When you say "custom recovery" what are you referring to....I have already made a completeback up. Or are you referring to a bootable backup. Bit of a noon when it comes to flashing as my phone has a locked boot loader.

À custom recovery is a thing where you can for example flash a rom or make some nandroid backups.
This guy makes some good videos on how to install them.

custom rom ( the top ones in development are great! Using Vanir nightly right now and it is fantastic) Or look in to Xposed framework. Dsp mods are great too.

I'm all for exposed, I currently have xprivacy, app settings, and gravitybox installed, with stock ROM.
I haven't found a reason to install a custom ROM.
Four hours??? Adb reboot - bootloader, fastboot oem unlock, fastboot Flash recovery, done.

No kidding on that. It probably took me longer than that to figure out what I was doing exactly. Having the time of life with my new toy. Currently running a slightly modified build of aosp including a kernel hacked to load the touch firmware I like. Going to try Paranoid Android out next.

AwesomeBeats is an audio mod by our form moderator ...Awesome...
Flash it on any ROM, and tweak the eq and bass, and you'll be having Awesome sound. I am an audiophile, who's craziy for the lowest and highest tones. Middle ones aren't my type. I've been using this mod for a long time, and I've often incorporated on my ROMs.

Er, it's a community for developers (hence the xda-developers name), not a tech support forum. Us non-developers just kind of piggyback on the developers' workspace here.
Usually, before asking questions, members are expected to do a little research on their own. Beginner guides, which have been written by good people, are stickied all over the forums for that purpose. Those will answer basic questions like "what is a custom recovery." Refusing to read them and cluttering up the threads/forums with questions that stickies could could have answered is a little disrespectful. Stick around a little longer; you'll see for yourself how annoying they get when you see them pop up constantly.
I admit that the person you're replying to could have been more polite, but most people who ask sticky-answerable questions will probably eventually get similar responses.
Why in the world did you wait 4 hours to do that? I did it within 15 minute of having the device.

Flash the original Rom via cwm or use odin... Then relock the bootloader. Just type OEM lock..

Hello everyone!
I am planning to buy a nexus 4 as soon as it is back in stock. I currently have a gs2 and I realized that it has some amazing Dev support. Most of my phones have been Samsung, so I am most familiar with their development. What I mean is the Odin is an easy one click solution to most problems, and there is even mobile Odin so I can flash on the go!
It is quite amazing, I just flashed a stock ROM to get a GPS lock then back to cm10.1 with no issue, without a computer. These things have saved me on multiple occasions.
My question is, is the development here as advanced or more advanced? Are there tools that easily allow you to root, back up, restore, and flash your phone?
I have a nexus 7 and there is a tool that does that for PC, is it compatible with the 4? And is there anyway to do that on the phone?
My biggest concern is getting in over my head. I recently tried the galaxy s 3 and thought I knew what I was doing, but there was a surprising lack of development there, and returning to stock took me hours and many Google searches. Want to make sure the process is simpler here before I start messing with my new nexus 4. I am never worried about breaking my gs2. But on my nexus 7 I have left it as stock rooted because I didn't want to venture too far into unknown territory.

I hate Odin. Give me fastboot and stock .img files and I'm "supported and prepared."
Also, before tackling a device, ALWAYS know how to fix a bootloop/soft brick. The fact that you're asking tells me you haven't read enough. No offense.

Used Odin on my T999,i9100/i9300, as well as i747.. It is nowhere near as simple as fastboot. Odin is great, sure but fastboot is much cleaner and much less can go wrong.
You started off on the right foot by asking and making this thread instead of just blindly flashing, so props. The two others that have responded are by far my favorites in the N4 forums simply because they know what they are talking about and respond much more than I do
Make sure you learn your fastboot commands and you will be able to recovery from bad flashes, etc easily and in a matter of minutes.
Also, the toolkit should only be used AFTER you are familiar with commands - and lastly it no longer links to stock images but a few members here have them on their personal dropbox accounts. I recommend downloading those so you have them handy.

+1 on fastboot commands.
Know those commands and invest some of your time learning at least the basics. It will get you out of sticky situations. Not just for N4 but for future Android devices you'll own. Avoid root kits or at least until you know the concept behind how it does its thing.

I keep the stock .img files, as well as the drivers and adb folder (including fastboot) in my drop box so that I can access them from any computer in a pinch.

Toolkits are great for quick fixes or more advanced things (like flashing without increasing the flash counter) but I always worry that maybe the version I have is out of date. I've used fast boot commands in the post. But they have always fine with detailed instructions in a preset folder. The more I know about android the better.

So I read the post about toolkits and I agree. But I have unbricked my phone using ADB before. And I think a toolkit like the nexus toolkit is useful because it has so many processes in one place. Easy and quick repairs for the flashaholic on the run. Though I will be rooting and installing cwm manually. I will probably use the nexus toolkit for its many easy to access features that have saved my nexus 7.

Just so you know, there is no flash counter to worry about here.
Also, this business about lots of things in one place is interesting, as there isn't much to have. Throw everything you need on drop box and you'll always have it. Your recovery img, bootloader.img, system.img, boot.img, adb/fastboot driver, etc. Then you're golden.
I think you're used to things being more complicated. Welcome to the world of Nexus.
This phone does have a dedicated "download mode," just like Samsung phones. A LG tool is probably out there somewhere. Is it public though?

Yes it has all of those options but you don't even need 90% of them after you initially unlock the bootloader and root the phone

And are also a big part of the reason 50 bazillion threads asking "How do I unbrick my Nexus?" exist. Using a toolkit helps you postpone getting comfortable with fastboot and keeping the necessary files handy.
We can go back and forth on this for the rest of our lives. Do it whatever way works for you. I'm done.
Another good thing about the toolkit is that you don't have to download 20 different things. CWM, SuperSU, drivers...it is a one stop shop.

I sincerely hope that this does not come off as condescending, but even as a complete noob, it isn't that difficult to read up on how to use adb and/or fastboot, and learn how the process works. I'm absolutely a noob. I've never taken a computing class in my life, and my knowledge of programming languages comes from xkcd. But after reading a few of the FAQ/101 threads, and maybe watching a youtube video or two, I've learned so much from the community. And if knowledge for knowledge's own gain isn't good enough, you'll also be much better at troubleshooting and less reliant on others to develop things for you.
So I apologize if this sounds like flaming, but I mean it more as encouragement.

About how long does it take CM to have 4.3 available?
Nobody knows. When source is released then the cm team will evaluate and attempt to merge the code.
Just wait patiently or learn how the entire system works and do it yourself.

You read everything you can. You obviously do not need to be trying to flash anything at this point or you will be back here asking how to recover your device. You need to spend at least a few days reading. As far as root goes, there is no method to root yet... It just came out.

BUT, Russell, I agree with graydiggy. Read read read... There are stickies and info threads that tell how to root, unlock, flash.... Know how to do this before you go playing with new versions and CM night lies... and tempting as it may be, know enough beyond a "toolkit" to root, unlock etc... WUGFRESH has a nice tool but knowing is more than half the battle in this case... Enjoy CM 10.1 until you know enough, and they have 4.3 base... With some work, they will be about the same time...

Once you read up on how to flash different Roms you can just flash a rooted Google aosp 4.3 rom

I am using Purity 4.4 + Matrix 11.5 right now.
Now my question is how do you guys update your respective ROMs instead of flashing newer versions through recovery? I tried GooManager but it didn't work for me :-|
You should ask in thread about your rom. If devs do not do OTA update you must use recovery to update rom

It's not hard but sometimes you get too lazy
Simple. Set up VM environment there are simple walkthrough video and once your set up you can pull straight out of the devs or any branch. I do my own when I feel I need to add a feature I do. There are a major variety of bases to choose from. Its much easier than many think. In my opinion its safer as I know exactly what I'm getting. Not to mention an addiction lay within too. Lol Have fun bro. Welcome to the machine. Many new devs are so stoked when the first ROM they build is complete they can't stop. Lol peace.

There are a major variety of bases to choose from. Its much easier than many think. In my opinion its safer as I know exactly what I'm getting. Not to mention an addiction lay within too. I do know stuff about Android development but I am too scared to try that kind of stuff. Can you link me to those tutorials or videos?
