Is it possible to make GSM-unlocked SPH L720 work in GSM and CDMA networks at the same time i.e. receive calls? Now I can only switch networks with Tellinfo and when I choose one of them another is out of service.

no, as far as i know you can only use one frequiency at a time. but i dont really see why you would want to....reguardless of the network you are on you can make and receive calls from any network.....the only way this would make sense is if you had 2 different numbers for 2 different networks bothing comming into the same phone and whats the point in having the second network when there are services like google voice...set up a g voice account and just use that as your secondary number and only pay the bill for one carrier....

Yes, I live in Ukraine, I use two different numbers: our CDMA operator to talk with my family and for Internet; GSM for usual calls. It would be great to use both simultaneously. Google voice is also an option but I still need GSM number

Hi,
please allow me to ask this stupid question
according to the spec, it supports GSM network, does it mean I can insert my normal phone SIM card to it and make phone call?
I don't really want to have a data plan and simply just use my normal SIM card (if it's possible), and then use WIFI when access is possible (at home or in the office).
I am very curious if I can make phone call with it, so I don't have to use my current phone anymore
thanks
It would help if you did a bit of research into the product you intend on purchasing, as any review will tell you, the galaxy tab IS a phone.
If you have an EU model, it will support and allow phone calls.
CANADA ones I think you can make calls, but not out of the box.
US models do NOT support phone calls (Skype may work?)
ASIA Models seem to come without marketplace.
risp is partially right in regards to the USA models (T-mobile / AT&T) out of the box these 2 tabs are not able to make phone calls just use 3G, but if you flash a Euro Rom it will allow you to make phone calls, and you can get Edge (only using an AT&T or Simple Mobile Sim) on both AT&T and T-mobile tabs. Since you stated that you will use wifi either at home or office then you can choose either one of the two and just flash the Euro Rom and you will be set to make phone calls.

OK, I just called Rogers (a Canada carrier), it surprises me that the staff told me it cannot make phone calls. The GSM network only supports the data.
when you said flashing a different Rom can make phone calls, does it mean, the Canada or US model doesn't come with that software to make phone calls?
I haven't seen the device myself yet, is there a place I can insert a SIM card to it, and the device and recognize it? If yes, I am sure there is a way to use it.
It IS an do-it-all marvel
It is a one-unit that does-it-all (including voice calls) if you are anywhere but North America.
Here, the service providers are only offering units with the voice call capability locked out. Apparently want us to carry around two units, a tab and a phone like in the iWorld. Hum. Why? Could it be they want to get deeper in our pockets?
I have a regional service provider that that doesn't sell the Tab. But they promised me if I bought one from the UK (Clove Technology) and put their sim card from my old phone in it, they would give me both voice and data service. Very reasonable.
They don't "support" it but the local staff was so excited to get their hands on it and and play that they had me up and functioning in seconds.
I'm very pleased with it and don't see any reason why any provider that offers voice and data service on your current phone wouldn't be willing to let you pay them for the same service on an unlocked, fully functional Tab that you got from wherever.

T-Mobile is filtering voice because they don't want it to be looked at as a big smart phone. They want it to be a real iPad competitor so they are doing everything they can to make people believe it isn't just a big smart phone but rather something new. Of course we know it is just a big smart phone and naturally we want to makes calls on it but T-Mobile isn't having any of that.
Same with the other carriers in the US.

I was hoping I could get the galaxy tab to run 3g and also provide voice on ATT. It sounds like either you can get 3g data only, or edge data and voice if you are using an euro rom. Is it possible to get 3g and voice on Att by using a euro rom and jumping through some hoops?
Hoping I can just retire the iphone and switch over to the galaxy tab.
Thanks,
John

The AT&T TAB can do 3G and voice at the same time with the EURO firmware.

I found that thread by searching for the words AT&T and TAB. Stay away from the T-Mobile TAB if your service is through AT&T.
I have a question about how GSM and CDMA radios work. I have an HTC Merge from USCC (I live in Vermont, USA). They use CDMA and leave the SIM unlocked for prepaid SIM cards. I travel to Alberta, Canada on a regular basis and have access to a post-paid account on Bell Mobility (GSM). I would like to figure out if it is possible to set up my phone to work on both lines at the same time, without having to switch back and forth to check for incoming calls and texts.
Is such a setup possible?
If it is, does anyone know how I would go about getting it set up (perhaps a different thread for the answer to this part)?
On a CDMA phone, where is the carrier information stored (phone number, PRL, etc.)?
The phone is currently rooted, S-OFF, SuperCID, SIM Unlocked, running 2fastrom's USCC Gingerbread ROM.
Radio version is 1.08.00.0804
I am posting this here because I consider it to be first of all a question of whether it is possible to use both systems at the same time, regardless of the phone itself. I have added the phone info in case those who may know the answer need it. If it needs to be moved, I have no problem with that.
Thanks for your time and consideration.
All the best,
Reuben

I know the iPhone 4s can use both but it has two separate antennas to accomplish this. I think it comes down to hardware.
Isn't Verizon coming up with some type of solution with VMWare for this? Where you could have two numbers active at the same time, one of them being a business number that was running in VMWare?
Yes, it is partly a matter of hardware - the Merge is set up for both systems. Still not sure if it can "listen" for two different numbers at once. Also curious about whether the phone needs to be listening to both bands at the same time if one number is CDMA based and the other is SIM/GSM based.
Verizon's solution sounds interesting - not sure it is enough to make me switch, particularly if both numbers have to be on their network.
Yes but only if you are not Verizon.
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/247646/lg_verizon_and_vmware_demo_virtual_work_phone.html
Currently Telefonica will support 2 simultaneous numbers due to a dual-sim. I really can't wait until entire networks start switching to an all IP based system. This would allow a much more flexible system then the NAM currently used.

It will eventually coming , we may see this type of services in near future once iphone will start shipping with GSM and CDMA unlocked version.
No its not doable at the same time
Hi All,
I want to use my GSM phone on CDMA network.
I know that if my phone does not have a CDMA receiver I cannot use the device itself on the network,
but is there a case (like Apple Peel $70-100) or a companion device (like gmate $65).
So basically, I am looking for CDMA modem that could transfer calls, data, and sms to my GSM phone (Xperia Arc S) or wifi device (Galaxy Player).
Any ideas?
Absolutely not. CDMA networks are highly restricted, and only allow phones in their IMEI database to access the network.
hi!
Hmm...
Well the reverse is possible so long as you have a CDMA phone with global roaming capabilities, but gsm to CDMA is limited by the IMEI, as the person above noted. Rather than asking if you cn get a device to transfer calls (because you could always get a throw away phone and forward calls to your gsm number, though I know or assume that's not what you want), find out wether there is a way to emulate an IMEI for non-CDMA devices.

Then there is another option that I wanted to check - using basic CDMA phone (I have samsung M910) with Android 2.2
and transfer calls over wifi or bluetooth to Xperia Arc S ( Android 4.0 and can be WiFi hotspot).
I found an app called "Phone Link by Funky Android Ltd", but didn't have time to check it yet; it is also in early alpha stage.
I'm wondering if there are more advanced apps to do the same if Phone Link happens to be too buggy?
Thread Closed.
I would like to hear your advice about testing multiple carriers on my nexus phone. Currently i'm on T-mobile prepaid, but i would like to begin testing other carriers to see which one does better in my area.
Just a few questions i have:
- Do you keep your same telephone number though all the carriers (is this even possible) or do you have different numbers for each carrier you are testing?
- Is this as simple as swapping between sims?
- Do i need to reset my APN everytime i swap between sims?

I am planning to test multiple carriers as well. For the phone # I recommend you get Google Voice. With Voice you can use any # and have the calls/texts forward to G Voice. The only issue is MMS which do not work. I have 3 phones at present and they all ring when a call comes in using Google Voice. This is far simpler than trying to port a single phone # through multiple carriers.
I am presently testing the AT&T version of StraightTalk. Will get a T-Mo ST Sim next month and try it out. Then will try a regular TMo plan. The process is the same as the original set-up. Add the Sim, start the service and change the APN (have to change each time as this is how the data gets routed).

Ah very nice informative post thank you...!
2 questions for ya..
- Is there a difference between T-Mo prepaid service vs their regular plan as far as coverage/performance..?
- How would one know what information to change too in the APN. Is it pre-programmed on the SIM card and just load default settings on the phone?
You're choices are basically Tmo or ATT, yeah some of the MVNOs have lesser coverage but there isn't much "testing" to do IMO.
- As for phone number, port to google voice and you never have to worry about your number again.
- All you have to do is swap sims.
- You don't have to reset APNs but you will have to either switch APNs or add a new APN, the data is a google search away.
- There is "supposedly" a small difference between tmo pre and post paid, I find it hard to believe but the only way to test (going out all over the country to map out coverage) I'm certainly not willing to do and I wouldn't trust the maps to be accurate.
- Do a search the info is available.
hello this is my first post
i unlock the moto e4 verizon with unlock code and it was unlocked but the phone cant make calls anyone else have this problem with the moto e4 verizon
What network u trying to use ? GSM services will only work for data and text .calls just end
Why don't you flash the stock images from the unlocked variant?
Be default, Verizon lock prepay phones from making call.
Although that's interesting because call works for me using Mint Sim. Try factory resetting as well.
Had the same problem, and then noticed that there was no APN listed. After manually entering the APN info from my other T-Mobile phone, I was able to make and receive calls without any trouble. Only thing was that the network drops to 3G during the call--not sure what to do about that.
maybe worth a shot
change preferred network from 4g to 3g, make a call, and change preferred network back to 4g. It's been working for me in cricket that way. same thing in post #8 of this thread

got the code from ebay
The Verizon E4 Plus works fine for me after unlocked. Tested with both AT&T and Tmobile with no issues. I purchased yesterday at Target for $99 and requested $2 unlock code yesterday. Got code this morning and it works great.
For some reason the device automatically drops to 3G when making or receiving calls. However voice quality is good if not HD.
Overall this is a pretty strong device for under $100...shame is you cant unlock bootloader.
Here's a video showing receiving call and dropping to 3G.
After putting my Cricket sim card in, entering unlock code, and setting up the phone, I followed the "trick" so phone calls would stop dropping to 3G and stay on 4G LTE but it would not work. I tried the following:
1. Change to 3G, made a call, change to LTE, made a call and it still dropped/showed 3G
2. Change to 3G, made a call, and restarted phone. Change to LTE, made a call and it showed 3G still
3. Change to 3G, made a call, and restarted phone. Change to LTE, restarted phone, made a call and it showed 3G still.
The Cricket APN is set correctly as I see 4G LTE when not in a phone call. I am able to make/receive calls, sms, mms (for mms had to use Textra over the default Message+ app).
Any other ideas I can try to get phone calls to be on LTE?

Hmm...someone on Slickdeals replied to me saying for Cricket, to get "HD-Voice", you need compatible Cricket phones, which the Moto E4 Plus clearly isn't --> https://www.cricketwireless.com/support/apps-and-services/hd-voice/customer/compatible-phones.html
Not a big deal about having phone calls drop to 3G. I was just curious because people and the wiki mention to do that "phone 3G/LTE" workaround.
I can't add any APN. On the Settings, I get a message "Access Point Name settings are not available for this user". There is no way for me to add any APN. Mobile Data works on my T-Mobile SIM.
Edit: Never mind. My bad. I was juggling two of these phones and only one of them had a SIM card. The one with the SIM card allowed me to add an APN.
But I wonder now how this is going to work when I travel abroad and have to use a SIM that would roam across multiple networks. I'd have to add each one manually? Without knowing which networks are available?
Phone(verizon e4plus ) took an ota while on att sim (was sleeping didn't notice til now ) now I only get busy signal tone when I call out I still have not and text messages just can't call out again without that dial tone happening
