Hey all, I'm an old viewer of XDA, but I just recently created an account to post comments and create posts.
I just need to get a confirmation that devices running JB and ICS can't be rooted through an application on the phone that's standalone.
Can someone please confirm?

I may be wrong but I haven't seen anything that can be ran on the phone itself to root. Its probably something a lot of dev's are considering, as PC's and laptops are on the decline these days, with a lot of people moving to smartphone/tablets. Below are links to two different methods which will get you rooted.
CF AutoRoot

Galaxy S4 toolkit

Root - Linux (no Odin)

I understand that, but I'm looking for a confirmation that not a single app can root your JB or ICS phone. I know this used to be done on GB and Froyo, but I need a confirmation that it's not there for JB & ICS

Had a look on Google and there appears to be an apk root method, but its for the Galaxy S4 Active model.

Hey everyone,
I've been having issue where I cant download anything directly to my SD card. It occured after the 4.4 update. I get messages of insufficient space or download failed. I cant download pic, pdfs or videos. The only way I can save to SD is downloading to the device then moving it with the file manager. Any ideas?
Ive formatting the card a few times already.
Thanks
Brian

Hey Brian! This is a known issue. A quick search in this 4.4 update discussion thread of the in the Q&A section of the forum should've given you the answer. There's also a flashable fix in the development forum.
*Remember to search first before asking :good:
Thank you Kevin,
I did search the forums beforehand. Unfortunately all I could find were fixes for Rooted S4's. I received the official OTA two days ago. Would you happen to know where I could find a solution for my unrooted device?
Any help would be great.
Thanks!

Oh you're not rooted..well currently, I don't think there's any until Samsung realizes and pushes out a small update for the users not rooted.
You should root your device! Super simple process and a whole lot of benefits

It's not an issue, it is by design. Google wants you to use the cloud and not an sdcard to store data so they removed functionality of the sdcard with kit kat. Kind of like when they removed the ability to move apps to the sdcard after gingerbread. Hopefully Samsung will defy Google again and add functionality of the sdcard back in a future update like they did when they added the ability to move apps to the sdcard with mf9. But if you want to have it now you will need to root your phone.
Yeah that's tough not being rooted. I would be pissed a throwing a fit with Sprint. They've disabled a function of the phone. Seems like it could become a legal issue if the right people got involved.
All the more reason to root and live free.

Guys it's not a Smasung issue... It's GOOGLE that did it purposely. They are slowly trying to get rid of external SD cards for whatever reasons -__-

Reality is whoever is "at fault" ... you might as well sell me a 5 inch screen but only let me use 4 inches of it ... I purchased this phone because it has the sd card function. I might just call and complain to Sprint myself.

Sprint has nothing to do with it. IT IS GOOGLE!!!!!!!!! How many times does it have to be spelled out for you. GOOGLE wants you to use the cloud not the device. They want you to pay high data rates to use your content. Calling Sprint will do nothing, if you want to complain, flood Google with complaints about eliminating sdcard writing with Kit Kat! Or root you damn phone and fix it yourself.
Hey guys
Not sure how active it is here anymore. Just wondered if anyone could help me I've been away travelling for nearly three years and haven't really touched my 10, just saw on reddit a cool build I'd like to try on it. But, I'm on a rooted device running 4.2.2. And an OLD AOKP build. Now to update to the official lollipop how do I go about that? My macbook is broken too so thats another issue can it all be done from my device? Sorry for my ignorance not touched or messed with rooting etc for a long time...
Thanks very much for any info
Use wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit:

You can't flash bootloaders or radios within the device. You need fastboot to flash those and you'll need a computer to use fastboot. If you get access to a computer you can set up adb and fastboot pretty easily or use WugFresh's toolkit that was previously recommended.
So yeah for the past actually 3 days now I've been trying to get root access on one of these little wish android boxes and I'm not getting anywhere, I've tried one click root apps like KingRoot and TowelRoot but I think I've been led on there.. the TV itself says it's running Android 11 and from what I can tell it is. I'm starting to suspect that KingRoot and the like can't defeat Android 11 despite what my epic google skills have led me to believe.
Any help at all would be much appreciated!
upload your firmware. maybe it is possible to root.
