could be a DNS issue? Is it a wifi network you setup? Does it have manual dns or do you enter DNS into the wifi settings of the phone? Or is everything supposed to be set automatically?

has anybody fixed these problems?
i had this problem before as well.. goto settings>connection tab. click on connections and manage existing connections. then then click on proxy settings.. uncheck the box that says This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet.
hope this helps
im using vodafone and it doesnt work for me too BUT ... it doesnt work cause the weatherdata doesnt seem to be standard port 80. Vodafone blocks everythign else (through wap.vodafone.com it does at least).

Hi,
My hero used to work great until I got a new router (Netgear WNR2000). Since then, I cant access the Android market and other apps that require net. Are there any ports I should open on the router?
Thanks.
Have you updated the settings on your hero to match your router?
You will find them on the bottom of it(router).
Hope this helps.
Try setting the router to g only, rather then g and n. Worked for me.

which settings do you mean?
Does your Hero connect to the router?
If not you may be using the wrong Wi-Fi password (for example that of your former router).
Use a browser and enter the IP 192.168.0.1 for router setup in order to change it.
Also if possible disable Hi-speed Wi-Fi (N).
If your Hero is connected to the router then check ADSL settings - usually bad username/password - (always using the routers web interface) as you may not be connected to the internet.

When i changed my router i had to goto:
menu>settings>wireless networks>wi-fi settings and add the router as a new network.
Thanks for all the replies.
The thing is, I can check my email, surf the net etc... but none of the Android things work... market, widgets that require internet access

Sounds like the router is suppressing protocol/socket types, ie, permitting 8080 but not other sockets.
Also, try turning on DMZ.
I have exactly the same router and the same problem. My hero works fine with all routers except the one I own.
All
I have my htc setup to both internet sharing and Wi-Fi connection on my work PC with a lan connection. On both of these connections e.g. wired USB and wireless i can get the internet for about 3 minutes then it stops working. Is there some sort of block? I did see a while back that the WiFi app has no restrictions...
Any help would be superb.
Cheers
Baker0
Thats a little odd, there is certainly no block and I have had the wifi router running for a good 30-40 minutes without failing.
what part is failing, is the phone no longer running the wifi router, or is the pc no longer getting internet on that network connection?
If you need help on how to find this info just reply and I can walk you through some more diagnostic steps.
The phone is still running just the internet stops on the machine. I have to stop the wi fi on the phone then start again then connect. I think it might be t-mobile but the internet on the phone is fine
are you in the uk?
if you connect your laptop to the phone via the wifi router you should be able to right click the network logo, click on status and view the wifi network info, it should tell you in there if it has internet access on that network connection.
If you try this again and when it fails check this status window and see if windows is seeing an internet connection or not?
when the net fails again try and visit http://72.14.203.100/ (this should be the google homepage) if you see google then there is a dns problem if it still says network timeout or failed to connect or something like that then we will have to dig further.
LOL thanks for your help. I am in the UK. ive been working in IT for the last 12 years and I know and have done the test, its not the machine it has something to do with the phone or t-mobile network
Sorry to hijack your thread a little, but I'm on the T-Mobile Network in the UK too (except I'm using a Touch Pro with a custom ROM), and although I can make connections from the PC to websites using the IP address, the DNS isn't working so I can't resolve domain names.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Steve.

It must be the phone then since I do use wifi router, I am on t-mobile and in the UK and I do not experience this :S
I seem to be saying this more and more but maybe you should try a hard reset and see if that fixes the problem?

This is likely an issue with the way your machine has been setup to connect to the wifi network. Try visting the properties of the network and vieing the dns settings for the tcp/ipv4, It should be set as Obtain DNS server addresses automatically. If it is set like this then try setting it too 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 these are googles, dns servers if this works for you then you could stick with this or do some further digging as to why you are not getting the dns server addresses automatically like you should be.

Setting the DNS entries to Google's makes it work, but attempting to get the DNS Server's automatically leaves me with no ability to resolve domain names. How strange?
Thanks for the workaround, not sure where to start looking to fix it properly.

Steve.
Hey guys,
I am new to this wifi router thing and got the following questions:
1. To be able to use it, you must have data connection with your provider. Am I right?
2. By any chance, can I use this system by using a sim taken out of a prepaid mobile broadband dongle and inserted into my device (htc touch HD)?
3. Once I get connected can I surf the internet/check emails etc from within the device itself without the need to use a laptop?
Please don't mind these basic stupid questions.
cheers
Hi my friends ...
I have problem in connecting to a vpn server .
I create a pptp server and I enter server ip and username and password.
when I'm trying to connect it,it says : Unable to connect the network.
I use this vpn connection on my PC and there is no problem and it work correctly.
Double checked all the settings? Make sure you're getting the right IP address, etc.
Is this VPN within a Local network or somewhere remote?

Yep ... I checked it one hundred times.
I think it's a local network ....
I don't know exactly !
If it is local, from where are you trying to connect? Wi-Fi? 3G?

I'm trying to connect with Wi-Fi .
With 1.6 my VPN also did not work. Try to upgrade to android 2.1 and test again.
Hi my problem is that, I can't connect my own wifi network. It stops at "obtaining IP adress from...". My laptop can connect to it and i can connect with my phone to other wlan networks too. Could anyone help me? Thanks
Are you sure that you typed password correctly?
Maybe you have mac adress filtering?
I guess u have DCHP enabled and not static IP right? Try push and hold your network's name on the available networks list and then "Forget Network". Then rescan and try connecting. Sometimes it works.
go into you router and set the DNS?
hi the password is correct I've updated my phone to the latest version because i thought that maybe the software in my phone gone wrong.

log into your router (normally 192.168.1.1), and check if you have DCHP enabled.
or you could try rebooting your router and connecting your phone first then your laptop.
Hi I1ve tried both solutions but none of them works:/ I don't know what should i do. my girlfriend can't connect with her optimus too

sounds liek you router isn't assigning IP correctly, try restarting it and checking for firmware updates
Thanks for all now it's working (after a firmware update)
