HD2's data cable.. is it micro USB?

I can't seem to find a usb to "whatever it is" wire selling..
is it a standard micro USB port?

yes... u r rite... itz a MICRO USB...

But it can't supply power to a USB device, so it can't be used like a PC USB port. It's only good for recharging and syncing.

so if i want to buy an additional wire, i look for a USB to MICRO USB wire right? no need to buy from HTC right?
cause i saw one usb that is smaller but it doesn't fit.. is there a MINI USB port too?

Actually better take the device with you. Sellers here told me there is like 7 different very similar connectors. However this one should be the standard micro USB, which is supposed to be universal charger/sync cable in the future (at least in EU).
And yes, of course, there is mini USB. And there even are more versions of mini USB, for example HTC used their own.

You had better use HTC cables. HD2 is microusb, but not all microusb cables are good for HD2. Like iPhone, it takes a large charging current, and many no brand cables cannot do it. I've got a third party cable that syncs only, but if charged from the PC, the HD2 will say that the charging current is too small. Battery actually drops when I connect HD2 to PC using this cable (because my options set it that backlight is always on when HD2 is connected). Other combinations are OK:
original cable + AC plug: charging OK
original cable + PC: charging OK
third party cable + AC plug: charging OK
third party cable + PC: "insufficient charging current"

Be careful with cables- you'd be better to buy the genuine HTC version.
Many USB/MicroUSB cables are for charging only, and don't have the data pins connected. Thats OK if you just want to charge it while you are away from your main PC or power supply.
You can also buy a miniUSB/MicroUSB adapter for charging using and older miniSUB charger, but again these don't have the data pins connected.

I bought a number of 3rd party USB to microUSB cables a month ago for sync and charging (office, PC, bedside charging), so far so good... no issues (maybe I'm lucky). The OmniaII uses the same connector, so I'm using the HTC car charger to charge both.

I bought Nokia's cable (for E71,N97,etc.) and it work just fine with charging from laptop. much cheaper than HTC in here.

i got a couple from ebay - arrived the next day. - charge/sync fine.

charger from iPhone
The iPhone charger coud be used for charging HD2. Just plug the microUSB cord instead of iPhones and ... voila. The same outputs

N86-8megapixel cable doesnt work..
So I managed to leave my HTC cable at work (2 days after getting the Telstra HD2 in OZ) and now I am on 4-5 days leave from work and really want to tinker with my phone. I think I may end up having to go back to work to collect the HTC cable - as below... challenge to get non-HTC cable to work.
I found that my wife's N86-8megapixel nokia has a similar micro-usb cable.
When connected to the PC the phone starts charging and the PC does the "doo-doop" sound a "appears" to connect to the phone, but active sync cannot detect the phone \ sync.
I see others have had success with nokia cables - I am wondering if there is something wierd going on.

So I just bought the Note 3 yesterday, nice beast.
I briefly talked about the new micro-USB cable with the seller, who explained that it was completely compatible with regular micro-USB cables (I was starting to be disappointed : just when everyone was adopting standard micro-USB, they had to change that !).
But, he added it was nevertheless recommended to use the new charger cable. We both wondered why exactly, what could happen if using only an old regular micro-USB cable. Time to achieve charging is different? Can it damage the battery or reduce its life ? Or is it just to get USB 3 high-speed transfer capability?
As I now have (after having Galaxy 1, 2, and 3) many micro-usb cable everywhere (office, car), I'd like to be able to safely use them.

Your original micro USB cables are perfectly OK to use. If using an mains AC charger, your phone will charge at whatever rate that charger charges at (500ma, 1a, 2a etc) irrelevant of whether you use a micro USB cable or micro USB 3 cable.
The only diffrerence really, is when charging from your computers USB ports. With the micro USB 3 cable, your phone will charge at a faster rate.
I havent even used my micro USB 3 charger that came with my phone yet, ive just been using my old chargers.

Nothing adverse happens, just use em like you would in your previous phones.

It won't hurt anything...
Your phone will charge slower and you data transfers will be slower. That is all.

What's with the charging cable?

Anybody figure out why the both charging port and charging cable that the phone comes with, have what looks like a double plug? One is a common micro USB port, and it seems that I can charge the phone with any old Android charger, as it will fit in this port. The other kind of looks like a USB port that you'd see on a digital camera. Just wondering what this is for, and why the provided cable has both.

It's a USB 3.0 port and cable. It allows for faster data transfer speeds when connected to a USB 3.0 port on a computer.
It's backwards compatible with USB 2.0, which is why you can also use the other cables with the phone.

Great post. I did used USB 2.0 in past. But after read your post i am appreciate for using USB 3.0 port and cable.. How can i get it from ?

You are half correct.... The right side is the micro usb port the left side is MHL 2.0, another version of HDMI out. You need a $13 adapter for this to work. Why Samsung put both on the same cable beats me.

Not true.
MHL works through the standard microUSB portion of the plug, just like it does on many other devices. The additional thinner side is to accommodate the changes for USB 3.0. The Note 3 was the first phone to use a USB 3.0 cable and have a USB 3.0 Micro-B port on the device, and Samsung is following suit with the S5. Samsung has been supporting MHL 2.0 since the S4, which only had a standard microUSB port, so there was no need to switch to a new port design just for that. And if you look at the MHL adapter you mentioned, it has a standard microUSB plug. The HTC One, HTC One Max, and HTC One (M8) (among other devices) also have MHL 2.0, and do so through a standard microUSB port. The extended port on the S5 (and Note 3) is for USB 3.0. It's not there for MHL.
And the Engadget review that you linked doesn't support your post, rather it just notes that the port supports MHL (which it supports it through the standard microUSB portion of the port).

Interesting. I got my $12 adapter in today and sure nuff, it is usb port only. Thanks, now I find this out I think that is stupid of Samsung to put the USB 3.0 extension as another port. Not that I use it that often....

There was no other way for them to add USB 3.0 functionality to the device while allowing backwards compatibility with microUSB 2.0. They wanted everyone to have the option of still being able to use their old microUSB 2.0 cables along with a different USB 3.0. I think it was definitely the right move instead of introducing a completely new plug that's not backwards compatible.
That said, a new USB 3.0 plug is coming that's not backwards compatible with USB 2.0 microUSB cables. It's been recently approved, but I'm not sure when we'll start seeing it on the devices.

[Q] USB3 cable from ebay

Hey, i just received my usb 3 cable (my s5 came with usb2...) and i think i got a fake one...

Now the problem is, when i plug cable in it USB options there is no "Media device (USB 3.0)" option... Which if i am not mistaken should appear?
I don't understand... 190 cables sold and no one is complaining... Maybe i am doing something wrong?

You might connect it to a USB 3.0 Port, are you sure that you connected it in 3.0 port?

Yes i am sure i connected to usb 3.0 port. I just found out that my external monitor connected via usb using same type cable as i ordered (but it's very short cable) and it is usb 3.0. Tried connecting with it and now i can see that option. So i guess that means i got fake cable...

Based from my experience, buying micro USB charging/data cable for Samsung is tricky since the wiring may not be the same as the normal USB cable. There should be 5 pins on the micro end, but sometimes there are just 4. But Samsung uses only 4 pins that might have been rewired. I'm not sure whether only Samsung does this or the same can be said of the other brands, but they may be the cause why there are microusb cables being sold that does only charging and no data function, and vice versa. And sometimes the pins may not be protruding out enough to make contact with the phone's charging pins.
I hope this helps.

You should try plugging in another USB 3.0 device such as a USB stick to determine whether the fault lies within your computer or the eBay cable!

micro 2 usb type c adaptor

I been using the adaptor that converts your micro USB to USB type c. It seems to work fine but I was wondering should I just buy whole new cables. Are the cables any different or just the plug ends different ?
I just want make sure I keep the fast charge compliance.
