[GUIDE] Install custom fonts via flashable zip on AOSP 4.3 ROMs - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I posted this in a ROM thread, but figured it might be useful to others who run 4.3 custom ROMs and want to change their stock system font (apparently users have been getting bootloops when trying to use an app to change the font).
Requirements:
1. Must be rooted.
2. Must have a custom recovery for flashing the zip (so, at this time, only devices with pre-MF3 firmware).
1. Download the font changer flashable zip template that I put together here: http://www.mediafire.com/?3xqzzuov9uhunr5
2. Get a hold of the font you want to change to, making sure it's in *.ttf format.
3. Rename the font to Roboto-Regular.ttf. If the font you downloaded has a Bold variant, download it rename it to Roboto-Bold.ttf.
4a. If you're on your computer, use 7Zip/WinRAR to drag and drop the fonts you just renamed to the "system/fonts" folder within my template. If you renamed them precisely as I specified above, they should overwrite the two existing files of the same name. If your font doesn't have a Bold variant, you don't need to worry about the existing Roboto-Bold.ttf file in the archive (it's the stock bold font from 4.3 ROMs).
4b. If you're doing this from your phone (like I always do), either use Zarchiver (Free app in the Play Store) to perform the same process as described in Step 4a, or just use Root Explorer or something similar to unzip the entire template zip, drop the new fonts in the respective folder, and re-zip the template.
5. Flash away!
I've been using this method (within a custom GAPPs package that I maintain for myself with other customizations like clear GAPPs, etc.) for awhile now, and it's always worked without fail.
In case you're curious, the "custom" font that I use is just the Roboto-Light.ttf that is already included in the stock 4.3 /fonts folder. It's just a bit thinner than the stock font, and just looks cleaner IMO. If you want to try this one out, just flash my template zip without making any changes

I tried this method but it just results in a bootloop. I have this RobotoCondensed4.3.zip that I downloaded from somewhere and it's worked on all the roms I've used but replacing the fonts inside the zip doesn't work for me. and if I flash it after using your method it fixes the bootloop. any ideas? I'm trying to flash the Droid Sans font

Are you flashing this on a fresh ROM install before booting for the first time? That's what it was meant for (there are no permissions-fixing in the updater-script. Can you post that zip you're talking about? I should be able to figure out what exactly it is that is causing it to "fix" the bootloop after using my method.

no, I don't think I've flashed it on a fresh install. I'll attach a link for the zip.. and if you can figure out how to add the font droid sans to this zip instead of roboto condensed that would be great. also what I like about this zip is that it will change every font on the phone, even the fonts in chrome which nothing else I've tried will do that.. I was using iFont but that didn't change fonts in chrome

help needed modifying ROM pre-flash

i attempted to replace most of the .apks in the system app folder with the same .apks from an ealier version of the rom (because i prefer black to blue/black). i replaced them in the .zip before i flashed it, hoping it would work.. but it didnt.. in the recovery menu it says:
....
verifying update package...
e:wrong digest:
system/app/browser.apk
e:verification failed
browser was one i replaced. how do i make this work? i dont want to use root explorer to manually replace each ****ing thing, and i have no patients for adb. i must need to sign the package or something? i never unpacked anything, just replaced some contents.. thought id be fine..
on a related note there may be more issues to come. unzipped the framework-res.apk to my computer, renamed it .zip, went inside and replaced the battery icons, renamed it back to .apk and replaced the modified file in the rom. who knows what chaos i might have caused there.. if you know what to expect and how to fix it please feel free to help!
if it matters at all, the rom im modifying and flashing is nonsensikal 9.5 black/blue, the system apps came from version 8.2 black, and battery icon .pngs came from 5.4 black.
Id try and resign the whole rom after you make your changes it should be just fine
you cannot simply replace the apks in the zip, then flash. after replacing, use one of the following methods:
if you use linux, use EasySign (http://android.grdlock.net/index.php?&direction=0&order=&directory=HTC Droid Eris/Extras) or the Android Kitchen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246).
if using Windows:
Use AutoSign (http://androidforums.com/developer-101/8665-how-signing-roms.html).
Thanks. I'll get on the computer and give it a shot.

if you've unzipped the framework-res.apk then none of this will work anyway. You need to pull the images out of the old framework-res.apk and drag and drop them back into the new framework-res.apk without unzipping it. You shouldn't even need to rename it to zip. Just open it with a program like 7zip without unzipping and drop the png's in the correct folders. Then you can put the .apk back in the rom and resign from the links directed above.
Oh it all worked fine. I never unzipped framework, just extracted it from the Rom and renamed it, then replaced files, renamed back to apk, and replaced in original .zip. it worked great.
To achieve full 9.5 black I have to copy all of the previous versions (black) framework .pngs to the new Rom though.
I think the file is like, drawable-mpdi or something. Not landscape or non. I don't really know.. not in right frame of mind

Looking for a tutorial: how to cook a ROM?

I'm looking for a guide which tells how to make a own custom ROM from another one
I mean:
1. How to add/replace/remove apps in /system/app/?
1. a) Do they need to have special permission?
2. How to replace boot screen?
3. How to add custom kernel?
4. How to add Desire lockscreen/flip clock?
5. How to add transparent notofication area?
6. How to add Power menu?
I've been serching forum, but didn't find such tutorial. Would be very thanful to get this knowledge.
I think that will be very useful for maaaany android maniacs
1. Simple delete/copy apks in .zip file using 7-Zip or any other.
2. I belive you need to put bootanimation.zip in /data/local/ folder.
3. Idk
4. For Desire lockscreen you need edited HtcLockScreen.apk; for flip clock - HtcClockWidget.apk
5. Edited /system/framework-res.apk or /system/framework/com.htc.resources.apk. I'm not sure
6. You need edited /system/framework/android.policy.jar
69. Resign your zip file using Auto Sign
Attachment doesn't load, but I know about resigning ROM after everything is done
Ad. 1. As I thought, but do the need special permissions? And I also wonder one thing. Are they installed while flashing? Cuz they need to be in system registry, I think...
I have found this: http://wiki.android.com.pl/wiki/Kon...iana_instalowanych_aplikacji_razem_z_systemem
No any permissions etc.
Found this, too. Thanks.
to add a custom kernel you have to unpack the boot image and edit the ramdisk manually, although i think there is an option in dsixda's kitchen to unpack and repack the boot.img
I've got two more questions:
1. When signing, three files are created in folder META-INF: CERT.RSA, CERT.SF, MANIFEST.SF. But in other packages I see also com/google/android/update-script in META-INF. How to make it? Is it necessary?
2. If I want to make only flashable update file which changes one app or another file, eg. framework-res.apk, I have to create folder structure: system/framework/framework-res.apk, add it to zip archive (no compression?) and sing using Auto-sing. Am I right?
Edit:
Found nice guide there: update-script syntax

The most important part of a recovery update zip is the update script. It will tell the recovery what to do. If you want an example of a basic update package, which replaces one file in the /system/framework (although a different one) can found here. Open this and read the META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script (or whatever its called). The syntax is pretty straight forward and I think its easiest to learn from the examples of updater scripts found here on XDA. For the simple case, of only replacing/adding files to the /system partition you can leave the updater script from the above example as is and only change the files under the /system directory in the zip.
Note, that the above example uses the newer upader-script (I hope I am writing this correctly, I am writing from memory) which also has a binary file in the same directory. Some update zips use the older "update-script" lone text script. For these kind of scripts, you can find a guide here.
Personally, I use RA recovery, and for this recovery you need to sign the update zips (last thing you do of course). At least for RA recovery, both the older "update-script" and the newer "updater-script" work fine, so its up to your personal preference which do you prefer.
Thanks. Found a guide you mentioned a couple of minutes ago and read it.
The more I know, the more questions it brings So one more thing. If I'd like to use the newer version of syntax: "updater-script", I need also to put this binary file in this folder. But I create/edit only "updater-script", binary file is the same for all packages, or do I need to edit it, too?
I built a kernel tool long time ago, very easy to use (only for linux)
1: unzip the file, place it where you want it eg your desktop
2: place boot.img in the working directory
3: double-click the menu icon or launch from terminal
4: it creates a new directory named BOOT-EXTRACT,edit what you want in there or change the kernel etc.. and repack it again via the kernel tool
see screenshot. here for those how want the tool >>> http://www.elelinux.se/tools/kernel_tool.zip
Edit: Only for Hero

Only the updater-script. The binary is a replacement of the script-interpreter I think, but thats just an assumption.

But it is for MS Windows, or saw I wrong ? I have also built a tool to javasign files, but should probably write a manual first,it is easy to use but some dependencies maybe not so easy for a beginner with Linux.

[Q] Is it possible?

... to "flash" or otherwise install theme type mods such as changing a notification icon, without recovery? I had experimented with framework type flashable zip files to do with on my GS3 and always flashed from recovery. I am trying to (at least for now) keep from tripping my KNOX.
Also is there a wifi hotspot app or mod that also does not require recovery?
With a towel root, I can probably do everything I want, and keep my KNOX at 0, if I can do these two things.

Sure. It's just more work. Having root gives you the necessary permissions to change system files and do anything that a (recovery) flashable zip file would.
But pragmatically, it wouldn't be reasonable to expect everyone going around writing custom install scripts for your theme mods when the common practice is to package them as a flashable zip.
The solution? It would be eminently useful to learn how to make manual changes yourself. Theme mods typically modify a system file e.g. TouchWizHome.apk or SystemUI.apk. You can make simple edits or replace packages with a root aware file browser e.g. FX. And more advanced edits with a decompiler like apktool.

Oh I don't expect others to make my scripts. I was making the zip packages myself.
If I understand you correctly, I can use something like FX to replace the an icon in one of the .apks? Those are zip type files but FX can do that?
As I already said, yes you can. Icons are (usually) especially easy. It's literally just replacing an icon with a file browser, usually in the xxhdpi360 drawable folder of the apk.
Something like
Copy the apk to another directory or your PC
Temporarily rename the .apk to a .zip file
Use FX Root to browse the compressed file and locate the icon you want to change.
Delete the icon from the zip.
Drag and drop the new icon to replace it.
Rename the .zip back to .apk
Browse to the folder where you copied the apk from
Rename the original .apk to .bak in case you need it later
Move your modified apk to the directory
Confirm that the permissions are still 0644 (long press to check.. but I've never seen FX mess them up to start with).
Reboot
That may look like a lot of steps but they are all trivial and you can do the entire thing in about 60 seconds.
Features e.g. suppressing nags or some colour changes may require decompiliing an apk.

How do I completely change the icons in the Samsung Galaxy young GT-S5360

Dear brothers :
I installed a custom ROM for my phone samsung Galaxy young GT-S5360
Dedicated Roman Information :
ROM Name:
Hyperion - Titan of the East
Build number:
Hyperion.DXLF2
I did not like the icons
How do I change the entire Icons
You experience a number of applications such as :
ICON CHANGER PRO
Did not do any good
Mentioned application does change the icons and put a shortcut on the desktop
I do not want this
I want to change application icons on the home screen
How so .?
Decompile the application you want to change the icon of with apk tool
You can see what the icon name is in the Android manifest
The icon itself will be located in res/drawable-ldpi
An easier way might be to download an icon pack (search the theme section)
Then open the Flashable zip & find the app name you are looking for - open that folder & put the image you want in there replacing the image in the folder (rename your image to match the one you are replacing)
Then flash it in cwm with system mounted

Flash Stock ROM missing META-INF directory

Kinda makes this noob sick. I just got a new Moto G4 X1625 (not Amazon). Next came the steps to unlock the bootloader with Motorola and to install TWRP. Everything had gone so easily by following some how-to steps I jumped to the next step of installing SuperSU without doing a backup – thinking it was simply adding an app. Big mistake! Reboot and now always stuck on the logo boot animation.
Okay, so I found and tried use TWRP to install ATHENE_6.0.1_MPJ24.139-13.1_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip in an attempt to get back to stock. No luck there since install always aborts with a "Could not find 'META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary' in the zip file."
I checked a couple of other ROMs and that META-INF directory doesn't seem to be included in them either.
What do I need to do just to get back to normal eliminating the effects of that SuperSU install? Help greatly appreciated.
That file you downloaded is not a flashable file.
Instead, read this linky
Thanks for the helpful clue @t0mm13b. I followed the approach at <http://www.stechguide.com/download-stock-firmware-of-moto-g4-and-g4-plus/> and executed the listed commands from my MacOS Terminal. They did the job resulting in a fresh install after bootup.
2-1/2 questions…
1. Are flashable ROM files readily available? The ones I found all seemed missing the META-INF directory. Will they be .img files and not .zip?
2. Is TWRP not useful for these stock ROMs?

As a general rule of thumb, read the accompanying text to the link of the download, on a web page where you find one. It will tell you if it's flashable or not.
Factory images, just like what you had to carry out previously, never have, and do not have the `META-INF` directory. They usually contain img files that requires `fastboot flash`.
On the other hand, OTAs and flashable zips will have that in their respective zip file.
Thanks again @t0mm13b for the clarification. I often didn't see info about whether a ROM is flashable in link or web page text, but it may have just been assumed based on being aware of what the zip contains.
