Camera features on AOSP ROM vs TW - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody. This question is for those who have had a previous Note. When flashing a stock based ROM, were all of the camera features lost. Im pretty sure CM won't be able to get the camera to shoot 4K video, but I was curious to see what else you lose out on besides some s pen features. Thanks

First and final bump

You lose everything Samsung added to Android. It's like you have a 5.7 inch Nexus.
And yes, you do lose all the TW camera features.

[Q] Which ROM are you using? Which are ready?

Hi all,
So I just upgraded from a GSIII to the GS4. I wasn't planning on it, but it happened. I didn't particularly want the S4, but now I have it. It's very slick, thin, screen is brilliant. Honestly, I didn't like the screen on the SIII, I preferred the screen of the E4GT even though it was smaller.
Anyways, I am rooted and flashed AOKP Milestone 2. It's very nice, seems stable. I was on CM10.1.2 nightlies on the GSIII.
I know they are both AOSP based, but I wonder how they compare otherwise? I read some reviews of some showstopper bugs with CM10.1 builds for this phone, so I went with AOKP.
Now, I know the S4 has IR, and I know that it is not supported on any AOSP ROMs. I didn't have it on the SIII so I likely won't miss it. What do you guys think.. is support coming? Is this something we'll eventually see in upstream AOSP? Or is this a Samsung only thing that we'll have to wait for someone to port over from TouchWiz?
Other than that, it seems to me I just now have a faster, bigger, thinner Galaxy.
I really like AOSP so hopefully the extra features will come along for the S4. I don't really like the look of TW ROMs altogether.
I hear the IR blaster is being worked on for AOSP and was even working on liquidsmooth. If you want any TW features you might want to keep an eye on the Google Edition ROM because it actually runs the tw framework and can have features added. Here is the GE ROM

Interesting. I'll definitely keep an eye on that one.

Any TW user who has moved to AOSP and hadn't regretted since?

I don't know why I am asking this, but maybe because I can't use LP because Xposed isn't compatible with it yet, I mean for TW based ROMs that is, or something else, but I see that a lot of people are using AOSP based ROMs and even happy about it. I personally like stock Android too but for Note series they have always been a mess and either this or that never really did work fine, and I have used that Cyanogen thingy before, the experience was nothing short of awful!
So I am creating this topic, asking to the TW users only, who like TW, has any one of you moved to AOSP based ROMs and finding it good, or better than TW to put it simply? Does everything work, I mean S-Pen related features and all that?
I personally like TW interface. I'm currently using Lollipop TW and i find it really stable. I have also tried teamsek lollipop AOSP. It is stable but it lacks some samsung features like S-pen, S-cover and all those small sensor (smart screen, air view) options that TW software has. The latest version of AOSP that i have tried was teamsek 5.2 i think and it was really nice but battery life wasn't really good. But it might have changed in recent versions. So i suggest that you make nandroid backup and try AOSP and if you don't like it just restore your previous firmware.
Also there are apps on playstore that can enable some S-pen features on AOSP.
Hope i helped

I kinda qualify - I use and like Alliance ROM LP version - 7.1 currently. It is highly configurable and fast. The 'kinda' is because I normally swap to Nova Launcher as soon as a ROM is installed.
But I also use, more as time goes on, Temasek's LP CM12 build - currently 8.4 just installed. I'm liking it more and more as I use it - no Samsung bloat and the S-Pen beta from XDA does all I want with my pen and it's being upgraded pretty regularly as more features are added. I can't think of anything a stock-based ROM has that I don't have in Android 5 from Temasek.
Now if only there was a dual boot kernel around for the Note 3.

So with this ROM (Temasek) there is no problem you notice which isn't there on TW ROMs? Like poor call volume, crappy camera photo quality, the display going yellowish etc.? Basic functions, or the problems with basic functions scare me most.

You can try the one at http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/app-app-samsung-devices-provided-stylus-t3000448 - first post has email to join the beta program.
Also there is CM S Pen Addon from Play - requires root.

None that I have had. There was an issue with the AOSP cam I think where the video didn't work but changing the setting from 4K back to 1080 fixed that. No display issues I even seen mentioned - that was a problem with early AMOLED screens I thought...?
Only issue I have had is my custom ringtone and notify mp3's keep reverting back to default ones on reboot. Most annoying but hardly a deal-killer.
It's fast and smooth and Temasek and his crew are responsive to issues and good at their work.

Best Custom Rom for Note 4?

Howdy,
I've just rooted my snapdragon note 4 and I'm now trying to decide between the many great look custom ROMS available.
I prefer something that is close to stock so I don't loose the access to the features unique to the Note 4 but at the same time I like additions that make the device faster, better battery and more functional. A ROM with enhanced audio features would be useful as well.
CM12 looks good but it sounds like the camera issues have not been resolved and I would miss some of the S-pen features.
What custom ROM do you guys use or recommend?
Thanks.

[POLL] TouchWiz ROM or CM13/12 ?

Hi I've created this thread to know which ROM S4's users use
Feel free to justify your vote !
I use touchwiz ROM (note5 ported rom) because it has some useful features like private mode ,ultra powersaving mode and also because it looks beautiful and I prefer it also because I never found any cynogen build which had good quality camera ...I always felt as if the quality of pictures I take is really bad in cyanogen
Im using a debloated Stock TW ROM with Root. Its okay until I decide to buy a new phone. I tried all the CM, modded TW etc. ROMs but they all had to much problems (Bluetooth, Camera quality etc. with CM, freezing sensors with modded tw roms).
Im using note 5 port from ale95. Its decent. And like because the features. I mean why having a videocall capable phone if we are not going to use it? With cm you dont have it. And the camera....afs.

cm 13 NIGHTLY version, haves no 4 k camera.

I got this phone from my brother. Of course I always rooted all my phones. Well this phone is far out one my best. Easy to root, even flashing to stock rom. While Im using the stock 6.0 version, I thought it drain the battery life. Had to change battery to use on a full day. It could be I use WIFI alot on this phone so thats explain it. While i change to cm13 NIGHTLY version, the battery life increased and I always love cm version, dude of safety reasons. While I been using this rom as daliy use, one thing I hate is you cannot take picture or record 4k with this camera. Plus its faulty. While I use the flashlight on this, everytime I put flash on, its crash. Every time. I look how to get Lg g3 stock cam on this but lookin the answers on the forums said is no go.
I tried Open Cam, 4k Cinema and etc. The onething is I want to storage on the sd card. But most the camera apps out there cannot do it.
Do anyone reccomend any app suited to cm13 version of this phone?
I was using cm 13 official nightlies. It's great, plus the aosp interface is beautiful. But I like taking pictures, a lot. And I couldn't handle the fact that my camera's pictures downgraded quality-wise.. flashed the Google camera, but it always over exposes (compare with the snap camera, and you'll see). So I gave up and flashed Fulmics ROM. Got more features on my camera (slow mo and so) and the performance is actually better. And it doesn't heat up like it did on the stock rom and the cm 13 (bc it does at times). It's just great. So that's my experience

From a guy who, since 2012 always flashes aosp based ROMs on his devices, on this device one just doesn't work for me. Plus, the ux 5.0 isn't as bad had told

No AOSP or CM rom will have the same camera performance as stock based Roms ...
I am using Snap Camera HDR from the play store that has a LG mode in the settings and 4K video.
I would say that's the best third party for AOSP Roms
