Long story short, I was trying out new kernels, got stuck in a boot loop, nothing would fix it, so I tried to restore back to stock rom. I did it manually in fastboot mode, but the bootloader .img would not write. It gave an error saying mismatched signatures. I redownloaded the image, I tried using a couple of different methods, like using toolkits and various commands, and finally, without thinking, erased the bootloader using the fastboot erase command with the intent of re-writing it, which obviously I can not do or I would no longer be here. It still boots, in the sense that I hear the notification on the computer that a device has been connected, but it shows up as NVidia APX in my list of devices on windows instead of Nexus 7 now, and the screen shows nothing. So... how screwed am I? If it is hopeless, is there any way to return/replace it (without using questionable methods)? Thanks.

You flash your bootloader? That's the last thing one should do. We only need to unlock it, not flash it.

It was already unlocked and rooted, etc, but I kept getting an error about it every time I tried flashing a rom, and the device wouldn't boot anyway, so I got frustrated and derped. I know that was pretty stupid, just wondering if there is any hope.

sounds just like your situation... unfortunately you will most likely have to return/exchange/RMA
Hi guys, I recently had the misfortune of getting my Nexus 7 bricked.
Right. So if I claim warranty, how do I go about it? I don't mean the contacting htem and stuff. But what do I say to them to ensure maximum chance of getting the warranty?
I mean, I have voided the warranty by installing custom software on my Nexus. But is there any way I could actually logically persuade them to give me warranty? Or is it just luck? Hoping you get a not-so-smart technician to verify it is suitable for warranty?

Just call & request an RMA number. If it's truly bricked, they will not be able to ascertain that you installed a custom ROM.
Thank you for that answer but I thought RMAs were for when you returned the device within the first 15days?
And sadly, its obvious that there is a custom rom instAlled. Its hardbricked with an unstoppable bootloop, showing Clockworkmod recovery

What if i do specify some hardware fault that my nexus did have? Like the ghost touch issue. could i get it replaced under that pretext?

Why do you say that it is hard bricked? It's near impossible to hard brick a Nexus device. If you see the Google logo when the device powers on, you should be able to go into fastboot mode. Then just use fastboot commands to flash TWRP or CWM recovery and then just flash a ROM from recovery.

Yea, it is hard-bricked. As it is stuck in a bootloop involving CWM-Fastboot-CWM------
It's a long story, which is actually in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468392
The circumstances of my bootloop are eerily similar, right down to the name of rom I flashed. Or it's probably because of that.
I flashed a new ROM (Kaos Droid 7.0.0) and the fitting gapps some minutes ago from CWM Touch. Everything worked as supposed, no errors, no warnings, nothing. Then I rebooted the Nexus 7 and now it's stuck in the worst bootloop I have seen so far:
The Google Screen appears, stays for some seconds, then I see a screen with the CWM Logo and the text "ClockworkmodRecovery 6.0.38", after this the device seems to reboot and the sequence starts from the beginning again.
I can not get into recovery, I can connect to my PC via USB but connection and disconnection happens every few seconds (because of the bootloop).

But I'd rather you answered my questions about warranty since this problem seems totally unfixable. It doesn't respond to any keypress I make except for long-press power.

Weird. But if it's rather obvious that you voided the warranty, I don't think they'll send you a new one.
That's the problem. The Google logo does appear and technically I'm supposed to be able to use my fastboot commands to undo the issue. But it doesn't work. Since the nexus doesn't respond to a single button press. So I cannot enter fastboot mode proper.
Yea, I knew that. But what if I get it replaced on some other reason than that?

No. It's like when you type reboot recovery. It just goes directly into cwm. And then it reboots and again. And again.

Since you can't access MTP, you can try ADB Sideload. (It's a feature in later versions of ClockworkMod Recovery and Team Win Recovery. Why are you still using CWM by the way?) It'll transfer the flashable ZIP to the root of /sdcard and it'll flash immediately after.
RMAs should be only used for last resort bootloader bricks if you don't have access to the proprietary blobs. Luckily, you're fine.

Mate, my nexus does not respond in any way to the keypresses I make. So I cannot access clockworkmod, or fastboot mode, or even try to force a regular boot. It just bootloops on and on, completely unimpressed by my presses

Oh, my mistake. I didn't see your video. Sorry about that. (Bootlooping might be incorrect terminology for recovery. I'm not sure.) Try reflashing another recovery image like TWRP instead? That's the best I can give you for now.

Okay, I love that you're atleast trying to help. But the point is I literally have no way of flashing anything on it. I cannot do anything to it, bro. Whatever I do it just keeps bootlooping on and on. If I could access fastboot, I could easily fix this problem but I can't so.
I'd love your feedback concerning what I should do with regards to warranty
BrianXP7 said:
Again, it's not a bootloader brick. You don't need an RMA. In the video, you simply left it booting normally (then falling back to recovery). Also, it's not recovery's issue. It's probably the internal ROM that's made unbootable by some kind of OTA update.
To enter Fastboot mode, turn off your device completely. After, hold Power + Volume Down. Release Power (keep holding Volume Down) when "Google" displays. If done successfully, it'll display an Android lying down. That's Fastboot mode.
Unless you somehow damaged your hardware keys, you might be completely screwed. In order for your RMA to be accepted, you need to remove any trace of modification and relocking the bootloader. If you did restore it to an RMA acceptable state, it's already usable. (Screwing with the bootloader completely, or APX mode, will be accepted as they can't detect if you unlocked the bootloader or not.)

Yes, but you need access to Fastboot. If you did have access Fastboot, might as well fix it yourself. Basically, you flashed an incorrect bootloader image or interrupt the writing process. (Just don't think about it unless you have a bootloader backup.)

Okay, Can you do something for me?
Type su and then reboot recovery on the terminal.
Now when the Google Image is shown in the beginning, can you try to put it in Fastboot mode instead? Power + Volume Down, like you said.
Tell me if it works
BrianXP7 said:
What? I think you're over-complicating things. You don't even seem to try.
Just turn your device off. (Forced, normally, however you want.) Hold Power + Volume Down until "Google" appears. (That's when you release the power button but keep holding Volume Down.) If you see an Android laying down with a few options such as "Reboot normally", you're in Fastboot mode.
After that, just flash the stock factory images. It's as simple as that.

I need You to do that for me. And tell me if it works. My Nexus 7 simply cannot be saved. Whatever I do, It doesn't respond. I know all about Fastboot mode, and recovery mode, and flashing factory images. I'm not a n00b like you seem to think. I do have a problem, but it seems to have been caused by random hardware fault rather than a fault on my part. But the result is the same.

Hi, nobody_nowhere..
I will try, but I'm not quite what it is you're asking of me...
If it's concerning RMA, then I don't think I'm going to be of much help, I'm afraid... as I don't know the procedure for claiming under warranty (ie., RMA), having never done it myself.
My own Nexus 7 is just a liitle over a year old now, and I've so far been fortunate in having only had minor, and easily recoverable softbrick/bootloop type situations.
In your second post on this thread, you suggest that RMAs were time limited to just 15 days. I'm not completely sure, but I think this is incorrect. In most countries/jurisdictions, warranties usually run for 12 months. This is certainly the case here in the UK.
The thread you mention, well, having read it yourself, you'll know that I attempted to resolve the problem experienced by the OP of that thread... and it all came to nothing in the end.
There seems to be two recognisable categories of 'brick'... hardbrick, typically caused by a damaged, corrupt or wholly erased bootloader... and softbrick, which can have any number of causes, but is usually always resolvable - principally by accessing fastboot mode. Fastboot mode, is a sort of a 'get-out-of-jail' free card... and I've used it many times in the past.
But if you can't access fastboot mode (apropos of your current predicament), but the bootloader still works (if it didn't, NOTHING AT ALL would happen), your technically not hardbricked.
You have an unrecoverable soft brick... semi-hardbrick maybe? - a third category of 'brick'??
With regard to claiming under warranty... as I've already said, I really have no idea how to go about doing this, but I assume some sort of 'phone conversation would initially start the ball rolling and some questions would be asked of the owner of the Nexus 7...
...but, if it is unambiguously clear (and it sounds like it is, with CWM boot looping), that you've installed custom software, then there's no point in being disingenuous. As soon as they receive the device, they'll know. It you're honest with them, you might have a fair chance of them fixing it. If you lie outrightly, your credibility suffers.
Your best bet, I think, is to emphasize that's it's a hardware issue - emphasize the buttons aren't working properly. Emphasize that you're a knowledgeable Android user, and you're familiar with fastboot, and flashing custom software. The idea, here, is to make it more of a hardware problem, than a software problem - because it then throws the ball back into their court. And personally, I happen to think it is a hardware problem. I have no idea if this will work or not - I'm really just guessing here.
Whether installing custom software itself is sufficient to void warranty is a discussion that could fill an entire thread many pages over, such is the ambiguity of the issue.
It's generally considered, though, that unlocking the bootloader alone, is enough to leave your warranty in tatters... but flashing a Google factory stock image requires the bootloader to be unlocked anyway. So, I'm not quite sure how that contradiction squares itself away!
Indeed the flash-all.* script, that ships with factory stock images, unlocks the bootloader as matter of course. Of course, Google recommend re-locking the bootloader afterwards.
And what of Nexus 7 Jellybean 4.2.2 users, several months ago, who could root without unlocking the bootloader at all, using the motochopper "exploit".
Does rooting with an exploit count as installing custom software... you're messing with /system after all?
Ultimately though, I think that you may have to face an unpalatable truth - that tinkering with your device, does sometimes go wrong... in ways that leave even the most experienced users baffled (and I'm not even close to that level of knowledge and expertise).
There are some posters, here on XDA, who have in their sig., a list of previously owned devices... crossed out... and the word BRICKED next to them. These are the guys with thousands of posts to their name... and their 'graveyard' of dead devices are their metaphorical battlescars.
As soon as you type fastboot oem unlock, you're tacitly accepting that this may happen to you some day... you've effectively 'removed the back' of of that expensive clock/watch/HiFi system or Nexus 7... in the belief you can make it 'go' faster or perform better. Most of the time, you will be successful, and you will make it perform better, with whatever Custom ROM or kernel you've chosen to install.
But sometimes, something will go so horribly wrong... that there is no way back.
And all that is then left is the capriciousness of the company you have warranty with (via RMA)... and you're own negotiating skills.
I really do wish there was some button sequence, or command line I could suggest... but when dealing with the warranty people... you're on your own, sorry to say. Ultimately, and essentially... they may choose to repair it, or not. And beyond that, there's not much else I can add.
Except... best of luck.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Hello Guys,
yesterday I restarted my Nexus 4, running the cm-13.0-20160520-NIGHTLY-mako. It stuck at the bootlogo, so I tried to reflash it in the twrp 2.8.7.0 recovery. But I got the error message "E:/ unable to mount /cache".
After that I was trying to solve this issue by wiping the cache, but I got the same error message -> The phone wasn't booting
From now on I did several things to solve my problem. I don't know the exact order.
- I've downloaded the Nexus Root Toolkit from WugFresh -> Tried to use the Flash Stock + Unroot Option with Soft-Bricked/Bootloop status enabled -> I choosed the 5.1.1 Factory Image -> In the cmd window, I get in every point the same error message "Falied (remote: flash write failure) -> I get the same message when I'm trying to manually flash each part of the factory image via fastboot
- Within the Toolkit I also tried to format cache, system and Userdata, but afther this I get the same error when trying to do the step before
- I think also used the Fastboot Flash options, but I'm not sure.
- After that I attempted to flash the cm13.zip via adb-sideload in TWRP. Here is a part from the error message I get:
"(...) could not detect filesystem for /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system, assuming ext4
mount: failed to mount /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system at /system: Invalid argument
unmount of /system failed: no such volume (...)
E: Error executing updater binary in zip 'sideload/package.zip'
E: Unable to mount '/data'
- In TWRP the Internal Storage is shown with 0mb
- Currently only the bootloader is working fine and I also can get a fastboot and adb connection to the phone
-> Loading the recovery is only possible by booting a recovery image in fastboot
Can somebody tell me if it is possible to restore my Nexus 4 and how to do it?
Thank you in advance :fingers-crossed:
PS: I hope I mentioned all the important points. If some information is missing, feel free to ask me.

Thank you for your answer.
I tried to flash the newest cm13 in TWRP and with adb Sideload. I get the same error.
Also the 4.2 Stock rom doesn't work. Same problem as with the 5.1.1 factory image.
I also switched the cable and the USB ports, but it leads to the same error messages.
Try flashing the userdata.img file in fastboot. As soon as userdata finishes flashing, use the buttons to boot into recovery and perform a factory wipe. User the usedata.img file included with the stock ROM you flashed.
From what I see, your partitions got completely messed up. I reckon if it's fixable at all (assuming your chip ain't dead), the only thing that can fix it is fully reflashing everything via emergency mode. Now I can't seem to find the exact link, but I do know there was a thread on xda with instructions and everything. I'll keep digging around to see if I can find anything and then I'll link it here.

Unfortunately yes. After locking the bootloader via fastboot, the bootloader is marked as unlocked after rebooting.
Do I have to change the mainboard?
This confirms that the emmc chip is damaged and can only be fixed via a motherboard swap.
I had similar problems with two nexus 5 phones where I would unlock the bootloader but would always relock on reboot.

Aye that's the thread I've been talking about. And yeah, the links are down for quite a while, I reckon the OP doesn't maintain it anymore. Anyways I used the tool once, I found all the files by Googling for like 4 hours or so - the most difficult one being the .dll file and getting the program itself to run. I'd upload them to you but there were on my C disk on my main rig and that got wiped when I reinstalled Windows :S I'm sure the files are on the net even now tho, I remember getting the .dll file from some Chinese website, Chrome's translator gave me enough info to actually download the file. Once I got it up and running the flash was OK, I've tested the method from that thread myself, the only problem is getting the files from the links that are down. I wish you good luck in your search for them, I know what an awful feeling it is for your nexus to die, my mako is still my daily driver, still kickin' ass

I did however have to change the motherboard out, since, while the flash was ok, the chip was not, so it didn't help much. I had an issue with my /data partition where it was completely gone, and the while filesystem got messed up, the only thing I could boot to was bootloader and even that only while on charger. Eventually I swapped my motherboard with a friends who didn't need her nexus 4 anymore and now it's ok. I suggest you first attempt the method from that link and if that fails, then you should resort to getting a new motherboard, but imo only if you can get it either dirt cheap or in a way like I did. Caching out around 100$ for a new nexus 4 mb, with phones like nexus 5X 32Gb costing 300$ is not a good investment if you ask me.

hi, i have a problem with my N6P. it was unlocked, twrp flashed and running newest version of this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/development/rom-debloated-prerooted-deoxeded-t3372600.
then, out of the blue, phone refused to work. when i'm trying to restart it, only option is boot to bootloader. i was trying to flash newest radio, bootloader, vendor and recovery - all failed with message "(remote: flash write failure)"
when i'm in bootloader mode, Andy Android is lying on his back, with no red exclamation point.
also there is written below Andy:
BL: K
Baseband: (empty)
Product/Variant: Angler-VN2
Serialn Number: (is present, but i think there is no need to write it)
CPU: MSM8994 0x20001
eMMC: 32GB Samsung
DRAM: 3072MB HYNIX LPDDR4
Console: NULL
Battery OK
Device is LOCKED
Qfuse Status: ENABLED
Off-Mode-charge: ENABLED
Download Mode: DISABLED
Connect USB Data Cable
strange thing is, that there is written "Device is LOCKED", because when wrote command "fastboot flashing unlock", there was a message:
...
(bootloader) Device already unlocked!
FAILED (remote failure)
I was able to fastboot boot boot.img, but it hanged on "Google" screen.
device is not visible after writing "adb devices", but is visible after writing "fastboot devices".
any ideas?
Might be a dumb question, but have you tried going back to stock Android N using Googles Factory Image in fastboot just to determine if your phone will still boot into os?
i'm downloading GFI, but 3 more hours left to finish download (unless there is a mirror server to download them). i'll probably try to do it, but i would like to avoid it because my backup is 2 months old :/

You might be right about fried emmc, have you tried placing a twrp.img in fastboot folder and run command fastboot boot twrp-x-x-x.img (not flash)? If it is fried can you rma?

1. i tried to flash recovery - no luck.
2. there will be problem with RMA, because i won this phone in a giveaway at AndroidAuthority.com and it has US warranty, so it would be rather expensive to send it to USA from Poland. but i will try to contact Huawei support in my country.

thank you. unfortunatelly this is for LG devices. i can't find anything similiar for Huawei devices. i did tried Nexzus Root Toolki by Wug Fresh and i got the same error - "remote flash write failure"
so i think i will try to contact Huawei and local phone service to see, if they are able to fix it. thank you for your help.
Did you try to format data partition then flash the google image?

strange thing is, that i'm able to relock the bootloader (at least command "fastboot flashing lock" gave me possibility to do this {(YES/NO) message}, i didn't relocked it.
i've read, that this is probably fried emmc, but would it be possible to relock bootloader though?

Same thing just happened to me except I was just using my phone then it crashed and never came back tried for days to recover was able to re-lock bootloader but no other commands took. Had to RMA it back to Huawei took 3 weeks but it was covered by 12 month warranty so that's a plus
did you switch on find my phone in administer options before unlocking and flashing errors ?

no, i didn't touch it.
Happened to me too while using it. I am still trying to save my data, but no luck for now.
Asus' unlock tool for M1 is dead (network error, guess they just cut the line for older models). Attached one I had in my backup from who knows how long ago, since I couldn't find any working links anymore.
Trying unlock tool for newer devices throws "Device model is not supported".
Dev. menu option for OEM Unlock is not available in neither of "official" images.
Max Pro's unlock doesn't work for this device.
So am I really stuck with Android 10 Beta release? I guess it is kind of "win" considering this release isn't completely bloated by Asus, but it would still be nice to get TWRP and Lineage on it. Not to mention I really wanted to give the Postmarket try on this device.
I'm more than willing to be lab rat if anyone wants to try.. stuff.. on my device, at this point I wouldn't even mind if it got bricked in progress.
Alright I have not given up on this, yet. I've stumbled upon post from one of the Asus' moderators on their forums:
For ZB555KL, there will no longer be any system updates and maintenance (including server).
Sorry for any inconvenience it may cause.

What this means is there is no official way to unlock this phone anymore, as their unlock app has nothing to communicate with.
In the same thread, another user posted this:
I dont know if you are still looking for this but after working on it for hours what you are looking for is:
in fastboot mode type:
fastboot oem enable-unlock-once
will unlock the bootloader for you until the phone is reset. Just have to do it everytime you reboot back into fastboot.
Also if you're flashing recovery, these other 2 commands may prove useful:
fastboot oem reboot-recovery
fastboot oem reboot-recovery-wipe
Cheers!

Indeed using this, I was able to flash recovery. Multiple actually: TWRP, stock from step 3 of the post, OrangeFox, stock again.
Why? Well, booting into any recovery leaves me hanging on black screen.
I've tried TWRP, OrangeFox. Nothing. I have found stock recovery image as well, which I have flashed. Got black screen again. BUT. Thanks to the stock recovery image I've figured out it was actually working, since after pressing some buttons randomly (kind of stupid, I know, but I though its bricked at that point anyway) I've managed to wipe data and was presented with fresh startup. I'm thinking both TWRP and OrangeFox worked as well, its the screen that doesn't want to show things for some reason while in recovery.
So if any of you got any ideas why would any recovery present me with blank screen and how should I deal with it, I'm all ears. Or eyes..
