Hi,
Got my N3 and Galaxy Gear yesterday. The Galaxy Gear *could* be interesting... but it doesnt show notification detail. E.g. if I get a new GMail email, it just gives me the GMail icon on the watch. When I click on the icon it tells me to look at the notification detail on the phone. This is basically useless and defeats the whole point of a Smart Watch surely? I.e. I don't know how the sender is, what the subject is etc etc without looking at it on my phone.
Am I doing something wrong?
Neil
I was really worried about this.
Gmail /FB/IG /Twitter etc will all take there sweet time( if ever) updating for compatibility of required.
If they require you to go and open the phone it defeats the purpose of the watch.
£280 to tell you that you got a message lol.
I believe that apps have to be made compatible with the Gear - just a guess, I can't be too sure.
Samsung Galaxy Gear review: my first day
For now, what you can read on the watch is infuriatingly limited: emails and text messages, yes, but not via the Gmail app.

Right now it's set to only show the Galaxy email on the Gear. It's out of Samsung hands if Gmail doesn't develop support for it.

That's bad.
This doesn't look like something that will really take off ( not this one anyway) so desire for support will be limited.
If it is based on Android and we can root and mod it, will be awesome and will fly off the shelves.
yea like using it for cctv surveillance.
It's a $300 spy cam/fashion statement. I didn't get one because what's the point of getting a 5.7" phone so you can do everything on a <2" screen?

Its a time and effort saver.
I have carpal tunnel and a good amount of notifications per day. Lots of them are just "whatever who cares" but some are very urgent. Pulling out my phone flipping the cover and doing my screen unlock everytime takes a toll on my wrists and dramatically increases the chances some jerk on the train bumps into me or I just get clumsy and drop it.
If I'm listening to music I can now swipe easily to change track rather than pulling out phone from pocket and doing the above.
During the winter this may save me a lot of effort and allow me to keep phone on an inside pocket rather than an easily accessible one where a pick pocket can easily access.
I'm not saying it's awesome or needed. But it does have many potential uses.
I stand by my opinion that the lack of support may kill this device. Early buzz will not be good I predict.

We will see how the device matures. Honestly I think the best feature of the Gear at this time is the ability to make calls. I could see where it would help you with carpal tunnel, but I thought the notifications so far were basically "You have an email" or "You have a text" and you couldn't read them. Or is that for gmail app only?
Im not biased or anything so don't look at the signature below this post but the Galaxy Gear is awesome... I know that with updates we'll get some of the things were missing
4.3 has notification APi. An app can be built to route detailed gmail notifications to gear. I'll write it.

NO CTS for me (had it once through 'thumb-texting', it was awful!), but I really agree that the hassle of dragging the phone out, pressing the button, often swiping, is a real overhead. I bought an S-View case clone just to avoid that. Having the Gear would be much, much easier. To justify $300 it would have to be special, but it is certainly useful. I'll probably wait for a reduction and/or deal.

It was not bad (the CTS) so when I found out the cause I bought a proper phone with a physical keyboard. It went away in about a week, which was a huge relief.
Good time of year (historically) to get gadget fever, anyway!
Let me get this straight. The Gear is not going to let you preview a text message or email when you received one? Currently I have the Pebble watch and it is very useful for this exact reason. I planned on upgrading to the Gear, because I felt it was a given that it would let you preview your messages.
Can those of you who have it just confirm this for me, because if it doesn't let you do this it is absolutely worthless; I have no desire to use it as a phone or to take pictures with it; those are novelty ideas that I think people will find they use at first because it is new but won't use over long term.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
That's already been confirmed several times here and in all the youtube review videos... only text message preview and samsung email app supported so far... hopefully updates will come for other apps that address that issue and give this thing more support.

Have you seen the BS Fart App? http://www.bsfartapp.com
It supports farting on demand, on time delay and using Text Messages or the web browser. ...Apparently it has it's own HTTP Web Server so you can just WiFi over to it and fart away.
The app also lets you do one other thing via Text Message, you can have the phone with BS Fart App installed on it call some other phone. ...This allows you to eavesdrop on your mark, so you can wait for the perfect moment before making the phone fart.
Oh yeah, and it has an iPhone like kinetic list interface. But it also works fine on none touch devices.
I'm unemployed, so please pay the reasonable $1.99 I'm asking for it. I wrote the app entirely in C#, so it requires the 3.5 framework.
Does this work properly on QVGA devices running WM6.1 or 6.5?
omg this is completely senseless..
but good fun in it's very own way somehow.
Great start, now, replace the Farting with something useful and you have a great app!
wow what a waist of a great app this could be a great app menu system, gps location ,all for farts
you application is more complicated than most applications. too bad its still just a fart application
The application really looks like some serious software. I think you should use this software as a base and create something more useful
Oh, and you might consider fart by twitter, a social web feature for your fart app (e.g. send farts to facebook) etc. ;-)
brien
love the fart machine app you made. best 2 dollars i ever spent.
i have right now only one issue....it is when i look at the webserver ip address all i get is 2 numbers.
see pic for example i posted below for my error i have.
i am running an at&t fuze aka touch pro device which is a vga display.
it also doesnt place nicely when i open in landscape mode either.
like i said before great app so far.

Outstanding.
Yours is the only (out of hundreds of) software plugged on my site for which there is no free or shareware version. That speaks for itself in terms of how impressive your work is and how awesomely talented you are.
As with Chainfire, I imagine and hope your efforts result in at least some modest prosperity and of course in your case satisfaction from all the laughs and awkward moments you're creating around the world, two bucks at a time.
One demographic you'll touch, of which I'll belong once I whip out the debit card, is those who have no intention of using your program for its intended purposes but just want to witness firsthand the complexity, sophistication and finesse of your work rather than just watching the video.

Yep, I've been emailing them for support... they responded to the first email, last week, and nothing else since, despite repeated attempts to contact them. I'm wondering if something happened to the dude.
Folks, either something has happened to this guy, or we've been had. After a couple replies from him when I first started trying to use the app a few weeks ago, he has not responded to any of my emails in the last two weeks.
Has anyone had any success at all getting this app to start on a Touch HD? It will not start on mine. And I already paid for it. I know 2 bucks is minimal, but that's hardly the point. A couple weeks ok, Brien (the developer) promised to send me a debug version of the app so we could diagnose why it doesn't work on my phone. I've heard nothing since, despite four emails practically begging him for a reply. The last one I sent is basically just asking him if he's even alive.
I have gotten nothing from him. Purchased last week, sent emails, nothing.
I know people might not answer this, but what the hell, you never know.
I'm a programmer; good old fashioned programmer. That's what I do. I've coded in Assembler, PASCAL, RPG II/III, COBOL, C/C++, SQR (a DB language), Easytreive (mainframe), CICS (more mainframe), JCL (mainframe "language"), JAVA and now Android.
Currently unemployed due to crappy market and my location. I've coded a couple of apps and they are on the market selling, albeit slowly.
My problem is, I'm NOT creative LOL IMO, I can code the pants off anything, but I'm just not good at coming up with ideas. I think it's that "left brain, right brain" thing!
Anyone care to throw out some app ideas? Seems like I think of stuff, but it's "been there, done that" on the market. I have my own hosted site and ability to store 10 gigs of database data if that helps.
I'm not interested in doing games or themes or wallpapers (remember, NOT creative!) LOL
I'm new at coding and I have ideas coming out of my ears, so to speak, but I don't have the means (knowledge) to make them a reality. How familiar are you with the android sdk and APIs? I'm kinda new at this, having only released one app into the market. I would like the help of an experienced coder. Check out my website www.fufurinnovations.blogspot.com to see what I'm working on. Thanks in advance
I am looking for an app like Mail Tones for Blackberry that alerts you with a different tones for selected email contacts. By default the notification tone for all incoming emails is just one for all. I tried Mail Alerts but it is very unreliable. Maybe you like this idea? This is a very helpful app in BB since it lets you know when an important email comes up without looking at the screen. Weird that there is only one app in the Market and it just doesn't work.
And what about another app like a camera add-on that lets you level all your pictures using the inclinometer and allows you to take pictures having always the horizon line leveled.

I need, and many android users will agree, that sms messages do not need to be kept forever. I want an app, an addon, an alteration whatever that deletes old messages up to a set time period... 7 days, 14 days, 31 days etc.
If I had a text from o2 highlighting the fab new offers I ignore it and 30 days later its automatically deleted!

I'd love an app that emulates the standard iPod USB protocols well enough to control my Android music player from my car stereo.

I actually thought that the app called Theodolite was going to do this but it was actually a triangulation app. In any case, it comes with an inclinometer that allows you to measure the angle of the camera in x and y. It has a measurement of angles kind of like the vision from Terminator, very cool, but then if you take the picture, those measuring things stay in the picture and the picture itself comes out at a lower resolution so it is not really a photography app, its a measurement app. It could be cool to have a bip once you get the camera/phone leveled with the horizon line.
Cameras nowadays don't come with this feature? You can then sell them the program...
you can help me out with my music app im only decent at concepts

How about an app that is able to identify if someone in the area is running android and to be able to strike up a gtalk convo via invite. idk if that'd be possible.
WOW! Thanks to all the repliers (is that a word? LOL). Oh my, there's an idea right there for my database space...a dictionary or thesarus!
Some very, very good ideas out there and I DO appreciate them very much. I can definitely see 2 or 3 apps that I can start working on.
Keep the ideas coming and I'll get my fingers going on development of some of the replies up to this point.
Thanks again!

One app i really think is missing is a good working RSS-reader which makes it possible not to juggle between the RSS-reader and a browser.
An example would be a super simple reader like Google Reader that can open up the posts in background inside the reader, having the same possibilities as a browser.

Yes, I guess I should have mentioned that ...my bad.
Of course I would be willing to split profits on a joint-effort project. And, I'm terrible with graphics design and the like. And sometimes, the user interface can make or break the applications (people like "Wow, cool" or flashy app interfaces).
I'm more of a "meat and potatoes" guy; input your data, get info back LOL
So yes, I'm willing to pursue a multi-person project as I think it's beneficial to both parties, not only monetarily, but the possibility of learning from each other.
Thanks,

Pulled yesterday the update from the network with the famous trick.

Gmail push mail is working but with a huge dealy comparing it with android or iOs mail delivering. Slow
Multitasking is working only with MS app, not third party. Maybe the apps are not upadated yet but... it sucks at the moment
Social network integration is good with facebook but very complicated to use, not intuitive. Twitter is not supported and the twitter app just plain sucks... no background tweet pull neither push. A mess
Live tiles are nice but daily briefing stays static
Do not know about battery usage
Bing music search is nice but it would be nicer with the possibility of downloading songs directly
I like marketplace, fewr apps than competitor but overall good quality
IT MISS A FAST DIAL OPTION... this is an epic fail... there is no smart dialing too... so calling someone who is not in the start screen takes like 6 or 7 click. fail
If this update eas released one year ago it would be good and efficent... comparing my mango omnia7 with my sammy sgs2 is like stealing sweets to a kid...

How is having two "apps" to switch too Witch is identical? And when your in marketplace, going deeper into "related" and I want to search..where is the button? I have to hit back a zillion times before it appears? Oh no wait I have a actual button on my phone for that..lets press that..BING wtf? What I'm not seeing is if it can be used as a dialer for your phone, so you can just leave it in your pocket and make and receive calls like the Gear.
What do you guys think? I'm tempted to get it just to play around with.

Doing some further reading, yes you can initiate a call to your phone with it, woot! It also has music over bluetooth and local storage. It looks like it has no speaker/mic so you have to use a headset with it, boo, but that's ok.

D'oh. I missed it, I went straight down to the pictures. Either that or the page didn't load completely the first time. Either way, thank you!
That's not a bad price point at all... maybe a mini server or media player...
Feature phone software, bleh.
Although I guess for 100 bucks you can't expect it to run Android.
Edit: Hmm, just noticed no where does it say there's a speaker built in...guess you have to use a headset to use it as a phone.
Also only compatible with Android 2.3-4.0. Doesn't say it works with newer.

Strange, I was also surprised by that 4.0 rather then 4.x reference. And I think you are right about headphone 3.5mm jack as the only way to listen to the music. Would have been great if they would include a camera in there.
Is it ok to say that it looks kinda...ugly?
Or is it just me?

Good Lord. I'm off tonight. I thought it RAN android. In this case, I'd say the price point may be a little high.

Haha, first thing that crossed my mind when i saw it.
Dunno why but personally i find most smart watches just tend to look either dull, or just plain awful. Maybe it's because of the space they have to work with? Dunno :/
You guys realize it's a phone? It might be nice to have as a backup phone, or if I just want a tiny phone. It doesn't run apps, but I never had much use for apps on a 1.5" screen.
It's interesting, I may grab one just to play around with. It seems to have AT&T bands. I don't plan on using it like a watch though, it's too ugly like that. I'd just stick it in my pocket or clip it on.

We're fully aware. It's just between recent offerings like the Omate Truesmart and previous offerings like every chinese watch phone out there, this one seems like too little too late to really make sense right now.
If you want a cheap feature-phone watch check out what's available to get a style you like. This one is pretty big and ugly for what it does.

Thanks, do you have any links to any watch phones that work with AT&T like this one does? I did a google search and didn't find much, Chinese tech seems kind of hard to find on the internet.

I sort of want the microphone... it's a super tiny phone that was on indiegogo for like $50 when it launched. GPS enabled for a bit more, I think.

So I got one and got to say this thing is a perfect companion for a phone at work. Built in mic allows you to answer on your wrist and be like I'll call you back it also has Bluetooth audio out and wireless headset support. Weird thing is contacts and messages won't work without a sim has to have one active or not I'm on Verizon so its pointless to try lucky I had art laying around and it vibrates!! This thing is sweet to be cheap!!!

From the watch description:
Smart Sync Function: Can sync with smart phone, downloading phonebook and call history (iOS 4.0+ and Android 2.3+) to the device. When using Android 2.3+ OS, download and install the WiMe NanoSmart APK on the Android device and the NanoSmart will sync with the Android device (Google calendar events, new Gmail notification, call history, phonebook, sent/received SMS).
Have you tried to install WiMe NanoSmart?
I'm on 4.3 AOKP linario I can't say its bougus but the contacts sync but....... With out each and every number having the country code in it it refuses to call or message weird right? Gmail hasn't worked or calendar. I refuse to downgrade for it. I use this to get away with texting and calling at work via mini Bluetooth headset and a beanie lol.

Just wish it wasn't $350 for a 1st gen device in a soon to be crowded and lower priced market. I already have a MetaWatch Frame ($200), and would rather wait for Google to release something that I know will be supported for a while then drop the money on something that may or may not be getting new and improved apps a year from now. That being said, the Mirasol screen looks awesome and I like the overall look and features of the watch. For $250 I would have already pre ordered it, $350 is overpriced.

I hear what you're saying about smart watches in general are coming out overpriced but I believe that the Toq is comparable due to the added wireless charger that makes up for the additional cost. That is a feature which none of the others have at this time anyway. And believe me I am not trying to justify their initial high costs because I too think all of the smart watches in general should start at a lower cost margin than what they have started with when they first came out.
This watch is already available for purchase at USD399, anybody here getting it? The deal breaker with this watch is that it has no Ingress Protection (IP) rating. Yes, it is not waterproof. You spend a lot of money into something that is not waterproof, that is so not right.

I've had mine since last Friday, and I must say I've been pleasantly surprised. It just works, no issues, functionality is straightforward. Notifications work, not crazy bells and whistles, just a well thought out product.

It doesnt run android so my guess would be no. It wouldnt be able to run the apps
A reviewer on Amazon stated that in order to adjust the bracelet you need to cut it?!? What's up with that?
Btw, there is another AppsComm A1 smartwatch that will debut with Mirasol display. So hopefully its a start of more good things to come.

Qualcom states it does. It is probably very well hidden under the oem launcher and apps.
Just got my watch, any questions, ask away. I've had the pebble for about 3 months, the SW2

Lol, I guess I should have mentioned that part. Without a Doubt the Toq is best out of Box. Its companion app has everything I needed (Except Tasker integration) without having to buy and/or wait for 3rd party apps. If the SDK for the Toq is release soon and Dev start cranking out apps, the Toq is a guaranty to be the Top Smartwatch in my opinion.
Can you check what brightness level you have while outside in day light and also how long does it last on a single charge,
Cheers

Brightness level outside?? Not sure what exactly you mean but outside in a sunny Miami day I can read my Toq watch as easily as I can read a piece of paper. :victory:
Battery life has been amazing I'm at 5 days with 14% battery left. I haven't shut it off once in the last 5 days.

WOW, you gotta be kidding me? That is very impressive!!! Do you get a lot of email/txt/call notification during the day? Also, do you unpair it at night or keep it paired up 24-7? I know with my MetaWatch once the watch is far away from the phone, my phone keeps searching for it non-stop which drains battery on my Note 2 lol!!! So, every night I unpair my MW and N2.
Also forgot to ask, from the pictures, can you tell if Toq is tinner than SW2 or not? It definitely looks thinner than Pebble.
But can it....
Can it run google maps? I want to be able to wear it while I'm on my motorcylce and glance at it once in a while instead of only having audio telling me how close I am. Thanks and congrats on the new watch!
