ROM questions - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I've been running FoxHound on my SGH-i337 for a while. It's fast, it's smooth, and it keeps the multi-window/air hover/air gesture stuff I like. However, I've been having issues with it corrupting my /data, or something like that. Point is, my phone goes all boot loopy on me.
Is there another ROM out there that combines the speed of AOSP with the TouchWiz features? I specifically want multi-window.
Thanks in advance!

When did this start and what kernel/kernel settings are you using?

New to root and overwhelmed with choices-please help

I finally decided to root my g2 but I'm quickly becoming overwhelmed with all the possible choices and information. This is what I'm looking for and hopefully somebody can tell me the simplest way to achieve it.
I want good gps and working Google talking navigation.
I need working wifi calling.
I want to safely over clock.
I am not overly concerned with appearance, i just want something that works well with no bugs. I've been using cm7 nightly on my nook color and I'm happy with it, but does cm play nice with gps now? I've read several threads about other roms and that's why I'm stuck. I really don't want to have to experiment with a dozen different setups. Thank you ahead of time!
Most ROMs in the dev section provide all 3 of those. Any custom ROM allows overclocking, nearly all provide WiFi calling (or you can add it later), and gapps provides your navigation/gps functionality.
You can read before installing whether or not there are known bugs (some AOSP ROMs have GPS issues), and then troubleshoot afterwards if you have issues.
Just be sure to back up with ROM manager before you flash, and you can always go back to the previous setup if you're unhappy with the way your chosen ROM performs for you.
I'd recommend the ROM in my signature to meet all of the needs you mentioned. It's fast, reliable, and has incredible support... essentially it's a moderately modded version of CM7.

Be sure to follow the wiki for rooting its flawless.
As for rom choice I always, always end up back on CM7. Nothing beats its out of the box functionality and stability.

I've used Virtuos Sense 2.0.0 and now I'm on InsertCoin Sense 2.1+3.0. Both are great and should fit your needs.
Basically, once you root your phone changing ROMs is easy so you can try different ones and see which you like best.
Thanks for the replies so far. If I get anything wrong or mistaken, please jump in and correct me:
From what I've read, I don't think I'd like any of the Miui-types, they seem more iPhone like than android and I really don't like the iphone.
CM7 is cm7, so it'd be the same on my G2 as my nook color, right? My NC has a built in overclock, I didn't have to add anything extra, is CM7 for the G2 the same?
I've read many threads about how good Virtuous is, but seems like just as many people say it's too resource intensive and slow. Comparing it to the stock Tmo 2.2 or 2.3, is it at least as good? Seems pointless to develop something if it's slower than stock. Is the Insertcoin just a variation of virtuous?
I'm intrigued by Dit's recommended rom, that may be my first choice to try.
I guess I'm really looking for a 1 stop shop, it took me a little while to get the market working on my NC. Do any of the mentioned rom's have everything from the start, or do I still need to add pieces (like gapps, or wifi calling) after installing the rom?
The other rom that has my interest is meXdroidMod, any opinions on it?

Virtuos Sense 2.0.0 is Sense 2.1, so it's not slower than stock (in fact it's faster, thanks to optimizations and Virtuos OC Daemon) and doesn't have any weird issues.
InsertCoin is developed by a different team and uses a different kernel (rmk), so I wouldn't call it a variation. It's also different in that it combines elements from Sense 2.1 and 3.0, while Virtuos ROMs are either full 2.1 or full 3.0.
i guess we all missed the main point here and is how to root lol heres the best guide for rooting your G2/Desire Z:

about the ROMs if you like CM7 go ahead and try it for, its the same as the one you have on your nook, and yes you can overclock without adding anything
about gps on cm7 most people have had trouble with it, but you just need to try cause i really never had any problems
Yea wipe efs before flashing, it will eliminate a lot of common issues with gps and such. Superwipe + will wipe everything well. Don't forget to flash recovery and do a nandroid backup! Also to make the transition easier backup with titanium backup pro. I use virtuous glite btw it looks stock except with light overclock and it is solid. Virtouos basically took the stock rom removed a lot of the bloat and overclocked and pre-rooted it. Works great my only hiccup was I had to grab the swpye beta apk. Aside from that I just restored my apps and I was away.

Gapps is embedded in the ILWT ROM, as is the EFS wipe tool, to help eliminate GPS issues (plus radio suggestions/info in the OP). Wifi Calling can also be added during ROM install. The OP gives all the info you could possibly need in his thread. Give it a thorough read... seems to cover all the things you've mentioned. And I've had nothing but best experience with it... been running it since nightly 186.
I've successfully rooted following the wiki, I was pretty nervous about screwing it up but everything went smoothly and exactly how it was written. I installed RomManager and flashed "clockworkmod recovery" and then clicked on "backup current rom" and it rebooted the phone and gave me several choices. I used the volume button to select "backup and restore" and selected that, and now it is showing me a screen with a top hat over an orange ring, it's just sitting there with no progress bars and no words. I was following the directions from this site:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...nandroid-backup-and-clockworkmod-rom-manager/
but it doesn't look like the screens on that site right now.
Is this supposed to happen, or did I somehow screw something up when I've barely gotten started?
You still need to flash a Recovery... you can do this through Rom Manager... but use version 3.0.2.4. Or, you could check out the Recovery in my signature. 4EXT Recovery... it's pretty wonderful. After you flash your chosen Recovery you will be able to make a NANDroid backup.
Misread your post. Yeah, you probably used the trackpad... sorry.

Did you use the power button to select?Don't, use the trackpad
I thought clicking "flash clockworkmod recovery" was flashing a recovery? My big question is what do I do right now, as things seem locked up with just the hat/orange ring on the screen. It's been that way for about 5 minutes at least. Can I power off without hurting anything? And yes, I used power to select "backup/recover".
Press it again and then use the trackpad to scroll and select, that screen is like a screensaver so to speak.
Bombadier,
Many, many thanks to you, I was afraid I'd royally screwed up. If it wasn't for your help in my ADB thread I wouldn't have made it this far, many and much thanks!
No problems happy to of helped
Last question for the night, and sorry if this is a dumb newb question. Once a rom is flashed, what is the easiest, quickest way to reinstall all my old apps?
When you log into google your apps are synced, would recommend getting titanium backup though,a good app which can backup, restore apps, upload to dropbox, uninstall system apps very useful indeed

Before you flash a new ROM, download "Titanium Backup" off the market and use the Menu button to select Batch. Do a backup of all your apps and data (not system data), and when you flash a new ROM, reinstall Titanium, select Batch mode again, and restore all missing apps and data.

[Q] rooted.....now?

So I have rooted for the first time, I flashed a ROM.
ok so i don't notice much difference.
So I'm guessing maybe its just the ROM I am using, I wont mention it by name as I'm sure the dev. Put alot of time and effort to create it and its just not what I'm looking for.
Other than speeding up the performance a little, what was the root suposed to do?
And
from what I can see ( and I'm not very experienced in this stuff, I'm learning ) most Roms are just stock with stuff riped out. What else is possible? I wanted to set myself apart from my stock user friends.
Why did you do it if you didn't already know the answer? Anyways, you can overclock, undervolt, have ROMs like MIUI and CM7, free wifi tethering, and more stuff.

You probably shouldn't have rooted if you didn't know what you were doing. As they always say, "If you have to ask what rooting IS, you probably shouldn't be looking up how to do it yet."
ok maybe I worded that wrong. Yes I know that I can overclock, Already done. And I have a rom on it. I guess what I'm asking is what diffferent roms have to offer.
I'm just learning and don't completely under stand all the technical stuff and the slang. They all basicly say the same thing. Faster and longer battery.
It really comes down to customization. A big one is boot times being much faster - this really seems popular, which I obviously understand. Some people compress all of the apps so the ROMs can really get down to like 200MB and the ROM is usually much better on memory in these cases. Another huge thing is custom kernels (overclocking) and being able to remove unwanted bloatware with system applications. There's apps on the market that only work on rooted devices, such as custom recovery which allows you to take a backup and then restore in the event you screw something up and get boot loops, and apps like cachemate and one of my new favs, the Reboot.apk. It's really limitless. Oh yeah, you can also customize font colors and notification colors, battery (and other) icons, messing with the build.prop, you are able to change certain behaviors of the phone/tablet, and with TrevE's apps, you can find out if your phone/tablet is spying on you. I recently deleted a lot of logs and made those files and folders read only so no more logs could be made. And finally, you customize your boot animation, which is really cool.
Thank you that's what I'm looking for.
So if I wanted to say change some icons, ist the same as flashing the rom? Can I download icons and install the same way? I'm Not ready to make my own or anything lol
Well, you can download full icon packs on the Market. Some are paid, some are free. There are other applications like "BetterCut" or something like that that allow you to change the icons. I'm not sure if you need a custom launcher to do that though, as I've always changed my icons inside of a custom launcher like Panda Home. Panda Home actually has a built in custom icon changer! Not sure if it's compatible with the tablet though, but I know ADW is. Good luck!
Perhaps, you should just flash back to a stock acer rom.
But before you do, take a good benchmark on your battery life.
Then flash back.
Sometimes, rooting is just not for everybody.
Ok one more question.
I have done a full back up, if i want to try a different rom, i flash the same way. If i dont like it i can restore using the backup i made and everything goes back to how it is now? Including how my home screen is now and widgets?
Thank you everyone!
Yes if you did the backup inside of cwm.. I used this feature alot when i was messing with the UI Of my tablet.. NOW all my icons text boarders all match the nice burgundy color case i have my tablet in
I Would try to restore your backup to be sure it does restore before flashing a new rom..
just make sure you fallow all instructions by the Rom Developer.Doing this and you should be fine..
If you brick your tablet you can Blame me .......
Happy Flashing...... STOCK IS BORING.
Ok great thank you
Just to be clear, i hate to asume but cwm is clockwork mod right?

Generally, this is correct.
Each Rom cook usually posts the procedures needed to install their rom. Usually, game data, downloaded files and such, is saved. Usually, but not always. Things on the ext sd card are not effected by this process. Usually the procedures are the same. Wipe data, cache, dalvik cache. Sometimes we like to throw in some formats. Especially with the newer roms.
Your full system recovery, should be done through your CWM recovery or RA Recovery, whichever you use, and NOT using an internal application. And this should be done before you install a rom. It will save your current system, widgets, etc, so your system is just like it was before you installed a different rom.
ok this might be a little pointless but I still cannot find a working method to root stock 3.2 help please

[Q] Help selecting basic touchwiz rom

I've got an ATT S4(NC1). It's rooted using towelroot and I want to use a different rom using safestrap.
There are SO many roms listed on this forum, honestly, I wouldn't know where to start. So, if you have a moment, I'm looking for something very simple:
1) basic - stripped down - no bloat
2) battery efficient
3) preferably don't need any "hacks" to make things work.
Someone on here suggested Goldeneye in one of my other threads. It looks like a super nice rom but I saw something about loading a wifi module to make wifi work so that prompted a search for a "works out of the box", simplistic rom.
Suggestions?
Thanks!

Which ROM is Closest to Stock TouchWiz?

I need a ROM that is close to stock TouchWiz; default Samsung Kernel (need HDMI output support), Note 3 Camera, full S-Pen support, stock modem and such. Just need something fast, reliable and clean.
Ah...How nice it would be to have an AOSP ROM with stock camera, S-Pen support, multiwindow etc
Same here.. been looking for one too..

Well... flash the stock ROM with Odin, then root it. In case you don't want that...
Here, lads: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649176 I used to flash different ROMs every 2-3 days, until one day I knew I wanted a stable ROM. And as f***ing ugly TouchWiz is, it's the real deal and Samsung took care it's stable. I tried first stock rooted, but it kept missing something, something I couldn't mod myself, because I am no dev. Then I found this ROM. Stable, and still with a tweak here and there. I'm using it with Lean kernel (3.9.3 works), and so far - no problems.
As for wishing that Samsung would release the source of the S-Pen and their camera... that's too much.
I for one use MultiX v2.0 it's based on 4.4.2 ROM with very little modifications regarding the interface.
I've got a better battery life with this ROM than with the original Rom + Root + XPosed (and Greenify), so there are some optimisations regarding that too.
It has all the standard features of TouchWiz/Note 3 and you can even select what apps to install (for example the samsung apps if you need/use them).
I haven't tested the HDMI output since i don't have a cable, but in theory it should work, the others stuff work as expected (S-Pen, GPS, Camera, ...)

With any custom ROM it's best to do a factory reset before installing the ROM, or you might end up with all kind of weird stuff. MultiX's Aroma installer also has options to do the wipes (factory reset) before it installs anything.
Make sure you follow the steps listed on the ROM's thread (this goes for all ROMs, not just MultiX), it will save you from a lot of trouble.
Oh, it's also not a bad idea to make backups of all the apps/data you have. If you have a custom recovery then it's also a good idea to make a complete backup from the recovery (make sure you have enough space on your phone or SD card, depending where you make the backup).
P.S. also make a backup of the EFS partition (multiX's aroma installer can do that too), just in case, you know the saying : "better safe than sorry"
(i've made EFS backups on all my phones, and i never had to use those backups in about 6 years of Android usage, but i still do them cause once i might just need it)
+1 for MultiX ROM. it looks better than stock TW (it had custom skins), it's as stable as stock but without the Samsung bloat and you can set a custom DPI while maintaining correctly sized stock apps.
By far, the best TW ROM!

TW Rom
CivZ FlexKat is very Cool and battery friendly without tons of modding's.
This rom is based on the Samsung 4.4.2 and won't contain heavy mods or themes, install what you want.
Super Fast and Famous Rom with lean kernel will be the best in my opinion.Your phone will fly..

[Q] First steps after rooting

Hello everyone,
I apologize in advance for my spelling, i am from the netherlands so my english isn't perfect. :good:
Recently i've rooted my galaxy s4, i thought it would be almost the same as a jailbroken iphone (you'll get cydia and everything is done from there). But when i rooted my device i only got the app: SuperSU.
So my question is: what are my next steps for a rooted device.
The main reason i wanted to root my device is a battery life increase and the customisation options. But i have neither of those at the moment.
Does anyone know maybe a clean ROM where all the bloatware from samsung has been removed, and your left with only the touchwiz look? This will also increase my battery life i think. Or is there some kind of app who will delete all the unnecessary stuff from my device?
I hope someone can help me with this.
Well, if you want to debloat your stock rom I would recommend Kushan02 debloater script. You will need a custom recovery for this, like twrp or cwm.
If you want a minimal custom rom you have options, like goldeneye or imperium. Search and read the development section.

Thanks i will look into this, do you know a way to increase my battery life as well? Or will this problem be solved after i 'install' Kushan02?
Having a lighter rom can help with the battery life, but do not expect miracles.
What you can do is hunt for the apps that wake your phone from deep sleep; these wakelocks are usually the main cause of battery drain. Use betterbatterstats for that - and read the forums. Use greenify to freeze the culprits.
Then you can take advantage of the various governors that come with the custom roms and experiment with them- but I would say that the default ondemand that comes with stock has a pretty good record for battery life.
And you could also try an extended battery - if you can live with a thicker phone.
If you want better battery life I suggest you get a custom kernel. Those usually allow you to underclock and undervolt the device. Meaning less consumption.
You could also try a custom rom. Those offer the customization you seek. From what I saw, Resurrection Remix rom seems to be very customizable.
