Hello all,
I have just ordered my Nexus 4 and while I wait I'm looking at all the apps/Roms/mods for it. I have chosen N4 over S4 or HTC One mainly because of the price. I hate the fact that this will be my 3rd Android experience without acceptable audio recording in videos with loud environment. Finger crossed for a fix but I doubt it.
I think I made the right decision although Nexus phones don't excel in best hardware they are very well optimized running pure Android and not to mention the latest versions. The development for this model also is better then S4 and HTC One
From what I have found so far I am going to get Faux kernel and sound and I will also install the mode to improve the camera quality and maybe enable LTE.
If anyone has other advice or apps/ROM/modes that you think they are worth please post them here. Thank you devs for this wonderful forum! Cheers!

Audio recording in loud enviroments is impossible due to the way microphones work. Take a $5000 microphone and it'll suck at it too.

I have asked on other threads if anyone can test Faux Sound and modify the Camcorder Microphone Gain to -10 or -15 I think it will make the recording OK but I can't yet test since I'm still waiting for the Nexus to arrive .
Everyone is obsessed with modifying GPU and CPU values but there are few who are interested in sound and those that are care only about the quality when listening to music. I think it's very important to be able to record OK sounds even if the sounds are loud. I know about the copyright thing and believe me this is not the issue since there are still phones out there that record good sound. If you are are someone's birthday and you want to record some memories you will have to ditch the sound
Wonder if Nexus 5 will still have this issue and finger crossed for 4.4 to allow mic gain control.
I finally have my Nexus 4 with 8GB. I have it for about 1 week and I have not root it. Did anyone managed to reduce the gain on the mic to record K loud sound?
I think this is the most amazing Android experience yet and I don't mind about the battery or thermal throttling at all.
I am even pleased with the 8GB since I have 50GB on Box and 15 on GDrive.
Only complaint is the poor sound when recording loud sounds.

I noticed that I did pick up unwanted noise on recording videos, but really I would rather it be too sensitive than not enough.
Hey guys,
I encountered several times the problem when I film a concert of a band or something like that: Video(graphics) are super, but the sound is terrible! Everything is screwed up..
I think it depends on the microphone gain, but how can i change it?
Or got someone a better solution?

Oh god. My failure, I never wrote that. It's fairly easy. Use a custom kernel and adjust microphone gain with a kernel controlling app. Last time I did it with Trickster MOD kernel settings and it worked fine, my recording had an awesome quality! I don't know if it works with Franco kernel app or faux kernel app? Can anyone tell?

On my original Nexus 7, the sound chip is very bad, at max volume the sound isn't even medium loud on my headphones.
I use PowerAMP with bass boost and treble boost on (I listen to electro mainly.) How does the new Nexus 7 compare?
Also, can someone compare the new Nexus 7 to S III in sound quality on headphones? Mainly how long each can go? The old nexus is terrible compared to SIII.
The new sound chip is really really good. Like really good. I use similar headphones comfortabley at about 25-35% volume, Clarity is great, good DAC.

As stated in the thread you linked, this does not affect headphone output, only the speakers on the tablet's output so it's not entirely relevant to the OP's question.

I'm finding its close to my HTC One coming through the headphones. Won't go quite as loud and clear but it definitely has impressed me. By far better than the first gen nexus 7!
Is the sound good because it's good? Or is the sound good because of how crappy the OG nexus was? The sound is the only thing I hate. Headphones and speakers. Makes me wonder if mine is defective. Or maybe I shouldn't expect more from a budget tablet. Would love to see more opinions.

We all know that N4 has a very bad camera..specially in low light photos..photos have very much dots..They seems good on mobile but when zoomed even a little its pathetic.
Was anyone able to find out what the issue is..? is it software or hardware..?
If its software related than is there any solution..?

Low light noise, no tap to snap picture, horrendous flash photos.
It's just not as good as the Galaxy S2+ I was going to sell.
The camera is the biggest disappointment for me as a one week N4 owner. I'm seriously considering selling the phone.
I tried the Moto X apk, which seemed to be a little better on the noise front, but I can't live with that aspect ratio. "Focal" was even worse than the stock camera.

Yea, I concur. I'm able to take great pictures with this phone. I'm not sure what the issue is. I mean I did come from the Evo 4G to this though, that phone had so many camera issues so I guess anything is better.
After reading around the subject, the only thing I've that gives me any hope is someone suggested using Snap Camera HDR app and fixing the ISO at 100. I'll be giving it a try in the hope of reducing noise in the pictures my N4 makes. Ta-ta, PmT

you dont have to tap the screen. long press the shoot button until its focused, then release. or in 4.3, you can hold down the down volume button then releae when focused.
btw some recent photos..
This phone sold for $200, of you want better camera you're going to have to shell out more money for other phones with better camera.
If you want less noise in low light shoot with iso 100. Or get n HTC One.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this problem, as I am fairly new to the Nexus4 and therefore uncertain if this is just normal.
Basically when I use the speaker phone, on the Nexus 4, the other side will struggle to hear me. If I use the HTC Desire S, a 2 year old handset, and do the same thing, then the sound is crystal clear. Is the quality of the Nexus 4 good? Do I need to send it in for repair?
I have tried the stock ROM 4.3, [4.2.2] Official Illusion v2.1 and [4.3]BeanStalk Build 4.308 and several different Kernels. Even though the results vary, they all produce sound that I would say is very substandard for a decent handset. I have done full wipe delvik/cache and factory reset.
Your response would be much appreciated.
