Hey guys,
I'm currently running Android Revolution HD 6.1.4 and I want to move to a MIUI based ROM, the only thing stopping me is that I want to keep some specific SMS and MMS messages but I can't find a way to backup AND restore MMS messages. Some claim to do it but I have heard of people having issues going between different ROMs.
Can anyone link me to a guide or app that can allow me to backup and restore SMS and MMS messages that will work going from Sense to MIUI?
I am unable to buy apps so if you suggest an app please consider this.
Thank you and sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Use mybackup root. You can download it in market.

Every time i've changed ROM i have made a backup of all SMS on my phone. I use Sms backup+. Unfortunately I'm a new member and I can't post any link to this application, but it's very easy to find it on Android Market.
It uploads all your text messages to your gmail account and afterwards once you've installed your new ROM, you just download the app again and reset all the messages! Works very well, and also it's free!
Good Luck!
I use smsbackuprestore its simple, free and works with any from and any SMS application, even worked when I moved from MIUI on my inspire to my galaxy nexus
even Titanium Backup pro is brilliant, works all the time for me
Afaik, tit backup doesn't backup the messages itself. Anyway, when I restore a backup (full backup ofc), my sms messages are not restored
I use SMSbackup & Restore seperately... I don't know if this backups mms messages as well

Why are U unable to buy apps?
Titanium Backup Pro works great, and you can backup too many other things, such as your score in games, some of your configuration settings...
running smsbackup+ here to,
run the app, backup to gmail, and then restore, worked perfectly for me. no matter what rom i am using.
i solved the massive amount of sms being restored back after a couple of months by simply assigning them a different label in gmal. so im still able to find them if i need, but wont overfill my phone.
I use gosms to make a backup file in my SD card, install new rom and then gosms to restore all SMS from backup.
Yours truly.
SMS Backup+ is a very great choice. Easy upload of your files to your gmail account. Hassle free.!! Do try it.
Here is the link
I also use SMS Backup+. It works perfectly fine.
The only one I know that backs up both sms and mms including pictures is Sprite Backup. Check it out.
I removed the original SMS app and installed Go SMS pro. There are built-in backup/restore functions in Go SMS pro.
I always use SMS Backup & Restore, incredibly easy and quick to get them off your sd card and back into your SMS app

I used Mybackup pro, used from gingerbread sense to ICS, and back lol.
I'm also using SMS Backup+ . No problems so far
I always use a combination of titanium backup and mybackup. Just back up all your data with both of them, then after restoring with titanium fill up what is left out with mybackup..

I'm using MyPhoneExplorer for backing up sms at the moment.
Working good for me so far.
Always used mybackup pro. Works like a charm for me.

Don't know if this is an Omnirom 4.4 problem or an app problem.
I backup all SMS using the app but when I restore them they don't appear in the messaging app.
If the app is open I can see the messages start to appear but when I exit out of it and go back in the messages are all gone.
If I restore them again it just tells me all the saved messages are duplicates so I'm guessing its saving the messages to the phone like it's meant to.
New messages all work fine and they are all there to view with no problems.
If anyone can give me ay suggestions it would be very helpful.
I have tried this in other messaging apps and I get the same results.

I have never used SMS Backup+ - but Ritesh Sahu's "SMS Backup and Restore" works for me.
The restore process only works with backup/restore apps that are KitKat aware.

Thanks a lot

For me also, SMS Backup+ doesn't work, so I used SMS Backup and Restore, no problem, app works very well. The backup is recorded in internal memory or external SD

I had the same issue, and a little googling led me to the apps bug tracker. So, I assume the dev is aware and looking to update their app to work with kitkat / 4.4

Yeah, same here. However, I could restore SMS from Titanium Backup.
Doing that triggered a 'do you want to make Titanium Backup your standard SMS app' query for Every restored SMS. After a few I agreed to.
I'm guessing it's some new SMS app standard that SMS backup+ hasn't implemented yet. I've mailed that developer about it, but it looks like it's going to be a problem for makers of SMS backup apps... Unless a workaround specifically for them will be found.

Yep, I didn't have all my SMS backed up, so here's what I'll do today: go back to omnirom 3.3, restore SMS from sb+, backup in titanium, get back to 4.4, restore SMS. Yay.

Yup. Google announced this change to SMS well in advance of KitKat - http://phandroid.com/2013/10/14/sms-changes-coming-to-android-4-4-kitkat/
I m getting the exact same problem with SMSBackup&Restore on OmniROM 2014-07-28.
I managed to resolve this problem by enabling the "Write SMS/MMS" option in "Apps permissions" under System - Apps - "SMS Backup+".
Hey everyone!
I'm currently using Paranoid Android 4.4.2 beta 12/15 and I was wondering, which app do you use to backup SMS & MMS messages? I used to use MyBackup Pro but the only bad thing is when the app backs up the messages they all get their dates reset to the date that you backed up. I tried backing up Hangouts with titanium and restored data after doing a fresh install and the messages appear and when I continue texting all the messages disappear. Go Backup doesn't seem to work either.
Should I just do a Nandroid backup, install the fresh updated beta and then restore my data? Or would that still be considered a 'dirty' flash and restore some of the old files from the previous build (like whatever was fixed in the new beta would be replaced with the files nandroid backup)?

I backup my messages with Titanium Backup. Has worked great across every ROM I've ever used on any phone.
Hangouts archive... use to use that ^^
I used to use this: http://goo.gl/Kn4Vp but I've moved on to hangouts.

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried Titanium and the messages restore but then with a reboot they disappear. Sometimes I don't have to reboot, If I text after the restore the messages just "disappear"
Try Sms backup & restore on play

Which restore method are you using? XML or Snapshot?
I'm currently running CM10.1.3 (Android 4.2.2) and I'm having problems transferring messages when flashing any 4.4 ROMs. I tried numerous apps like SMS Backup, Titanium, My Backup Pro but none are restoring my SMS messages (not too bothered about MMS). I've tried ROMs with both Hangouts and other message apps and clearing said caches after restoring but still nothing.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm lead to believe that Titanium Backup would backup and restore sms messages. I've never tried tho.

Are you sure about Titanium Backup? I always use it to restore message!
Try XML backup with it.
Open Titanium Backup, go to MENU on the top right corner, then scroll down to Backup data to XML, then choose Message (SMS & MMS).
Then when you want to restore them use the Restore data from XML.
It works flawlessly countless time, at least for me.

Titanium Backup is one of the most useful apps in the play store, my first paid app I actually bought, after using the cracked version for a while. And as a flashaholic, you'd imagine how much I need to use it
So yeah, it's your ultimate backup tool.

One question, since you used it to restore sms's in kitkat. Did you need to set titanium backup as default SMS app?
App which I used "SMS Backup&Restore" needed to be set as default SMS app before restoring.

Nope. Titanium handled the restoring process independently.

What app are you using to backup or transfer your SMS messages
Did you try alternate restore? And enable logging so you have something for the dev?

I tried MyBackup and also SMS backup and Restore.
Sms backup and restore is the only one that seems to be working but it restores all my messages in a weird order.
Any other suggestions
I use GoSms, there is a back up within the app, which backups and restores SMS & mms...what i did was transfer the GoSms folder over to the new phone via computer and restore within the GoSms app... Profit...
