It's working again! Even after getting my drm keys lost, BE2 is working after the 4.4 update! still having BL unlocked, running stock kernel not rooted
I was hoping for this after reading this tweet from DooMLoRD some time ago.
Anyone else confirm it? If so, my bootloader will remain unlocked after rooting KitKat.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk
Works. Unlocked bootloader, 10.5.A.0.230 Generich Schweiz and DooMLoRD's advanced stock kernel -> link
even in movies?
So we can use any custom kernel and bravia engine works?

will this only work if you are previously unlock the bootloader then upgrade to KitKat
or
will it also work if you unlock the bootloader after you upgrade to KitKat ?

More sounds like as long as you have 4.4, DRM stuffs like BE2 will work anyway. Awaiting for confirmation from devs.
maybe someone who claims it to be working can post before and after pictures of BE? although it can be easily done with PS, im sure no one here is immature enough to pull of something like that.
bump up!!
m really interested in this.... devlprs pls confirm
How can I know is working?
Upgrade to 4.4 and see if there's a difference in picture quality with bravia on and off.

correct me if I'm wrong .. but I think Bravia engine is a post-processing system .. so it doesn't really matter how you took the picture ..
you can actually notice some (subtle) changes happening when you look at the picture at Album with BE on ..
the same goes with Video ..
posting pictures here would not make any different, because the raw data is the same ..

You're both wrong. I didn't talk about taking pictures but on taking screenshots. It's different when u use screenshot option, u collect information in real time from ur screen so BE2 effects will be visible on screenshoot image. Take screenshot (in xperia album app) with on and off and compare it on ur PC.
There are a few things flashed to TA so it's possible, but wouldn't that work only if you flash using Emma?
As seus and pc companion don't work with unlocked bl.
The custom ftf around don't flash anything to ta.
I relocked bootloader and restored my Ta so can't say what it did as I wasn't paying attention, might be worth experimenting with.
Just a quick musing.
If it has restored drm, then I wonder if unlocking would improve camera quality on custom roms.

I'd guess that it's removed the DRM checks from BE2 etc rather than restoring the DRM keys to the TA partition. I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem likely that the unique DRM keys could be generated and pushed to the TA partition by an update.

Bringing some bad news for those who already unlocked their bootloader.
But sony confirms bad image quality on z3 and z3 compact on unlocked bootloader due to DRM keys (some noise reduction algorithms and other may be lost.

Just a heads up, this has always been the case with previous Xperias.
I know. I just want to let the people know.
In my opinion, there is no such a ROM worth to broke camera functionality.
If people just want to root their Z3, do they still need to unlock the bootloader?
My Z1 is rooted and the bootloader is still locked.

For now, only root methos is with unlocked bootloader. We will need to wait for a while to have proper root with locked bootloader.

So what ? Z3 compact is in the list, but unlocking BL on Z3c broke functionality anyway. See the photos on xperiablog. So it doesn`t make any sense at all...
I`m so upset
BIONZ processing algorithm is replaced with a generic algorithm that reduces the quality. The issue was the same on the Z1 on pre-4.3 firmware.
Sony will fix this later, I hope.

but previously when z3 is not in the list, i try z3 compact, which still works. the code given is the same for both.
I don't own a Z3/Z3c but if it uses the TA partition to store the DRM keys, then Backup TA should be used before unlocking the BL.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292598
However, the Backup TA team did not yet included Z3/Z3c in the list of supported devices (see the above thread).
You may want to ask there if the tool works for Z3/Z3c as well.
If it works, you will be able to restore the DRM keys after.
But, I'd rather wait for a root exploit that doesn't need you to unlock the BL...
That tool requires root so the Z3/Z3c isn't going to be supported until we get a root exploit. Everything depends on that right now.

It's sure Backup TA would work properly, but the problem is that Backup TA needs root too.
That's why we need an exploit first.
Hello everyone, I was looking at this device as a new toy. However, unlocking the bootloader for me is a must with any device I buy. I have yet to own a Sony. Can anyone tell me how big of a difference is the camera once you unlock the bootloader? Is it a small difference or a major issue? Thanks in advance!

On xperia z3 is MAJOR. I would advise to wait for proper root method, and support from TA backup app to backup your DRM first, and then to test your self.
This way, if you dont like it, you can restore your DRM with TA backup.

So, what do you guys think about this update? Is it really worth it? Curious to know.
The biggest reason for me to change was to get Remote Play to link with my PS4. Also, the applications button is now shifted to the middle of the bottom edge. Other than that, I haven't noticed any huge changes that blew me away.
Remote Play is pretty cool though, tried it out for a little bit last night and it was good enough to play Call of Duty campaign mode.

Well, technically, it's not such a big deal, to swap kernels/ramdisk with an unlocked bootloader. It's a simple edit. But, at this point, it would mean unlocking bootloader, and losing DRM keys (still not sure what functions besides some lost advanced camera functions, not that anybody uses the camera anyhow except for skype).
Under the old rooting, it used an exploit to modify ramdisk, (and install the necessary apps), without unlocking bootloader via an exploit.
As for me, I will wait a couple weeks and see if there's a new exploit. If not, well, I will do the above method.

Basically DRM keys are used to see if you have unlocked the device (in the past). So mainly for Sony to check if your warranty is still valid.
There is a tool that will backup your DRM keys though, and can restore it too. You just need root for that (just downgrade, root, backup keys and upgrade again) Just Google Xperia DRM backup and you're bound to find out
I've had this phone a little while now and I'm itching to root it. There's nothing wrong with it, I just really want to get into the code and do some modding. But there doesn't seem to be any root solution available right now.
So I thought I'd start this thread so we could discuss any rooting tips and ideas you all might have.
First I should probably mention all the potentially dodgy rooting solutions out there. Google "root xa1" and you get many results that offer methods to gain root access on our phone.
I confess I haven't tried any of them but that's because they all look suspicious. Some were written before the phone launched, some require you to download unknown software (I'll keep my PC virus-free, thanks), some even go so far as to feature a fake comment section with people saying it works.
I have no desire to stick malware on either my PC or my phone so I'm steering well clear of those.
The XZs launched at the same time as the XA1 and there seems to be a solution available for that. This is a thread by @zlRampageSlz with details: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xzs/how-to/tutorial-step-step-guide-to-gain-root-t3612624
It looks like the best solution is to unlock the bootloader (making sure to back up your TA partition first!), flash a modified kernel (otherwise the camera takes green pictures), flash a recovery image and then flash Magisk.
Where do we get this modified kernel? Where do we get the recovery image?
I have no idea, sadly. This is all way beyond my area of expertise. I'm a themer, not a developer.
But if anybody knows better than me, please post here.
This is a great phone, let's work together so we can get it modded!

First of all thank you so much for your awesome tool "Tickle My Android" which i really like it (Y).
i'm about to get XA1 Ultra so sure i'm so curious about root also but i'll try to make it clear,
simply, don't waste your time searching for a root tool because it's impossible to have root without modifying kernel, so, 100% all of these tools are just malware !
in the new devices there's something calls DM-Verity which is a check tool and that means any modification to /system will leads to bootloop,
so DM-Verity must be disabled ( through kernel of course ) & any mess with kernel means you have to unlock bootloader.
another thing, Sony ric which is prevent mounting system, so, any modification must be through recovery or it will leads to bootloop also, so we must also disable it.
fortunately on my xperia z2 there is no DM-Verity and there's a module to disable sony ric through recovery so root was possible without unlocking bootloader but starting from xperia z3+ DM-Verity appeared !
so now root is impossible without unlocking bootloader ( which means losing drm keys forever if you didn't back it up ).
i downloaded the firmware for xa1 ultra through xperiafirm and i unpacked the kernel and tried with these tools to see how its going on:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...oot-automatic-repack-stock-kernel-dm-t3301605
&
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/poc-real-trim-instead-drm-fix-t3552893
the first one was hanging and i didn't get any information & the second one to be able to use it then you must put your ta.img ( your ta backup ) inside the folder,
i used my z2 ta.img as a test to see the process and the result was pretty good !
i successful disabled DM-Verity and there's no sony ric !!!!! but it's also still not safe and needs to be confirmed because maybe there's a bad surprise which is not clear yet, maybe something like sony ric but new !
so, if it's only the ****ty DM-Verity it's easy to disable it even away from this tool because we can't use it without ta.img, maybe by any script or unpacking kernel and modify it then repacking it this is not a problem at all & after that MAYBE we can flash supersu or magisk via ADB since there's no recovery yet ( completely not sure about this so it needs to be confirmed ) & in this case the choice is between root or drm features but at least root has been achieved.
so now, we need something like this to be able to backup ta without root and after that no problem of unlocking bootloader:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/universal-dirtycow-based-ta-backup-t3514236
or
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/iovyroot-temp-root-tool-t3349597
or if it's not possible at this moment to backup ta without root then at least we need something like this to be able to to reactivate drm features such as camera denoise and x-reality...etc:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672
or
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/development/sony-credentials-restore-unlocking-t3296383
or the worst choice...root without drm & waiting for a fix like those above !
anyway, root is not easy like before but it's still possible after all, i tried to clarify everything as much as i can and i hope there's a solution soon !
@munjeni we need your help bro, please if you have free time have a look, i uploaded the kernel for xa1 ultra so try to tell us how it's going on & what is new !
https://www.mediafire.com/?bc63fgjw99r785d
good luck for everyone .
As my Z5 compact was broken, I bought the XA1. I didn't remember, how awful an unrooted phone is - So I am also waiting and would be very interested to be informed.

Bought this phone to replace my old Xiaomi. It's a good, powerful phone. Hope to see root appear for it soon. Personally for me, I'm one of those people who will only root a phone once it gets slow (the warranty expires). So as much as I'm reluctant to root my phone now, I'll hold out and see what wonderful developments appear on this thread.
Given the XA1 (I have the XA1 not the XA1 Ultra, I believe they are different) runs a Mediatek processor, I'm inclined to see something along the lines of a MT Flash Tool being used. Correct me if I'm wrong but I've only had successful flashes and roots with Qualcomm processors. The last device I had with a Mediatek processor (Lenovo A8-50 A5500H, MT8382) bricked on me horribly and I had to throw it away :crying:.
Meh. Hope we'll see awesomeness come soon from here. I'm still pretty new to XDA, looks like an awesome community

Tap on Build Number until you get a toast notification that says you're a developer.
You should now be able to access Developer Options in Settings.
Go inside Developer Options then toggle OEM unlocking. Make sure it's on.
The code you get from the website should work now.
Update to newest fw, unlock bootloader, , flash this boot and this recovery
When that's done you can flash either su, magisk via TWRP to get root.

twrp-3.1.1-0-kagura.img (TWRP for the old XZ) didn't work (using 'fastboot boot twrp-3.1.1-0-kagura.img' command without flashing it).

You've unlocked your BL without backing up your TA? You know that you lost your DRM keys?

It looks like something good is coming soon:

Err...I don't know if I really need it (or know much about it). I guess it has something to do with Sony proprietary app, music, etc?
If yes, I don't think I really care about it. I don't even have the intention to relock the bootloader...I guess.

You're awesome! Thanks for sharing this.
Have you tried twrp-3.0.2-4-kagura.img instead? That always worked for me.

Same here, I don't care about the keys at all since I don't have intentions to relock bootloader and I don't care about the warranty.
I have no desire to wait for them to update tabackup tool .

and @FartyParty
It's not only about proprietary apps. It's about advanced functions for both camera and music. There will be no noise canceling and other algorithms that make the backbone of decent looking pics and videos. That's why everyone is freaked about the TA backup. They're unique and cannot be used from another XZp. Relocking the BL won't do a thing since those keys are buh-bye forever. I for once bought this beauty for the looks, camera, and music (-ish), but I'll miss Xposed FW like crazy (hopefully we'll have xposed for N soon).
Best thing to do now is to wait for a custom kernel that restores those functions - it's just around the corner.
sorry for spamming the forum - got bored at work. still - DRM functionality is pretty important.

I am fully aware what losing the drm-keys does and I simply do not care about it, since you can simply apply the drm-fix and be on your way.
When I got my XZs I rooted it instantly, applied the drm-fix and continued as normal.
For me, root is always #1 and I'm more than happy to lose the drm-keys to get it.

Totally agree.. I now found out there is a DRM fix. I thought it would take some time. I'm one day away from my XZp

Tried 3.0.2-0, 3.0.2-4, 3.1.0-0, 3.1.1-0 kaguras, still no luck via 'fastboot boot <recoveryfilename>'
How about you? Have you unlocked your bootloader yet? Have you found a custom recovery that works? I really really want to root this device.

Well I on the other hand didn't know that
It's been a while since my last Xperia and this is ridiculous, to lose essential features that makes it different to other phone just from unlocking the bootloader? Seriously?

He tagged me so had to reply.
It's not really ridiculous at all. It's a choice you make. Either you keep it locked and use it without root or you unlock it.
With the drm-fix you don't really lose the features.
And not yet but I will as soon as I get my second pink .
I'm screwed....just took a photo to look how bad the result would be after bootloader unlock and it's just the worst experience ever.
No photo could be taken, all shots just gave me literally full blank green picture (no picture at all!). Video works normally I think...
Oh my....what did I just do

You have to wait for a custom kernel that has drm-fix included and it will be fine again.
But your warranty is now gone.
