At&ts acquisition of T mobile might be very good for Sprint

At&t's acquisition of Tmobile may very well be one of the best things that ever hapened to sprint, leaving only one low priced nation wide carrier in the country. I predict that millions of former tmobile customers will have no where else to go but Sprint. Anyone disagree / agree with my prerediction? (excuae poor writing skills)

What should Sprint do with Clearwire?

I dont havea clue. As I understand it, Sprint has plans of using its 800mhz spectrum for future 4g service. I don't know what they could possibly do with Clear's 2.5 GHZ spectrum.

Sprint is worth about $267.64, T-Mobile is more than they can afford pal.

If this merger goes anything like the AT&T/Cingular merger the combined new company is bound to lose a ton of subscribers. That merger was a clusterfudge and a half and is the reason I'm a Sprint customer now.

If I had a good chunck of money lying around I'd invest in Sprint as they have big plans for the future. Restating what someone above already said, AT&T aquiring T-Mobile is just going ot increase Sprint's number of subscribers, paired with their rumored and "unofficial confirmed?" lol if that makes sense - decision to move to LTE and finally topped with next weeks CTIA event where some REAL nice phones / tablets are expected to drop - Sprint is in for a subscriber boost. I'm on Sprint right now with my Epic 4G and had plans to possibly switch to t-mobile or At&t but now that At&t is buying Tmobile and will probably eliminate all Unlimited plans and sprint will get some actually nice phones that don't have a keyboard - I am definitely going to be sticking around! Oh and besides all that I just moved to West hills and now I have beautiful 4G coverage ALL through my house with 5 -7 Mbps down and 1 - 2 Mbps up So I'm one happy camper and its all about to get better when I upgrade the day Sprint releases their new phones to the public! Man waiting really pays off!
Any more opinions anyone?

Wow, you're quite lucky - or maybe I just wasn't so lucky. They screwed me around quite badly. I'm not going to turn this into a flame AT&T thread, but generally speaking I was with AT&T since the analog days and they made it impossible for me to continue to use them as a direct result of that merger. Took my 3 lines to Sprint and never looked back. Best wishes to any happy T-mobile users out there who are going to be converted if the feds approve this.

Sorry, I have to rant here for a minute...
1st, I had just bought a new phone on the AT&T blue side. When they wanted to migrate me to the "orange" billing system because I wanted to up my minutes they told me I'd have to buy another new phone and I wasn't eligible for an upgrade. I wound up unlocking my phone myself and using the orange sim in it anyway.
Also, at the time I had 3 phone lines in 2 different area codes. They told me the new billing system wouldn't let me do that and I had to change a phone number that I had with them for several years. I ended up having to split the one line off onto its own account which cost quite a bit more per month but had no choice at the time and was generally happy with my coverage and equipment otherwise.
I also regularly dialed international long distance @ 85 cents/minute which equated to several hundred dollars a month (over $700 one month) which I always paid on time and with a smile. Shortly after they migrated my account I had an emergency while traveling and desperately needed to dial international which I was no longer able to do. I called AT&T post haste and they told me "We're sorry, since you've been a customer less than 90 days we cannot permit you to dial internationally". I explained the situation that since migrating to the new billing system I had a new account number and provided my old account number for them to verify. They claimed there was nothing they could do and I could appeal to a manager which would take 7-10 business days. I wound up talking to a complete stranger about my situation who let me use his landline. We had no idea what it would cost him to dial international from his line, so I gave him $50 which he refused but I insisted he take it. I moved carriers within days of that ordeal.
Thats just no way to treat an 8 year loyal, multi-line, international dialing customer dealing with a life and death situation. Money was never the issue, terrible customer relations was. Thats why I want to wish all those poor TMO users good luck - I hope they don't have the same experience.

great 4 sprint but this is BAD 4 us, y. cause there would be NOTHING to stop sprint from RAISING their rates or eliminating the unlimited plan. at&t would be the only GSM cell company in the US. in a way it would be a MONOPOLY! out of the 4 top carriers, sprint was the cheapest followed by t-mobile. FCC NEEDS 2 SQUASH THIS DEAL! unless metro pcs gets more towers, mark my words WE WILL SUFFER!

According to a very well known site to me www.tmonews.com, the site states that At&t and T-Mobile agreed to join forces and will soon be working together. So what does this mean for us streak users? Feel free to post your thoughts and opinions in this thread.

im with att,but used to be with tmo...and its customer service/pricing/data usage... blew att out of the water ....now hearing this sucks

I can somewhat relate. I was with tmo for the past 7 years and I made the switch to at&t only a month ago because I wanted the streak. I agree that tmo had amazing customer support and their plans were pretty good as well, and to see both company's joining forces is not a bad thing in my eyes. I only hope that at&t will take in some of t-mobiles plans and offer it to us. To have the ability of 5GB data cap wouldn't be that bad and to not have to pay $10 bucks for an extra gig would be even better.

This is bad. It will allow carriers to do horrible things to their customers like no unlimited data. BAD BAD BAD.

I personally have been trying to convince the wife to change to AT&T or Verizon so welcome this change.

It's good IMO. T-Mobile wanted to be bought, it was going to happen eventually. Instead of being purchased by Sprint and having to be converted to CDMA, they'll be purchased by ATT and will insist in increasing network density for 3G and LTE.
It does leave a possible void in the discount arena, but Sprint and MetroPCS can fill that. T-Mobile lost 400K subscribers last quarter, something had to happen.
I wouldn't mind seeing Sprint gobble up Metro (like techs in cdma) and giving us 3 solid choices. Having spotty service carriers like T-Mobile helps no one.
I did read that in the short term ATT and TMobile towers would go dual mode so each group of customers would get better service. So, right from the start that's a positive.
I'm going to be mad if ATT treats this as anything more then a means to resolve there density issues.

Do not like. I am on att because its way cheaper to pay my parents to be on their plan than to have my own. I figured once I start making more money I would switch to tmobile because they have good phones and impose less carrier restrictions. Now they are joining att who (would like) to rule their plans like tyrants. Now I dont know what I'm going to do.

That's a shame....Springfield Missouri had a HUGE T-Mobile customer support center open up a couple years ago. Must be 2-300 people working there.

Also, bad for t-mobile users, and wireless users in general, because, you can
bet Verizon will be right up to gobble up Sprint (t-mobile +at&t +gsm...Verizon + sprint + cdma). Then there will only be two wireless providers in the USA.
Of course, we all know, that they won't get together to screw the end users LOL.
It's funny, we (USA) spent a lot of money in an anti-trust case in the early 80's
to break up "ma-bell", because they were a monopoly, and some 30 years later, they have just about put themselves back together again.

I am a TMo user and been there with them since the day i came to US(Almost 8+ years).
Even though I can only use Streak with EDGE speed with TMo, I am okay with it.
But once the network merge is complete, would that mean that with TMo simcard in Streak, I now will have 3G speed?

this is actually a good thing. att said this pushes their network 5 years in development, and they will have 60mbit 4g lte coverage to 95% of americans. users on both networks will have access to all 3g gsm bands. and with the new capacity load capabilities, att can lower their prices to compete more with verizon. i actually do see verizon buying sprint too.
i was thinking of was actually thinking of selling my streak and buying a samsung infuse 4g. its a faster phone with an almost as large but higher quality screen and better cameras and is a "4g" phone but its hspa+ not lte and with this announcement, im going to wait till later this year when the lte phones come out.

For me it's a GOOD THING!
I'm 99% about THE PHONES. If this merger opens up the TMOus 3G/4G bands to ATT users, then the more progressive/higher end TMO european phones would become available here sooner. That's a great thing imo.

i think people need to look at this from a business point of view . If At&T does end up buying Tmobile this will be bad for the customer, because that is one less company At&T has to fight a price war with and being that att and Tmobile are the only GSM networks out there that makes them the only player in the GSM arena .
everyone needs to remember the more options out there the better that will keep each company in check and fight for every customer out there with better prices and plans .
some will say will it will make my signal better and make the network faster and make things happen alot faster as far as 4g becoming the stranded thing . i for one dont care about speed if i am going to end up paying like crazy for KB's of data att is starting to nickel and dime the customer and this is coming from an att customer

AT&T has several call centers around the bay area so I doubt they will go over seas. It would be unfortunate for the Springfield employees to lose their jobs so hopefully AT&T will just bring them on board. There is no way they could handle that many additional accounts without adding employees.
That said, being a call center person myself job stability is never guaranteed when dealing with tech products. It comes with the territory.

VZW LTE vs. Sprint WiMAX

So my girlfriend picked up a Thunderbolt, and I have to admit I'm pretty jealous of the 4G speeds and coverage she's getting. In our building, I don't get any Sprint signal at all in the basement (I always roam on VZW), meanwhile she's speed-testing at 18mbps. In fact pretty much everywhere we've gone in the area, she gets LTE coverage both inside and out, much unlike the EVO's pretty-much-outside-only WiMAX coverage...
I've found WiMAX to work pretty well if I'm outside or in my car, and I'm sitting perfectly still. Of course I can't leave it enabled unless I use my extended battery, or else the phone will be dead in short order.
I guess Sprint's 9 months of being the only provider with "real" 4G phones was nice while it lasted, but VZW is really kicking ass now when it comes to 4G speed and coverage, to the point where I'd say they're pretty much the only player in town.

Well, yeah, your lady is going to get blistering speeds because there might be 1000 people in your whole city with LTE right now. Verizon says it expects 5-12Mbps on "loaded cells." I just touched 10Mbs in Manhattan -- on a loaded net. Not saying WiMax is perfect; far from.
Here's the thing: it doesn't matter to me if you go to VZW -- in fact you're one less connected user on WiMax, so I'll be incrementally faster. If you're gonna go to Verizon, do so once you see what performance of both the net and the device is going to be -- in real world, saturated network situations.

Realistically even when the network gets loaded itll still be faster than wimax. Just like with twice the users the 3G is better also. It just is what it is.

Im not willing to pay verizons prices...thats all it comes down to for me

Same thing here. I am ok living with sprints lesser service for the price difference.

The frequencies Verizon has for LTE are fundamentally better than what Clear/Sprint are using for WiMax, at least in terms of building penetration. The higher frequencies do have some advantages, but to me they're *completely* negated by the fact that I go from an "Excellent" 4G signal in the parking lot at work to alternating between "Poor" and "No signal" as soon as I walk in the building. VZW could put Wimax on their frequencies, or Sprint could put LTE on their frequencies, and either way, VZW would win. If Sprint deploys LTE on the Nextel frequencies, we'll have a much more even race.
That said, I like what I pay for Sprint and (especially with the AT&TMobile thing) I don't want to see Sprint fail. I'm sticking with them for now. But 4G on Sprint has been very, very disappointing. There is a point in time -- yet to be determined for me -- when I'll suck it up and pay VZW's prices if Sprint can't improve the 4G network in a major way.

This isn't necessarily true.
As a standard, WiMax has potential for higher speeds than LTE. Significantly higher -- like 30% higher. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_wireless_data_standards
The question is, implementation, as always. Of course, it may be a moot point, as Sprint may cut bait from Clear (because of their mismanagement) and go with their LTE plans with LightSquared in tow.
My point remains, leaving Sprint now, based on VZW's LTE speeds NOW vs what they may be when fully-loaded might be a grass-greener-on-the-other-side move. And you know how that usually ends up...

My house is small and my work has thin walls, I get awesome 4g speed pretty much all the time. I guess if where your at you don't have the same results switch. You'll probably be happier.

Yea and 10 times out of 10 we will NEVER see wimax speeds that high.. not if Clear is responsible for deploying it. And honestly the grass is greener not only interms of 4G speeds, but coverage and 3G speeds as well. In terms of VZW vs Sprint you pretty much get what you pay for. In terms of data I rarely even use the evo anymore. Turning on my wimax is pointless honestly unless im close to a tower. Even if VZW's speeds get chopped in half, which I doubt, itll still be faster than wimax here. The biggest factor is if you look at how many towers VZW has here as compared to Sprint, it makes sense as to why you can get LTE pretty much everywhere you go in in Metro Atlanta as compared to Wimax.. where once you leave downtown you're not really guaranteed to get it at all.

But 89.99 + 20% discount for unlimited 4G with Verizon was only $10 more than what i was paying with Sprint..
I love Sprint to death, but until they use their 800MHz spectrum for 4G then i'll be staying with Verizon..

I just made this exact post in another thread lol. VZW is NOT that much more than Sprint anymore. Especially since Sprint made the $10 premium data mandatory for all smart phones. And im telling you now, if VZW does decide to make that promo that they ran for the any mobile for the same price, its gonna get ugly.

VZW is not much more for an individual user, but with a family plan its a lot more. Total for my 4 smartphones was 60 more a month. Not worth it, especially getting 10Mbps down everywhere I go. 15 vs 10 is just not a big deal to me.

my plan three evo's after tax and 22% discount is 167, verizon for two phones not three after tax and discount was 189!
But like it was said if vzw did anytime any mobile. I might consider it. but then again 90% of people we know are on verizon so maybe it doesn matter.

these are the same customers that complained about the $10/fee
they aint going to pay $10-20 more ...
i agree sprint wimax signal is a joke.. i am in DFW (one of the major oginal wimax cities).. and it sucks!... so much so that I use a ROM that does not even have wimax support!.
i sure hope that sprint has real plans to fix this asap with wimax...not lte.

OP here. I switched from VZW to Sprint for the EVO, so I knew what I was coming from. When we got WiMAX here (DC/Baltimore area) it was at first very spotty, and it's still moderately spotty. I suppose I was expecting to see the same from VZW's LTE offerings, at least for the next year or so, but I was surprised to see how... good it is. I'm sure once the network gets a little more saturated the speeds won't be as good, but still, having 10-12mbps everywhere on VZW is quite different from having 3G in most places and 4G in a few select places like I'm used to now with Sprint.
I'm not saying I'm going to switch back to VZW... I hated the way they nickel-and-dimed everything... I like Sprint as a company much better. I just hope maybe they'll at least increase the back-end WiMAX speeds a little so they can be a bit more competitive with VZW LTE at least with speeds (I know the penetration isn't going to get much better...)

I will never go back to verizon for any reason. I don't really download that much on my phone that I can't do when I have wifi. Since having 4g on pretty much kills the battery, I leave it off most of the time. I love the evo, and if sprint improves things then it's even better.

i have sprint and want out. 3g is more like whatever is slower than 1x and unless you're in a major market in first lte rollout you won't have it for quite a while, making you stuck on 3g. Wimax hasn't supported many areas and the rollout was slow. research before committing

i have sprint and am leaving as well. thinking about the note 2 on tmobile but really want an exynos 5250 phone so we'll see if i can hold out till the gs4. either way i'm done with sprint and their crappy network.

I'm on sprint, I have the og epic 4g, wimax was really slow until the devs here figured the epics radio was buggy thanks to samsung. Now I can flash the Nexus modem on to my phone and wimax is amazing, way faster than before and pretty consistent. The evo LTE is having the same problem with their radio right now I believe. Anyways for heavy data users Sprint is great, but it really depends on where you live, figure out what's best for you because crappy data speeds are about as good as throttled data speeds. I hope Samsung does a good job on the note 2 modem.

My experience with Sprint was great till recently. Speeds are horrible and I've had to call twice in two weeks about texts not going through. My wife isn't receiving calls on her Epic Touch. I would seriously reconsider your decision. We will be headed to At&t asap and I plan on picking up a Note 2.

Sprint's data speeds really suck, especially inside buildings.
You might want to get a hotspot and test it out for a month.
Go around the areas you frequent and run speed tests.
Or buy a cheapo Sprint phone off CL and get a month of service. This way you can use it for as long as you wish and then cancel if you don't like the service since you aren't in a contract.

I have yet to ever meet someone who's uttered the phrase, "I'm satisfied with Sprint." Their service problems go back at least 12 years because that's when I used to sell phones with Sprint being one of the carriers.

Welp, maybe we're not meeting in person, but consider this a virtual introduction.
It just so happens I've been with Sprint for the last twelve years & I'm satisfied with Sprint. I'll even go as far as to say, I've had the best experience with Sprint of any carrier. Good quality cellular & data service, customer service has been impressive, & pound for pound, none of the big dogs can beat their pricing (at least not yet). I've had both Verizon & AT&T. Can't speak for T-Mobile, but I'm still with Sprint after 12 years.
And I may be out of line in saying this, but I'm guessing not too many folks go to the retailer specifically just to tell them how great & satisfied they've been with their service or provider, regardless of carrier. Unless they're renewing or accessorizing, they're there because they have a problem with their phone or with the service, with their bill, or with their current carrier/provider & they are looking to switch.
Edit: Sorry OP. To address your question, if I haven't already made it obvious, I do think Sprint is the best choice.

Don't know about U guys but unlimited data feature of sprint is HUGE to me. Right now I have a sprint MiFi and am really ALWAYS satisfied with data speeds....5-9mbps which is fine with me.
Believe me if I had to spend one minute on their 3G I'd bolt.
I have $35mo unlimited data on their MiFi.
Right now while waiting for SGN2 to drop I'm also on prepaid TMobile $30mo 100min talk unlimited data unlinited text.

Sprint is amazing and has some of the best customer service I've ever experienced.

Listen to this guy. Seen replies where sprint can be great or plainly suck ass. Seemms it's location dependent so listen to this guy!

I've had Sprint for about 8 years and I can't stand it.
3G data is miserable. They are going with 1900Mhz LTE network, bad building penetration as opposed to Verizon's 900Mhz. . I'm probably going to Verizon, they rock in Los Angeles. Yes, I'm going to deal with the Devil.

I only pay about $50+tax for the SERO plan, if I switch I will end up paying twice as much for similar plan. SERO is like 500mins, unlimited text and data. I read on my bill it said unlimited data roaming also, but I never have tried that. Still it's too cheap to switch over for me.

UTStarcom probably the absolute worst time to compare sprint with the network upgrades taking place. Living in an area that is nearing halfway completion I can tell you yeah,it's long over due (though they are less then a year behind att's start to their still ongoing lte rollout)
Currently I have both Sprint and Att phones.
Call quality for me in Dallas is awesome...and let is comparable if not faster.
We still have the same issues we have always had on att...and speeds slowing compared to when lte went live in Dallas last October
Both have made huge customer service improvements and both are actively working on their network
That being said...check s4g4u.com for speculated upgrade schedule, compare prices w/usage habbits and make a decision.
For me...the unlimited data is a no brainer...but I live in a strong sprint market

i agree with you guys. just got done talking to tmobile. i think ill get the galaxy note 2 with them. idc that its only hspa+ 42mbps, that holds its own with the lte networks now anyway. plus, theyll cheaper than what i pay sprint

Just check your local area, graba phone from both and prepaay to test it out.
I hate ATT, because I pay 160 a month for 2 phones, and could be paying 100 with someone else.

Sprint sucks. I've been with all 4 major carriers. For where I live in my state I'd put it in this order.
1. Verizon Wireless
2. T-Mobile (Now true unlimited, NO throttling)
3. at&t (A lot of dropped calls)
4. Prepaid carriers
5. Sprint (Unusable data speeds) and I had wimax with them, it wasn't impressive, maybe 1mb download speeds, for 4G that sucks. I would get some of my texts and calls really late. Like a day or two later. I was like wtf? This voicemail was from 3 days ago? I will never go back to Sprint.

Verizon vs T-Mobile

Here, service is comparable coverage wise and getting even better by TMobile as time goes by. Verizon has had good LTE coverage for several years. I don't travel much any more so that is not as big of an issue as it has been in the past.
I'm currently on Verizon and have been with them for a long time. My current agreement is up on Oct 22 and I am going to get the GN3 to replace my still very usable HTC Rezound. So near the end of Oct I will make the change.
So my options are open. Stay with Verizon or switch to T-Mobile
Pros for VZW
o Existing Service
o Existing Emp Discount
o "free" calling with many family members using VZW
o Solid service for both data and voice.
Cons VZW:
o Past devices GN2 for example were crippled
o Locked bootloader
Pros for T-Mobile
o Emp discount available
o Unlocked bootloader assumed
o Devices tend to be full (not crippled like VZW does)
o Less expensive service plan
o Better device upgrade plan.
Cons T-Mobile
o could cost other family members more for calls (don't really care)
o Unknown Service available though it looks good
o ???
I am really looking at porting my number over and moving to T-Mobile...
Curious what others are doing.

dont go to tmobile man. i live in cincinnati and friend has that has htc one x on tmobile and service is terrible. my bionic im using now is faster on 4g then his if it can ever even get 4g. I wont leave verizon cause the lte is so fast and reliable

Located in Phoenix which most likely has better coverage than many cities..
Comparison chart for Phoenix.... I get better than what is listed on Verizon.

It depends on the area. If Phoenix is like Detroit, then you definitely want T-Mobile. T-Mobile absolutely destroys everything else in my area.

I have had very good service with T-Mobile in the Phoenix area. T-Mobiles LTE in phoenix is very fast. Here are a few speed test screen shots taken from the Chandler, AZ area. (Only one of the speed tests were taken with GPS on Lat 33.28753 Lon -111.97256)

Until you drive through a rural area late at night and break down, with T-mobile you will be hitchhiking for miles.

that is surprising. tmobile sucks bad here

I do agree that some remote locations does have poor data speeds on T-Mobile but I have never had an issue were I could not make a call. I travel a lot between Phoenix and San Diego and have never had a problem (Other areas may be different). I believe T-Mobile has come a long way in Phoenix. I made the jump from Sprint 1 ½ years ago when T-Mobile started offering their unlimited data and have been happy with them since. Every person uses there phone differently and I am just giving some information about my personal experience with T-Mobile.

I second this - even if data is gone voice calling is not. I have switched to T-Mo - because it is very workable. There is cheaper family plans. There is greater device freedom. Please do not think any device will work. One has to look for the 1700 / 2100 mhz bands - notably - the S4 Google Version and possibly the Nexus 5 will have them.
Now to devices on Verizon - you know how restrictive that is.

It really depends on what kind of price you can get with your discount. I found an awesome discount for T-Mobile (no activation fee, $50 credit, 10% off service), so the Unlimited Everything plan from T-Mobile is $36 cheaper per month (Before the phone is paid off, then it becomes $57 cheaper) than what I'd pay for Verizon's 4GB plan. At that price it's crazy to go with Verizon, despite their generally great voice/data network (IMO). Anything is an improvement over Sprint in Colorado for me, at least
If the difference in price is small, maybe $10/mo or so, I'd opt for Verizon. If the difference is $20+ I'd opt for T-Mobile. If money were no issue, I'd opt for Verizon.

WIFI calling on tmobile is a plus.

I live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida and left Verizon for Sprint (horrible choice when it came to coverage) but now I'm with T-Mobile and could not be happier.
If T-Mobile has coverage in your area I say make the jump. I can't stand Verizon's politics! I believe they were the only carrier in the world to lock the bootloader on the Galaxy S3.

Wifi calling is a bit of underrated feature. You can travel abroad, connect to wifi and use your phone to call, send SMS, etc... Used it on my vacation in Roatan and it worked pretty well.

I agree, WiFi calling works great. I have found it very useful in the large office building where I work. Cell service in my office has been horrible with all 3 of the carriers that I have been with over the years. Now that I have WiFi calling I have great signal all over the building.

The rezound is an old phone with an old antenna. I had a gs4 that I sold so I can get the Note 3. Currently, I am using a galaxy nexus, and the speeds are not the same. The GS4 speeds are much faster and more consistent. In places I had LTE with the S4 the Galaxy Nexus has 3g speeds. You may want to check on that before making the switch. If you are doing it to save money and speed is no concern, then T-Mobile is your best bet.

Hey, if any of you feel like it, can you tell me about t-mobile's wifi calling? Is that something they specifically endorse and works with your phone's phone number? Heard of wifi calling before but never used in conjunction with T-mobile.

Wifi calling is a home grown Tmo app that lets you place calls over a wifi connection instead of cellular network. Works great if you get a spotty signal. Downside is it's proprietary like Samsung's TW apps. Once you flash to another ROM you lose it.
To the OP, all I can do is reiterate the point about Tmo coverage in your area. Coming from ATT I love Tmo's prices but I find a lot more deadzone here in NYC. Seems to be a problem with penetration. In my apartment I get 87 dbm ATT signal but zero Tmo without a repeater attached to the window. Many buildings in midtown Manhattan have zero signal which is weird since it should be a well blanketed area. Leaving the city is a crap shoot. But then again it forces me to live life like its 1999 ;p

wow, that's really nifty, thanks. Does it affect battery life when it's on? Or in other words does it prevent deep sleep when its running? I'm not sure how it keeps listening for calls over wifi.
