[Q] Restore twrp backup - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, sorry for the noob question. I'm rooted, stock with twrp recovery. If I flash a custom rom and then decide to go back to my backup is it just a case of booting into recovery, hit restore backup and that's it? Or do I have to take specific steps like wiping anything first/after.
Just want to cover my bases before I go ahead in case my kitten explodes or anything.
Thanks.
(Btw I did dearch first but theres a lot of conflicting answers and no clearly labelled steps, which I prefer.)

You just select "restore backup", and your phone will be restored to the state is was when you did the backup, regardless of you wiping before or not.

You need to the phone. To do that, the battery needs to be for a couple seconds then you can the battery in.

After that answer we can finally close this thread!
I ran into the same issue. I had stock, wanted to try Cm6, had to flash a different boot leaders to get Cm6 to flash properly.
Then I thought id see if I could go back to stock from a nandroid backup I made. Just as you had tried and I found out that I couldn't go back to stock via nandroid because of the same issue I had with going to Cm6 : the boot loader.
I made a nandroid backup up Cm6, booted to Cm6 and ran the 3.29.ruu exe on my desktop and this took me back to complete stock, even unrooted it.
So I rooted again via unrevoked, made a nandroid back up.
For the sake of testing I tried to restore from my nandroid backup of Cm6 and it worked. Then I restored back to stock via my nandroid and it worked.
Basically it came down to loader versions for me and bet that is your issue.
I know I rambled a bit but I think its relevant.

I need a little "Flashing ROM's 101" please

I just rooted my EVO 4g with Gingerbread yesterday. There is so much information on this site that I am having trouble finding the information that I need . The thread that showed me how to root was incredible. Step by step instruction led me to success on the first try. You guys are awesome....thanks. I feel like I need that on Flashing ROM's to have an understanding of it.
Where can I find the list of available ROM's?
How do I go about actually flashing the ROM?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank
http://noobgui.de/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
Look in the dev section for all available roms. Look in the stickies tab for instructions on flash. Basically, boot into recovery, make a nandroid backup, wipe everything except your sd card and then flash away. Before doing anything though read read read and read some more.
We're comin from a pure power source.
Welcome aboard ... lots to learn, but not complicated. There is a list of all the roms in the development stickies, but reading through that forum is your friend. There are rooted stock sense roms (which I would try first), lots of themed variations, and aosp (cm, deck, salvage, omgb). Probably the most important thing to learn is how to wipe properly between flashing different roms, especially between sense and aosp. In recovery it's pretty self explanatory, just be sure to always backup ... including your wimax keys. In addition to wiping, I always flash Calkulin's "format all" zip before a new rom.
If you find yourself preferring aosp, be sure to keep a sense rooted backup, so that you'll be able to update your profile and prl. Be sure to read, read, search, and then ask your questions. Everything you need to know, has been asked and answered many times ... good luck.
Thanks guys. Already very helpful. Lots of info here. I'll update you on what happens
Like my man wmdunn said a few posts back.... Read, read, read and read some more.. The more informed you are the better your phone will run... Best of luck to you and FLASH ON!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. Don't think the script wipe will get every thing. and why use a script when recovery can do it for you.
i had a major issue just today, and it all had to do with me not wiping....very itchy.....and it was causing 1/2 my phone not to work.no phone calls,no messaging,no market, couldnt download anything from a website,it was nuts for the last 36 hrs.but it all had to do with wiping,or not wiping.and i was taught that as a toddler
Some Pointers
First of all get rid of clockwork (the growing consensus is that it doesn't wipe well)
Use Amon_RA instead.
Second, make a nandroid of your WIMAX and stash that in a very safe spot just in case your wimax gets corrupted somewhere down the line.
Then as others have said
1. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong
2. Wipe (x3) (You can also use a script like superwipe or KingsMOD-FORMAT_ALL)
3. Flash ROM, kernel, mods, etc.
4. Enjoy!

Sure I can switch to Amon_RA. You say to make a nandroid of my WIMAX. Is this just a normal backup or is there a way to specify to just back up the WIMAX keys?

....When in ROM Manager, click on the first item that says "Flash Clockworkmod Recovery"..that'll get you a recovery, to make a backup, and to flash a new ROM. And to bring it to stock, the stock ROMs are here, just choose 2.2.1 or 2.3.4, then flash in recovery, or rename to PD15IMG.zip and reboot into bootloader, sorry I forgot which one when flashing stock. FLASHING STOCK WILL TAKE AWAY YOUR ROOT! If you want rooted GB, gohere! Good luck!

Do NOT FLASH any Nexus 7 kernel into your Nexus 4. One fella here already bricked a NEXUS device (Nexus device are very difficult to brick to how open they are).
Other than that, do whatever you want with the phone. It's an Android, and it's a Nexus.

If you're new to the whole android scene....I strongly recommend that you just use the phone as you got it for 2 months FIRST.
While that's going on, read up through the forums, etc.
Just use it as it is first. =)
Id say the first thing you should do is get a case or a back film protector.
Then just read carefully if you want to start flashing. Read read and read again.
First few things to do with your phone
1. Charge it
2. Turn it on
3. Set up
4. Download apps you might need from play store (this will change over time )
5. Its a phone ffs use it as it is for few weeks. See what you like and what you don't. If you don't like something check if there is an app FIRST that will solve your problem . If you can't find an app think if its worth messing with the phone for one single tweak, unless you have found few things that bug you .
Stock android is nearly perfect and can do most/all of the things for normal user. Even customisation doesn't require root in most cases

Unlock the bootloader before you do anything on the phone. Unlocking it wipes all data, so best to do it when there's nothing on there anyway. Then it leaves you open to easily root in the future.

Download ROMs and kernels straight to your phone. You're going to need to install a recovery first. Open up GooManager and click the menu button then click Install OpenRecovery Script. That should install TWRP. Then, turn off the phone and then hold volume up and power until you feel a little vibration, when you feel a vibration let go of the power button but keep holding volume up until it says RECOVERY BOOTING.... in the top left. Once that boots up, you're gonna wanna make a backup then wipe /data, /system, /cache, and dalvik cache then install the ROM you downloaded followed by gapps if you're on an AOSP ROM and after i recommend install Ktoonsez kernel. once you've installed everything wipe cache and dalvik cache again and also fix permissions then reboot

It's actually super simple. Nobody wants you to hurt your shiny new GS4.
The only way it will be simple is if you educate yourself a little though. It's cool you've modded phones before. You know the risks..
Just read up in the provided threads, and if you still don't get it its cool. Ask a question in the stupid question thread. It's not there to be demeaning, it's there to reduce the amount of posts like this.
Read and ask questions in the appropriate areas, and profit. Good luck homie.
