I have talked to 2 other g2 owners, both on Verizon, and they have the same problem. While on a call randomly the other person can barely hear me, it doesn't happen every call but enough to be considered a problem. Anyone else experience this and what carrier. I tweeted @lgusamobile to no avail. I am on my 2nd g2 and it still does it.

I'm beginning to wonder if it has something to do with Verizon changing the mic holes from 3 to 1?
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
Just started using my G2 today. Made a couple of calls and had no issues until this evening. Two calls in a row and the person I was talking to could barely hear me. So I put it on speakerphone and he could hear me just fine. I sure don't want to have to keep doing that. I'm on T-Mobile.

I'm hoping it's just a software problem, that eliminates my theory on the mic hole

Exactly what I started experiencing abotu 2 days ago. When I hold the phone with my chin (slightly slant) they cant hear me but when I hold it with my hand facing my mouth they can clearly hear me. its weird, what gives?
Ive noticed the same problem as well. I figured out last night that if I hold the phone higher on my face, so the ear speaker is a tad above my ear, people on the other end say I sound way better.
Sounds like LG has some call quality issues it needs to hammer out on these phones with software updates.
ok, add me to the list for call quality/clarity issues; i'm using an att stock, but rooted ROM. people i've talked to on my phone say i sound muffled, like my hand is covering my mouth. they can't understand what i'm saying. . called at&t - from my phone - to report the problem and the tech support person confirmed my issue. they're sending a replacement device overnight. i hope the new device does not have the same issues .
Yep, I'm also on T-Mobile AMD having the same issue

sad to report that the replacement device i received today exhibited the same issues. chit! i'm really disappointed that the problem was still present. i was (supposedly) talking with a manager/tech who asked me to call him from my other phones (S4/HTC One) to see if he could hear the difference. to my disappointment, he said he could clearly tell how muffled i sounded on both of my G2s. another phone is on the way for me to test. fingers are crossed that the 3rd device will work.
I had this problem when my gf called me. She said i sounded very low and that i sounded as thou i was sick. That was the second day i got the phone. since i don't really use it for calls that much its not a worry. plus i past my days of return.

So if I'm correct the mic in G2 has strait direction and does not hear and amplify sounds going from other directions except nearby mouth voice. So I suppose people should fire voice recorder and tinker with recording self muffling some chatting and keeping mic in different directions. Then listen to what other part probably hear. Probably someone would find the best position for mic to record voice. Me thinks that it's a distinctive mic's feature &specificity so software update would never come being not needed in the first place

So then its not mic-related. Were you holding phone above a shoulder like when talking or display in front of face? or either way it records same?
If it's not mic than it's something AMR related. Probly on bad line and signal phone chooses AMR-NB instead of AMR-WB, does it?
well... received a 2nd new phone, spent another 45 minutes on the phone with another tech, testing the G2 and a HTC One only to have the same results: muffled voice on the G2. i have never, ever, ever had this kind of issue with Android device. i was given a case number (what ever that means) told to expect a call from another tech person and, that it's possible at&t might ship my phone back to LG. WTF!! apologies for my rant, just very disappointed. think i'm going to buy the T-Mobile version, unlock it and test on at&t.

I'm sorry guys I jumped ship. I wanted to like my atrix so much! Literally the only problem I had, seriously the only problem was the people couldn't understand me when I talked to them. It was a great phone but I'm starting to like my phone more.

Well I would assume working on your speaking or getting a less defective Atrix would work just as well. Not like anyone else has a probably with the voice quality...
I had the same problem. I turned off the noise cancellation feature and that fixed it. The noise cancellation feature sounds like it has a gate with a threshold that's too high so it cuts off the beginning and end of words.

Yea I got the inspire sorry for not being specific. Well I talked to the guy at best buy and he looked at me like I just wanted a new phone. But I'm pretty sure I know how to hold a phone and even when my phone was two inches away from my mouth when I was on speaker and people are still complaining I don't think that it's the position I'm holding it. It's not user error and now all of the sudden after I got the inspire people have been commenting on how they can hear me for the first time since I got my atrix. They didn't know I got a new phone. I'm not trying to say the atrix was a bad device it just didn't suit my needs as well as I liked. And I didn't know how I was going to be able to prove that my atrix had bad call quality to the best buy guy since it's a qualitative example.

you probably coulda called him and walked across the store to show that your mic was bad, nobody has any problems understanding me whatsoever.
I've had complaints on my phone as well... they say it sounds muffled basically. I'll see if things get better with noise cancellation off. That's one of the few complaints I've had about the phone actually. I never really had much concern over call quality, but it's been mentioned enough times that I think it's a reasonable issue.

If you didn't think you could convince the BB guy with a phone call and then you state that the Atrix didn't suit your needs, it tells me that you really did just want a new phone. If you didn't like the device just be honest about it. If you liked the device you would have exchanged it for a different Atrix as defective.
My phone sounded muffled on the first day of owning it. Now I have no complaints, not sure if it was a setting or what.
I had the same issues with speakerphone, but after I turned off noise cancellation everything was better.

Actually a lot of people have issues with the voice quality. I've gone through 3 atrixes and still have the same issue, even the employees at the ATT store notice it. Motorola said they were working on it and some people have had some luck exchanging the phone, others have not been so lucky. The issue is only with the mic in the phone, if you use bluetooth then voice quality is crystal clear.
Bell atrix here..

Hi Guys,
I am looking at buying a unlocked phone. I am going to ask my friend to pick up one for when he is travelling to US next month. None of listed phones are available in my country and I guess it will take another year. Before that I guess we would have quad core phones I was almost fixed on Atrix until I read the voice quality problem. I won't be able to replace it with the new one so easily. What you guys reckon? My second choice is LG optimus 2x or Dell Streak. Just want your advise so I could make up my mind.
I have an AT&T Atrix unlocked on Rogers in Canada and have had zero call quality issues. It's on par with my Nexus One, if not better. I cannot speak for the LG, but I've had a streak and far prefer my Atrix.
The Streak was a great phone, but I found it too big. I tried it as a cross between a phone/tablet and that's exactly what it is. As for Streak call quality, it was great via bluetooth, but found it horrid when holding it up to my head.. not to mention I felt like a tool everytime I had to put it up against my head.
My vote is Atrix, although I still get my flash fixes from my Nexus, so it depends on what you're looking for.
i cant speak on the LG or Streak, just the atrix
holding the phone to ear:
hearing people on my Atrix is good -> above good
i felt the N1 speaker in the ear was much better
talking into the phone, i had to turn off the noise surpression feature and as log as i wasnt erratic with my talking i can be heard fairly well...
hands free speakerphone
i can be heard very loud and clearly, and the speaker is very loud and clear
i have not used any bluetooh device with it yet, but have heard good things, depending on the quality of the BT device you choose...
GL (love the atrix gonna be hard to get this away from me)
IMO forget about the Dell Streak. I had one for 5 months, and the lack of updates, plus the overall laggyness of the interface was really annoying.
I've had a play with an LG 2X and its very quick. The build quality (and the big chin below the screen) was a major let down. The call quality was pretty poor also (typical of all LG phones).
I've had my Atrix now for just over a month. I've had no call quality issues. I bought the Bell Canada version, and I am thankful now, because the Bell seems to accept other firmwares (eg, flashed an Australian Telstra SBF on to it with 100% success) where as the AT&T version does not allow you to do this.
I would go the Atrix if you need a phone right now. If not, maybe hang out for the Samsung Galaxy S II and compare them both. IMO the SGS II will be a nice phone, but the super amoled screen is going to look pretty pixelated at 800x480 res on 4.3" - and its a pretty big phone too.
Thanks for the reply guys. Atrix will be my first choice. I will be getting one of the unlocked version from ebay. I mostly find the AT & T version only there. I am also following up with the Motorola Audio quality thread, hopefully its not a hardware issue just a software issue.

Beware.
There's no such "unlocked version" of the Atrix. It's not the iphone world anymore my friend.
Please estimate the unlock at only $20 USD when you're looking for an unlocked Atrix.
Or else we will show you how to unlock an AT&T Atrix for $20 USD.
Thanks and gold luck.
Edit: To add to your first question. I did not face issues with call quality in the Atrix. I knew from the very first call I made using it that it's crisper than my previous iphone 3GS. Moreover, The external speaker is epic on the Atrix!
From experience the Atrix has better voice quality than ny streak. Also I use a stereo bluetooth headset when I play basketball at the gym. With the streak, I had to put the phone in a holster on my hip because it would cut in and out while listening to music and occasionally drop the connection entirely until I reconnected them. With the atrix, I can sit my phone down in the corner somewhere and play full court basketball and rarely even get a skip in the music.

Hey mate, are you facing any problems with the call quality?
It's really luck at this point. Like you said, check the call quality thread on the official moto forums. There are hundreds of posts where people have had a ****on of troubles. I went through 3 Atrix phones before finding one that was acceptable. Noise suppresion on the phone is done via second mic on the back of the phone.
I had various hardware problems with the previous Atrix phones that I've had and I continue to have problems with the last one I got.
Maybe I'm just unlucky, but I would not gamble my money and hope to get a good unit from eBay.

I think the atrix is a great phone, but if I had a choice id get the LG g2x.
IPS LCD screen that's supposed to be very nice.
Superior build quality/materials
Better camera.
Stock HDMI mirroring
The only thing the atrix has on it are more RAM, fingerprint, and bigger battery. Check youtube reviews on the LG. Reviewers rave about it

I am not using a bumper. Currently using an s line case. I do not think its the case as I do not change the level of my voice, just say hello twice and they always hear me on the second hello. I too have never had this issue with any of my other phones. But if others are having the same issue I will not try for a replacement. Just trying to see what everyone else has to say. I will start a poll to see if its just AT&T or T-Mobile as well.

I have this issue and my phone is naked as a baby.
I'm having the same issue. First discovered problem yesterday when leaving messages for people and them complaining they couldnt understand my message.
Did an extended call test with my GF this morning at the house. I called her using my phone and she called me using my phone so we could both experience both ends of the call. The best way I can describe it is it sounds like a speakerphone conversation. The voice from nexus is muted unless speaking, and the unmute doesnt happen as soon as they speak but rather a moment after they begin speaking. I'm on TMobile.
same issue with me. Maybe is related to the buzz noize from the speaker during the call.

My speaker buzzes even when it's not in a call. If I just put the phone to my ear I can hear a small crackle...
To the OP: That seems weird. I wouldn't know about that for myself just yet, being that I haven't activated mine on any network. I'll be doing that when I get into work today. I still have a T-Mobile sim card there. Can't wait to test out the call quality and what not.

I noticed from a post in a similar thread that there was mention of a recent commit to CM, so I have a feeling that if that gets pushed in there sometime it'll most likely be fixed in the other ROMS in the time to come. Don't think there's anything you can do to fix it yourself- unless you're a developer.
I have the same problem. But I really don't care. People can wait

My misses just got her HTC ONE for her upgrade as she likes mine.
She got the black one and i noticed they still have issues with the speaker grills not sitting right.
Love my phone and its been great ( performance wise and no issues technically ) and she likes hers, but I'd have thought by now they'd have ironed out these silly issues.
She hasn't noticed it and it's gone straight into a case so she isn't bothered, I'm just surprised about this.
They're only issues if you allow them to be issues. Seriously, it's only a issue if the grill is hanging off lol
Quality control is quality control. Don't get me wrong. I love HTC. But they should get their **** together if they want to be world beaters.

When you pay for a phone that's this expensive, you should be allowed to ask for perfection.
Although i don't let it bother me, i still sometimes see the grill and wish they had fixed it.
I just got my second One and it's in worse shape than the first One. The first was actually pretty good, build wise, I exchanged it for the camera issue. Now I have a phone with a couple of build issues and the camera issue is still there. I shouldn't have returned my first One

Although I do understand where you are coming from, people put these phones together. Unless the people are perfect, there's no way the phone is gonna be perfect.
TBH, though, they're not that far off. They really aren't. I wouldnt mind but they done the hard part spot on, carve the aluminium etc etc.
It woudn't take all that much to fix the grill issue.
My phone does have a slightly rough edge to the screen and the speaker grill a the top has the gap a bit. I just think to myself, let them dry longer or, use better glue, or a bit more of it and apply some even pressure around the edges lol.
For a company that has build a damn good phone, it aint rocket science.

The one is designed and manufactured to be as thin as possible. On top of that they also implemented their 'zero gap' design. If you read some of the teardown threads, it's assembled in a way that allows zero room for error. Taking into account the fact that most people who receive a One that they consider to be perfect don't usually post about it at all, I'd say the actual defects of the one are a much smaller percentage than they appear to be on XDA.
Where HTC really impresses me is the fact that they seem to be 100% willing to warranty any device with any build quality issue. Obviously they should, after advertising a premium device with no gap and superior build quality to plastic phones. However, what major companies should do, and what they really do are not always the same. They can not promise you a perfect phone, but they are willing to replace it until you receive on that satisfies you.
Where they fail, is with that replacement device. Any mass produced product is going to have defects, and some will make it past quality control, this is inevitable. But devices going to customers who have already sent in devices due to build quality issues should have added levels of quality control, to ensure no one gets two bad phone. That would save them a lot of negative publicity.

Just thought I'd update here. So far I'm going to be on my fourth warranty exchange in less than 3 weeks. The second I got had USB port issues. The one ingot today had this weird glue around the top speaker grill and the grill looked like it wasn't even on straight. And the top speaker didnt even work. The build quality was sub par. Not acceptable. Called right away and they are overnighting me another tomorrow. Hopefully this one is accetable. If not I'm done with HTC. Has anyone had some kind of glue type substance around the grills or where the gaps are. I mean why do they think they can send me this and call is acceptable. ?? Sorry I didn't like spending hours on the phone. Most of it was correcting and issue the first rep made by not even processing the order. Tmobile USA. Come on.

Dude I'm dealing with the same issue with tmobile, it's not htc it's tmobile sending out bad refurbished models I'm waiting on my third one and then I'm giving up. They don't seem to get it that the speaker grills have glue sticking out or it looks chipped inbetween the grill and plastic. If the new one I get is the same I'm going to take pictures and post all over tmobile support advising to people thats what tmobile calls acceptable. They suggested me going eip for a new phone, they just want money and don't seem to care that I paid in full for a faulty device, my defects didn't start showing up till after the first 30 days passed, and I bet they are going to lag on the update as well, situations like this make me hate these companies and there policies, they try to sound so cheerful over the phone but they don't understand that we don't deserve to be given broken devices over things we didn't break but sadly we can't do much to over power them they will just be like "again we are sorry for the inconvenience can we send you another" they make me sick

That sucks man. When I first opened the package I saw what at first looked like a scuff. Then I noticed it on both sides of the top speaker grill. I'd say that was the worst built phone I've ever seen. The grills didn't line up, the screen wasn't flush and it looked beat up around the sides. I've never had build issues with other phones. I agree with you. If this one today is bad I'll call customer loyalty and see what else they can get me. I'm not particularly picky but I'd have to be something within the same price range. I know they've offered alternative exchanges before. I think they try not yo as much anymore. 5$ every time you exchange adds up plus they charged me 7.99 for shipping of my charger that was defective. At the end of it all I'm going to see if they'll credit me.

Customer loyalty are the reps that you get transfered to when you want to cancel . they will do almost anything to keep you with the company. They are traditionally called retention but Tmobile calls then customer loyalty. I've had them send me a brand new phone just to keep my business. Although it depends on how long you've been a customer, and I've you have credits given in the past. I used to work for Tmobile years and years ago and used to shadow these guys from time to time.

I haven't had any credits, and I've been a customer for two years but yea I've heard of retention, well I will try them if the next one is faulty again, I really don't want a different device but this stuff is just ridiculous, I have screen lift and a tiny screen leak that htc told me to be dangerous plus the camera issue

Im supposed to get mine today. Hopefully its acceptable enough for me to keep. Yeah I'd hate a different device also. There was a reason I chose this over sgs4.

Update: finally got my replacement in the mail. I'd have to say they really worked on getting me a zero gap device. Everything is aligned. No glue stocking out of the grills. No problems with the buttons. No gaps at all. Software is also running great. I was gonna call right away again if there were issues but I'm actually shocked they came through. Now to see how fast they can get 4.3 out.

I have had this problem since day one of owning the phone and with every new ROM I flash I always have to make changes to my build.prop to fix the muffled sound quality people on the other end hear. It's persist.audio.fluence.voicecall that I have to change from false to true in order for people to hear me clearly on the other end. Does everyone experience this? If so, I'm curious why, unless it's just not possible, ROM creators don't edit the build.prop in the ROM before releasing it. It's been a bug that has always bothered me. I flash a new ROM, forget about that until I start to make/receive calls. Then I have to root if the ROM isn't already and download the build.prop editor to make the call quality much better. So does this effect everyone or just some users?
Yes, I had the problem and lived with it for WAY too long. It's a hardware issue. Confirmed by Google. My replacement is perfect. Replace now.

Confirmed by Google? Did you see that somewhere, or did you get an email from them? I'm asking, because I'm hoping to go back to Huawei about a replacement. Unfortunately I bought mine from Best Buy, so no chance of Google doing anything for me, I guess. I have rooted mine and applied the build.prop "fix" everyone has been using for a while. I can make decent "handset" or bluetooth calls, but speakerphone won't work since noise cancelling is disabled.
I cleaned the back mic and since have had no complaints. I also try to make sure it's not covered when using speaker phone.
