Setting Voice priority over Data

So I am using my N1 on att so therefor it only works on EDGE. The problem is that whenever I have an active data session open, my phone does not ring and calls just go to vmail. Is there any way to set the phone to take the call and suspend the data connection?

No one has an answer? Not even through rooting the phone can I get it to accept calls over data...

i haven't used my N1 on the ATT network, but i've never head of data overriding voice. on any network. Voice should kick your data connection. I wonder if you have an issue with an APN setting.

IM in the Netherlands on vodafone. 3g works fine, but can't call and use internet on the same time.

Dont you need to be on at least 3g to have voice and data at the same time?
this has always been my experience on quite a few phones I have had when in an EDGE only area and tethering on O2 in the UK, phone does not ring.
On 3G it does, in fact last night while on a conference call on speakerphone I decided to run the speed test app to see how much a voice connection impacted data and I got 300-400kbps and I normally get 1-2Mbps, only ran it once and forgot to run it again after the call has ended, so it could just be local conditions....

You are correct that you cannot have voice and data working at the same time unless you have 3g (HSDPA). If you only have and EDGE connection, you can use data or voice, not at the same time though.

So I called HTC directly and asked what the heck was going on and if there is a way to change this and they told me there was NOT. The device is set up to accept data over voice. So basically the sell it as an "unlocked" device but the functionality is is majorly flawed if it cant run on 3g. I am a little angry at this point, yes I should have researched a little more, but who the hell sells a cell PHONE where data overides voice

Apparently HTC does, probably based on usage stats. I use several gigabytes of data and 1500 text msgs per month on my plan b/w myself and my wife and we only use 200 - 400 minutes. I am pretty sure that we are not the exception either...

I understand what you are saying and I am the same way. But being such a heavy user I do often get calls when I am on the web. So it is crap that this device is really not a fully functioning phone on EDGE.

Asking your phone to put voice over data as priority on edge is like asking your phone company to put your mom's phone number over others and having her call kick someone else's call off while you are talking.

This is not an issue with the Nexus One, all phones, when on EDGE, behave this way. This is just the way EDGE works, this is why they push 3G devices and network services and not EDGE. It's old and not as functional.
If you are not happy with the Nexus One because of this, I would suggest selling it and waiting for AT&T to get their device that will compete with this.

That is not true. Blackberry curve for instance runs on edge, if a call comes it it will interupt the data connect to take the call. You cant do voice and data at the same time, i agree with that. I have had other devices like the G1 when it first came out and when it ran on edge and I was getting a call while on the internet it would suspend my data and take the call...
And I like the N1 that is why I still have it. It just sucks that on a PHONE, data is prioritized over voice. I was looking for a solution for this situation by either rooting or figuring something out within the phone, but I guess there is not a way to fix this.

You are mistaken. I've had at least 10 phones that ran edge for data and none of them could interrupt data for voice. You are probably using more data intensive Apps or webpages compared to the blackberry, so its more likely you are missing calls.
Go use the blackberry to download a 7 MB file and see if you can call it.

where i live i'm just outside the 3G areas
my past phones have been HTC and i just end up with a voicemail notification when someone calls and my phones were ALWAYS on data, people used to get pissed thinking i was avoiding them.
google voice fixes this, i can just switch to my notification, listen to voicemail or if i'm lucky read the transcription (usually doesnt match though ) without having to effect what i was doing.
On my winmo phones, if i tried to do this, i would sometimes go back to my browser to find it decided to close while i was on the call to listen to my voicemail and then i would lose what i was doing and have to start all over anyways. so this is just another reason i love the nexus one and google voice, you say useless data>voice, i say a fix to my problem. i love you n1! lol

I can not speak to blackberry phones but this behavior has been the norm for all of my smartphones, to include the G1. If I make heavy use of Edge in a non 3g area then phone calls would not get through. It is annoying but not a problem specific to the N1.

Free microcell for me

Well today I finally had enough of my crappy lack of coverage with att, and called their cancelations line.
Once on the line I asked how much it would cost me to cut ties with them. The csr on the phone gave me the info and then asked why I wanted to leave them. I was honest and told them I didn't want to leave but as it stands, I have virtually no coverage where I live and can not make phone calls. I also explained that it had been that way for years and I was tired of having no service and having to call and register complaints daily.
Well after I finished he told me I could have a microcell for free. He notated my account and then told me to just stop by the local store and they would give it to me.
I now have a nice little microcell in the house.
Figured I would share with all those who Need one and can't get it.

If you had read my other post on this subject a month ago, you would know my thoughts on microcells and AT&Ts scam. Trust me, I ranted and raved enough on it.
The device itself is a good idea as a great deal of my calls are VOIP calls anyways. If I am going to use my network to make phone calls, I might as well use the Micro Cell I got for free to make certain my business clients can call me when I am at home.
As for the plan they offer, I did not need to sign up for the $20 a month plan for unlimited calling because with A List, Mobile to Mobile, Night and weekends, and 1400 minutes with rollover, I never need extra minutes. I think I used 800 minutes last month on the minutes portion and probably 3000 plus on the other portions.
Remember, the microcell only works with my devices or ones I list (up to 10) so everyone else in my neighborhood can either kiss off or go get their own.

Because he is using his electricity and bandwidth because AT&T's inadequate network. I think the microcell is a crock too. Whats a even bigger crock is people tht have to pay for it. Not only they pay for the device, an extra fee in addition to the above.
I would rather see them adopt Tmobile's Wifi calling.. Free, no extra devices to plug in, and it's use is purely up to the user.
I have spotty coverage at home and work. Should I have to buy two microcells or use use the existing Wifi at both locations?

Unless AT&T is reimbursing him for the data, he's paying for it. Doesn't matter if he would have already had internet service or not. With microcells the carrier doesn't have to fix their network, they just have to sell people these little boxes and still charge too much for their service.

Cool, they changed the software then. Before it was those 10 get preference, but there was no way to exempt other phones from using it.

Since this is about an ANDROID phone...You can do the same thing, unlimited WiFi VOIP calling with your Atrix and any WiFi connection.
The poorly documented solution is to get a GoogleVoice number, and enable GVoice on your cell phone. Once you enable it, it will always pop up before a call is placed, asking you if you want to place it with GVoice (over WiFi) or not. If you select GVoice it uses your GVoice number and the free wifi. If you say not, it uses the cellular.
And if you just give people your GVoice number, you get their calls no matter where you are or what phone is ringing, they all work together. You just don't need to give out your cell phone number, you just say "this (gvoice) number rings all my phones."
There's a lot more it can do.

I finally got that working with PBXes and Sipdroid but it wasn't nearly user friendly as T-Mo's official offering. My biggest qualm was having my google password stored insecurely on PBXes servers.

Google Voice uses data to tell Google that you are dialing through the google voice number. It has never been wifi calling and it probably never will be. I don't know where you got that idea, I've been using google voice since day one. The only 'wifi' part is if you call from google talk or gmail. (Why can't you call on the Google Voice page???)

I've had the microcell from the day it launched. I always had to authorize a number before it could connect to the microcell.

Guys, I posted this as a help post for those that need it, not to start an argument over our crappy carriers towers.
Yes I am using my bandwidth and electricity, but i am willing to sacrifice a. Dollar or two a. Month for better service and considering I have a 60 meg down and 6 meg up circuit, I think I can spare the bandwidth.
For those who don't know, you don't have to have the unlimited $20 a month microcell calling feature if you don't want it.
Now let's just. Let those who need the information and device know how to get. If. Free.

Today for the first time I had to unplug the microcell and use Atts service at the house.. I was uploading (a lot of) music to the cloud and on Charter I only get 2up. I could hear everybody just fine (download), but I was told my words (upload) were cutting in and out. Only one bar here w Att but it was better than with the Mcell, or so I was told. First time thats happened in a year, but def not the first time Ive been uploading + talking.

I love people that hate on the micro cell. If you have bad service with Verizon, guess what your options are? Shove off, or go to RadioShack and buy a signal repeater, which the cheapest one is $250 and can only support one active connection at a time. You'll spend $350-$400 for on one that can support up to 4 connections. Oh, and if it can't grab signal, your sol. No, AT&T isn't going to spend $6m to put a tower in everyone's backyard. Almost everyone who is in a bad coverage area has a free MicroCell offer on their account. Go to your local store, and ask them to check your PCA, they will probably have you listed for a free one, then your on your way. If a microcell uses $0.10 in electricity per month, I'd be surprised.
The micro cell has always forced you to provision 10 numbers, and all others can not access your data. Don't make stuff up just to make someone look bad please.

Are you a google music beta user? If so the app by dsfualt uses the maximum bandwidth possible for uploads. Try dropping the upload to a max of 512kps or switch you router to use qos for the device.
Just a thought.
For all you fks arvueing about the google voice calling, i assure you, google voice is not a voip client by default. It does nit give you wifi calling. It only connects to data the first few seconds in order to make the call and then you use you regular cell minutes.

Thanks for the gMusic tip, I have that account but Im using mostly Amazon.
I had thought about the setting the QoS, i may search for the ports later today.
GrooveIP will let you make calls with your GV# over internet, no service, no sim required.

Let me repeat this in small clear words: YOU CAN PLACE GVOICE CALLS, USING YOUR WIFI CONNECTION AND ZERO CELLULAR DATA OR VOICE TIME, FROM ANY ANDROID PHONE.
The Google Voice software that ships for every Android phone, has a POORLY DOCUMENTED OPTION that allows for a pop-up box on the cell phone every time you place an outgoing call. Assuming thta your cell phone HAS A WIFI RADIO and HAS AN ACTIVE WIFI CONNECTION, to your own router, or Starbuck's, or whoever?
That pop-up tells GVoice to either:
a) place the call use GVoice over Wifi instead of using the cellular system, having GVoice connect to both parties the same way it would if you placed the call from your computer, or
b) step aside and let the cell phone place a celluar call over the cell system as it normally would.
If you have an Android phone, and you have Google Voice installed on it, look at the options to "Use Google Voice". It isn't obvious, but it is there, and I use it every day without using any cellular minutes. My counter widgets confirm this. So does my bill.
OH DUH! The geeks at Google are just real real poor at documentation. With all their products, not just this one.

Wow at the lies.
Take your sim card out, you wont be able to make calls. Same if you dont have cell coverage, you WONT be able to make calls. Unless you are using GrooveIP, this app will allow voip calling w/o coverage.
Google voice alone will not provide a true VOIP calling experience, you must also have cell coverage. The end.

Wow you sir are an idiot. That function is to send out the calls via you gv number or your cell number, not route all calls through a magical nonexistent voip service that google offers.
Wiredpirate is correct that the only way to do it is through a voice service that he mentioned or through another sip gateway

[Q] Help with tab making and recieving calls

Hi everyone, last week i bought a galaxy tab 7.7 lte after reading it could make calls but didnt realise the stripped out tbiz feature in us models till i got home. I searched the net hoping to find a hack of somekind to re enable this feature to no avail. I have the graNdfathered unlimited plan and wanted to use my own verizon number to make and recieve calls, i guess the next best thing is to use google voice and groove ip? I have no idea how to set it up as my only number i have read about it but it just confuses me so came on here boping to. Get some help. If i put my sim in the tab can i just forward my verizon calls to my google voice? Does the tab support sms with my verizon number? If i port my number to google voice im guessing it terminates my contract? How do i setup. Google voice the guide i read said something about having another number to fowar to but idont have one i want to use my tab as all in one device with sim in it. Thanks in advance any help is appreciated.

Here's the problem: US carriers are very greedy. As such, a single device that "does it all" is bad for business. Think about it. If you got a tablet that also doubled as your phone, then that's a tethering fee they can't get you on if you had a wifi-only tablet paired up to your smartphone. OR that's a whole other data subscription, just for your tablet, that they aren't getting your money for either.
US carriers don't like all-in-one devices... That's why you'll never see a US device with all the features of the international version of the same device.
Here's my advice for you: Give Verizon a big fat middle finger by returning the VZW version of the 7.7, buying the international 3G version (P6800) instead, port your existing number over to StraightTalk for $45 a month, unlimited everything, pay as you go, and cancel your VZW contract.
People in the US need to get out of this 2-year agreement dependency BS... That's how carriers are able to gouge us for 3 and 4 times as much as everyone else around the world who are mostly pay-as-you-go. PAYG is much more competitive, and the consumer benefits from it.

As everyone mentioned, your vzw sim is for data only, but for gvoice calls (& voip internet calling) you only need data to work in order to make calls. If you intend to keep your vzw tab, you can try this:
Go to google.com/voice & setup a google voice account & choose a gvoice phone #. You need to do this from a laptop or pc, won't work from tab or phone. You may be required to setup at least one phone for forwarding to complete setup, you can use your cell or home phone, you can always go back later & uncheck forwarding or delete that phone from your gvoice acct.
After setup, at top right of web page, look for pic of gear (settings/options), be sure to select/check off forward to your gmail address.
Be sure your vzw sim is activated & in your tablet.
On your tab go to google play/market & download gvoice app & follow the setup guide. You should be golden
I use a prepaid GoPhone sim in my gsm 7.7 tab for calls, text & 3G. If you have good att signal near you & can do without the remote control infrared on the vzw version & can still return your vzw tab, get a p6800. You will not be disappointed

I have the US Verizon version of the 7.7 and it has 4g. Will this setup work with it. I set it up as per your instructions and hope it works but a confirmation from you would be nice.

My company paid for the 7.7 as well as foots the bill for the monthly unlimited 4G data w/ Verizon (I just swap the SIM out between my MiFi and the 7.7 depending on which one i would bring with me). I actually prefer the awesome speed of LTE.
I have got GrooveIP working w/ my Gvoice account to make & receive VOIP calls. (Thanks 2 Asenduk who pointed out the setting that was making it not work on mine).
I just wish the bluetooth would work with the 7.7 as a phone and not just "media" as when I bought one of those bluetooth mini handsets it only lets you talk on it but does not let you answer or end the call from the handset (nor gives you caller id or ringing indicator at all).

If you already have it setup, why not just test it out ?
I can say that I just set this up on my sister's VZW 7.7 GTab & it works flawlessly using free version of GrooveIP Lite. She already had a gvoice # setup w/forwarding to her cell, I just added GVoice app to her tab & configured to her GVoice, and of course, installed GrooveIP Lite app & Bam !
You may need to enable (check box) to "send calls to GoogleChat" option in google voice for incoming, on some devices this was necessary for me
I'm off to pay for full version of GrooveIP, cuz they deserve it

The Note 10.1 as a phone... not quite

My Note 2 stopped working on Friday night and wouldn't turn on. A bit of searching on here and I appear to have got me Sudden Death Syndrome - I thought that was a thing of the past. So, it's going to the service centre later but this weekend I got the chance to try my 10.1 as my only mobile device.
This is something I had given thought to anyway and I thought it would be fine. This wasn't to be the case. I found that wondering around doing normal day-to-day activities was not conducive to having a tablet with me at all times. I don't always carry a bag so a pocketable device is still important.
I gave in and bought a "disposable" £30 phone on Sunday while passing CPW (a Samsung, coincidentally, as the equiv Nokia was £10 more).
It was an interesting way to find out two devices will be required

It makes me think that you have potential in running a social blogging network, and perhaps be the boss of a profitable blogging enterprise.
Perhaps you can float on an exchange one day and we can all invest in your company.

I'm using GV (which lets me have one outgoing number on all my Telephony-capable devices) and will sometimes just use the phone (usually in Speaker mode) when I need to make a quick call. Works fine. Get a BT headset and you could get away with not having a "real" phone for a while.

Hey guys. Im confused. I use gv number as my regular number. How would I use it on my 10.1? From my understanding of gv, it needs to be routed to another number or your gmail address (which I have obitalk for landline using this feature) Is there a way to use the gv app to specifically make calls via wifi on 10.1? Im using talkatone for that but its glitchy. Thanks.

I couldn't tell ya- I have an 8000, which has a GSM radio in it and can get/make phone calls (and texts), so when I make an outgoing GV call, it uses the phone built into the Note (and it shows up as my GV number vs. the random number the SIM I use in it has).
I have no idea how Internet calling is done via GV (but I know some people do it).

The simplest option is groove ip, the progran registers to your gv account. The developer bought a note and worked diligently to address a bug created in the JB update and the program works flawlessly now. THen have Grove IP tou use my google voice accounts phone number.. so my cell phone number is not given out but calls are routed thru that number .. Makes call quality better.. Considering getting rid of my home phone and using google voice via grove ip for home phone service..
Anyone know a Good Internet faxing app or site that keeps my stuff MY STUFF and does not spam the fax numbers you send too.. ??

Workaround for UK users

I have been using this on my Samsung Galaxy Camera to make calls and it works surprisingly well as long as you are in a WiFi hotspot somewhere. It's limited to outgoing calls only but it's a workaround if your mobile phone dies in some way.
You can use it on more than one device but you can only attach it to your one BT account. It's very easy to setup.

Assuming OP has a N8000 it is a phone. And the dialer is a multiview app so you can use the phone feature while still doing other things on the Note like jotting down notes or referencing a document without toggling between apps. Obviously, due to the Note's size, you're not going to hold it up to your ear. You can use it as a speaker phone or with a BT headset including the HM5100 BT S Pen. Used that way it's as valid as any other device as a phone and S Voice over BT is incredibly helpful. I'll sometimes forward calls and MMS from my phone to my Note so I only have to carry one device. Unlike OP, I tend to take my Note pretty much everywhere and the Book Cover case adds very little size or weight and functions well as a stand or prop for using the on-screen keyboard. I probably could use the Note as dedicated phone but a phone is a phone and a tablet is a tablet and each have strengths and weaknesses.
As for VoIP calling, the Note's no different than any other Wi-Fi enabled mobile device and all can be used with a variety of apps for voice calls and MMS. The only difference, as noted above, the Note's form factor makes it less than ideal as a primary communication device.
One advantage of the Note either in 3G form or using VoIP is its battery life compared to a phone that typically has a battery 2/3 smaller. That and the two forward facing speakers make it a great speaker phone. So in the end it all comes down to people's view on carrying something as large as the Note around to use as a communication device. Functionally it’s as good as anything else out there.

This is so true.. use a bluetooth device and keep the tablet in my Purse.. is how i use my nexus 7 and could do the same with 10 in just pack a slightly bigger purse ..

That was sort of my point. When the N8000 is my tablet and my phone is in my pocket I don't notice. When I have to, effectively, carry the tablet everywhere not having a pocketable phone it imposes limitations on me that I wasn't aware of. Bluetooth range is well and good - I had my old Jawbone and the car handsfree kits too - but if you are just quickly popping out of the house or you want to just wander off with no baggage, literally, then the 10.1 is just too big.
90% of the time I have both devices within reach but it's that 10% that showed me that my lifestyle (for want of a better word) doesn't quite allow me to use only the 10.1 as my sole mobile device.
I am waiting for the HM-5100 to be an official UK device so the price drops and it will be cute, but my original plan to stop using the phone and use just the tablet got a very sudden reality check (for me - you are all different, of course).

Verizon wifi texting

Is there a way to wifi text from a rooted Verizon phone and keep your normal phone number?

there was another member asking this question in another thread that was long and i cant remember where it was located but the short answer is no. there are options like Google Voice and other messaging apps that will easily work with Wifi only reception but not the phone app. i know Tmob offers this function but Verizon does not yet.

Thats kind of what i thought. The reception on the note 3 is no where near as good as my droid razr. My business is in a fairly weak cell area and i normally can't get a text to send from my normal indoor spot with my note. People can be sitting right next me with their other brand phones and send and receive text any time they want.

i have had the complete line of DROID phones from Motorola since the first DROID for Verizon and stopping with the Ultra and agree they have and have always had the best radio's for reception but i have not found any issues with my N3 that didnt match my Moto phones.
I also find GV texting to be great and allows me to receive and respond from my phone, tablet, and laptop which leaves more options than phone reception.

I wish!!!!! I really wish! I had a problem with my Verizon account one time where I lost all 3G access - and it wasn't my phone's fault. But funny enough, I could receive SMS but I couldn't receive MMS - regardless of connection to WiFi or not. After a week of talking to Verizon tiered support, I finally got to the highest support (some guy in the USA) who I was able to talk to. MMS goes through 3g and there's no changing how that works no matter what you do. I had always thought MMS went through WiFi.
Anyway, turns out someone had accidentally turned off 3g access on my account (iPhone 4s at the time). Soon as this guy figured it out, he flipped a switch and I started getting 3g again, lol.
Either way, I'm a big fan of iMessage, WhatsApp (was a big fan), Hangouts, and Telegram means of communication. They're 5x faster, usually more reliable, and cost $0 to use - and yes, they work on WiFi. Hard to get everyone I know to use one means though... so I end up doing a fair bit of texting even today.

I think the Verizon messaging app actually works on Wifi. I can be in a dead zone and still receive sms and mms with wifi connected.

I use the GV Phone app when traveling outside of the US. You need a Google Voice number if you want to call real phones and not just app-to-app (like Groove IP or many other chat-based apps). Talkatone is another app which integrates with Google Voice, but I haven't had any luck with it.
Voice calling with GV Phone works pretty well if you keep one thing in mind...WiFi quality matters. Low WiFi signal or a congested network will increase latency and jitter to the point that calls will drop/fragment/stutter. Conversely, with a good quality WiFi signal you can talk for free from anywhere!

I use the Google voice app for texting and calls. I gave my Google voice number to everyone and as far as they know, it is my only number now.

I did this too, and still do for the most part --- just really sucks that I can't get MMS with Google Voice. If I could get MMS with Google Voice - I'd be giving this number out to everyone - including Family. But I'm seeing rumors of Google Voice saying something about finally offering MMS at the start of next year.

I'm curious to see if they ever fully integrate voice and hangouts. I wonder if the voice app will keep voicemail/phone calls and hangouts takes over SMS/mms or if they are going to cram it all into one app.
