I was actually wondering... If I'm network locked and I flashed a new stock ROM, would it remove the network lock? I don't think it will, but just want to confirm and to know the rationale behind all of it. I was thinking of rooting my S4 to get it to downgrade and have the network lock removed, but don't know about all these things. A lot of threads mention rooting for custom firmwares but not rooting in order to remove network lock afterwards.

Flashing any rom will not remove the network lock... but it can brick ur phone if u flashed a rom that is not intended for ur phone, if u want to get it unlocked ur best option for that is call ur current carrier to get the unlock code, it could cost u for the code but thats about the only way besides rooting and trying to unlock it that way after root.

I've unlocked my phone using an unlock code with one of those websites. It's a success. No problems. The problems I encountered recently had to do with the defective battery that came with my S4. What I'm curious to know now is if I can flash a ROM from my country where I got my phone... Just to make it like an unbranded phone. This is because when I boot up my phone, I see my carrier's logo and one of the wallpapers they replaced with their carrier logo as well. It's pretty annoying... So I wonder if I can flash a non-carrier unbranded ROM from my country to my phone. And do ai need to root to do so?

My S4 is locked to 3 UK.
I would like to flash UK unbranded firmware.
Can I just flash the UK unbranded firmware without unlocking the phone first or must I unlock it first?
I intend to continue using the phone with 3UK. I don't want to brick the phone.
I just want to get rid of as much unwanted junk apps on the phone as I can. I have no intention (currently) of using the phone with any other network.

You can flash any firmware for your variant, and it will still locked to your service provider
sent from my Galaxy
And it will not brick the phone?
I was told on another forum that it could not be flashed to any other firmware except 3 uk because it is sim locked.
I just want to be sure before I flash it.

I just picked up an s4 from att today. Ive been playing with it for about an hour and I definitely want to root the phone and remove all of the bloatware. Ive read online that there is no way to fully remove all traces of rooting this phone when needed for warranty reasons. Ive also read that att will still honor the warranty even if the phone is rooted. Does anyone have any info on this? Im experiencing a little lag here and there with the phone and am honestly not as jazzed about it as I thought I would be. If I root the phone will I still be able to switch for another phone if I choose to within 14 days and will att honor my warranty if I keep the phone and something goes wrong with it? Im in the US.
Well I had the s4 from release day,and have both root and a custom ROM.a couple weeks ago my WiFi decided it didn't wanna live no more so I flashed stock ROM through Odin and WiFi was still not working so I took my phone into the warranty center he flashed stock ROM again and it still didn't work so he just swapped it out for a new phone right there....
Long story short just unroot and flash stock ROM and you should be good to go

That can only be done if the phone hasn't been updated to mf3. There is no flashable firmware for that one.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
Yes forgot to mention that .also for anybody with mf3 firmware try to get a warranty exchange if you don't mind getting back a refurbished device and there's a possibility you will get a non mf3 phone

I asked ATT customer service if rooting voided the warranty. I was told rooting does not void the warranty unless rooting caused the damage. The example the rep gave me was: If you root and phone overheats as a result of rooting, then they wouldn't cover that.

Thanks for all of the replies! They're very helpful. How can I tell if my s4 has the mf3 firmware and what exactly is the difference between mf3 and the other?
Just wanted to add that the last three digits for my baseband are mdl so im assuming I dont have the mf3 software as of yet. I have a software update available. Should I update or just root the phone as it is now?

Do not update, root and rename the files associated with updating.

If you want to be able to root AND flash ROMs, do not update to MF3. There is no method for loading a custom recovery for phones that have updated to MF3.
There is a thread in the General section about rooting an MF3 phone, but at this point you won't be able to flash a ROM.

I just won a Galaxy S 4 At&t, but I'm a T-Mobile Guy. The device is coming to me unlocked, if I can get it off of Edge and running correctly, do I flash At&t custom rom or T-Mobile?
I would think At&t and go with the device model but I could be wrong.
i'd flash ATT roms and manually input my tmobile APNs. be sure to follow the correct procedures for rooting/flashing on our bootloader-locked devices. if your device arrives with the MF3 build, read up before you proceed as there are many ways to brick your device on that firmware release. cheers
I would sell it while it's still brand new, unused. Get the maximum dollar for it. Then go and buy a T-Mobile S4.
The biggest reason is, you don't want the AT&T locked bootloader. If you get an OLD S4, then you can flash custom ROM's. If you get an S4 with the most recent firmware on it, then you're screwed and can't flash any custom ROM's.
Either way, if you're not an AT&T user then DON'T get an AT&T S4.

Well, if he chooses to keep that phone, there's an option BUT ONLY if the phone came with MDB/MDL update. Then he can use loki to bypass the locked bootloader and install custom roms.
Just an option, not great but still an option :cyclops:
Personally, I'd go with CZ Eddie's post lol
Excuse me sir, how can I win an s4?

The device might update itself if it connects to the network. Don't connect to your wifi until you know what version you have. The MF3 update closes the exploit that was being used to root, I believe.
Hi. So i just bought a i337 i guess this is the at&t right. So i can flash any rom as long as i have the loki kernel right. And yes i have the MDL so i guess is ok. To use loki. And is there a way to do a bootloader unlock?. Thanks

Ahh go here, it will explain how and what to do to run other carriers roms on your newly won g4...
[GUIDE][ROMS]RUN OTHER CARRIER ROMs on AT&T/TMO/Canadian S4 devices. Here's how! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295557
to use with straight talk, and I just have to bug you all with a few questions.
The basics: I have an active Straight Talk sim card that I want to put in my galaxy S4 that I just purchased (did not know it was Sprint until it was too late). Now, after hours of trying, bricking, unbricking, rooting and getting false hope from the [HOWTO] / [GUIDE] SPH-L720 Domestic SIM Unlock T-Mobile:AT&T:metroPCS:Straighttalk thread (which I assume would be my answer to my problem if not for the fact every attempt at flashing to mf9 bricks my phone because Odin fails everytime), I don't know what to do.
As of right now, my Sprint GS4 has been factory reset to Android V 4.3, baseband version L720VPUEMJA, with the model # SPH-L720. Can I even achieve what I want to do with these parameters and is there anyone out there willing to give me hand?
Thanks for any replies!
First you didn't completely read through the thread, secondly you can't go back so to unlock you need to flash a MDC modem and follow instructions

.
I mean. I read a lot. I'll be the first to admit I just may not have picked up on something in those 35 pages. Also, i believe I tried to flash my modem through the Odin one-click, but the process would hang when trying to establish the connection. I know the answer is on this forum somewhere, and I can usually follow these type of tech tutorial fairly well, but I'm just stuck. Do you have any specific advice?
If you are on the OTA MJA modem with MJA bootloader with Knox I do not think you can downgrade to any other previous modem without the issues you are describing with bricking and soft bricking.

You wouldn't have a link to that modem file? Maybe I was trying to us the wrong one. I was using "SPH-L720_MDC_Modem.tar.md5", and the program would just stall.

You can downgrade let me find a link
First unlock for international use: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415587 follow that guide then go over to domestic and get a unactivated sim card to make sure its working I used T-Mobile unlocked it then canceled my sprint contract. Only downside is for aosp ROMs you have to do a couple edits for them to work
And always run Odin as admin

It worked! ...kind of! I can now make calls, which is a HUGE step forward! Thank you so much!
The only thing is that I cannot send/receive multimedia messages, I have tried all the APNs listed at this page http://apn-settings.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-straight-talk-apn-settings/, but none work. Any ideas?

The same. You need unlock code for it.
Nevermind, I got it to work.
PSA and to all future readers: If you're using a note 3 from CANADA (n900w8), and you flash a hlte/cm based custom rom on it, you will NOT be able to unlock your phone using the unlock code from your original carrier while you're on the custom rom (as it's carrier is 'general'; see below) -- you need to revert back to stock (I had bell) and then throw in the unlock code for the original carrier for it to unlock.
What I theorize is that you'll be able to use a general unlock code rather than a carrier specific unlock code to work when on a general (ie. cm) based rom however.
Not really understand what you are saying. Anyway thank you for sharing
