Hi!
I'm totally new to Nexus 4. I'm on 4.3 and yesterday unlocked bootloader and rooted. Everything works.
Today I booted in fastboot just to see CWM. On exiting it warned me about possible root lost. I answered YES.
So now I lost root. I still have SuperSU but when I run it I get message that no binaries installed and SU can't install them and I need to reroot phone...
I tried to download chainfire 1.65 zip and flash it CWM - same result...
Any hints would be appreciated!

Ok, I'll try.
But am I accessing CWM properly? Do I have to go through fastboot?
My last phone had button combination to boot straight into recovery. I don't see such option in Nexus 4.
Thanks again!

Is there an option in your current ROM to reboot into recovery? If not, power off the device, then hold down the volume up-down and the power buttons. I tend to forget these button combinations, but I think this is the one that will lead you to fastboot. From there, navigate with the volume buttons and OK something with the power button.

Sorry I forgot to give tech details: I run stock ROM + kernel, just rooted and unlocked fastboot.
So yes, this is the way I use to access recovery: through fastboot.
Last time while exiting CWM I selected NO to last question about trying to fix root and my root is still here
Thanks for help again!

Glad to hear that. If it's OK, leave it that way, it won't cause any harm.
If you want to try TWRP, go to the Play Store and download the GooManager application. Grant it superuser permission, then hit the menu button at the upper-right side of the screen, right under the clock. From there, select "Install OpenRecoveryScript" and it will download and flash the latest TWRP on your device. After that, reboot to recovery to check if it's working.
I just went throught the same thing
I just unlocked my phone and flashed the latest CWM recovery and then the latest SuperSU zip; and all was fine. But whenever I was exiting from CWM recovery, it said "Possible root access loss" and if it can "fix it". Whenever I say "Yes" I lose root access; and when I select "No" the root privileges stayed. I could have lived with that but I thought screw this **** and flashed the TWRP recovery. This one doesn't say anything about losing access; all's cool.
But I still want to know what CWM was trying to do. It was trying to "fix" /system/bin/su and losing root access. Anybody?

Unlocked the bootloader with Google Nexus 7 Toolkit 1.1 but the device will not gain root no matter what options I try. I cannot get root, I cannot boot into CWM Recovery, and I am not sure what the issue is.
I am running the stock ROM, I simply wanted to unlock it and root it for a couple apps that I needed.
Anyone point me in the right direction? How do you even boot into Recovery, so that I can try and install root from there?

boot into the bootloader/fastboot then select recovery. then flash the su binaries or any custom rom while in recovery. thats all. anyways, i highly recommend twrp recovery over cwm.

How? none of the toolkits actually gain root. For a "developer" platform, this one is harder to root than any of the HTC or Moto phones I have had...
I can't even get into Recovery. On my Rezound, you hold the volume down and hold power and it boots into recovery, I have no idea how to do it on this device...

do not use toolkits, ever. you are just shooting yourself in the foot. learn to do it yourself, its much easier with any nexus. fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash a custom rom or the su binaries in your new recovery, reboot. that is all. to get into the bootloader/fastboot, power on holding volume down and the power button.

my nexus 7 was rooted 4 minutes after i got home with it. that is not difficult at all.

adb reboot bootloader
Make sure you re-enable USB debugging on your tablet after unlocking.
It might get turned off after wiping data.

Probably because the toolkit u used didn't create a symbolic link to su in /system/xbin.
Try an other kernel or learn how to do it yourself

Hi, wanted to ask why am i unable to enter clockworkmod after updating to 4.1.1 official firmware. I've already uninstall and reinstall clockworkmod a few times and the problem is still there. Will appreciate the feedback in the forum. Thanks in advance.

Just follow the below steps :
if you are still getting the stock recovery 3e follow these steps :
1. When flashing CWM through odin untick the "Auto Reboot" option within Odin.
2. Flash CWM.
3. When done , press power & volume up ( the one apart from power button ) until the Samsung logo appears, then leave both buttons.
4. CWM will appear.
5. Choose "Reboot System now "
6. You will get a new screen with an option mentioning something like " disable flash recovery , press it & reboot.
7. Now if you get back to pressing power & volume up you will have a permanent CWM.
Then you can install root through CWM.

You dont require CWM anymore to root, you can root using exynos exploit patch apk with just a click

Thanks for the update
Got a question. I lost root after the 4.3 ota update. Is it possible to get it back without losing everything on the tablet again? I was running SuperSU and OTARootkeeper at the time. When I got into OTARootkeeper is says the su file is there, but when I click restore root it seems not to be able to. I am not a super power user. I used WUGs tookkit to unlock it and root it in the first place. Also does this mean I lost unlock also?
Thanks!
I was in the same situation after installing the update through custom recovery. I remained unlocked. I used Wugs toolkit to root and install custom recovery (TWRP). In recovery I installed Chainfire's updated SuperSu zip. After booting back up, I had root and custom recovery. Search for SuperSu v1.43.

No, you do not lose data after flashing a recovery. Chainfire leased SuperSU 1.5 today.

Flashed 4.3 and lost root. I have downloaded the latest SU to my N7 and how am unsure how to go about flashing the ZIP since I no longer have access to custom recovery.

Ok opened up Wugs Nexus Root toolkit. Let it update everything it wanted to and then then told it to root. I was indeed still unlocked and it went ahead and reestablished root without losing anything. I updated OTA RootKeeper afterward and all seems happy.
Thanks!

OK got one crazy issue. I root but sometimes I lose it and have to reboot to get it back. SuperSu can't write the binary. Every time I open it it wants to write the binary but can't seem to. After a reboot Otarootkeeper say root is there. Then later it will be gone and I have to reboot to get it back.

I have the same issue, used Wugfreshs Toolkit to root after 4.3, on reboot i have no root.
Everytime i reboot from recovery, i get this error message. I can either choose, yes fix root, or no reboot now. On 4.3 pacman, tried flashing supersu 1.65, tried updating Superuser binaries through recovery with SuperSU, and im still getting this. Any other way to fix this?
Say no. You won't lose root. I can't remember why that shows up, but just choose no.

When i updated to 4.3 i started getting this. So i unrooted and re rooted, and the error was gone. Then titanium backup started telling me my su binaries needed to be updated, so i updated with supersu pro, and the error message came back. I know it seems harmless, but one in a while i have issues with apps that require root. Nothing major, just curious if theres a way to fix it.
Im curious, what happens if you click yes?

Hello all, I apologize in advance if this is a no brainer answer but I'm new to the idea of rooting my phone and am curious on something.
Can I just root my device to gain some of the functional advantages and not have to flash a ROM? I may consider something down the road but I'm curious about just rooting it so I can do some tings that I can't do otherwise.
Thank you in advance to anyone willing to answer!
Yup...

My personal preference:
Download TWRP 3.0, SuperSU 2.52, and freeza's BeastMode kernel. Place BeastMode and SuperSU 2.52 on your phones SD card.
Using Odin on a PC, place the TWRP.img file in the PDA slot. Unchecked auto reboot, boot phone into download mode, and plug it into the PC. Select "start." Once TWRP has successfully flashed (should only take a few seconds, but give it 30 seconds, to be sure the process is complete). Once you're certain that the flash is complete, unplug the phone from the computer, and pull the phones' battery. Reinsert the battery, press and hold the home button, and the volume up button. While continuing to hold them, press the power button. The phone should boot into TWRP, and you can release the buttons. From within TWRP, flash the BeastMode kernel, and SuperSu 2.52, that you previously downloaded. Reboot your phone. You are now stock odexed rooted.

No it doesn't have to be that version but the official SuperSU thread will be the place to learn which version you should flash. And you MUST flash the kernel BEFORE you flash SuperSU. Do not flash superSU before flashing the root permissive kernel. That's the only thing that wasn't specifically pointed out in the instructions above.
