I am trying to figure out how to encrypt the external SD card on my GS4 GPE running 4.3. On other phones there seems to be a specific option to encrypt the external SD card, but this phone doesn't seem to have it.
Am I missing something?
I initially thought that maybe the encrypt phone command would also encrypt the external card but it does not.
If the answer to this is no, is there another alternative, like an app that would do the job?
Thanks in advance.

Im having trouble running some Apps that require and External SD card for storage. Ive searched and found threads about Hard Modding SD cards into the Nexus 7. None seem too successful as they have issues with charging.
I was wondering if there is a Kernel, Rom or app that would repartition the storage and make the nexus 7 see some of it as an External SD card? ie. Trick the software into seeing a partition as external SD.
Im not looking for Extra storage just a way to run Apps that require External storage to run.
Im in no way an Android Expert or a programmer. I have though managed to unlock and root the device using Tutorials here (Thanks).
Hello, I'm new to the Note 4 and new to a phone with an SD card slot in general. I've found that I'm unable to move files from internal storage to the SD card. Is there a way to do this without rooting? I'm on a Verizon model on lollipop. If there is no way to do this without rooting, what is the advantage to having an SD card slot if the only thing I can put on it is pictures?
It should be fixed in Lollipop. It works for me.
Look for "com.speedsoftware.explorer" in Play Store and try again, but the default file manager should do just fine.
I can't find an option to encrypt the SD card. Under Settings->Security->Encryption there is "encrypt phone", but it doesn't seem to affect the SD card. Anyone know how to encrypt the sd card on this device?
Bump
I think that you have to format it as internal storage instead of a external SD.
When formatted as Internal it's encrypted.
BUT SDcard cannot be used in other devices then!
Thanks for the reply coolhead.
That's kind of disappointing. Am i correct that on some devices you can encrypt the SD card while its still external storage? I am almost 100% sure that my HTC M9 would do that.
I don't know it's been a long time for me to own an android device.
So this marshmallow is really new for me.
I just hate the idea that i cannot use the SDCard for apps if i use it as external.
Maybe someone else can answer your question about other devices able to do that.

I don't like not being able to use for apps when its on the external either. I checked on a friends S7, and found directions for doing it on the M9. So you can encrypt sdcard when used as external on other marshallow devices. Foiled by Lenovorola!!
I think encryption is not working in general and there is an issue about it: https://jira.lineageos.org/browse/BUGBASH-253
I am also quite sure that this bug was already in cyanogenmod and also reported there.
This refers to the encryption of the smartphone, not to the encryption of the microSD by adoptable storage.
adoptable storage with encryption working fine on LOS 14.1
Hello,
Just wondering if anybody has any knowledge on how to install a new SD card when you already have adoptable storage enabled. I'm assuming I could power down the phone and copy everything over, but my new SD card is 200gb vs 128gb installed. I'm worried the partition table wouldn't be set properly.
Any advice would be great!
Thanks,
Jaime
I haven't tried but perhaps unmounting the SD card would help?

The data stored on your card must be moved back to the internal storage in order to avoid breaking your apps. You can do that from the internal storage menu. If you can't fit everything, you'll have to delete things until you're under the limit. At that point, you can go back into the SD card storage menu and format it as "portable", meaning it will work in other devices. If there's any data still on it, you will lose it. Then put in the new card and set it up for "adoptable" as the previous card was.
I Finally got MXPE to accept sd card as portable will not format as internal. Will reverting back to lollypop fix this? Thanks

Fix what exactly? Lollipop doesn't support adopted storage, it is a new feature in Marshmallow...
Lollipop doesn't support adoptable storage (but does allow app2sd to some degree). If the phone will not allow your card to be formatted as internal storage, it is most likely a problem with the SD card. What type of SD card is it (brand, speed, etc.)? Where and when did you buy it?
