LG G2 opinions? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's time for me to get a new phone and the G2 has drawn my attention. After reading a lot of reviews, there is almost universal praise for its performance and design that I am severely tempted.
I have 2 questions:
1) Any differences between the AT&T and VZW G2? I know the Verizon one has a thicker profile, smaller steel buttons and a wireless charging coil but i'm not sure what else as I haven't used either. Anyone tried both?
2) Is this worth getting or should I save ~$130 and stick with the Optimus G instead. AT&T currently has the OG and the G Pro both at $440, while the G2 is at $575.
3) How do the volume buttons feel? I always had a feeling that if the G2 isn't for me because I tend to press quite hard and since it's on the back, I'm worried about breaking the phone or at least parts of it. Anyone?
Thanks.

1) Yes, one is AT&T, the other is VZW. Otherwise, the things you listed are also correct.
2) Amazing phone, no question. As of right now, this IS the phone to get.
3) The first thing I thought when I saw the G2 would have it's buttons in a different spot was "wtf, thats stupid" But it has turned out to be something that I actually like about the phone, and am almost to the point where I don't know if I honestly want another phone with them on the sides.

Gets crazy hot, screen changes brightness randomly (not auto), onscreen buttons suck, text looks like its floating compared to amoled, greasy back.
Formfactor is perfect, text clarity is amazing, extremely fast, great camera, strong wifi and lte performance, great touch sensor.
Tough call.

really amazing device but i am so doubt that lg will give android or software updates to lg g2..

Way better than the G2 PRO. Battery is insane, way better screen and camera. Back does get greasy because I don't do cases. Feels better in hand. Love the on screen buttons.

Best phone I've ever used. I've bought EVERY flagship the last 3 year's. First phone I ever bought was LG g2x, and that phone was garbage so I was a little biased against LG. Now with this phone I actually paid for insurance because I'm gonna keep it for a long time.

Because 4.2.2 lg custom made is new, only G2 have it. need time to port to the other.
Even G2 still not avail in my country.
The scenario will be same like OG, after OG get 4.1.2 update, in coupled month other phone will get update too. (L5 L7 L9 4X )

Because they will add stuff from G2 into 4.2.2, there is a leaked G Pro rom which has stuff from G2, once they fixed most stuff on 4.2.2 on G2 they will most likely update G and G Pro.

The Note 2 is also only 4.1.2.

For me, this phone is nearly perfect. It's everything the GS4 wasn't. My GS4 used to piss me off because it lagged like crazy all the time. I bought the Optimus G Pro and my ONE complaint about that device was the camera. This phone has a better camera than the GS4 and OIS to boot. LG is a little slow with software updates, but their UI runs fast and smooth and very seldom has issues or is missing features I want. This is my new daily driver.

lg og, as much as I love it, was a little bit of a mixed bag. I've dropped mine on concrete multiple times with not a scratch, someone else on the forums took the phone out of his pocket to find the back glass cracked. depending on which binned CPU you got the overheating could be mild to bad to unusable. the camera wasn't great. had and still has incredible devs working on it. still my favorite phone so far. but lg2 looks beautiful, I'm heading to my att store to grab one on Monday. like someone previously said..seems like this is THE phone to get. I was looking at the Sony z1 but the huge bezels and mixed reviews about the display camera and battery turned me off to it. also concerning lgs stock ui..I find it generally ugly, but it is speedy and feature packed for the most part. I left my lgog on stock for almost two months by choice. that's saying something for it.

I couldn't post a link but if you Google ATT G2 vs Verizon G2 there are quite a few reviews out there.

Droid life has a video comparing them its about 8 minutes and decently detailed

That's the one thing, but I'm pretty confident in LG's updates. After playing with my friend's LGOG for about a month, I've been really impressed with LG. He's a rich kid and swapped it out for an S4 (which I definitely wouldn't have done, because I LOVE the optimus G) but he wants it back so he can sell it (like, come on man, you don't even need it anymore). He just had stock 4.1.2 on it which was nice and fast (S4's day-to-day GPU UI performance can't hold a candle), and that's the thing: it may be saddled with features like TW, but is in a completely different league in terms of performance.
Given that CM10.1, AOKP, ThinkingBridge and PA all made it to the LGOG, it shouldn't be a problem on the G2. Thanks for the responses guys, I'm getting the G2 (my dad might decide on the Note 3 so we can swap back and forth ).

[Q] Should I buy?

So, some people have been able to get amazing battery life out of the G2, but others have had fairly major heat buildup and short battery life issues. I have also seen some posts about lag issues.
I'm deciding between this phone and the HTC One, which I have heard also has battery issues. I currently have an HTC One X+, and the battery, lag, and heat buildup are unbelievably bad, so I'm cautious about getting another HTC device.
What I want to know is, are most people having good experiences with the battery/heat buildup of the G2? Have you experienced consistent lag? Thanks for your responses.
I have experienced excellent battery life 1+ day usage. I've never had the phone heat up at all... Slight warmth, possibly just from my hand...
Sent from my LG-D800 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I haven't experienced any of the issues you mention. The plastic case squeaks a little, but this is to be expected...the s3 and s4 both do/did it. It's literally the only drawback I've noticed. I just ordered a case, so hopefully that'll muffle the sound and it'll be perfect. ☺

I've had the HTC One and the battery life stinks. That's the only reason I got rid of it. I'm thinking of getting this phone tomorrow. Either this g2 or Moto X. I've been browsing both forums.

I just sold my HTC One to get my G2. The One's battery life sucks! The only things the One has over the G2 are: 1. higher PPI screen (worthless since both have pixels so tiny you wont even notice the difference. 2. Front facing stereo speakers. My G2 makes it through the day easily with over 50% remaining by the time I go to sleep. It gets a little warm, but only when playing games...and no warmer than my One got when playing games.
hmm i was also thinking about getting the lg g2. I current have the att htc one x, which is nice and all but i think its time for an upgrade. Im going through the insurance though and theyre sending me out a galaxy s4. Has anyone used both devices, the s4 and the g2? Obviously the g2 is a step up but how does it translate to real world usage? Would love to hear you opinions on both. If worth it ill just sell my galaxy s4 and buy the g2.

Mine was more of a stutter then lag as smooth as TW Roms could make it and got annoying after a while
Playing around with the phone for the past few hours, I am quite impressed on how smooth it is for me.. its like a better TW (might be insulting to the G2 )
I'm in the same boat and considering the g2 or the g pro. Im liking the phablet because I watch a lot of video on my current phone so the real estate is nice. At $99 with a new contract its a steal and I'm due for an upgrade. But I'm also digging the hardware of the g2. Bern lurking between the 2 forums trying to make a decision, but I'm heavily leaning towards the g2.
Lg G2 > gs4 > htc one
I've used them all, and by far the Lg wins. Especially if youre worried about lag and battery life. Screen is also better than the other ones. Cant wait for devs to start posting cleaner roms

In ear? Or the ear speaker? The ear speaker sounds great, the "in ear" speaker probably depends on the headphones.

Like many others, I have the One as well. I also own the S4, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt "the G2 is hands down my favorite".
I do however think that my S4 gets as good of battery life as my G2 though. I just don't like the lag my S4 gets when I load it up with apps.
This is probably not important to you, but the S4 and the G2 sync with my Fitbit flex via LE Bluetooth and the One does not. ?

I'm hoping that the LG Nexus 5 (stock android, either 4.3 or 4.4) will be coming to the G2 shortly after the N5 is released, and when/if its ported to Verizon, it will make the G2 one heck of a device.

Well it is only one generation up from the G4. The screen is arguably not an upgrade unless you dislike amoled. The phone is faster but doubt you'd notice that much IRL. It is a bare incremental upgrade and definitely not a big one. I would not upgrade unless it cost nothing.

Not a huge upgrade, no. Screen is slightly bigger, camera is about the same, speed is slightly faster. I sold my GS4 to go to a G2, but that was more frustration about the AMOLED screen. I prefer the camera on the GS4 but pretty much prefer everything else on the G2.

I say its big because the s4 is just so bad, but that's my opinion based off my experience owning one for two months. But the reason I'm responding to your comment is because you reminded me how I made a hundred dollars the day I got my g2 because I was able to sell my s4 for 330 (literally a few hours after getting the g2) and used an upgrade to get the g2 which cost 230 total Was a good day to be done with that phone, get a better one, and have an extra hundred cash in my pocket.
perhaps the OP could do something similar. I'm sure some sucker...I mean samsung fanboy would give you 300 or more for the s4.
Not having to worry about screen burn in is the biggest advantage imo.

If you own an exynos S4 dont,if its the snapdragon 600,for only 110 go for it.
Do it and yes everything about the g2 is an upgrade the fact that it doesn't have 500 add-ons that you will never use and you need to turn off to save battery life is the biggest thing
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
Do it, I couldn't get througvery full day on the S4 but on my G2 it's a breeze even on heavy use. I was astounded at the slight upgrade in screen size which feels like so much bigger but without the bulk of a Note device. I love the edge to edge display and how my fingers roll off the sides (in a good way, like futuristic).
OK u guys talked me into it. Just bought one on swappable for 490 and sold my for 390. I can live with that. And if the battery is as good as u dak says I will be very happy. Today I'm 6 hours in and have 10% battery left, so I will have to swap to my spare in a minute. Thanks yall

I agree 100% with this statement. I came the G2 from the S4 and this is the best phone that "I" have had. It's also the first phone that I have preferred using a stock based ROM. In the end though, it's all personal opinion.
I came from a S4 as well and my G2 Running CM is blazing fast.
The battery life is allot better as well, even when the screen brightness is 100%.
I'm also coming from s4, no big difference on performance (both running cm 10.2). Moving to g2 mainly due to larger capacity battery
Everything is an upgrade specially the battery. I notice though that the G2 takes a bit more time launching apps but not really by a big margin. Maybe flashing ROMs like stock would improve the G2 but that's not my cup of tea now due to lack of time. I loved my S4 but I love my G2 even more.
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda premium
I have them side by side right now just swapped my stuff over from my Verizon S4 to a Vzw G2 running clean rom on both and I have to say the G2 is quite a bit speedier. I moved over mainly because I was one of the dumb ones who took the first me7 ota and couldn't install any aosp roms which killed it for me.
Love the G2 so far!
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I have both right and still deciding which one to keep.
Have S4 since May and have G2 since yesterday (the new gadget factor is still working in my mind), having 6 days left to return it to the shop.
So far, I think it is a small upgrade and with compromises, and not a few...
Pros - G2
- Slightly bigger screen (only if you root and hide soft keys, otherwise it is actually smaller on real usable space).
- Better Processor.
- Better GPU.
- Much better whites than S4.
- Have a better overall look.
Pros - S4
- Better Amoled screen viewing angles. I'm 4 years on Amoled and just now, looking at a top of line LCD I understood how good its (Amoled) viewing angles are.
- Much better screen blacks than G2.
- SD Card.
- Removable battery.
- Lighter.
- Smaller.
- Slightly Better camera.
- 100% flat screen (great for applying screen protectors).
- Better accessories.
The S4 pros list is longer but for me Screen, CPU and GPU tops anything else and those are better on G2.
The G2 upgrade is that small that in January S5 will be a much bigger upgrade from G2 than G2 is from S4.

Shall I get a G2?

Well, my contract's up in a few days and my Mako is already earmarked for a new home (a friend who had her S4 stolen only a couple of weeks after getting it and is currently stuck using an HTC Desire running stock 2.2) and that means it's decision time (again.)
I'm fairly settled on a G2 (hence my post here) but I just wanted to see if anybody has any specific advice for/against. It seems like a bad time to be buying a new phone, with a round of new releases having just come up. However, I have zero interest in the S5 (I hate Samsung, although mainly for inflicting Exynos and its buggy drivers/kernels on the world, plus I ideally want a camera with OIS) and I'm very dubious of the Z2, knowing several people with badly scratched/broken Xperia Zs, and the G3 isn't due for a few months yet...
So between the Nexus 5 and the G2, I can't really see any downside in going for the latter. As much as I love my Nexus 4, and I prefer the design of the Nexus 5 to the G2, the effective cost to me is the same so I may as well have the bigger battery and better camera? I might lose fancy LG camera features by running AOSP/CM on it, but I'd be no better off with an N5 in that regard, anyway?
The new HTC one may be worth considering too.

It's a possibility. I have been very fond of HTC devices in the past, so I'll forgive them for the POS that was the One X. However, I wouldn't buy one until I knew that S-Off was a certainty after that experience (although that appears to be a given on Qualcomm devices.) From what I've seen so far, the M8 is going to be another phone with a large physical outline, a huge bezel and a small-ish screen. For that reason, the current One really never appealed to me, especially when you put one alongside the G2 and realise it's almost the same size but with a notably smaller screen...

Haha. Well, at least it's not on the back. Of a completely flat-backed phone :silly: That and the camera are really the only thorns in the Nexus 4's side as far as I'm concerned
Actually, it'll be quite strange adapting to the normality of laying my phone on its back, rather than its front when placing it on a flat surface, as you have to with the Nexus 4 if you want to hear it ringing!
I would go with a nexus 5 its basicaly a fully unlocked g2 some people report bad battery life with the nexus 5 but flash a different ROM and it should have better battery life the g2 has good battery life but its stock software is a joke and not only that no recovery for the kk update maybe no root as well but nexus 5 is as easy to root as as it is to turn the phone on

If I was going to keep it stock, I'd get a Nexus 5 no questions (but who here does that?!) But with both running CM/AOSP-derrived ROMs, I can't really see much downside to the G2 aside from the glossy plastic? As I understand it, there is a hack to install TWRP on the G2, and then I'm free as I would be on a 'real' Nexus.
Of course I'm a little bit worried about losing some functionality (e.g. the multi-shot night mode on the camera) but it's not like I'd get any of that with a Nexus 5 anyway...

I think that probably depends on your definition of crap. I've had over 5 hours of screen-on time out of my Nexus 4 and I never felt it's battery was inadequate (in fact, it's the best smartphone I've owned yet in that regard) and everything I've seen suggests the Nexus 5 manages the same or better. The appeal of the G2 for me comes from its extra battery capacity
I have both the N5 and G2 and I must say while the N5 looks pretty, the G2 does everything else better.
I'm talking battery life ,cool little features (if you like those) and the back buttons are actually awesome.
One thing about the N5 is it is a gamble when you get one. The screen may have very yellowish tint and the vibration motors suck really bad.
Imagine two swords making clashing sounds in a movie. That's how my Red 32GB N5 sounds. So I gave it to my wife...

Have to admit LG have gone beyond to make it so you don't need to use the buttons that much other than to adjust volume which they are in the perfect place, it's nice not having buttons you can press by mistake when putting it in your pocket something that happened a lot with my one x.

I had the same dilemma, whether to get a G2 or a Nexus 5. Got the G2, it was my best decision ever made. Seriously, the G2 is the better choice here. It has bigger battery, better camera, better screen-to-size ratio, name it. The Nexus 5 isn't bad, but the LG G2 is the clear winner, at least for me. If you get it, you won't regret.
Geeee twooooooo
I also have a question that will help me decide if I'll become a G2 owner. Basically I've narrowed my choices to the G2 and Note 3 out of the options out there. Both have their drawbacks and strong sides but this one topic is difficult to find info about - headphone sound quality while playing music.
One of the main purposes of my smartphones are to replace other portable music players and I like quality. I listen to Flacs or minimum 320 mp3s and this might be the decision maker for me. I've heard good things about the headphone sound quality in the Note 3 so how is the G2? Does anyone have experience of both to compare?

The G2 comes with average earphones, but it offers software audio enhancements, including an equalizer with built-in presets. If you are really into music and want the best of quality, you should get third-party quality headphones, since those that come with the G2 won't blow your mind.

CM/AOSP derived roms on the G2 are buggy. It's a fantastic device on stock based roms but if you prefare the 'google' look then I would say it's a no no.....IMHO

I would suggest you look at the new HTC one. If it's anything like (or better than) the original HTC one, the native flac playback is awesome (with beats enhancements turned off of course )

I just got my G2 earlier today and so far I'm loving it. I too have a Nexus 4 and love the Google experience. I was looking into the N5 but the battery life really turned me off. The screen on the G2 is gorgeous and while I only have half a day under my belt, it already far surpasses the battery of my N4.
I was thinking of waiting for either the new HTC One or possibly the Xperia Z2, but with the G2 being really cheap at T-Mobile right now I didn't feel like waiting for the new devices and then paying north of $600 off contract. Also, the G2 is just as, or close to, as powerful as the new phones that are coming out this year so I feel very future proofed.
Just my two cents, good luck!

[Q] confused in buy G2 or N5

Orinal D802 version has all 442 updates, works fine. But i use cloudyflex 2.3 rom. All fine.
Get the g2. I have it as my main phone and the n5 as my travel phone. I keep wishing for longer battery life and better camera on it.

i had a black g2 a few days ago, i traded it with nexus 5, used te nexus about 2 or 3 days.
the battery life is a real difference that you wil notice (im a heavy user) .. the camera yes is somehow seems old to me.
performance: i didnt find a major difference. the great RAM management of the nexus is better but i didn't feel the g2 slower or something. of corse vanilla android is a familiar experience and has its pros
in hand: the nexus make you a little bit confident, better grip due to the Mat back. really confartble to use , especially with one hand. the nexus is way confertable in hand.
by the way, ive sold the nexus Yesterday cz i couldnt resist the offer ($)..i had money in hand and wanted to buy a new phone. head to the store, saw the htc M8, Htc M7, samsung S5, htc one max, note 3, xperia z2......many many phones in store......... i looked at the LG part, saw a white G2.. absolutly irresistible !! took it and payd the guy...went home... got internet..updated the g2 to 4.4.2....rooted it... ignored the 18 months warranty card hehehe.... xposed framework..& VrooOoooMmm VrOOooMmmM ...felt the same feelings when cruising in my '79 Pontiac Trans Am Muhuhahaha

Looking for new phone

My S3 is on its last leg. Buddy at work was saying get the g2 or maybe wait for g3. Going to stick with Verizon though.
One of biggest concerns with s3 is GPS has been awful for a long time. Even my Google maps nav loses signal all the time. I need s good GPS as well as a good all around phone

Did more research. Going to go g3. Like the features that I have been reading about it. Dying to get definite release for Verizon

Verizon? look here http://evleaks.at/2014/05/23/lg-g3-verizon-wireless/
at least Verizon's G3 will be (almost, f*ckin' ugly logos) the same as other versions.
G2 to G3 is a evolution, not revolution, but both phones are awesome, i mean, G3 WILL be awesome
because G3 is on Snap801 (at least Korean version) then G2 should get the custom ROM with new UI very fast, I also hope that G2 will get new UI officially.
What's snap801. A type of processor?

Yes - Snapdragon 801

From experience, get a good case (I use Spigen Slim Armor). The G2 is an awesome phone, the best bang for the buck, but due to such small bezels its main trade off is fragility. Even a small drop hitting in a corner will shatter the screen, as the plastic edge deflects into the screen before it rebounds on impact. Looking at the G3 I think its the same. Having said that, definately get a G3, LG always gives more/better features/hardware for lower cost than the other major companies.
If you have patience wait for G3, if not or your phone is almost dead buy a G2. I got myself one yesterday. Battery life insane, GPS measures so accurately that honestly I cant believe it...
i love my g2. its big enough but not too big and the hardware is really good. I use the cloudy flex and my battery life is amazing. 2 days with wifi and bluetooth in daily use.
