[Q] Nexus 7 as Small Gaming Setup - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the Nexus 7, and i used to use it during school a lot. It's easy to carry around and can be pulled out at a seconds notice. Since I got my HTC One, and Samsung Chromebook though, I've noticed my tablet just sits there, not doing much really.
I've loaded the tablet up with emulators, and am currently in the process of loading it with ROMs. My question is has anyone used their Nexus 7 for old school gaming? Maybe more of a permanent setup as well? I have an OTG cable, dualshock to usb adapters, original xbox controller with usb(Featured an article on how to use original xbox controllers on nexus 7, a few months back that i wrote) and the xbox 360 wireless dongle.
My main plan was to cut the cable down on the 360 wireless dongle, just so it was long enough to maybe velcro onto the back of the tablet, and then just use a 360 controller with it. would I be able to use the official nexus charging dock with it and still have enough power to power the dongle? or would the dongle probably draw too much power for the nexus to stay powered for an undisclosed amount of time?

I find the nexus 7 great for retro gaming.
However rather strangely dock charging and OTG do not work in unison, strange but true!
There is however some kernels that support OTG plus charging using an "OTG charging cable" timurs usb kernel and faux kernel are two that i know of.
I had alot of problems myself with timurs kernel, however others seem to have no issues. I have faux kernel myself but havnt played around with it much as i purchased a ps3 joystick to get round the issue.
I might be wrong but i think using ps3 joysick while charging discharges slowly. But should add i have a third party charger as i blew the one up that came with my nexus.

So I should just buy a ps3 controller and use the sixaxis app that way its over bluetooth, and not draining battery and can still charge?

Definitely get the Six axis controller app and look for the AndPair apk here on XDA so that you won't have to find a windows computer to sync it. Less hassle that way

I think that it does slowly discharges, mind you I have been playing some graphically intense games recently and overclocking etc.
Sixaxis can pair without a pc. I also went as far as changing the Bluetooth mac address on my phone to math me tablet. Saves me having to keep pairing with sixaxis .

Is it possible to use the Nexus 10 to recharge the smartphone?

As the title says, I'd like to do this, use the smartphone as a wifi hotspot for the nexus 10, but since the hotspot drains the battery heavily, and its likely that when ill turn the tablet on, the smartphone has already been on for many hours, id like to know if it would be possible to connect the two with a cable, so that the smartphone gets some power from the tablet's battery, thus prolonging the smartphone's battery life for the day.
Thanks all!
No, I tried with my nexus 7 and it would not turn on for 3 hours

What the phone you charge ?
It may work with an OTG cable so the tablet is pumping juice and not receiving..
Back in the day my XOOM could power a 2.5" WD Passport HDD, or charge my HTC Desire. Got rid of it before I could test it on my SGS2 and SGS3 and Galaxy Note though.

Will the nexus 10 support otg? I heard that otg support for the nexus 7 is somewhat limited or something...
I'm using the OTG cable for connecting my hard drive (powered) and ps3 control pad to it. Works perfectly fine

OTG cable for external HD and charging.. a simple noob way?

Hi,
I have read an awful lot of threads regarding this topic but have become more and more confused I have a Nexus 7 3G and have the tablet mounted in my car with a Samsung S3 1TB portable drive using stickmount playing music through Poweramp which is all working beautifully until the battery runs flat. I have unlocked and rooted the tablet using the wugs toolkit and nothing more. I do not know what a kernel really is and people are talking about different kernels and roms to enable charging with a y shaped otg cable but am completely confused by this. Can someone please help me out with a simple explanation on how to do this please? and also anyone know where in the UK I would be able to buy one of these cables? and lastly I have a 2amp use charger through the cars 12v cigarette lighter that I would like to use to charge in this setup...would that be enough or would I have to get a mains inverter? Many thanks for reading...
Anyone?

Nexus 4 - Xbox 360 charging problem

Hi guys,
currently having a problem with my xbox 360 charging my Nexus 4...
basically i put my nexus on charge (usb cable from xbox 360) over night and it clearly said its charging, so i woke up the next morning and the battery % was as i left it, but it still clearly says charging? this has happen to me twice this week... has anyone else had a problem like this?
forgot to mention, i have always charged my mobile devices using the xbox 360 and never had any problems before...
Maybe try other cables?
I have had similar issues with phones in the past where certain cables worked and some didn't.
accidently gave u a thx I had this problem with all my phones trying to charge them with my PS3 or PC. With my PS it charged 1-2% and with my PC a bit slower than normally. I think its the bad electricity supply over usb

true, it could be... but i charge my samsung galaxy s2 using same method and that charges up fine without problems...
I have no problems with my 360'
But why would you keep your Xbox running at night to charge your iPhone??
Better use a wall charger. It charges faster, and is cheaper..

I had similar issues while charging through my laptop, My phone would say charging, meanwhile it would be discharging
I think it has to do with the phone using more power than the port is giving out. Basically some apps you have one your phone is using so much battery that the charger is not charging because the required power to run the phone is greater than the charge is giving. I'm thinking this is becasue the phone has so much RAM that all the background apps are using more and more power. It's like charging a Laptop through your Xbox USB port, the laptop uses WAY too much power for it to be getting charged through a measly USB port.
Nonetheless, I stopped charging my phone through my laptop and just plugged it in the wall. It charges way faster anyway (my charging usually takes 2 hours when it's really low to full battery)
Even if it does charge, it's not likely to charge well; the Nexus 4's charger is 1.2 amps. The Xbox USB ports likely put out less than half that. Unless you have an S model, in which case the rear "Kinect" port is "high-powered," which likely means 1.0 amps.
I'm charging off my AirPort Extreme without issue...albeit it slow. Since I charge at night, it's a non-issue. OP, have you tried swapping USB cable?
Does the Xbox 360 temporarily disable its USB port if you try to pull to much power from them?
The Nexus 4 requires more than what is supplied...
uberSlackr could be right, normal usb ports are 5volts,500mah, so 5 volts standby, you should be able to charge even at a slow rate, windows 7 has an option to turn off usb ports to save power unless you disable it.maybe xbox has a similar power saving function.
samsung s2 max charging rate is at 650mah, my nexus charger is 1.2amps, so 1 amp draws too much.

yes, i've tried changing the cable and its the same... i believe the comments above have explained it much clearly to me and make me understand why its not charging (xbox usb being 500 mah and the phone needs 1.2 amp... so looks like i will have to use my wall charger from now on)
i appreciate the help guys!! :good:

[Q] fast charge kernel

I must be doing something wrong, but can't figure out what
I wanted to enable fast charge, cause my device drains more battery than it charges, I installed the "fast charge" app from the play store, but it always says my kernel is unsupported.
I've already tried these kernels:
-franco (franco kernel updater)
-fugumod (fugumod updater)
-trinity (trinity kernel toolkit)
-faux (fauxClock)
-timur
and I've searched in each app for a place to switch it on but couldn't find it anywhere.
I'm running cyanogenmod 10.1
the tablet is rooted and unlocked.
anyone any idea what could be the problem?
thanks for your time!
Give NCX Kernel a go, I'm nearly 100% sure (99.9999%) that has fastcharge enabled.

so far, I've been unable to find a zip with that NCX kernel, so I could flash it, can you provide me with a link or something?
I only find .img files, and I'm unsure what I have to do with them :s
Don't waste your time. If you tread the reviews, your problem is common with that app. Download Trickster Mod and use that asp.
Also, fast charge isn't going to have any effect if you're plugged into an ac outlet.

Like najaboy said, fast charge has no effect using an ac charger. Only speeds up charging if your charging via USB.

Does fast charge via USB even exist for the nexus 7, because so far this seems like some sort of vapourware joke that doesn't exist.
My device is shot, the headphone jack has gone bad, and now regardless of what I do I will always get charging from USB. It won't connect to the PC, and won't power devices from an otg cable, I even made a fast charge usb cable that tricks the device into thinking its an ac power source..... It works with everything but this, so its safe to assume that if indeed there is no fast charge I will take great pleasure in smashing this to bits.
Has to be up there with the first generation Xbox 360 as one of the worst build quality devices ever made.

And even then only if the active USB device (e.g. powered hub) is also designed to not current clamp or fault-open at currents above 500 mA. It takes two to tango.
Even when it does work, it's nowhere near as fast as a 2A AC adapter, btw.
USB 3 can output 900mA

Any change to resolve this issue?
I have a 2A usb car charger, but is I use GPS programs (like waze) , battery drain in too high , and charging current is not enough.
Any Fast Charge supporting kernel could be the solution.
It worked very well in my previous Galaxy Nexus phone.
Any idea?

A kernel with fast charge is inapplicable to your situation. You simply need ausb cable that had the d+ and d- pins shorted.

Charging slowly? Consider your cable.

I usually stick with the OEM charger and cable with devices but since the Shield K1 doesn't ship with either I was using another cable I had around.
I noticed the tablet was discharging while in use even on a 2A charger. I tested the charger's power consumption with a wattmeter and found it was only running about 1A. The cable was inadequate. Trying different cables was an illuminating experience.
I found some informative sites about this. Here are my favorites.

Ive seen some other people asking about charging problems in console mode so I figured this might be useful info.
I'm using the following charger for my nexus 7 2013 and the new nvidia sheild tablet k1 (I can play remote game and play portal and half-life and the tablet charging)
aukey 2.4 amp
here the link

Those are some really informative links. Thanks for that.
Noticed that too! Bought some days ago an longer USB cable (3m) but used it with the original charger. During gaming battery drops, with original cable it doesn't load but also doesn't drop, strange....
yeah, also bought some generic cable (1.5m long) but im using the oem charger/adaptor of nvidia shield tablet, since i broke the tip (micro usb port) of the oem cable.. there is a noticeable slowness in charging.. so, with regards to charging time, it's not always the adaptor itself, you can also consider the cable..
I had similar experiences using other devices.
I recall reading recently that there are estimates that *more than* 50% of USB cable manufactuered in 2014 were fakes. The trend was not going down - who knows, it might be 60% in 2016 :|
I use the app ampere and tested all my cables and chargers and sound that some cables would max charge at 150ma, and others at 2000

Ampere doesn't work with the shield tablet.
I tested with the shield tablet k1, marshmallow update. Just always showed 0mah. I put up a review explaining it, but the developer simply flagged the device as incompatible rather than trying to fix it.
I have a usb detector device from amazon tho, and I get 1.2 to 1.8 amps with if I use my galaxy s5s charger. Oddly out of the 4 different ones i have, thats the fastest. I read it supports quick charge 2.0 so I gota fancy charger with that that does supports it, 2.1 amps.. But it actually charges much slower then the samsung one - Yet chargers my actual S5 at the same rate, so I just swapped the cables and leave it like that.
PS: Was charging MEGA SLOW no matter what before I did this fix:
chmod a-x logd in terminal emulator.
(This also greatly enhanced battery life)
Also charges much slower with screen on.

Actually, ampere is working with the second update for the k1. You can get it from the thread here at xda if he hasn't fixed it in the play store yet
