chrome not adjusting text - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Upon zooming into a page with a fair amount of text, chrome does not resize/reformat the text so that it fits within the screen on my G2. Is there a way to fix this or is this just how chrome works? There is no "autofit" option in the settings.

Anyone?

I've never had luck with Chrome for this either. Opera Mobile seems to work though.
I've had only moderate success reflowing with Firefox, but it includes a reading mode (book icon next to url if page has lots of text) which can make reflowing not necessary.

As far as I can tell chrome sucks at text reflow on all devices including N7. It isn't a G2 thing. It seems to extra suck with the xda site for some reason.

thanks for the comments
I have since switched over to using Maxthon. It reformats the text pretty nicely... but some things (like tab support) are not as good as in Chrome, IMO. What do people think about Maxthon?

About to give up on the browser

The browser is driving me nuts. Even the simplest of tasks are so frustrating. For instance if I do a google search, then click a link in the search, look at the page, then press back, google loads back up as far as the logo but none of the search results display until I refresh. Seems to only be google as other sites load ok when pressing back. This is ridiculous if you ask me. Then there is the keyboard lag when typing, like right now, I can type 3 or 4 words before any of it shows up. Trying out the latest dolphin hd browser now to see if it's any better. Keyboard lag is still there but at least google loads properly when pressing back.
Another annoyance is now there is no highlighting of a link when you tap it leaving you guessing and hoping you tapped in the right spot.
Not sure why it's so hard to get these little things right. Seems as if we've gone 1 step forward, 2 steps back.
Trying to keep the faith that these issues will be hammered out.
edit: And how could I forget that the damn browser can't even paint the screen fast enough when you scroll. My nook color blows this thing away in the browser department.
edit2: Text randomly fails to display when typing into text boxes. On the bright side though, I seem to have good luck with browser 720p on youtube.
Im having the same issues as you lol, i have opera and dolphinhd but i like the feel of the stock browser for some reason. I hope theyfix it soon.......and can i get a homepage button on the toolbar and not under the bookmark page lol.
I am on 3.1 and have the issue and it been driving me nuts as well. Having to refresh each time is a pain. I hope there is a fix for this soon.

I agree that the stock browser is the one of choice for me too but are having similar issues, although not major, still needs to be addressed.
I have tried the Dolphin browser and thought that I found the perfect browser until I tried to use citrix, this caused the browser to freeze and required a restart to get the browser working again
Also the browser seems to work great when its working but does tend to stop working if you use for approximately 10-15mins, well it did for me anyway. In this regard, the stock browser is far more reliable.
I am however optimistic and feel that the issues will be ironed out. So far I am very happy with the tablet in general.
I know what you mean about the google search problem. I found that disabling the Google Instant seeing in Settings/Labs helped.
the main annoyance for me is the dreadful keyboard lag - writing this response was painful!
you're right google shows up blank. Usually i dont go back and fourth like that. I just press and hold the search result and choose 'open in new tab', then close tab when im done.
I just keep the search results on one tab and view pages in new tabs.
Temp fix for blank page after back button in google search.
1. go to Google.com
2. select settings from upper right and click on search settings
3. Disable Google instant
I have tried this with Google instant on and I get the blank page when the back button is pressed.
With Google instant off I get my search results.
I hope this work for all
Also seem to eliminate most of the keyboard lag.

Thanks. This helped me. I also switched from the Asus keyboard to the standard Honeycomb keyboard. Even when docked this seems to make typing more responsive.
Typing in the opera mobile browser is much more responsive. It has its quirks, like always displaying mobile sites and having only flash lite but keyboard lag is reduced.
The newest dolphin that I just downloaded this morning is flying! Well, compared to what I'm used to with the stock browser. I believe it is version 5.0.1.
Anyone else having good luck with it?
Google issue is gone, typing seems fast etc.
I don't know if this is the proper thread, but I'll try since it recites various browser issues. I use Google Chrome on my desktop. I am extremely frustrated in my inability to duplicate the most rudimentary of reply functions found therein in the Android browser. These functions include the various Bold, Italic, Underline, Color, Font, etc., symbols shown in the reply boxes on this site, coupled with a total inability to cut and paste to get rid of the message at the bottom, or alternatively, to conveniently respond to various sentences or paragraphs in the original message. I am quite willing to concede that I simply missed how to do this. If anyone reading this can advise what I am not doing correctly, I would appreciate it. I tried the GMail browser this morning, but tried the stock browser yesterday. I recall the same problem with each. Thanks in advance.

yep you missed it
what you need its an ipad, its all done for you there.
Found it somewhere but it fix the lagging:
Instructions:
■Open the browser and type the following in the address
about:debug
■Nothing will appear to have happened; go to the menu button in the top right though and you will notice some extra menu items have been added.
Select Settings
■In the Settings menu select Debug on the left and uncheck Enable OpenGL Rendering to turn it off.
■You’re done.
that made things for worse for me...
things i tried that made it better..
don't use the asus keyboard, disable google instant search, plugins on demand, but still, the overall responsiveness of the device is not good. even loading a phone app like tapatalk it struggles to scroll smoothly, let alone rendering a web page.
Again, it's a real shame. I think they probably should have spent 3-6 more months getting things right as those of us seeking to exit the ios world are not going to be left with good impressions of android. I personally realize things will improve, but many will just try once and move on when they can't even type a basic response in the web browser. I would just about consider typing lag to make the device unusable.. it's that bad.

Opera Mobile 11.1 Update, preferred browser; Flash support and User Agent changeable!

I don't know if you guys know already, but Opera Mobile browser has been updated to 11.1, bringing along a whole lot of goodies, including flash support and user agent changes.
One thing I did notice was that typing lag on facebook seemed to have diminished, this was on desktop view, however still unable to type through some pages with "disqus"
I also found HD 720p videos on youtube has greatly improved! It might be just me, but frames seem to be a whole lot better as opposed to dolphin HD and stock browser.
Frames also drop a bit when viewing full screen 720p in browser, but its watchable.
A link to change log can be found here: http://my.opera.com/operamobile/blog/2011/06/30/opera-mobile-11-1-has-arrived
Temporary Fix to search bar always going to mobile search (must apply apply every time you reset Opera), Credit to iCracked
Hey everyone, I have found a fix for those of you frustrated with the old google mobile search. once you have switched UA to desktop, go to google.com manually, it should load up the full site. Now, using your finger, press and hold over the google.com (website's) search bar, to bring up the menu. Now select "add search engine" then go to your browser search bar and tap the little google icon to bring up a list of search providers and select the new google one, be sure to delete the old one to avoid confusion.

yes, I noticed that too, but I made some video comparisons with a few 720p videos that I watched on different browsers, and it seems Opera seems to perform better. Only my judgement though, and I'm judging on real world performance, not an in app browser test to judge what I can see.
I am running Honeycomb 3.1 stock unrooted
and its fast!!!! not the flash. everything else. no keyboards lag ... Google you need to learn something or maybe buy opera.

Opera is known to introduce its own optimizations, so that's why it's the best in terms of Javascript performance showing zero lag in text input. Finally, Flash support is available! How did they manage to do that without Honeycomb source code?
memory usage is pretty bad tho. 170mb right now on xda wtf?
I'm guessing that the Flash support doesnt work with the hacked/hulu Flash? Opera isn't picking up my Flash but it works in every other browser...
Seems to work well and without any redraw issues when scrolling quickly. Good spot.
nice...will have to give it a try when i get home.
Last night i did a second reset. trying to run my tablet without any downloads for the moment and monitoring performance.
disabled javascript, flash on demand, and the browser was beautifully working. opened up links super fast, then.........
i hit the back button (lower left on screen)...the page does nothing. i press again, and this time it takes me 2 pages further than i wanted...damnit
then when i go from landscape to portrait, the damn quick scroll guide (added in 3.1) is stuck in the middle of the page...
all of a sudden..it crashes. no message, no warning, just straight back to home page. wtf... shame, because i love the layout of the stock browser.
But. Opera..here i come
Loving it. It's REALLY quick, feels 4x quicker than the stock browser, and more intuitive too. I also just tried their desktop browser, Chrome killer or what!!!

Opera keeps on randomly zooming in on certain links when I click them. This is extremely annoying when using the touchpad as the mouse is plenty accurate enough.
Any way to turn this off?
Anyone successfully seeing flash videos in the new Opera using the 10.3 hulu hacked flash?
Google searches from the address bar or search box still use the mobile google site even with the UA set to desktop.
Did they also increase the font size on 11.1? The font size on previous version were much smaller then default browser, and dolphin HD

That's precisely why you don't see any redraw while scrolling. The stock browser uses less memory because it doesn't load the whole page, instead only loading the portion of the page that you are currently viewing. This translates to choppy performance because it has to reload the page every time you scroll up or down, but leaves more memory for the rest of the OS to work with.
I hate tabs on this thing. Hidden, huge and ugly.
Also it renders fonts badly (some letters are to close, some are too bold comparing to stock browser or Dolphin).
scrolling is jittery no where as smooth scrolling as default browser

I like them out of the way. They are hidden on my desktop that sports a full hd screen, I see no reason to keep them on sight on a "tiny" screen
Anyway, they didn't update Opera link, I was kinda hoping they will, so to get the most out of Opera 11.50....... oh well. One day.

Typing Lag Fix = opera Browser

I Own an Eee Pad Transformer and That Typing lag is Horrendous. Im going to be getting a Gtab 10.1 In the next few weeks and selling my Tab + Dock but thats beside the point. I Made this Thread just for an FYI. for Those who didnt know and wanted a Fix for Typing Lag, Opera Browser Mobile is Perfect. Using Opera Browser Mobile Feels Soo much smoother when typing with NO LAG what so ever. For those who are on ends, You should Try this out. Also an FYI, for people who Think Opera Mobile Just shows Mobile versions of websites, it doesnt. You can set it to a Full Desktop View Now with New Update.
Hope This Helps People out ~ Cheers ~
Edit: Opera Now Supports Flash. Tested and works! yay for updates. Also it Supports desktop without having to go to hidden menu.
"Only Thing Opera is missing is Flash Support."

LOL Yeah but they cant without Source since Opera is built Differently. Gotta wait for Google to release it, If they do. Theyre being picky with HoneyComb. still the Smoothness is worlds different. you'll notice the typing difference right away.
Look like the new version opera mobile 11.1 has a agent setting, support flash, and has a exit button. So no need to go into about:config to set the agent. Too bad the font is still pretty small compare to default and dolphin HD. I havent tried out 11.1 but with 11 there was still some lag when typing on this forum.

Strange. I Have no Lag. Maybe its because Im using Thumb Keyboard too. I also turned off all Auto Corrections and grammar corrections.
Been using Opera Mobile for a little while. Love this browser, was bothered by the lack of agent setting, but now that can be turned on. Also was able to watch Flash and that worked good.
Really like the browser alot.
I never had lag on my Opera, what settings did you have?

1) typing is indeed much better. no more blue highlights in text boxes which seems to be the cause.
2) text selection is steadier.. the cursor seems to pick the right position more accurately and without the real annoying cursor jumping.
Dislikes
1) when typing this response.. the typing indicator started right in the middle of the reply text box with no way to put it at the top line.
2) font is smaller than stock browser and dolphin HD
3) scrolling is not as smooth as stock browser and dolphin hd
4) loading pages is slower than stock browser and dolphin hd
5) no full screen viewing
6) bookmarks are not as easy to access like dolphin HD
with all that said.. it is such a relief to be able to type without lag and to be able to set the cursor more accurately. I'll stick to opera for now until dolphin or stock gets rid of the lag.

I am also using the thumb keyboard and have xda set to classic view. The lag comes and goes. There is major lag if I have music playing in the background with either default music player or player pro. This lag is on both my TF and 10.1. I havent tried out 11.1 yet, hopefully there lag is gone.
I just started using Opera and the typing is indeed much better. I think everything is crisper looking too. Everything in Dolphin HD seems soft and scrolling in both Dolphin and the stock browser is nothing to brag about. They may scroll, but content loads after.

[Request] Hcomb Browser Fix

The main app any tablet user uses is the Browser I'd assume and unfortunately its the weak spot on Honeycomb.
Viewing most desktop sites is very unbearable (try facebook, XDA, Google Plus) as the page lags, and text input is very difficult as well (huge lag)
Do any devs have any idea how to improve the speed on this stock browser in custom roms or so, I remember a kernel on the Xoom fixed things
This link has more info:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17353
If we could get a fix for this I could finally love my tab.
There is a lot less lag on the bonsai rom, but it's not completely gone. Ultimately google will have to be the to fix it.
theyve never mentioned it /acknowledged it
thats the worrying part
Ya know what actually, as,much as i dont like the look of the browser, opera mobile is the best functioning browser ive ever used. There is no browser lag, it render eveything exactly the way my desktop does. Im very suprised that google cannot mirror whatever opera mobile has done.
Ill give you an example of where opera finally got it right...
Try and do a search on xdas site and see what happens. It opens the text box for a second and then it drops the keyboard. Its never works and it is so annoying.
Now try it on opera mobile. Oh my god, it works!
It doesnt work on dolphin, firefox or any other browser ive tried. Opera mobile it works. Can a super sharp coder figure out a way to take whatever opera has in it and put it in the stock HC browser??
it`strange becouse in some forums is all ok, in other the text is very very slow :-(

I tried Opera and everything works great except two things. the first is that often times you will enter text in a text box, and then when you minimize the keyboard to click the submit button, it removes everything you just typed! I had this happen to me about 5 times and then I gave up and uninstalled it. The other issue is mainly a preference, but the tabs suck! Give me real tabs like the stock browser. opera and Firefox have a horrible tab implementation on Android.

Plus I am very tired of getting to the "mobile" version of the websites.
Its a 10 inch Tablet..
Google needs to give this thing a Desktop identity and load the desktop version of the websites. One thing Apple is doing right with the iPad.
Even better get rid of this Chrome Based Android Mobile Browser and put there the real Chrome.

even when I've manually set the useragent to a desktop browser, I still get kicked to the mobile versions of some sites. And sites like...google search, which should know better!
I've tested a bunch of browsers at this point and none of them are perfect. I think dolphin comes closest, but it definitely has little things that are annoying (such as it being way to easy to close the wrong tab)

Plus regular people cannot deal with such advance settings. I personally know 3 people they went with the iPad because of this.

I am a little confused. I don't have an issue with the browser or the typing...The pages load and scroll perfect and there is little to no lag at all on my typing. There can be a slight lag at times when i use the Keyboard/Dock but that is it.
Does anyone else have no issue?

I just cant win with honeycomb browsers.

The stock browser is my preferred browser because it has the best design and features (and the only one that can play 720p YouTube videos smoothly) but has too many glitches to be functional!
First off its the laggiest out of all of them making it almost impossible to type at any fast rate of speed. Second there is a ridiculous glitch that won't allow you to move the cursor by just tapping where you want it to go within the text, you have to actually drag the cursor to where you want it go. But like i said it looks the best, has the best features, formats the text the best, and plays 720p YouTube.
Opera is the fastest. It is the best for text editing and overall speed of browsing. It is extremely annoying though that it won't do things such as auto capitalize or just allow you to push enter to search rather than clicking on the page, and the very layout of the browser seems dated. It also won't play 720p YouTube videos. Opera seems to be the only one that will allow proper handling of HTML forms and text editing, which is very important for posting on the net and making your way through forums.
Dolphin is OK but it has one glitch i can not look past. I can not search from the little drop down menu within forums because it just glitches and closes. Similarly I can't use the login to websites function (such as xda) from the little embedded login on the main page. Its broken.
I guess the most usable is opera. But can some dev not fix the little things that are wrong with the stock browser? I would really prefer to use it instead. Im sure most of you will agree.

I can tolerate the stock browser for the most part. The only one thing I can't really live with is text editing. When I click in the middle of a word to correct it, the cursor doesn't jump when I pressed, it does for a second and then snaps across the screen to where it was previously. Then I have to grab the cursor and drag it to where I want. This gets old.
Sent from my microwave
Just tried both Firefox and Firefox beta and both we pretty laggy. While I could move the cursor to where I wanted by tapping, the browser had no arrow come up to fine tune the location! I could probably deal with this if the browser wasn't so laggy. And im pretty sure there is no flash support with firefox yet, back to the stock browser
On another note, I was able to tap my cursor whereever I wanted just now editing this text with the stock browser! Seems like a random occurance i guess.
Both Firefoxes are shocking, laggy slow and worse of all no flash support if I wanted that I'd have bought an iPad! The work around I use for text entry is to zoom it, bit of a pain in the butt n not perfect but it does sort out the glitch.
