[Q] Bad storage reading - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've got a nexus 4 here, running paranoid android 3.9, and my storage is just not right, When I calculate the taken up space by stuff like music, apps, others I should have a bit over 3gb of free space. And my phone says I've got 1gb. Any idea of what might be the problem?
I'll post a snapshot tomorrow when I get to the computer, for some reason it doesn't wanna post it from a phone.
Thanks!

Free Space Disappeared after upgrade

I upgraded to 4.1.2 successfully this morning but noticed that my free space bass dropped by over 2gig.
Prior to upgrade I had around 4.8 free now only 2.2.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour?
How can I recover the lost space?
Thanks
Jon

That's kind of odd. Have not seen that before. Try this, download es file explorer from the play store. Bring up the menu go to manager and then hit sd card analyst. That should tell you what is taking up space.

This is a well known issue on some other device's, the SD card becomes sort of corrupted. The "lost" space is only accessible again once a factory reset/format has been done
A bid example is the HOX, people were claming to have like 8/10GIG!!!! less than they should, this space is called "Dead Space" and the cause is yet unknown.
Your only hope is to factory reset im afraid, sorry !
Hope this helps

Actual storage space for apps etc

I wanna buy a 8gb nexus 4 but I want to know how much of this can I use and how much is taken up by system, some users say about 4gb will be useable for apps etc and the rest is used by system, if so then that sucks
I also like to know would I be able to buy it with my debit card from play store, cause some users wrote that u need credit card

The Nexus 7 had something like 5.92GB of usable storage. I'd expect the same out of the Nexus 4.
Actual Usable Storage
Hi Guys,
I put together a list of the actual usable internal storage of different phones so that we can compare and see which one has how much. This can be found on:

Let me know if you found it useful!

[Q] How much internal storage?

Hi,
I'm planning to buy Nexus 4 but I'm afraid that 16 GB won't be enough for me. So I wanna know exactly how much available space does the 16 GB version have?
Thanks in advance
Guessing around 13 like most devices
I want it exactly
It's kind of hard to know exactly without checking the storage right when you receive the device, but I think roughavoc's estimate is pretty spot on. It might be a little less than 13 depending on apps. For example, my Samsung Vibrant is 16GB running JB, but it has 1.25GB for app space, and 12.76GB for USB storage (general purpose like music and videos).
12.92 GB. Exactly

Use the app Disk Usage: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage
When you use it, make sure you click /data not just sdcard because /data directory is more accurate for checking storage
Thanks,
CWM backups take a bit more space then the ones on my old phone, where they would be around 500mb and on my nexus is around 2gb

Storage question

Hi all - not sure if I'm installing or not deleting old information correctly but I anytime I put a simple rom, my 32 SDcard only has 24 available gigs of storage.
Am I installing something wrong or do you lose 8 gig right out of the gate? That seems like more than I'd expect.
I've googled for an answer but it's a weird issue - any help is appreciated - thanks!!
Im guessing you are talking about the phone version with 32gb internal storage? If so, I also have 24.8gb available space. I'm guessing the rest is reserved for android etc itself.

Yeah - I guess it takes 8 gig for firmware/OS - didn't think it'd be that much. Thanks.
