Hey All Geeks
So, i decided that it's time to get a tablet, and finally found that Android 3.0 is the long-awaited, dream OS for me. But here is where the problem kicks in (Bad English?). Xoom and GTab2 (Easier name) are bothi running the almighty Honeycomb... so now i'm confused which one to get? i've been thinking for a week now, but my experience isn't as your (Geeker people and Devs ) experience and i thought i would ask you if you don't mind. So, far what i want is: Continuous Development ( because i'm NOT a Dev so i'm putting my faith in you guys and going with the tab you're choosing)
Extra's:
Pro's of Gtab2:
Design is Gorgeous...
Light weight...
Con's of Gtab2:
No SD Card
No MicroUSB
Pro's of Xoom:
MicroUSB
SD Card
Con's of Xoom:
Typical Design (not really bad but not innovative)
bad rear camera position
In short:
I DO want the GTab2 for the Design BUT will i regret getting that for the missing of Micro USB (which is my most concern) and SD Card (Which isn't REALLY bad but bad)
Q2: Which one will have MORE development (assumption)?
(for Xoom Forum): UNLOCKABLE Bootloader means ONLY for Devs? if so, as a normal human (xD JK JK) will i be able to do custom ROMs?
Help!
I absolutely love the backside of the new galaxy tab.... if they were out at the same time, I'd probably get that based on that fact alone.
The idea of working in a dash of ergonomic design into something that by its very nature will be in a hand/hands all the time seems like a natural and necessary step forward.
Honestly, if you don't mind the lack of ports and slots the Tab2 has, there will be 3 major deciding factors:
- The development community for each device (if that matters to you)
- If Samsung will be handling the updates for the Tab2 (may be a bad thing)
- If the Tab2 has an unlockable bootloader
Other than that, why not go for the Tab! It doesn't look bad at all~
The Galaxy Tab is out for me. I can't buy anything that doesn't have an sd slot unless it has 128gb onboard.

I was considering the galxay also, but i really wish it has the sd card and microusb slots. If it did, it would be perfect. Without a microusb slot, how will it connect to a computer, anybody know? It also doesnt have a US release date yet, only speculations. Not sure how much longer i can wait for a tablet.

EXACTLY what i'm thinking (except for US part as i don't live there)
Get the tab if design and look is more important to you cuz each person has a different perspective about their device. Get the xoom if you have seen what samsung did to their galaxy phones. Motorola isn't the fastest company about updates but better than most, except for htc.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Tab2) is nice, I don't mind with the plastic back (I own Nexus S which has similar built material).
My biggest let down with Tab2 are:
- No USB port
- Only 32 GB internal memory
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/13/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-official-tegra-2-honeycomb-dual-camer/
If there is no USB port, how do I connect this thing to my computer to sync files?
I can live without SD card slot, but I need 64 GB model.
Oh well ... Xoom is not that perfect either (Wonky buttons, dimmed screen?).
Probably Toshiba?

The Toshiba had all the right holes, but it looked like it was going to weigh in a bit more than everyone else and seemed noticeably thicker...
Theres an after school special baked in there somewhere, but the Toshiba just didnt do it for me.
Doesnt matter if you have the Money for any device!! Buy one, and trash the one you dont like!! or use the old one for guinea pig trials!!
I would just wait for an unannounced Android Tab with 3.0 coming out in 2 month. With all the Love everyone want. SDXC Slot and Awsome Camera front/rear and HDMI w/o need a Dock!! oh yea not to mention got Dual Core with 64GB. Thats all I can share for now, testing this guniea pig lab rat out. Sucks tho 7 inch screen.
But I love my Xoom for now and Current VZW Tab!!
Good luck OP!! and many who moans to get one too!!
Knowing Samsung's track record and with the posts already out the bootloader is extremely easy to unlock on the Xoom. Making ROMs that much easier. Also the Xoom is a Google experience device meaning if I understood everything correctly that Google has the drivers for the device in hand meaning updates are going to be much faster because Google themselves are developing on this platform and testing new builds of Honeycomb.
I'm just including some generation information on the Asus Transformer. If anything is missing just let me know and I'll add it.

Asus have said that 3G versions will be coming but not till at least a couple of months after the wifi version come out (in UK at least).
From comments from Asus staff they looked at the ipad sales figues and noticed that the 16Gb Wifi version sold far more than any of the other models and decided to initially concentrate on their equivalent (it's also why they have been surprised why so many people want the keyboard bundle as they were assuming that vast majority of people would want the cheapest tablet-only option).
Something I'm missing from every specs / review listing: what's the video resolution/quality for the rear camera?
Given the recent nVidia news, it may be good to post which Tegra 2 platform this is on..
I came here to check - I'm still not sure myself, but I'm hoping it's not Harmony!!

Hoping it won't be a huge amount more, if they were to integrate A 3G module into the keyboard as an upgrade for the wifi model

The platform is very possibly Whistler (the same as the Xoom) but I haven't seen any confirmation of that from a dev on here or asus/nvidia so I didn't list it.
The rear cam video is probably 720p (and I thought I read that somewhere but haven't seen it).
Why the need for 3 g model if you have a mobile just tether for 3 g over WiFi hot spot

@TheCougar
Just been pointed out to me that you have the wrong dimensions for the unit in your OP. It should be Dimensions: length = 271mm ... not 217mm. Also on measuring my own device it's actually 176mm wide, not 171mm as asus themselves claim. This is measuring the 16gb wifi model though so maybe other models will differ.

technolookers.com/2011/04/11/asus-eee-pad-transformer/ claims 1080p recording @ 30fps, which would give it the same camera as the EEE Pad Memo.
Anyone knows how the trackpad works on the tablet? Is it like a mouse? Also, what about a usb mouse?
Thanks for the updated information. I've fixed the official dimensions, added the link to the FCC page, and added the video recording specs. I'll add information on the dock once it has been released and some people have it in hand. I've also put down in the additional hardware info section that the platform is not Harmony.

That's awesome.
I do have a question.
Some sites are mentioning 1GB/512MB RAM on their spec sheets.
So only 512MB is available for apps, remaining 512MB is reserved or something?
KG
I'd like to see a list of the software already installed on the device, both Asus apps, but also Googles and other stuff ( I saw there was something called "preloaded software" further up, but it didn't like to a list of the software)
Before you guys go crazy, I have a a500 right now and LOVE it!
But I am looking at the new Asus Prime, at least its not apple! I am a speed freak and I have to have the fastest I can get.
I am looking at this tablet ONLY for the Tegra 3, but I NEED a usb slot. I use my usb everyday and I do not know what I would do with out it. I would not mind using a keyboard for extra battery and a usb, but what if I did not want to use it and Im not at home, I dont want to leave a $150 keyboard just laying around.
Does anyone know if the docks can be reversed so the keys touch the back of the tablet when closed?(transformer or prime)
or do you think I should wait for the A510,700? A 1920x1200 screen would be amazing, and worth the wait.
There is no sure date when it will come out and when they do I have a really bad feeling there is going to be no usb. People want thin, that is the major complaints of this tablet, its actually too thin for me lol, but the usb slot forces it to the size it is now. So I dont know if should buy this now and have usb with the dock.
I know there are people who have both tablets and it would help with any suggestions.
Based on what I have seen with the transformer, I would say you probably cannot reverse it so the keys are on the outside. I haven't physically held one of those before so I cannot say 100% though.
If Acer decides to ditch the full sized USB in their Tegra3 tablets (which they better not) then you could also look at the Lenovo thinkpad tablets. They currently have a full size USB and I would be VERY surprised if their next gen android tabs didn't have it. Lenovo builds "enterprise" class products and a USB is quite important in an enterprise setting.

I have seen some people that own it love it.They too will be rushing a ics tablet to market I'll guessing it will remain with all the ports. Toshiba is known for this.
I do like the lenova products as well. But this acer tablet is super ffast does what I need. Just wish browser was a bit more compatible with web content.such as pogo and so on.
I would say WAIT WAIT WAIT.And see what t3 will bring.
Good luck

Hello XDA!
I want to buy a tablet and I'm a little undecided
Have to choose between Galaxy Tab2 7.0 and Nexus 7.
I choose Nexus 7 because it has a good processor, better screen (this will test soon) and will last a few years .. no lag quad core Tegra 3!
For me, a tablet is for:
games
watching movies
and sometimes a device that can read a book (and some browsing on the Internet)
Am I able to buy a USB OTG, now I wi-fi and surprise surprise .. can buy a 32 GB version!
Till now I have memory problems at all, and a USB OTG can do whatever I want! I could only make games and gaming tablet and stick to put some movies!
Samsung tab2 would buy it just because I heard it's good, I like the design, material .. but do not know the difference between the two screens (I did not see Nexus 7 in my city).
Have principal camera and you can increase the memory because is equipped with a slot for SD.
Until now, my financial possibilities and "little tool" (USB OTG) differences between the two would be:
Galaxy tab2 has the principal camera
And do not know what is quality material (which does not interest me so much) and has a better screen, I want to say this in terms of color (they are alive, even deleted?)
Thanks in advance, and excuse my English!
P.S. I want to know if there was an important aspect of the Nexus 7 for which I would want to take it! Mean if a tablet is bad or not so good compared to Galaxy tab2!
Thank you.
My Wife has the the Sam Gal Tab2 7.0 - nice BUT.......Asus have done a fantastic job with the Nexus 7. First thing is the screen - less resolution on the Tab2 - looks ok but the Nexus looks great - only down side is the Mem expansion- but really if you get a 16GB + OTG.
I have rooted both and they work well. I must say I am a geek (fussy) with these gadgets - and I love my Nexus 7 - sorry samsung.
Cheers

I read that 32GB N7 is going to be out soon so storage is not much of a problem now.

I really hope a shortcut is created for pen window without spent

Yes but Multi Window is no where near as functional as on last year's model! Bring in apps from the bottom of the screen on last year's device and scatter them all over the place and even pin one on top!
New and improved you only get 2 apps and no pinning!

1 - yeah musb is far better than that damn 30 pin connector
2 - sound is diminished a good bit by the side firing speakers. placing a piece of paper at each side of the tablet boosts it a good bit. i'm sure they did it to make the bezel thinner.
3 - a mini-apps bar at the bottom would be a lot better than having to use the pen every time you want one up.
4- not an issue for me
5 - i'd love root asap. i don't care if i trip the knox.
a few apps should still support floating windows. the built in video player does.

1- yeah why would they put usb 3 on the new phone but not on the new tablet. They should have put a full size usb 3.0 connection with separate break away charging port.
2- I agree that eliminating front fire speakers is a let down but the size reduction is a plus.
With the addition of Knox to the new devices you would think that Samsung would have found a way to include backup software. I believe that a good native backup app would eliminate the need for many people to root as backup capabilities are a necessity to the 10 million plus people that have downloaded Titanium backups.
The other stuff is not that much of a big deal to me.

you can plug a usb 2.0 micro cable into a usb 3.0 micro port. it'll charge at the same rate but data throughput will be cut to 2.0 speeds.
but i do kinda wish they'd offer a separate option fastcharging ac adapter like they have for the windows tablets.
I missed there is no FFC... That seems nuts, IMO. I thought the lack of a dedicated HDMI out was the big one but trumped by no FFC.
Charging the highest price for non Apple products and not have a FFC seems dope silly. "Same" then as the Nook HD+ that costs 70% less. Sure the Sammy is a lot faster for some 3D games, but the HD+ rocks for 95% of games tested, all emulators, video and comics/reading.
Not having the camera in an odd way nulls the device down to the HD+, since HD+ already has a sweet display.
Looks like I am back to considering the 701 over the Sammy, but the Tegra 4 in the 701 has it's own apparent issues with sleep, heat and throttle problems. Shield and new Toshiba tablets all have the problems.

If FFC is front facing camera, then you really missed it. This tablet has smart watch and few other motion things based on front camera.
I can see it
USB 3.0 I can see, in today's world speed is a must.
I would add some sort of display output like micro HDMI
Epic fail on my part then. Thought I read in this thread it did not. Weird, but also good. Rather fail and it has one

Somehow the front facing speaker comment got truncated and I took for camera. In this case, I would rather look stupid and be wrong. Still seems priced too high and better suited for 32gb/64gb models range rather than 16gb/32gb.
Then again, my 32gb S4 cost $650, so there you go!
