I think the default Android camera app sucks. I know there will be ways to install other camera applications (or at least a ROM with a different camera) once the whole permanent root thing is figured out, but is there any way to tell if the camera hardware is capable of tapping to focus?
...or is it really all just software?
I know the camera application from the Desire was made available for the Nexus One as a standalone package without flashing a Sense ROM, but I couldn't find any information whether or not tap focusing worked on it.
On stock? Nope xD

...no, I know that it would work with the stock application. I was asking if it would work properly if a camera application from another ROM was ported to it.
Yea I think it would work imo since I've tried the i9000 camera on my samsung vibrant Point is the i9000 has a smile mode where it takes pics when you smile on the contrary vibrant doesn't have that on stock

Hey folks. Wondering if someone can chime in on the possibility of this...
I want the Camera app from the factory LG rom to work on AOSP phones. only because its HDR ability was much better than any app I have tried to fill that void since I switched to CM. Also it's Manual focus was a nice feature among many other things.
I assume it'd need LG's Framework as well to make it work, but if anyone can try to piece this together, or get me the files Id need (I'm no longer on LG's rom) Id be very grateful!

Focal is going to perform roughly the same as stock CM camera. We need the stock LG camera from the G2 as it can better interface with the hardware, not to mention has device specific tuning for the hardware. No other camera will be able to compete with the stock G2 camera.
To the request, i spent some time trying to get it to work few days ago. Not much progress, others have posted that hey manged to get the camera app to completely start up and take pictures, i have not made this much progress. Wish they would have posted theirs.
There is already a discussion about this in the Att-dev section.

Focal doesnt work for me. I'm on newest CM nightly, and pressing the shutter button in focal causes a FC every time.
As an update, I took the apks and odexs from the LG rom for LGCamera CameraTestApp, LGGallery and the framework-res from the old rom. I tried sideloading the apps with no luck, they wont even show up in my app drawer. I assume I need to install the LG framework alongside CM framework, but that's beyond me.

The newest CM update added HDR and it seems to work exactly as with LG camera app. But we still need 13MP. CM's app is 8MP currently.

Hi, is it not possible to download the lg package from one of the g2 standard roms some of them have packages with all the original g2 apps in or am i mistaken about what you want ?
Is this what you were looking for?
Edit: It's a WIP, but hopefully it will work well soon.

Although this camera is awesome. We can't use the volume to take pics. Fc every time. Also burst mode Fc and shutter sound still goes off even though you enable it.
I love the ui of lenovo very aesthetic.
Just with burst mode worked with the volume button.

Amalence makes the software the G2 uses for image processing, and they also have their own Camera software. It's virtually identical to LG's stock camera app, it just has a different skin.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.almalence.opencam
If you compare the stock to this, you'll see what I mean. It's the same camera as stock but with a different (IMO, better) skin.

Do you have a source for saying amalence is the company making LG's camera software? The program is similar yes, but not as good in my opinion. The HDR images are slower to snap and don't look as good to me. There is no "VR Panorama" or whatever LG called their photosphere mode

Note that the A_Better_Camera requires time to take 3 separate images, a good 1-1.5 seconds. The results are good tho.
I highly prefer the CM camera's HDR to A better camera, and I can't honestly tell the difference from the lg camera. The only thing missing is photosphere. I can use Focal for that, oddly enough that's the only feature that works in focal for me.

I switched as well. Loved the HTC, thought it would hold me over past my normal 4 months. I was wrong, lol. Was and is a great phone. The g2 is better in my opinion. But comes with tradeoffs depending on your likes. Boom sound, miss them, but adjusted quickly, and believe it or not, I actually liked and miss blink feed. But taptu is a cool news app that you can incorporate all news you like. Phones are almost same size but yet. 5 difference in screen size. Screen is phenomenal on this phone, battery, forget it, I get average 25 hrs with 4 hrs plus screen time and plenty of calling, 2 push emails, loads of texts. Hard to kill battery. So basically, I was weary as well, made the change, and am very satisfied with this device.
And another one who switched from the ONE. Only regretting it a little bitregarding to HTC's update Speed but overal I'm happy with the G2.
The package what the G2 offers is pretty good and you can't go wrong as long you don't mind waiting a little bit longer for Updates

G2=best phone on the market ATM. But I guess it all depends on what makes a phone best to you. G2 has got everything going for it besides the actual feel. I hate this slippery *****.

After 5 warranty returns (purple camera), at&t offered to exchange my One for another device. I chose the G2. I've been using it for the last day now, and am really contemplating on keeping it. It comes with a great amount of useful software features (notification while charging! Tap screen to wake..and more.) Obviously the audio is not as good, but I don't spend a lot of time watching movies or anything on my phone, so I can get over that!
Battery life seems to be incredible thus far.
I am also pretty happy with the camera as well. The colors look sharp. I think people look a little washed out or cartoonist on the screen in indoor lighting , but the stock app does some processing afterwards correct it. I'd like to post some camera shots to compare since I still have my One. It is Thanksgiving tho, so perhaps tomorrow ?
One negative I will bring up is the auto brightness. I don't know if others have this since I'm new to this device, but auto brightness doesn't seem to work very well, so I downloaded Lux from play store and it works great. So it must be LG 's logic

Auto brightness on stock blows. Very slow and wonky. Lux app removed the problem for me. Even on my last 3 lg devices, the auto brightnes was slow and sucked. Expected it.

Weigh out the pros and cons. In the end, it really comes down to what you want. I suggest playing with both of them in a best buy store since they have the Nexus 5 in the Google section.

Those issues are not widespread from the post you provided. I don't have most of those issues. IMO, G2 is a step up from Nexus 5. Nexus 5 definitely can't compete with the battery of the G2, or the camera. Also, stock Android is overrated if you ask me. Not every single feature of the G2 is useful, but most of them are. The Nexus 5 hardly has anything special about it.

I'll let you gain insight into my experience with this device.
Bad voice calls are not an issue. My voice calls are really loud and clear and I use quite some time doing calls. Gps usually locks within a few seconds if I'm about the same position and even when I'm not, it takes no longer than 10 seconds to lock my position.
Regarding that post : well you read how the solution to all those problems was to get a replacement because it's simply not normal for the g2. I do have the stuttering issue with xda-developers app. I don't know why this occured, it wasn't there from the beginning.
That said, do NOT expect upgrades for the G2. If you choose to buy it, you acknowledge to stay on 4.4 (once we receive it) because LG are really bad with updating their phones. If you intend on flashing custom ROM then it shouldn't bother you. Stock is awesome though and has a lot of features.
My two cents

I have had this device for 2 days coming from an HTC one which died
The htc one is a beautiful device with build quality second to none however, my new G2 has excellent build quality too IMO despite many opinions to the contrary. I intended not to root my device (skygo requires an un-rooted device) but yesterday I went ahead and did so for one reason and one reason only - so that I could use GMD auto hide soft keys pro - an app which enables you to utilise the whole of the screen all of the time.
Now I have a beautiful 5.2 inch screen in a device that is the same size as my previous HTC one which only had 4.7 inches of screen estate. I am very, very happy with my new device in comparison to my previous one which, incidently, cleaned up in the best mobile device awards.
Its down to you lol. I was in the same boat as you but went for the G2. Better battery and bigger screen. Hopefully the 4.4 update will bring a better camera. I think nexus 5 camera is better mainly because it focuses much much quicker. Got my G2 for the same price as a nexus 5

i had the N5 before my G2, and the G2 is far better. The battery life is about double that of the N5, i get on average 6 hrs screen time per day. Also the rear buttons are amazing!:good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good::good:

I had my G2 rooted too (even flashed Hellfire Rom). But first step was to restore stock Rom and finally I flashed stock software to unroot and reset my device to be prepared for the official OTA update. After the KitKat update, I'll root again to optimize this awesome phone with Xposed modules and Romtoolbox Pro.
But this is just for fun. Basically, the LG G2 is so full of features out of the box together with great hardware that rooting let alone flashing is nothing you have to do to make the G2 awesome. Because it's awesome by nature...

My brother has the 5 and i have the g2. the funny thing - we both love our phones but we do like each others a little more.
Nexus 5 - P/C's: google created and always up to date, no bloatware, feels a bit better in my hand, [IMO] takes better pictures but the UI leaves many things to be desired, lower battery life. If I had the nexus 5, I'd feel like i would no reason to use a custom ROM, just root and xposed
G2 - P/C's: dat screen size, buttons on the back [if you like that], good battery life, stock bloatware isnt that bad, and the UI as a whole isnt bad, you can get ALMOST the exact feel of the n5 with a kit kat rom [but all the rom related issues ]. I like my g2 but just wish we could get kit kat out officially so I can just root and xposed and i like the blinking button on the top rather than bottom
G2... I love this phone. I have yet to root this thing and I have no complaints. Call quality is great, wifi and 4G perform wonderfully, I noticed that the phone switches between the various modes (4g, 2g, etc) really quickly and I rarely have issues surfing the web. The camera is awesome, the speakerphone is adequate, no buttons on the sides of the phone is awesome, and I prefer the G2 location of the headphone jack at the bottom of the phone. Battery life is insane! I've gone two full days with moderate use (down to 2% before I plugged the phone in), and with heavy use I get at least 28 hours before I see the battery get into the 10-20% range. Finally I can hand my daughter my phone so she can keep herself busy for an hour or so and not worry about having enough juice to make it through the rest of the day.
All of the included apps have added useful features and it seems that they have pulled some of the best/favorite tweaks and made them part of their default app suite. For the first time in quite sometime, I have not felt the need to root or modify the phone, save for that Android soft key bar at the bottom of the screen, I hate that thing. I might root just to run an app that removes it.
I'm not a person that likes to root, i will use it as it is, with stock rom, it's enough to have good call quality, to feel productive with it and have no lag, feeling good in hand, and battery life of course , i'm a designer and i need good camera, and i think it has a great one. thanks all for the comments, i'm going with G2.
It would be so sweet if the G3 got a camera interface upgrade to match the G4, the potential on this camera is great it just sucks that i have to use some third party apps to push it to its potential.
The biggest ball breaker is when these apps insist on storing on the phone and not the sd card.
I was looking to see if LG had any plans to upgrade and cant see anything? Its a real shame.

I don't think they insist that much on sd writing since it's slower specially in bust mode by example. But still I agree with you, keep in perspective that the g4 cam is having lots of feature not include in the g3. One thing in sure you won't ever so lge doing anything with the stock cam app

Sent from my SPH-L720 using XDA Free mobile app
the G4 interface on the cloudy G3 2.3 is working. However, the manual mode is not functioning right. For example you can't change shutter space, white balance etc..
Then if you just want the camera since the features will never be able to be handled by our G3 just install the ported app. Everything works except of course Manuel mode
Its the manual shoot functions that really are needed to give the camera a performance increase.
Again don't want to be a joy killer
