I'm new to this. Is the only way to install these mods especially the smaller menu bar is with twrp? I'm proud of myself for rooting on my own but these mods scare me. Amy advice for a noob

You can flash with TWRP or any recovery. Don't be scared. But, once you do it, be prepared to be an addict. Good luck!

What are other recovery options. I used twrp with my note 2 but I didn't set it up. It came on my phone.

1) Go to this thread and download the Verizon IMG: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670
2) Then install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify
3) In that app, click on "Recovery Image" and search for the Verizon IMG you downloaded. It will install TWRP and reboot into it. Just reboot to phone
4) Install quick boot: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
5) Download the mod you want
6) Quick boot into recovery
7) Create backup
8) Flash mod
Becarefully flashing multiple mods, some overlap can cause you to lose notification tray and soft-buttons. So always always have a backup.

Hi, a bit of noob but i did googled alot
My plan was:
Unlock and root with nexus 4 toolkit.
Do nandroid backup
Flash PA rom.
step 1 went okay,
afterwards i tried to go to recovery mode inorder to backup but i got the lying android with the red warning sign.
I did backup using Rom Manager and nexus 4 toolkit but I'm worried I can't get to recovery mode if something goes wrong.
How shall I proceed before flashing the rom?
The robot lying on it's back is the stock recovery. You need to flash CWM/TWRP before you can do a Nandroid

Do yourself a favour and learn how to use ADB instead of toolkits that do more harm than good if used by inexperienced users and you`ll learn to do it the right way.
Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474956 for how to.

If you have Rom Manager Installed and are rooted you should be able to install CWM thru it.
don't have flash recovery on rom manager
I don't have the the "Flash CWM" recovery option on rom manager,
I've attached a screen of what I do have,
I did explore the Recovery Setup but wasn't able to do anything usefull.
Any advice?

according to ROM Manager you already have CWM installed and its up to date. Have you tried booting into recovery using ROM Manager?
When I press reboot to recovery directly from rom manager it works...
I'm just affraid that in case that I brick or mess up something I won't be able to get to stock recovery mode.
volume down + power button = bootloader (android on his back) also called fastboot mode
use volume buttons to scroll to recovery then press power button to select it
you should then be in CWM recovery if its installed correctly.
If you are using a custom recovery your stock recovery is gone. You would have to use fastboot to flash the stock recovery image back onto the phone. Its rather simple to do as is flashing the stock image file back onto the phone.
that is why I started this thread.
After I Unlocked and rooted I wasn't able to fastboot and go to recovery mode, it showed my the android on his back.
I've tried it again now and it still doesn't work.
but when I boot directly from rom manager it works...
Edit: I posted before you edited your comment.
even though I don't know adb, should I learn and follow this guide?

There is a bug that restores the stock recovery after a reboot and there should be an option in the root toolkit to fix it. Not saying this is what happened but it may have. The stock recovery is stored in system memory somewhere and the bug fix just removes it so it won't restore itself after reboot.

I call it a bug because its an annoying feature. There are a number of threads no how to remove it but using a toolkit to do it is just as easy.
thank you,
but after I've read what you wrote about the bug I open the nexus root tool kit and then I realized what I should have done.
I pressed Custom recovery checkbox and rooted again.

Glad you got it working. I would still learn adb and fastboot. Though I too use the tool kit every now and then out of convenience.
First of all, I'm not sure about the XDA ettiquette and I want to start by saying that this is NOT mine and that I have NOTHING to do with this.
I also urge mods to merge this thread with KaMMa's original TWRP thread so that he gets all the credit he deserves.
For everyone that doesn't feel like clicking one page back, here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147999
Now after that little disclaimer, here we go.
Installing TWRP if you have no idea what Fastboot/Recovery/Flashing/ADB is.
If you don't know what TWRP is I suggest you use the amazing tool called Google, I think you might've heard of it.
This is a foolproof way to install KaMMa and Dees_Troy's version of TWRP for the Find 5.
It has helped me out and many others just by being this easy.
The only thing you need is a working device with access to the Play Store with ROOT(!).
Here are the steps you will need to take to install TWRP on your device.
1. Connect it to a power source, NEVER flash anything on low battery.
2. Open Play Store, search for GooManager (it's free) and install it.
3. Open GooManager and press the menu key on the bottom left of your device.
This will open up a menu, select install OpenRecoveryScript.
4. Confirm Recovery Install
5. It will prompt you to install openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-find5.img (version will probably change in the future), this is the Recovery image of TWRP that you want! Press yes.
6. Let GooManager do all the magic for you, no ADB, no Fastboot.
7. It might make you reboot the device, it didn't with me but you never know. After you've finished you can try if your install was succesfull.
8. To test go back to the main GooManager screen and press the Reboot recovery option, if the phone reboots to TWRP it has been succesfull, if it's the stock recovery you can try again (you probably pressed No on one of the options)
Again, I had no input in this method, I didn't help KaMMa or Dees_Troy with anything. I'm just trying to share this method.
If you want to donate to KaMMa or thank him please hop over to his thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147999
As this is not development I am moving this to Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting.

You can find instructions on how to install CWM HERE.
And here is the image for Stock Recovery flashable via fastboot, same as CWM installation.
No.. GooManager only works for installing TWRP.

I want to first say that I did not figure out this method on my own, I saw it on Google+ via Matthew Pierce and modified it to make it easier to follow
Second, **do not try this on a device with a locked bootloader. You need the unlocked bootloader to do this**.
You'll want to first download these 2 things
1) Superuser zip to be installed in recovery (from Chainfire) -> http://download.chainfire.eu/366/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v1.72B.zip
2) New TWRP for 4.4 KitKat (from Hashcode)->

Here's the method to get root:
1) let the system fully install the 4.4 Kitkat ota and reboot. **Make sure you are on the first OTA before you try to install the KitKat OTA, otherwise your phone could have major issues.** After it installs, do not do anything else, let it boot into android.
1b) Take the SuperSU installable zip and place it onto the internal storage
2) reboot phone to bootloader.
3) install Hashcode's TWRP using mfastboot flash recovery twrp-2.6.3.1-ghost-4.4.img. (**use the motorola fastboot binary**)
4) reboot device to recovery, do not boot into android before this step!
5) go to install and find then select BETA-SuperSU-v1.72B.zip
6) Boot back into android, and if needed, go to the Play Store and install SuperSU from Chainfire
7) enjoy root!

Probably nothing. The only reason I mentioned the one in the play store, is because TWRP never actually asked me to root in the first place. I thought it was strange, but I didn't really think much of it

That's odd, I used the TWRP version in Hashcodes thread, flashed with the Motorola Fastboot. When I went to restart from TWRP it asked me if I wanted to root and I let it. Now I'm rooted.

Stranger things have happened, I guess. Regardless of which method you use, you'll end up with root either way
This doesn't seem to be working for me. I accidentally rebooted into Android (hit the power button) then tried the whole thing from scratch.
I get an image of andy with "no command" when I boot into recovery.
Edit: Seems like a low battery issue. Will try again after charging.

How do I return my phone to default in order to install OTA
I have already flashed the stock recovery but my phone is still rooted. Do I need to unroot? I tried installing the OTA and it said it failed.
This method should work on any version with with an unlocked bootloader such as Sprint and T-Mobile - not just the dev editions.

Are you selecting recovery with the power button or the volume up button? Volume up selects. If you use the power button, the phone just boots normally.

You can't be plugged in first of all.
Hold volume down and power until you see the LG LOGO let go and press volume down and power again.
It'll go to a factory reset screen which isn't going to factory reset but rather boot you into recovery.
Hit power 3 times.
And now your in recovery.
You can use xposed ( google xposed framework) install something like G2 xposed from the market get it all set up in xposed and reboot.
You should be able to set the option in g2 exposed to set an advanced power menu.
hope this helps if you havent figured it out already or for future reference

all you need to do is download a bad ass program called freegee in the play store, it will automatically detect your phone brand and model and then install either cwm or twrp on your device for you...ive personally used this program for a while now and i own an ls980 and confirm that twrp works wonderful on there....another good program also is twrp manager root from the play store, which allows easy boot to recovery and other useful options....hope this helps..
Hey XDA!
I updated my LG G Pad 8.3 to the korean stock 5.0.2 a while back, and now I wanted the AOSP Marshmallow rom on it - but I had no root or recovery!
Turn out (after three hours of infinite searches and no progress) that the solution is really easy - and can be done on the tablet with no PC!
Just enable USB debugging, download the KingRoot app (http://www.kingroot.net/) and let it root the device for you - it loads pretty slow but works great.
Then follow this link to install TWRP (https://twrp.me/devices/lggpad83.html) by following their link to the Play Store. Install the TWRP app, select your device (v500) and the latest recovery image, then confirm the recovery location and let it install the recovery image for you. Mine gave an error but booted right into TWRP afterwards despite saying failed.
And that is it!
Hey dude, after almost a year, someone finnally discovered how to do it! .But I have one problem, I can install the 2.8.7.0 twrp version, but I can't boot into recovery. It just stays in the LG logo, with the (normal) error text on the top left. How did you make it?
Interesting... k

I have the same issue.
root ok
twrp 2.8.7 ok
reboot to recovery stay on the boot logo with "boot certification verify problem" error.
Tried quick boot same issue ...
I tried KingRoot a few months ago and had similar problems. It was kind of like a partial root that worked of a fashion but not completely.
The only way I know of to go from Lollipop to a custom ROM is to download a KitKat kdz and flash it through the Mobile Tool and then root that. Quite a hassle - and one I'm just about to start now.
I've been off the V500 forum for a little while, so maybe there is a better solution out there.
I only rooted because I'm scared of bootloop since in this thread still no answer on how to boot to recovery.
Actually I installed and used successfully an ad blocker and titanium but SuperSU can't be installed because of the missing twrp.
I hope that the thread creator will answer on how to go to recovery.

When installing recovery image with twrp I get a message that installation failed, but anyway twrp reports that recovery image is installed. (Same thing happened with KingRoot, but then recovery image was not installed)
When I try to boot in to recovery I get the annoying boot error message

Hi guys, I need your help. I just flashed the Hong Kong version of 5.0.2 to my gpad using LG Flash Tool 2014 and everything went well. Now I found out that there is a 5.1 update in the net for gpad and I even manage to download it. But the problem is that the update file is in zip format which means that I cannot use the Flash tool and it seems that LG disable recovery mode to allow sideloading of update zip files. I really don't want to install custom recovery so if anyone of you have any idea of what I can do to flash this update, please help.
Finally got TWRP to work
Next step is to install cm-13.0
Followed this post to get TWRP working. Had some problems regarding location of *.img files. But if you read the thread I have explained what I had to do.
