I like Amazon tablet builds combined with custom roms. If it were not for custom roms, I would probably not consider buying another Amzon tablet. But theses babies will be fast. Each of the new HDX tablets houses a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU and an Adreno 330 graphics processor. Comes stock with Amazon's bloatware 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Amazon is now taking pre-orders on all Kindle Fire HDX's. First KFHDX 7" with wifi only will ship October 18. It does not look like 8 Gig will be an option at this time (if at all.)

Wi-Fi (32GB) $269 $429
Wi-Fi (64GB) $309 $479

Yeah. No 8gb. They are not necessary though. In the long run you will find yourself wanting more space.

I'm sure it will be some time before an HTX gets rooted and longer for a 2nd bootloader exploit. Time will tell.
Looks like Amazon is ahead of schedule. At least they have charged my card today and they usually do it, when shipment is processed/you can no more cancel it or change in a simple way.
And my HDX is marked now as Shipping Now. I suppose it should left Amazon today or Monday as latest.
Hope so.
I got mine delivered yesterday. Great device. Even tried Mayday support and I was overall happy and impressed.

Definitely the HDX is much improved over the HD. The screen is the major difference but performance is obvious as well.
Lucky man!! I have doubt about 7 or 8.9 inch.. Really I like both.. The custom rom is the more important point. It is better than the new nexus 7..so... I will got one. The multiwindows like samsung tab will be perfect!

Depends on your definition of perfect. Lack of SD card slot, lack of micro HDMI and bloatware Amazon OS based on old Jellybean version are major drawbacks, IMO.

I just got an 8.9! That new financing deal amazon did is great, i can easily budget it and get one quick! I just flashed my first kindle fire for my girlfriend and she's using it like a brand new google tablet. I will say this though, this thing gets HOT with standard usage. It's so incredibly thin too, i'm so scared of breaking it. I've sideloaded things like chrome and a few other essentials that aren't on the amazon store and even found a way to get that 5 dollar credit by installing on another device. Cool stuff.

Just looked at a few reviews for the 10.1 tab 2. Most of them said get something else. $400 you can get a number of better tablets with a lot more features and quad core. Maybe I"ll stick with the excite....
Get the tab 2 7in for 250.
Or if you have 400 to spare, the Asus TF300T.

Almost every review I read said the original tab 10.1 is better. They said if it had been $349 it could have been a winner but at $400 its way way over priced for what you get. Its like Samsung took 2 steps back instead of forward. They also said the dual core cpu in the tab 2 is very under powered for most stuff. Wow very disappointed :-(
The omap on the tab 2 7in is not under powered. It is a dual core CPU. It runs better than other processors that are clocked higher. For 250 right now you aren't going to get more bang for your buck than the tab 2 7in. Omap runs better than s3 in my rezound.
In the past month I've had five tablets, all seven inch and this by far is the best.
Bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Wifi on Craigslist for 150. It was okay but limited to froyo.
Traded that for a Nook Color and I hated the screen. ICS ran okay though.
Sold the Nook and bought a Kindle Fire at best buy for 200. It was awesome compared to the Nook.
Returned that and got an Acer A100 Iconia Tab for 250. It was sweet and real quick.
Returned that and got this and 10 bucks back.
I'm happy now and I'm keeping this. The wife thinks I'm crazy but I just wanted something I'd be happy with.

I definitely agree -- this device is the best bang for the buck right now. I stepped up from a Kindle Fire to this for several reasons:
- External Storage
- GPS
- Bluetooth
- ICS that works out-of-the box!
- Volume buttons (yes, seems odd to list this, but coming from a Kindle Fire with no buttons, it makes a difference)
No regrets. All devices have drawbacks - at least for this one the hardware is there and software updates can hopefully address some of the weaknesses over time.
Should be in stores July 16th. Amazon is offering up to $250 credit for TF101 in good condition ... tempting.
Hoping Microcenter near me will have one in stock to play with, see if it is that much better than the TF101 (2 of which) I have

I have decided that since I already have two 10" tf101s, I really want to get the Nexus 7 right now to replace my tf101 as my "on-the-go" tablet.
I read the iconia 700 review, and it seems the Tegra3 is still a bit weak for driving the 1920x1200 screen as smoothly as the 1280x800 tablets.. so I will hold off on getting a new 10" tablet until the next round of 1920x1200 (or maybe 2560x1600??) comes out with beefier GPUs. I'd gladly take one with the new MALI405 GPU and a Cortex A15 based CPU.
I want one but can't afford it

I really want one, but I have the same concerns about the GPU. There is a reason why Apple (not that I like Apple) is using dual core, instead of quad, with a huge GPU in their new tablet. I was not at all impressed with the Tegra 2 GPU, and while the the Tegra 3 is better, it's not good enough to push that high resolution. Since the Tegra 4 will both have new CPU and GPU architecture, I may just wait. I'm only buying the Tf700 for the resolution, and I'll need a good GPU to push that.
I like hi-tech stuffs and have no problem affording the TF700. Currently having 1GTablet, 2x TF101s, 1x Nook Color, 1x Galaxy Player 4. I have enough Android fun ! I am waiting to try the next Asus Windows RT device.
My favorite TF101 has satisfied all my real needs.
I'll be selling my TF101 for the Nexus 7, I want to get a good taste of google-driven goodness for once, and this one actually looks like something I'd buy, unlike the earlier Nexus devices.

My Nexus 7 is on order. Originally I was gong to get the 700 and eBay my TF101, but decided to keep the TF and get a N7. Tegra 3 just doesn't impress me enough especially when combined with the high resolution of the 700's screen, to replace my TF.

Are you still waiting for it from Play? I just went to Sam's club and bought mine yesterday. I'm going to give the one I ordered from the play store to my sister (When it comes). Google really has a problem shipping devices. I was mad when I found out GameStop and Sam's Club was selling the tablet before Play Store shipped theirs.

Yes, I ordered from the Play Store and I'm waiting. But I ordered it after the release, not a pre-order. It's not a big deal. I'm not in a hurry. I own 2 other tablets, and 4 PC's. The N7 is just another toy.
FYI - I was already able to order both the TF700 and the TF700 dock from a big name retailer! Won't be delivered until Wednesday though. Yes - I know that it will be officially released on Monday, but...

I WISH I was gonna buy the TF700... I'm lucky enough as it is to have this TF101. I've only had it for a couple months and I was honestly kind of surprised it still had such a large userbase still, as in my mind it seems pretty low powered (though I may be incorrect...)

I don't think it exists. The current trade-in value is up to $209. I don't know where the OP got $250.
The Amazon Kindle Fire was my first tablet and a great one as well. Thanks to awesome developers such as JackpotClavin, HashCode, Lithium, and everyone else the Kindle Fire is a great choice for budget and size conscience individuals.
Anyway, I just purchased a 4G LTE Motorola Xoom 32 GB on Ebay for $200 and sold my Kindle Fire for $150. I recently realized that the Xoom was a Google Experience Device and is going to be updated to Jelly Bean by Google!
Once again thanks everyone for making the Kindle Fire such a great device!
that thing is, heavy lol. I had one, a looooong time ago. briefly. enjoy it

That's a surprise, considering they sell new for $199 in the USA. I got them from an Australian importer for $261 including case and adaptor.
Even with the next generation kindle tablets on the horizon people are buying up kindle fires on eBay. I suggest if any of you want to upgrade to sell now before the kindle fire 2 comes out and drops the resale value of the original.
I'm thinking about picking one of these up tomorrow if the sale works out. Note that this sale was supposed to be last week, but they postponed it until tomorrow due to some technical difficulty.

I would be new to the Kindle Fire, but not Android. I have a Nexus 7, Evo LTE, and have owned and sold several other phones and tablets. This one interests me because it's a cheap option for the kids, and I would also like to take advantage of the free monthly kindle lending library book with my Prime account. The most important thing is to get the Play store on there so I can take advantage of my purchases. It looks like I can root the fire, install the play store, and a market opener app, unroot, and still keep the existing OS. I believe the original OS is required to use the extra Prime features (and also a couple of kids apps I've found exclusive to the kindle). I may eventually go with a CM10.1 based ROM in the future, but I would like to at least try the stock OS for the Prime features first.
One hesitation I have is the lack of storage for kids movies. I've seen the nook tablet refurbs for $80 over the holidays, which I know has 1GB ram and SD card slot, but the kf seems to have better software support both from the stock software to the custom development.
So, what do you guys think? Is this the best option for a sub-$100 tablet for kids?
If you install a custom rom (CM10.1) will the amazon market still recognize the tablet as a kindle fire, and can you still install the kindle fire edition apps?
UPDATED: Sale was changed to $70 from $75. Supposed to start tomorrow at 8AM PST.
Kindle Fire Refurbs for $75
It would be a very good choice to get a kindle fire. And if you wanted to go cheaper you could always buy a demo version on eBay for $50. Then root it and put stock ROM on it. That's what I did for my brother

Thanks. I didn't realize about the demo units. They seem to end at about $55 on ebay, and many don't come with chargers. With the sale now at $70, I think I'll take the 90 day warranty and the ability to take back to best buy.

You won't be able to download Kindle Edition apps on the playstore if you put 10.1 on there. Personally, I would jump on this tablet for 70, after putting 10.1 on there it runs pretty smooth, does all I want it to, all around good media device. Not even jealous of my friend's nexus 7 .
This deal is live now for anyone interested. You need to enter the promo code "cnetkindle" when checking out.
I bought a brand new one for $100 bucks about 2 weeks ago on ebay , I havent gone custom rom yet , I have rooted (fff & twrp) , still contemplating losing the amazon stuff , I dont really read much so losing it isnt a big thing , I really like the size , I also have an Acer a500 and that is 10 inch , but the Kindle is actually the "just right size" (after my Galaxy Note) !
$70 is a great price for one of these, even if local storage isn't great. Thanks for the tip on the sale!
Its a sturdy device that my 3 yr old son loves. But we don't travel with it so we don't need local storage. Streaming via Netflix over WiFi is working fine for us.
I didn't care for the stock launcher or OS and so fixed that. But maybe you could just install a different launcher after getting the play store installed. Then you wouldn't lose your amazon perks.
Sold out.....
That's just how good our 1st gen KFs are!!!!

Hi all.
So, me & my fiancee both still have a 7" HDX, 32GB, LTE version. Is there any benefit to "upgrading" to the new Amazon Kindle HD8?
I know that those don't have an LTE option, but they do support MicroSD, which is nice. I could live without LTE, and tether to my phone.
But - app wise, compatibility with other devices, performance - are they any better than my 4 year old HDX? They ARE cheap, and that's pleasant, but I can't decide whether they are any good.
I wish Amazon had stuck to the high end devices, like the HDX, but I still struggle to find any other tablets that work as well as the Kindle devices. I personally really like Amazon's UI, I prefer it to stock Android.
Thanks for any advice/opinions!
