I didnt do anything to it. Its all stock right out of the box which is why i think its so strange and odd. I just want to know what it is caused by.
used phone is what that is...I would take it back...period!
Customer before you rooted it, probably has a recovery on it too...what version is it MF3, it will not have a recovery.
good luck

How can i be sure of that? I checked and the IMEI had never hit the network or anything like that. Also i purchased it the day the 32GB came out it was the first one out of the store.

Hi guys,
I recently bought the nexus 4 (4.2.2 , Baseband : .48) but like some others i am having problems with phone calls. I can receive and make them but cannot hear anything when i do (a dial or voices). Skype,Viber etc works no problem so it is just GSM calls. My sim card works in other phones perfectly. Other peoples sim cards do not work in my phone, so it is not my sim or carrier and must be the phone.
So now i want to downgrade to 4.2.1 in the hope it will fix whatever the problem is. I was hoping someone could help me with the most basic straight forward solution. I have nothing on the phone as it is brand new, so backing up data doesn't matter. All i want to do is put 4.2.1 on it.
I have a mac.
Thanks in advance
Before downgrading go to settings > Apps > All > Phone > clear cache and clear data. See if that fixes it.

Nothing will help either change the phone or try other carriers.
I have been facing this problem and tried everything, sadly i am in india and bought the phone from US.
You can give a try to .33 radio and there is a fix in original android development forum by name Fix for no in call audio.
That didnt work for me, try if it works for you and also let me know as well.

Download the .48 baseband and flash it via recovery. Your in call audio should definitely return.

You already unlocked the boot loader and installed a recovery..so therefore your phone has already voided the warranty. lol.
You need the .48 baseband nevertheless. That baseband comes with the 4.2.2 update.

Warranty isn't voided. Does it say its voided when you unlock the bootloader? Yeah. but in reality, it really isn't.
If anything, you can always fastboot flash back to stock and relock the bootloader.
If you were on a HTC device and you unlocked your bootloader via HTCDev..... then yes your bootloader voided your warranty but since this is a Nexus device. There is no way for them to know that you did lock your bootloader.
I honestly think its a software problem and has nothing to do with the phone itself.

Just tried .54 . No good either. This is so frustrating. I've tried flashing the system and boot img now too I live in Ireland and bought the phone from America so returning isn't an option anymore either
EDIT ** Just done adb sideload and put 4.2.2 back on to my nexus in a hope that might fix it but it didnt.
I just picked up an s4 from att today. Ive been playing with it for about an hour and I definitely want to root the phone and remove all of the bloatware. Ive read online that there is no way to fully remove all traces of rooting this phone when needed for warranty reasons. Ive also read that att will still honor the warranty even if the phone is rooted. Does anyone have any info on this? Im experiencing a little lag here and there with the phone and am honestly not as jazzed about it as I thought I would be. If I root the phone will I still be able to switch for another phone if I choose to within 14 days and will att honor my warranty if I keep the phone and something goes wrong with it? Im in the US.
Well I had the s4 from release day,and have both root and a custom ROM.a couple weeks ago my WiFi decided it didn't wanna live no more so I flashed stock ROM through Odin and WiFi was still not working so I took my phone into the warranty center he flashed stock ROM again and it still didn't work so he just swapped it out for a new phone right there....
Long story short just unroot and flash stock ROM and you should be good to go

That can only be done if the phone hasn't been updated to mf3. There is no flashable firmware for that one.

Yes forgot to mention that .also for anybody with mf3 firmware try to get a warranty exchange if you don't mind getting back a refurbished device and there's a possibility you will get a non mf3 phone

I asked ATT customer service if rooting voided the warranty. I was told rooting does not void the warranty unless rooting caused the damage. The example the rep gave me was: If you root and phone overheats as a result of rooting, then they wouldn't cover that.

Thanks for all of the replies! They're very helpful. How can I tell if my s4 has the mf3 firmware and what exactly is the difference between mf3 and the other?
Just wanted to add that the last three digits for my baseband are mdl so im assuming I dont have the mf3 software as of yet. I have a software update available. Should I update or just root the phone as it is now?

If you want to be able to root AND flash ROMs, do not update to MF3. There is no method for loading a custom recovery for phones that have updated to MF3.
There is a thread in the General section about rooting an MF3 phone, but at this point you won't be able to flash a ROM.

1.flashing a pit file in odin
Not tried
1. BestBuy, gonna trip out there after my college classes.
2. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unbrick-Ser...t-/271267344770?ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123 would like to do this only as a last resort as i am broke right now.
I'm posting on XDA for some help/suggestions on what i should do. (please note I have no custom recovery)
Also I saw someone say they put their phone on T-Mobile and took a T-Mobile OTA to replace the MF3 and then bootloader unlocked the T-Mobile update.
Edit: I do have the SGH-1337 sim unlocked currently running on airvoice going to make the switch to T-Mobile sometime this week.
Don't mess with the pit file. Best case, it didn't do anything, worst case I'd it messes up your phone worse that it is. You never mentioned what state your phone is in. Did it boot? Boot into download or what.
I think your best bet is best buy. They seem to be able to flash the mf3 firmware. It's basically the same thing jtag would do and it's free.

Except kies doesn't have mf3...and more often than not makes the phone worse than before as it does a partial flash of (older) MDL until it gets stopped due to bootloader

You'd probably be better off going to a Best Buy that has a "Samsung Experience" booth. They can flash it back to stock MF3. The normal BB service counter will have no clue what your talking about.

Glad you got it back working. There's no way it'll ever be able to be downgraded.
So I have been restoring to stock every time I flash a new rom, even when updating, and for some reason, after going to stock with odin, my phone usually doesn't boot up, so I go to the samsung recovery and the little android guy is dead and the front door hatch thing is open with a red triangle and exclamation mark, I usually just wipe data from here and it boots, but I have always seen this and I am not sure why. Anyone know why?
Thanks
Joe
Edit* I might add that when I go to wipe, the guy stands up and it looks fine but then he goes back down.
Have you tried doing a factory reset directly after using ODIN?

That's normal, you almost always have to do a factory reset after Odin. Otherwise you'll get a boot loop.

If you don't know what that means than you sure as hell shouldn't be flashing Roms or anything like that because if you dont know the basics than you sure don't need to be stepping up on a course from the basics. Take your time to read before messing with your phone and end up with a $600 paperweight.

There are ODIN files available for both MDL and MF3 and with Safestrap, custom ROMS can be flashed to MF3. So it is a fair question considering the OP didn't specify. However, it appears that the OP has a Canadian variant (Canadian carrier) which means my advice about the factory reset still stands.

None of that matters. It doesn't matter what you knew about other phones, it matters what you know about THIS phone. Thinking previous knowledge of other phones is all you need will guarantee a brick with this one.

How about you read instead of someone holding your hand and telling you what it is. If you haven't heard of them than by all means I'm glad something weird happened to your stock recovery because it doesn't matter what other phones you flashed Roms on all that matters is THIS phone and if you don't know anything about this phone especially KNOX than I suggest you read.

It appears he's not asking about the meaning of, "what firmware are you on", but rather about the screwed up quote (post #6) herbzilla attempted asking, "This makes no sense to ask. He clearly states that he flashes custom ROMs and uses Odin to flash back to stock.".
Plus, he is on a Canadian carrier so "MDL" or "MF3" would mean nothing to him.
There is a lot of misunderstanding in this thread.
If I might add,he still needs to read all about his model phone .it gets tiring for some to see another thread about anything thats been covered already or is basic knowledge.

I completely agree. This hand-holding BS is getting old. People that don't read and at least try to learn should be banned for their own good. It is a development site after all. But unfortunately, that's not my decision.
Got no lights and it won't go into the recovery mode.
Plugging it in to my laptop gives me a usb_dload message. I've seen something similar with the SGIII but couldn't find any info on the S4.
Will Sprint help me out on this? Have I missed any information that has already been posted?
Any help at all is appreciated as this is almost brand new and this was through no fault of my own.
If it was no fault of your own, take it to Sprint, they will either replace it, fix it, or send it to Samsung.

It was rooted. I installed Titanium backup pro. And a partition manager to format my sd card.
It was working fine. The update came along and I clicked to update. After it searched of to reboot nothing happened and its been dead since that time.
Sprint want $80 to replace it as its not got insurance. But surely this isn't an insurance claim. Are they not accountable for the stuff they are sending over the air?
You were rooted, that was your first problem. OTAs work fine and they know sometimes it can cause problems but in this case you rooted which technically you broke the warranty so its your fault. And $80 isn't bad at all. With insurance its a $100 deductible.

The only way is if you are able to get into download mode. If you cannot the I don't know what you can do since you won't be able to access recovery or download mode. But if you can I would say to download the 4.3 tar and Odin it.
