[Q] Google Contacts Sync battery hog. - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the number 1 battery hog by far on my g2 is google contacts sync. Its basically never letting my g2 sleep. FWIW I checked in accounts and there's an error showing that sync is experiencing problems and hasn't updated since I bought it.Any idea on what's going on?

yeah a bad luck situation. delete account and resetup sync for one account, let it sync and then add another if you have multiple.
If that doesnt work you might need to go into settings, apps and then wipe contacts and then contacts sync and then resetup again the sync.
Thats whats worked on old phones I had

My contacts haven't been syncing since the 28th either, don't know what gives

Just had the same issue. I was getting massive idle battery drain; ~ 13% just sitting overnight whereas my GNex drained ~2-3% overnight. Went to app manager and cleared data on contacts and contacts storage. Then re-synced and it seems to be working again. Not sure what happened?

I am on stock. I downloaded an app called "contacts sync fix" that will go through and fix errors in your contacts so they will sync again. May not be a permanent solution, however the contacts sync is no longer leading my wakelocks.

Gmail will not refresh!

Hello everyone! On my brother's evo the the gmail will not refresh anymore. Do you know what the reason could be? He does have internet connection. He has over 500 emails on the account could that the problem?

Any help on this?

I had a similar problem. Then I just found out today that if you disable Google Talk from starting up (like everybody was advising to save battery life) then Gmail push does not work right. I let Google Talk start up now, and now my push services work... better.

So just go to settings in the talk app and have it automatically sign in? Will have to check his settings tonight and will report back if that fixes it. Thanks!

Make sure that data syncing did not get turned off either. You can also try to manually sync your accounts through menu-settings-accounts and sync. Then choose sync all
I had an identical problem where even manual sync stopped working for now reason.
I added a second gmail account with the same account info and the primary.
After I did that it was like it merged the two and it started working again.

Stock Gmail not pushing emails.....

I am having an issue with my stock Gmail app not pushing my new emails. It just started NOT happening all of a sudden. Any suggestions? Still on stock rom 2.1

i am having the exact same issue, it started today. the only way i can get my emails pushed to my phone is if i go to the gmail app and then do a refresh. i have to do this everytime i want to read my gmail on my phone. and i do not run any task killers. i am running bionix fusion. i have rebooted my phone, battery and sim pulls and nothing is fixing it.
ditto
I'm having the same problem.
Running:
-Bionix Fusion 1.1
-Project Core v1
I flashed the JI2 modem yesterday again to see if it would help improve my battery life. I'm not sure if that's the reason I'm not getting gmail pushed to my phone though.

Same here. NO task killers and have to refresh to get my emails. Only difference is I am on stock.
Had the same problem. Go to menu>applications>manage. Once there, press menu and change the filter to show all apps. Its set to 3rd Party by default. Then, find gmail, and gmail storage and clear the data and cache for both.
Open gmail and it should fix it.

Sorry, but it didn't work for me either. Bad thing is that there are no other good email apps for gmail. Maildroid is what I am currently using just so I can get notifications. One thing I forgot to mention was that it was working fine today before I downloaded Gmail notifier from the market. Deleted it, but it hasn't worked since.

Actually this fixed the issue for me - or so it seems so far.
I am having the same issue, and I also downloaded Gmail notifier from the market. I tried deleting the data and the cache as well, and so far no change.
I have stock JI6, never installed gmail notifier and it stopped working last night. Will try the cache method and report back.
Funny thing is that I have two gmail accounts. The one that's NOT tied to my phone user information works just fine and is getting the immediate push emails.
Same here no new emails are shown in the phone Gmail since last night
is Every other phone having the same problem now?

In this case, i would check settings on gmail server and in accounts & sync. Maybe try resetting the values just to deflag and reflag it.

Nexus s calendar

Hi everybody howcome when I go in calendar and try to add a event it says you have no calendar? Can somebody help me. I download a calendar app from market gave me same message.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Did you create one from Google Calendar? Log onto your gmail account and create a calendar then sync it to your phone.
Lol sounds confusing. What about contacts I saved 2 but its not on my contacts howcome?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
It happened to me when I first got my Nexus S. Even though I linked gmail and the calendar wouldn't allow me to add an event until a few days after using the phone while synced to Google account.
Sync Google account and do a soft reboot and if it doesn't work right away, let it run for a couple days. Give that a try. Good luck.

You can manually sync from the sync menu.

I bought my wife the new Nexus S 4g today. The guy at the sprint store helper her set up the phone even thought I did not want him too. Oh well it is his job. Thing is she had never setup Google Calendar because she had a BlackBerry before that. So when I got home I setup her Google calendar but it is not syncing to her new phone. When I go to Setting > Accounts & Sync > her google account there is not a Calendar option. What do I need to do I don't want to have to reset her phone. Are there any other options? Thanks.
Odd. Calendar should be one of the defaults syncs. Have you tried running the calendar app and see if the gmail account shows up there?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I had tried running the calendar app but nothing shows up I even enter an event online thinking may bring it down but nothing. If you try to add an event on the phone it just says "You have no calendars". It is almost like the phone did not sync all the way to her account. I really don't want to reset her phone to factory default and have her set everything up again. She would not want to do that. She has already change the wallpaper all the screens downloaded apps, and changed ring tones.
I meant open the calendar app, press the menu button, press More then on Calendars and make sure the gmail account is listed there.
Also, this might be a stupid question but you're connected with Wifi or mobile network (3G, 2G, etc) right? Your phone signal bars should appear green if you're connected to Google's servers. If it's not green, you won't be able to sync.
I go to Calendar app > More > Calendars and there is nothing there, just have an Ok and cancel button. I have been on 3g, 4g, and wifi and nothing on any of them. Yes the the bars a green at the top.
I doubt you need to reset to factory so not to worry about that. Maybe you just have to wait a day or two. Either that or bring it back to the store and have them figure it out.
Might do that thanks. Hopefully it will work itself out.
You can also try rebooting the phone if you haven't already.
already tried that
Sent from HTC Evo CM7 with XDA Premium.
maybe you should try and get the stock calendar.apk and re-install it...???
Ok I talked to Sprint and they said that is easiest way was to make sure that the phone was backed up to Google and just do a Factory Wipe. Basically wipe the phone and start over. So I did and that fixed the problem. So anyone who gets a new google phone and does not have all the google apps setup do that before you get the phone activated. I hope someone finds a better way because that is a major oversight on googles part. But everything is working great now.

Does it happen via data or WiFi?
Or both?
Did u verify that they didn't sync by going to desktop site to actually see if they didn't actually sync?
Is it all Google accounts, or just certain ones....

Worse case, sign out and resign in to see if helps

From time to time I have problems with contacts not displaying the pictures and/or numbers etc.
I clear the data for the "Contacts Storage" in Apps and then re-sync. Maybe you could try that and see what happens - Just make sure that you can correctly see your contacts in Gmail on your PC or laptop first and they are backed up!

This sync error occurs both for mobile data and Wifi.
And the sync errors only for contacts. Gmail, browser, photos, and calendar successfully synchronized.

maybe your contac database at gmail was corrupted make another gmail account and copy your contacts to the new gmail and try your phone with the new gmail to sync.
I seem to be seeing after looking that I have the same issue. So I did a couple things like signing in and out and that didn't work. I backed up my contacts and deleted my contacts and that didn't work. However I did find something that works.
1. Export your contacts to SD card so you don't lose anything.
2. Go to Settings and find your Google Account and uncheck Contacts to sync.
3. Go to Settings/Apps slide over to all apps.
4. Go down to Contacts. Force stop and clear data.
5. Go to Contact Storage. Force stop and clear data.
6. Go back to your Google Account and recheck Contacts to sync.
At that point you should notice it takes a few seconds longer to sync but when finished showed it completed. If you lose any contacts actually in the Gmail remember you exported your contacts so you still have them.
To export contacts:
Go to Contacts, hit Menu, then click Import/Export and save to SD card.
I recommend exporting contacts on a reasonable basis anyhow uncase anything happens to the phone and/or Gmail so you still have a hard copy on your SD card. You can never be to sure.
I hope this helps and remember to thank me by clicking the thanks.
Edit: I'm also finding if you are running HaxSync that the problem happens more. May be a bug.
Great alternative to HaxSync is Facebook Contact Sync. Link Below:

Another great alternative to HaxSync is Facebook Contact Sync. I will update my above post with the Play Store link.
It happened for me also with Haxsync when I used the upload pics back to Google option. I unselected it, readded the Google account and it was fine again.

Exchange Service wakelock killing my battery

Hi, I moved from a Galaxy Nexus 2 weeks ago.
I'm running the lastest CM 10.1 Nightly and Franco Kernel.
Like I week ago I noticed a very high wakelock caused by "Exchange Service". I'm using my Hotmail account configured as Exchange with the stock email android App.
I didn't have that wakelock before with my SGN or the first week using my N4.
I don't know what to do, I have tried deleting the account and setting the update interval to 1 hour.
Any ideas?
This is making me crazy
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Check this out:
It goes to deep sleep, but there are some wakelocks made by:
Calendar, Exchange and Gtalk (Which is strange as I have it frozen using TIBU).

This is what happens when people have too much information at their finger tips.
I see 3mins and 6 mins of wakelocks there in 10hrs? How is that "killing" your battery?

494 wakelock ? With push email off? It was supposed to check the email each 2 hours. No contact and calendar sync.. OK all the wakelocks were "only" 12 minutes... I had it configured in the same way with my gnex and never had this problem.
Thanks.

Sorry guys but I think there must be something wrong here.
It's only syncing one account and the refresh rate is set to 1h!!! I get barely 10 emails daily and don't reply them.
It looks like there is a mistake in the configuration of exchange and it ends in a loop.
Plus I don't even use the calendar, I have like 10 entries in all the year!! It doesn't make sense.
I use whatsapp 10 times more than email and calendar combined and I don't see it generating so mane wake locks.

I was able of removing the wakelock doing the following:
Using titanium backup made "exchange services" a user app.
Added to greenify
BUT the only problem is that now I have to open the email app to get my emails.. Trying to avoid this with tasker but tasker doesn't work with processes like exchange service.
Battery life has improved!!

It's not just you
It's not just you. Something is definitely wrong.
I have had this problem since ICS 4.0 on my Nexus S.
I've tried stock and am now running CM 10.1. This morning my stock battery stats show 3h 17m on battery and Exchange Services with 1h 5m of "Keep awake". Battery is down to 58%. That makes the battery life about 6 hours. Yesterday, I got 14.
This problem goes away every time I flash a ROM update, but will always recur after a few weeks. If I disable sync, everything is fine. It doesn't seem to matter whether the Exchange Sync setting are set to Email, Calender, or Contacts. It also doesn't seem to matter how often sync is set for: push, 30 min, 1 hour, or 3 hours -- the problem still persists unless sync is off in the OS.
I would love suggestions on what to do.
