a note 3.

Hmm, well I would do it if I were you.
Why? S4 is nearly at the end of its life cycle and S5 would be released in a couple of months. The Note 3 just came out so it still has one year life span, soooo I'd also take that into account.
Before I wondered why ppl bought the Note, but once I went Note, I never looked back.
Plus the added USB3.0 and all the added new functions make the Note 3 a worthy phone.
If it's just adding 200$, sure. But if you're gonna shell out outright pricing then maybe think twice.
This isn't like the iPhone 5 and 5s, there are actual changes to most every aspect of the phone, with the design, software, and hardware, making it a worthy upgrade.

Pointing out that the S4 still has a very long way in it's life cycle, the S3 is still in an active update cycle, and it's a year older than the S4.

Yeah of course, but in the product life cycle, not the development life cycle. If you decide to sell your s4 after the s5 is released, you will get less money than getting rid of it before the s5 comes out. So I was saying, if he sells it now he can get the Note 3 for 200 more, rather than selling it later and adding around 300-400 for the Note 3 instead.

I will definitely go for Note 3. S4 is not really good due to it internal 2GB RAM is not that really enough for all new bundle features did by Samsung.
Beside this, Note 3 (N9005 edition) is better than S4 of:
3GB RAM - enough for all new Samsung features.
S800 instead of S600, this is really something difference in Snapdragon, S600 is not that big different compare with last year S4 Pro, but S800 is different case.
4K Video record and playback support.
The best AMOLED screen so far, it is even better than S4, thanks to it bright display.
More future proof in data access, the LTE is actually LTE-A, but currently everywhere only utilize LTE except Korea.

i skipped S4 to get Note 3 because of all the features listed, plus then some
Note 3 is actually ultra thin, and light weight compared to previous Galaxy line phones
if you put the Note 3 in your front Shirt pocket, your Shirt doesn't sag down to the side due the weight.
my old Note 1 will sag down the Shirt horribly.
So you can't really tell the difference between a Note 3 vs S4 unless you look for the Spen

What about the camera issue in low light?
S4 doesn't have this issue.
Also the Note 3 size can be a problem if you want to:
-Take a photo one handed.
-Put a cover (it will be even bigger and heavier)
-Put your phone in your sports pants or shorts (will fit but will look horrible)
-The size of this thing when you put it on your ear...
I agree the extra brightness of the Note 3 screen is a big plus here for sunlight visibility.
Is it louder than S4 for ringtones?

I don't have the camera issue in low light, I guess I was lucky
- As I have big hands, I usually hold my phone with one hand, with One-hand operation turned OFF.
- I am getting a metal bumper, to make it wider and heavier, but thats why I like big phones, to actually feel the device haha! But in all seriousness, you can opt for no case, or just use a thin case from eBay.
- Easy, don't put it in your sports pants! haha. Fits my pockets well, even in tight jeans (back pocket usually)
- I'm used to the Note when I put it up to my ear, but that's because my hands are big, it looks natural.
The speaker is now facing you, rather than what it is being laid on, isn't that much better?!

Most people delete most of the Samsung crap as soon as they get root, 2GB RAM is enough for most people.
I don't see anything different with Note 3 in terms of speed even when I compare it to Note 2
I don't see any point of 4K recording and playback, it's for future but by then this phone will be old enough to change anyway.
Eating up all the battery.

Nope, when I hold the phone the speaker usually gets blocked. I wish Samsung would only copy good things from Apple. I'd rather the speaker be at the back like the Note 2.

Not everyone remove bloatware.
Also, Note 3 camera seems better base on some review site.
Note 3 design much nicer.
4K record is not gimmick even now, even the GSMArena had mention it get much details than record in 1080P by watching at any device. This is confirm as I test before, those though 4K video must watch at more than 100" 4K TV is way too wrong, check yourself then you know the different, even look inside the phone itself - 5.7" can see the different.
The camera position at bottom is the most correct way speaker shall, rather than put at behind.

Of all reasons you listed, why didn't you just stick with your Note II then?
Also, how can you even block the current speakers when you hold your phone? Do you like to keep it standing vertically on your palm all the time? I find it physically impossible to cover the current speakers with my hand when I use the phone.
Please enlighten us on how you can block the speaker 'usually', when using your phone to call, or text or even watch a movie.
I don't see any logical reasoning behind covering the bottom at ANY time, it's just the most awkward way to hold a phone.
The current speaker layout is MUCH better than the Note II imo, when I sleep, my phone is facing upward and not downward, my alarm is much louder this way because its right near my ear, rather than being muffled on the table.

That's a damn good deal.
My s4 was almost brand new and I only got $350 for it.
I paid the difference of $400.
And the used market here is very competitive.

Wow I would never sell my S4 for a measly $350. I can get roughly $550 for my unlocked S4 here and a brand new phone could get $600.

SM-N9005 is very rare here, and getting a N900 over an S4 9505 is not an option for me.
I get bored easily from the same rom,so I ''need'' roms like liquidsmooth,MIUI,Carbon,PACMAN...
The S4 has it all and bugless,I wonder if the Note 3 will get them too

I don't use any phone for more than a few months, just makes me bored. It wasn't easy to take a picture lol This is how you hold a phone which has almost no bezel and software buttons -apparently my screen is very dirty, didn't notice it without that flash- (you'd hit the capacitive buttons if you put your thumb on the front). How do you hold your phone? I also put my phone in portrait position on my bed while I'm lying, browsing the net and listening to some stuff, thankfully I enabled 180 degree rotating so I can use it upside down.

Well, the point of a Note 3 is to take advantage of the big screen and the S Pen, which is why people usually tend to run TW based ROMs on this device. With an S device, you can just convert it to a Nexus and not lose any functionality.
If you do decide to go for an N900 you get the advantage of having no known KNOX counter in download mode when flashing ROMs. Just import a 9005 from a website or get your friends to get one for you overseas, it's worth it.

Lol, why would you hold your phone like that 'usually'? Is that how you make calls, or check Facebook/Instragram/Twitter/Tapatalk?
You can move your finger a bit closer to the capacitive button without touching it, or you can lip the speaker so it is louder when you play songs out loud or watch videos.

That's the most comfortable way for me. It's not a problem when making calls but it's very annoying when playing games or watching a video. I usually have my bluetooth headphones or my external speakers connected when listening to music.

I dunno, I usually keep that area free of blockade, maybe because I'm used to PSP/PS3 controllers I tend to keep my fingers off those areas when I play a game.
I barely use my speaker to play music, I only use it for Alarms and the rare occasion of showing someone a Youtube video on the street. Listening to music or watching my videos all rely on my BT earbuds.

Nexus 4 or Note 2 and why?

Im currently looking at both and just want to hear pros and cons like signal and any other issues all comments are much appreciated.
I own a Note 2, and just ordered the N4 for my wife, so I cant comment on the N4 yet. However, I believe it boils down to a handful of differences between them. They are both very, very smooth, very fast phones, so take that out of the equation.
1) Bigger vs smaller screen. I like the Note 2's ginormous screen.
2) Touchwiz vs JB as Google intended. I personally dont mind TW, and can always throw Nova on it if I get tired of it.
3) Updates. Samsung will take way longer obviously than Google. If you MUST have the newest right now, its a no brainer.
4) If using TMo, the Note 2 allows for WIFI calling. May be helpful to you.
5) S-Pen. A bit of a novelty, but kind of useful.
You missed the most important point: tablet-class battery. To borrow a car analogy, there's no replacement for displacement.

True, forgot about that. I can abuse the hell out of it and get 4+ screen time. Use it gingerly and approach 8.
I've owned both phones and honestly the Note 2 is great choice if you don't mind touchwiz and the larger size.
Note Pros:
It's gets more than double the battery life of the Nexus 4.
Beautiful, larger screen.
Touchwiz extras (wifi calling, multi-window mode, spen, gestures, etc)
Note Cons:
Slower rom development.
A bit too big to use one handed comfortably.
More expensive.
Bloated.
Nexus Pros:
WAY sexier and feels WAY better in hand.
Better development.
Half the price (unlocked)
No carrier bloat.
Nexus Cons:
Battery life not great compared to the note 2.
Speaker not as good.
The stock android on the N4 is nice and the screen size of the note is awesome. I think im leaning to the Nexus because of the Dev support keeps a phone new. Hows the call quality of both?
i'm in the same boat...i already have the n4 but i'm underwhelmed by it coming from the galaxy nexus. i know with the nexus you get the updates but custom roms like cm10 will come along for the note2. another big advantage for the note2 is the expandable storage. otg doesn't even work for the n4
I prefer the N4 as a PHONE, but as a more media-consumption-driven device, the Note 2 would beat it. The N4 is easier in-pocket and in-hand. The Note 2 would be better for reading, video, content creation.
Obviously, I chose the N4 over a Note 2. I prefer the smaller screen (and it's by no means small IMO), the pure or easily customizable Android (I had a Samsung phone before, TouchWiz can eat it), and the ability to jump to essentially any GSM network.
I have both. Initially i preferred my note 2 but now im used to the n4 screen, i much prefer it. To me, the note 2 screen doesnt seem as crisp as n4 & whilst the note w is fast, the n4 seems alot snappier in everyday use for myself.
Obviously watching youtube etc is great on the note 2 due to the real estate of the screen & i find the s pen relly handy & samsung did a cracking job of touchwiz on this device but ive grown to prefer the n4 as my daily driver & the note 2 is going on ebay this weekend!
Hope it helps.
Arguably the two best phones on the market right now. Its always a personal choice cause we all like different things on our phones but major pros of both phones are:
For nexus 4,
PRICE!!!! Pentaband, pure android, no bloatware and you get updates soon as its available. On top of that development is always great on nexus devices. Also more "portable" than note 2, and better screen. Both perform well without any lag so performance is pretty much even.
For Note 2,
INCREDIBLE BATTERY LIFE! I can't emphasize it enough, it truly is something else, ive never seen a smartphone perform so well in that area. More features, S pen has amazing things like air view, more storage, bigger screen means better for media consumption (movies, games blah blah) but size can be a con for some however when you go purchase the note 2 the size is obvious so there's no excuse to complain about it when its so obvious.
Bottom line is both phones are great, but honestly in a long run, a Nexus ALWAYS has the edge because of the support it gets. If you're like me, that does not matter a bit cause I switch smart phones more often than I go to the movies (and its not a joke ).
The galaxy nexus is still relevant to this day, it just received android 4.2.1 while for example, the galaxy s 2 is slowly becoming a retired phone.

imho the Note is not a phone, I have had the first model just to use it as a digital block notes, and it's cool for that, but please don't think to use it as a phone becouse is heavy and huge, you could use it for some Emergency call, but not as a everyday phone...

I still on the fence on this i had the 1st note and the galaxy nexus both were great. I dont have LTE in my area with AT&T yet so thats not really an issue so can i use the N4 as a dumb phone on at&t.

N4 has a better CPU/GPU and can be operated 1 handed plus it's pure google and has on screen buttons.
but the note 2 has cool touchwhiz features but it's bloated and too big for 1 handed use.
I have an S3, but have considered switching to the N4, I just cant find the motivation though... will the Quad Core give me that much of a real world NOTICEABLE speed difference? and why does the N4 appear to have a yellow tint to its screen? I also worry about potential quality issues.

i believe that is temporary...just the glue drying - will go away in a week or so.
I came from an S3 and couldn't be happier. The phone does feel a bit faster than my S3 did. Battery life is about the same, the S3 might have been a little better. The only thing I miss about the S3 is the SD card slot, but Google music has me covered.

How is the screen size difference? is it real noticeable? and does Netflix, Youtube and videos in general Full Screen?
Is the Yellow Tint really just glue drying? that doesn't make much sense to me.
Between the 2 the Note 2 is easily a better phone. Being a media hog my self I love the huge screen and its beautiful. Also love the design.
Anybody having issues using the N4 on att non-smartphone plan can att tell the difference i really like not having to pay for another smartphone on my family plan.

Note -> s4 (my thoughts)

Hey everyone,
Just putting my thoughts out there.
I recently moved from the Note to the S4.
For 3 reasons:
1- LTE
2- Higher resolution screen
3- Latest Android version
Ill delve into each point.
1- LTE in the UAE is usually about 10 to 18 mpbs whereas HSPA topped out to 7mbps.
At worst LTE, it is still faster than HSPA.
2- I love high resolution and sharp images. I bought the Note because it had a huge screen with excellent resolution and PPI but the S4 beats it.
3- Funnily enough, I got the upgrade to Jellybean on my Note 5 days before I received my S4 LTE. And imediiately I noticed my device had become better in some areas (like smoothness of flow - project butter as they call it) but the menus and navigation within the device itself became laggy. So it was a double edged sword update. Fluidity was better but at the cost of general performance.
I have to say though. I'll still pick up my Note and look at its beautiful huge screen fondly and wish I could use it.
Sure the S4 is slimmer (than the Note and even the S3) and the screen is bigger than the S3 (but smaller than the Note). I know how they achieved this They did what Apple did. Instead of widening the screen, they simply elongated it.
Suffocation anyone? I feel claustrophobic using the Apple 5 and somewhat claustrophobic with the S4.
Sure the S4 is smoother (fluidity) but the device doesn't feel much faster than the Note (in terms of opening apps, switching to apps and so on).
Its nice but not nice enough to move from a Note to an S4 unless you got the funds. Otherwise wait for the Note 3.
For myself, I'll use the S4 till the Note 3 comes out, and if its on par or better, I'll get it and give the S4 to my 3 year old or to wifey or someone.
Therefore I have decided that I will probably get the Note 3 if it has the same performance (LTE + high resolution + high PPI) when it comes out.
Just my thoughts but damn I miss the Note screen size.

I didn't understand what you mean
According to sammobile, the note 3 is gonna use the same design as the s4 including its features and plastic back. So its gonna be like the galaxy mega 6.3 with stylus and improved performance. So if any of you who can't afford a phone with the same or higher than the price of the s4, wait for the mega 5.8 or 6.3 in june/july and just get it. In terms of performance these phones can't handle it due to touchwiz crap. So if there is going to be cm support on any of the 2 phones then ill buy one of them. Here's a review of the Galaxy Mega 5.8 http://www.google.com.sg/url?sa=t&s...GconvWPvA807u9tZw&sig2=k8L14oRtMkOUJxtRiA3TeA and a review of the Galaxy Mega 6.3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-t2UWW_wx8

I meant this is GT-N7000 forum and stop talking about your S4 lol ! :good:
The gt-n7000 forum is pretty dead these days, but its fairly safe to say that those of us left are all waiting on the note 3.
Note 2 is a total joke with its downgraded resolution, s3 was a toy and the s4 while nice, is still not as good as an n7000.

I saw the "unpacked" event of S4!
very nice but I knew that this is the little sister of Note 3
I love the Note series. NOTE 1, 2, 8, 10.1 and waiting for upcoming 3!
I want the S-Pen and not the MEGA phones from Samsung!
And I don't need metal. A metal unibody will be great but I never had any problems with plastic!
I don't care what is outside, I care about what is "inside" a phone!!!

Nowadays phones after the s3 seems to be more vulnerable to cracks and scratches.even though they have the latest gorilla glass. I was from the s3 and was dissapointed after it cracked even though it landed softly on a basketball court. Bought the note and and can't believe its still perfect even though I drop it more than twice with a heavy 5200mah battery. So now I'm also waiting for the note 3 and hopes that it has the 'unbreakable' screen

You are right for sure. My note has fallen on so many kind of surface so many times and its still going strong. Touch wood! It didn't scratch even with 5200mAh battery. I had thought the heavy battery would surely kill the note with a fall. But it didn't!
iv got the note 1 and i love it i also have the s4 and love that also but im waiting on the note 3 coz i know that will be amazing. once u pick up a note u cant use another phone because the screen is to small. i love big screens
That's exactly what I think!
Once you have a Note all other phones are "tiny".
And when you have big hands (like me) the Note is perfect for me!
And when I think about the Note 3 with full HD Display = WOW!

Same. Last time I thought my s3 was too big for my hands but after holding the note for more than a month and picking up my father's s3 I felt that it was really light. Then I hold my sister's s4 and it was effortless to hold. BTW sometimes I laugh when I see people playing games on that puny iPhone. There was once I saw 4 of my friends playing gravity guy on the iPhone. Then they tried the game on my note and it was more comfortable

note3 vs s4, worth the upgrade?

so i know a lot of people are debating getting the note 3, coming from their note 2s, but is anyone else out there considering doing it from their s4?
i like my s4, out of the box theres very little needing to be done. it was the first phone ive owned where custom roms would only mess things up. battery life for days, camera didnt need any hacking, everything ran fast, and looked good. there was an annoying popup turning up volume with headphones, and that was pretty much it. oh yeah and it didnt have a good sound chip like the s3, but the note3 wont either so thats not in the running.
despite being a solid phone, my reason for considering an upgrade is really just to change things up. is anyone thinking of moving to the note3 from the s4?
ill add "Thanks" to anyone giving feedback/input/2¢
note3
better gpu/cpu
more ram
internal memory
possibly s pen features?
s4
screen has better density,, otherwise no other differences?
up in the air
glass type?
probably same LED?
gps?
still pictures?
4k is alright, but what looks better in 1080p? (only thing that matters in 2013)
battery life?
radio?
air gesture? (really ONLY useful for gloves)
I have considered it and for me it's simply a matter of do I need...
1) a bigger screen again and
2) the spen features.
Although tempted by the Note 3 (after a year of the Note and Note 2) I went to the S4 in May. I really miss the spen and larger screen but found the size of the Note devices to be too much of a hassle in/out pocket, etc. But that's just me....I use my S4 (gps) for a lot of outdoor activity (backpacking, running, biking, note taking..ideas, etc.), and the Note 3 size would just make it more difficult to lug around.
My experience w/S4* has been nothing but excellent and it really fits all my needs for a smartphone...although I wish it had an onboard stylus.
So I basically think it's a matter of how you use your smartphones. Currently I'm sporting a S4 combined with Nexus 7. If I did get the N3 I'd get rid of the N7.
No doubt however, when it arrives in the stores i will definitely compare my S4 to the N3 and ponder...can I make it work for me? But the 5", physical size, sensors, etc. of the S4 work great.
*S4: stock, nova. Other than the original Palm pilot, it's the first smartphone I've owned that I haven't jailbreak, rooted, romed, etc. I enjoy the fact that everything works.
I actually will be going from the S4 to the Note 3.
The larger screen size will be nice for the real estate, but it's a slight trade off as I will lose the 1 handed operation I'm used to, and it's the same screen and resolution (diamond Pentile 1080p) as the S4 so you will technically lose some PPI, relevant or not.
For me getting the N3 is largely about the SPen features I'm looking forward to, especially with what I'm working on these days. The bump from 16 to 32GB storage is also welcomed. Also the new radio power management should provide a nice boost and I have little doubt the N3 will last a bunch longer on battery than the S4. USB3 is also a nice plus.
Everything else for me is a wash, Sammy's TW 4.3 will feel the same I'm sure. Yea the 800 will be faster than the 600 but will you see all that in day to day? probably not, but it's more future proof I suppose. Don't care about 4K video, and the camera stills will likely be the same between the two.

Not the same LED. The N3 has more pwoerful LED than the S4.
Both the two variants wont have FM Radio on board.
S4 vs Note3 are pretty much the same device, only in a larger screen.
If I had the S4 I'll probably not get the Note3 unless i wanted a larger screen plus the S-pen
Originally i was going to get the S4 when it was released earlier this year, then i got winds about the Notes3 coming out so I held back, as I wanted all the features from the S4 plus all the feature that the Note3 offers
I'm very glad I waited.
I had this question in mind when I was on s3. I moved to note 2 as it had all features from s3, bigger screen and most of all bigger battery. I am very proud I made that decision so I guess it will be worth to upgrade to note 3 considering the overheating, smearing and poor battery issues of s4.
Sent from the New S Pen
I personally think people buy the Note-series for the wrong reasons. The only reason I owned a N2 (and soon an N3) is because I use S Pen/S Note, inking,, and multiview heavily. Those things require a screen at least as large as the Note's. If I didn't use those things I'd have a SGS4 or one of its competitors because lugging around a phablet isn't always fun. If you have decent size hands one-handed operation is workable but still not ideal.
Ask yourself these questions...
Do I want a larger display? - If yes, from a feature/performance/size perspective the N3's a great choice. If you're not in to S Pen/S Note or inking there are other large screen devices, both available and rumored, to consider that may have larger displays than the N3 or lower prices.
Am I moving to the N3 strictly for performance gains? - The Note-series phones have a lot going on under the hood. 3GB of RAM sounds fantastic but multiview and some of the other S Stuff are going to use a chunk of it. S-800's impressive but other smaller devices including the Nexus 5 and a possible LTE-A S-800 version of the SGS4 will be released with it too. So if you're hunting for performance the N3's a great choice but you may have other smaller-sized choices available soon. If you're going to root and run a non-TW ROM the performance of the N3 without Samsung's "features" should be impressive.
Am I creation/productivity user? - Used for what it's intended, there's nothing that competes with the Note-series. If you aren't currently using a device for creation/productivity but are in a creative line-of-work or do a lot of business communication and time management on your phone it might be worth exploring what the Note's features can provide. I have a Note 10.1 and N2 and would never own a non-Note device again. One man's opinion of course.

Another thing to consider when answering this question is the downside of having a Larger Display, is the size form factor of the phone itself.
Ask you self these questions:
4. How I'm going to carry this phone on a daily basis?
5. How easy/hard would it be for me to access the phone when I need to answer/make a call?
for me I'm still trying to answer #4, I have Notes 1 and it hasn't been easy, I still use my Galaxy S2 more than my Notes 1 because of this reason.
for answer #5 the Samsung Gear, that watch will finally solve my problem I've been having with the Notes 1, yes, i used Bluetooth before, but it wasn't the same, it was really hard to access the phone to look up things as it didn't quite fit in the usual pockets, specially if you are out in Shorts and T-shirts
at least with the Samsung Gear, no I can keep the Note 3 in arm pocket or something, and then use the Gear to do the basic stuff when i'm out biking on Shorts & Tshirt
which in a way solves the conodrum i was having with quesiton #4

It's funny you'd say that. A ton of people were pissed when it was confirmed the N3 was "only" going to have a 5.7" display. I was thrilled because the N2's size is the max I'd go for something whose primary purpose is a phone and the N3's actually smaller.
I think people play with a phablet in a store and think "it'll be fine." In addition to things you mentioned try to use one running through an airport trying to find a connecting gate. Or with only one hand free walking down the street. What seems "fine" in a store or speculatively changes real fast depending on your lifestyle.
I'm going to upgrade from the S4. I actually don't mind the touch wiz that much I just don't think the S4 has enough juice to run it. I love the phone it just gets really hot when I'm playing games and the battery doesn't last me half a day.
Here is my thought process:
Size - S4 is already large so I already had to get used to changing the way I carry my phone
Battery - I can't get half a day out of my S4 in power save mode with features I would use turned off
Screen - I like as much screen size as I can get and I have trouble typing stuff out on smaller phones. I spend a lot of time correcting.
S Pen - This is something I actually really like, some might not care at all about it
RAM - More = better!
Storage - I got the 16GB S4 and didn't realize how little of it would be left. Without installing anything on my phone I'm at 9 GB with some games at 1-2 GB that is not enough space
I'm jumping from the S4 to Note 3. Can't wait!
I'm also ditching the s4 and getting a note 3.
Being a note 2 owner before the s4 I really regret selling my note 2!
I miss the big screen and tons of battery Life.
Also the s-pen makes it worth while for me.
The s4 is a good device but it doesn't fit my needs.
Can't wait till I get my note 3!

I too will be making the change from a S4 to a Note 3. Main reason being the bigger screen and the ability to use the S-Pen. I had a Note 2 and sold that to get the S4. After a while, I just really started missing the bigger screen. Even with the smaller S4, I still found myself using two hands anyways. So for me it's really a "once you go big, you don't go back." Also I was able to sell my S4 for $500. Purchasing the Note 3 off-contract which is really the same as purchasing the phone on contract since it's a $225 difference or so between what I sold my S4 for and what I'm paying for the Note 3.
wow what awesome feedback!
so everyone seems to agree the biggest selling point is the S-Pen! what exactly does the S-Pen do? i thought the airview/air hover was supposed to the s4's version of the S-Pen, but airview and air hover are absolutely 100% useless in every possible way imaginable. all these features do are get in the way if youre trying to actually do something.. im positive everyone turned them off after the first few days.
so what does the S-Pen contribute?
i was hoping being able to hover over an area of a webpage would act the same way hovering a mouse does, where it brings dropdown menus, mouse hover features, toast popups, any java/flash/html5 features, and every other thing an on-screen mouse is used for. however samsung implemented none of this, and closesourced its hover features. theyre only used for gimmicky things like turning pages on the touchwiz launcher if you hold it a certain way.. -___________-"...
soo, S-Pen?? wutitdo?
I'll keep my S4. Having a larger phone would only be a hassle for my pockets. Plus I have small hands. My S4 will be my pick. I don't need a bigger phone...
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 2
I missed the screen real estate going from the Note 2 to my S4. I have been anxiously awaiting the Note 3 to step back up to a good size screen. I don't agree that the S4 didn't need anything done to it, but I'm not a fan of all the bloat Samsung and the carriers include on these great pieces of hardware.
edit - For me the S-Pen is secondary. It just happens to be included in a great specced phone with a large screen. I'd gladly buy an identical model without the Pen.
The s-pen isn't the deciding factor for me, though I don't want to give it up either! (I have the Note 2). I use it every once in a while but not often. For me it's all about the screen size. I am one of those who wanted the N3 to be 6" or perhaps even bigger.
However there have been times when it was a bit larger than comfortable in the pocket - ie especially during sports. This was partly the weight, not the size - with loose trousers and big pockets it's worse. Still doable but not ideal; it's a trade off I am happy to make though. Hopefully the lesser weight of the N3 will mitigate that problem somewhat.
On the other hand I'm not considering other brands with larger phones because I think Samsung brings way more software-wise to the table - lots of new features each model, and the s-pen is perhaps the best example. For me the S4 would be too small after the Note 2.
I'm really looking forward to the upgrade as it appears that almost everything on the phone will be improved. Since I have an extra Att upgrade to use and it will cost effectively nothing, upgrading is a no-brainer. If I had to pay full price though I'd wait.
I think if I were you, I'd figure out which phone was the right size; the one I'd be most comfortable with most of the time. After all, feature wise they're pretty close. Both are great devices. (Sorry for long response...)

One thing I haven't seen people taking about is signal strength.
Maybe it's just me but when I went from the Note to the SGS 3 I noticed a big drop in signal.

There are already two detailed (p)reviews from phonearena and gsmarena. The former stated the new s-pen features and the latter described them comparatively more in-depth.
Links:

So, we got a new pen window to start these fresh new things to enhance the multitasking:
Action Memo
Srapbooker
Screen write
S Finder
These are already been mentioned by knowledgeable and assumption-expert member(s) like @BarryH_GEG earlier in the general threads. Demo'ed in those vids too.
I am using s3 for a li'l over a year and I find s-pen along with these new features (with varying degrees) interesting.
For an S4 (i9500) user it should be exciting to have the exynos variant. Because now the exynos 5420 has HMP support which will never be possible for i9500 s4.
I really don't understand the OP's question
GNote2 owners doubting to upgrade to the Note3 is understandable, however ..
The S4 is a PHONE while the Note3 is a PHABLET, with S-pen capabilities ...the choice is totally personal
Correct me if I'm wrong .....
Edit: Not to mention the fact that somebody already started a thread just like this one a couple of days ago ....what a mess ....

[Q] Note 3 or S5 ?

Hey guys. Tomorrow I am going to buy a new phone and I am deciding between S5 and Note 3. I was going to buy the Note 3 when I just notice that In my countru the price of the Note 3 and S5 is absolutely Identical (32GB Note 3 and 16GB S5). So is the screen on the S5 really better or there isn't a big difference and how is the battery life on the both devices ? Is the Camera on the S5 better in low light or its the same as the note 3 ? Is the Speaker in the S5 better ?

From seeing both at my cellphone carrier's store:
- Note 3 has better speakers, must be because IP67 in S5.
- Screen is better, smaller looks sharper and definitely brighter.
- Can't tell about battery life, haven't had a Note 3 for much time. Reviewers put them in nearly equal terms with slight advantage to the S5 (AnandTech).
- Camera is good, but low light is a weakness... so they most likely are in the same ground. None has OIS.
- Both seem to have poor memory management, Note 3 has 3 GB of RAM though but S5 has newer, faster chipset.
I picked the S5 because of the more recent stock software (Touchwiz in S5 is quite better than the previous iteration IMHO) and the form factor, try them both if possible. The decision is more if you want a phablet or a normal factor.
For latest and 2014 software features and latest hardware go for s5. If u need pen phone and big screen then note 3, but I think note 3 is getting old as it is late 2013 phone. Note 4 is coming with more than s5 soon on September.
So you can wait for it too..

I was going to buy the S5 yesterday but I saw its back and it looks just awful and the phone feels like a cheap Chinese copy of a real samsung phone. The note 3 feels a bit better (the plastic actually feels like leather) and I like its looks a lot better. But then comes the Software and Hardware that is a lot better on the S5. I am really confused right now
I own both. Personally I much, much prefer the Note 3.
First some advice.
If you've got a few months left to wait, wait to see what the Note 4 is going to be. 1st week of September is when it'll be announced, should start selling early october. Also, the S5 Prime with top-specs is expected somewhere in the middle of the year. Wait for that, if you can. The current S5 is a joke.
So...
The camera on the S5 is a little better, it's IP67 and the colours on the screen are prettier. But that's about it.
The Note has a bigger screen. Yes, the S5 had a more saturated screen, but in my opinion bigger is more useful. Particularly for entertainment or multitasking.
The additional 16GB of internal storage is very, very relevant. 4.4.2 breaks moving apps to the SDcard, so you'll need it (unless you root, which breaks KNOX)
More RAM. 2GB vs 3GB. I know there are some who say "You don't need 2GB(It's actually less than that)". You do. The S5 has some horrendous lag, and the memory runs full very, very quickly.
The S5 has a slightly faster CPU (2.3Ghz vs 2.5Ghz), but the RAM is such a bottleneck that you barely notice the increase in speed. I can't for the life of me figure out why they would use only 2GB.
The Spen. Even if you're not a pen user, it comes with some nifty tools. Particularly the Pen Window is very useful, as it enables you to answer messages without switching away from your film or game. The pen also enables you to use your phone when eating, because you don't have to worry about greasy fingers on the screen.
The camera on the Note 3 is rather crap in low light. And I'm putting that nicely. It looks like an oil painting. The S5 has a slightly bigger sensor, making it a little better in low light.
And then there's the design. I can't help it, the S5 looks to me like something you buy as a toy for your 5 year old niece. It just looks so cheap. (particularly the White one..) At least the Note 3 looks like it costs 700 euro(releaseprice)...
Unless you're a fitness buff, I don't see the point of all those health gimmicks. There are functional heartrate apps that use the flashlight on the Note 3 and match the results of an actualy monitor besides it.
I do have to say the S5 is a little better at surviving drops and bumps. It can handle a bit more rough treatment. The Note 3 is fairly fragile by comparison. So if you lead an active lifestyle or are clumsy, and you don't want a case, an S5 might be a better idea.
All in all, I'd go with the Note 3 anyday. Bu tthat's my personal choice.

Yes I agree that s5 feels cheap. But I think in mobile business no one company is perfect. Every company have their bad side and their popularity side.
S5 / Samsung don't concentrate on design, but Samsung software is really smart and mostly people like it. Its rich in features like hell.
Like I said every company have down and good side. In mobile business that is the main thing..
HTC and make premium design but simple software. But difference is HTC mostly good in sound music and simplycity but Sony good for camera. So depends upon you. That is business.

Also i checked both of the phones in the local store and I am in a even bigger dilemma now I see how the S-pen can come useful, but I find the note 3 a bit big for everyday use. Also The S5 seems kind of slow.. I dont know why but it even seems slower than my HTC One. The camera need a lot of time to open photos after I took them and usually this drives me crazy...
The things most important to me are:
1. Performance
2. Battery
3. Camera
My one usually did the job with the battery and the performance but the camera wasn't what I expected. It takes great shots but 4MP isnt enough for zooming and I often need to zoom my photos to read some text or other...

Hmmm... If you have issues with your own "size", go with the note 3, just as you did when you got the big screen and truck. Or if you're a "size queen" as they're called, go for a note 3. But if you like the finger print gimmick, I pretty much do, or like me sometimes find yourself on hallucinogenic escapades that take you at times in the rain, shower/bath or under waterfalls, the ip6 whatever the rest of it is, will come in handy. Man, everyone talking about the lag, I sure wish I didn't agree. There must be a solution. Off to another sub forum. I want to find the solution. Chime in if any of you know of a rom/trick that speeds this phone up.

Guys. Thanks for the info but I already got the S5. I got it becouse it's a bit smaller device and the Note 3's camera in low light is alful. Also note 3 has 13MP but you can use the camera in 16:9 aspect ratio only on 10MP. On the S5 the 16MP are 16:9. I will miss the s-pen but thats the only thing that I will miss. I also got the s5 becouse I think that it will recieve faster updates. I find the S5 a bit slow (even slower than my one) and also not a big fan of touchwiz. (I didnt think that I will miss sense so much) But overall im happy with the S5 becouse the battery lasts more than twice than my old HTC one and the battery was the most important thing to me.

OK. The Galaxy S6 edge rocks.

(It's not the note 4 but I think it's relevant here; are you gonna get it?)
We're up and the hall is PACKED. Everyone is on their devices.
A woman in tight business suit and high heels comes on stage and welcomes CEO. He has the phone in his his pocket.
Relentless Innovation. We listened, we learned, we pushed forward. We rebuilt from the ground up. The most beautiful phone Samsung have ever produced and the most advanced one in the world.
The screens that go the ENTIRE way around the hall burst into life, aaaaand....
The pictures are exactly as leaked!
As has been the discussion all week, it's the curve that they're pushing - and yes, it's gorgeous. The detail is seamless.
It remains to be seen what they're going to do with the none-curved version.
The pricing will dictate whether or not the S6 flies off the shelf - and it's availability.
I think they should have released just the curve.
There you have it.
The curve is gorgeous. Absolutely. The detail is very precise. The plain S6 is plain ugly.
And the light-up notifications thing on the edge is tickling ALL the journalists.
Will you stick to the Note 4, or switch?
Let the games begin.

Regarding the S6, I don't feel the glass back and the camera sticking out as on the iPhone 6 and 6 plus...Also software wise it does look smoother but the size of the icons and the whole UI looks kinda ugly, especially the percentage bar, it's just too big...also non removable battery is a miss.
If only the note 4 would somewhat benefit from the S6's software
I think Ill stick.Note 4 has got looks but hey s6 looks like iphone 6 same rounded metal frame, same speaker style, same protruding volume buttons.Although s6 edge could be worthy to switch over but can be cleared only when they are available in stores.Except processor Note 4 has an upper hand

I really like the design they've chosen! I've always been jealous of iPhone smooth and clean designs, now there's a similar design from Samsung. No need to get iPhone knock-offs from China with android running.
But I'll still keep my Note 4.
- 5MP Front camera, not my thing, I don't care abt selfies and Note 4's 2MP 3.7MP (Edited) works well for video chat even at low light.
-No SD-Card slot... Bumper.. The choice for buying cheap128GB SD card to store media and easily transfering between devices has been a great advantage for Samsung phones, it will be missed
(Cuz 128 GB ver. Of S6 will be much more expensive than just getting basic 32GB + 128GB SD Card)
-Wireless charging, not an issue... I put in a wireless charging receiver pad and can use qi chargers to charge. No extra bulk.
-5.7" screen of Note 4 will be much better for viewing any media!
-S-Pen... Nuff Said.
However, these are the plus points of S6,
-Speaker at the bottom! Would prefer front facing but at least better than at the back...
- Touch finger print! I've no issues with Note 4's swiping sensor, been using wit great accuracy for months... But the new one might reduce the error rate.
- Double curves on display (S6 Edge)... Its just look smooth and sexy. Less awkward than Note 4 Edge.
-eMMC faster flash memory... Hopefully it'll be like changing from a tradiotinal hardisk to an SSD. With how Lollipop's ART runtime works (fully unpacked apps), S6 will be a beast.
-Exynos for all! Will be a great performer hopefully. Although, custom firmware will be lesser, snapdragon 810 on Note 4 is one of its draw backs. Hope the Exynos will not throttle its performance so much.
Sorry for the long post. Still great devices by Samsung.

The Note 4 has a 3.7MP front camera...
The only thing which I like on the S6 is the 64bit processor, new camera UI and the speaker on the bottom.
Without microsd, its crap.

I originally thought that too, but when I really think about it, I could actually do without the MicroSD. For sale, Note 4U with extra battery, 2 cases, Gear VR, used once, for best offer!! Nuff said!
I like it, but there is no s pen do I don't think it can replace my Note 4.
Definitely much more compelling than the s5 though, which made me yawn.
I'll stick with note 4 ofc.
But if they won't give that better touchwiz to note 4. I won't probably buy another Samsung phone again. limiting exynos 5433 to 32 bit another retarded thing too.

Lets not forget the battery is a smaller 2600mAh unit vs. 2800mAh in the S5, don't even dare give me the CPU is more efficient BS, once you get Facebook, Chrome and Instagram going all that stuff becomes typical marketing talk, and you realise the advantage of a much larger batt.
I'll keep my Note 4 thanks, I just hope the Note 5 doesn't go the same way or I'll be very disappointed.

battery will be probably same with s5.
M glad i left S series at S3. Samsung started distroying it after that. Not worth. The true class in note series.

s5 and note 4 has different battery life. it can just reach s5. probably 5 hour sot will be most for s6.
Waiting for note 5
You all know if the s6 is this good, the note 5 will be twice as good. I love the note 4 because it was a real upgrade from the note 3. Screen, CPu and Gpu. The s6, yes with 64bit with nothing that will use it, the note 5 will come out when there will be software that will use it.
The note 4 is my baby till it dies. I really do not see the need for another phone that will do nothing better on day to day activities.
More so, I really hope Samsung gives us the new tw unlike what they do normally. Which is they may upgrade Android versions but they rarely upgrade tw on older devices

It'd be great if they give us 5.0.2 with the new touchwiz but i doubt that will happen...
You never know, maybe that's one of the reasons for the lack of lollipop on the Note 4 so far (optimising TW)...I hope.
Happy the S6 looks good. Samsung has two ticks a year.
I always keep my phones for two years so I'll pass.
