I am not so frequent ROM switcher but whenever I do it's little pain and frustrating because I am newbie. I used so far Mybackup Pro and Titanium Backup Pro to backup and restore apps and data.
But I wonder if there is clean and easy way of doing it? I mean recently I tried GE4.3 ROM from stock and when I was restoring apps it was failing with mybackup pro (no apps restored whatsoever) and with titanium backup pro multiple apps failed after restoring.
Also if there is anyway one can restore all accounts (gmail, yahoo, skype etc) rather than manually entering every time you switch a ROM.
Help/inputs are appreciated!!
Thanks in advance and Thanks button hits will follow!!
Here's a trick. After you've flashed a rom and it's booted up, boot back into your recovery and restore just the data portion of your most recent nandriod. It'll bring back all your apps and settings. Works almost all the time.

You mean in TWRP just select Data and deselect all other (Boot, system, Cache.. etc?)

Nope. Same thing may be worst. Almost froze everything. Multiple system app failed ( Unfortunately process <bla bla> failed). Launcher failed.

The roms should be from the same base, ie tw or cm,etc If your going from a tw to a cm it won't work well

I've backup of stock ROM and the ROM I am trying to flash is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2349077.
Should that be a problem because stock rom is 4.2.2 and this one is 4.3?

Stock rom is touchwiz, the rum you flashed isn't. That's why it isn't working. If you restore from titanium, don't restore system data, just restore apps.

Is there a way to transfer all my settings/apps/data from one ROM to a new one? Because every time I flash, it's a blank slate. I'd like to keep all my apps and stuff that I have installed on my current ROM but put it onto a newer ROM. Is it possible?
make a nandroid backup taht way when you flash if you dont like it you can restore your last image, or if you want to transfer your contacts go to People>hit menu>import/export to SD
Titanium backup.
well nandroid doesn't back up my apps and wallpapers and stuff... oh well
Nandroid does backup your apps and data. It backs up an exact image of your phone the way it is when you back up

No, its for every ROM... Thats why its called NANDroid. It backs up the entire NAND for later use.

It backs up whatever info I have to lets say attn1's Liberated Aria ROM. Ok, I back that up in nandroid, then I go to flash the clean eclair beta v2 one. It says to wipe and then flash. Ok, then when the flashing is done, its clean and none of my apps are there. I want something to back my info up from one ROM to another.
well with some roms, (this is experimental and doesnt work with every combination of roms) you can use nandroid for an advanced backup, and restore only the data partition(which is your apps, settings etc.). but it doesnt work with every combination of roms. but you can also use titanium backup to just backup apps, and settings etc.
Alright, that's what I needed to hear. Thanks

Contacts - Should always save them as "Google contact" so they automatically go into your contact list after logging in on your phone.
Messages - Go into market and search "SMS Backup" back it up then once you install your new ROM, download the same app again and restore it.
Apps - Use Titanium Backup to back up the apps. Then install it again after flashing and restore the apps.

Sure is. The simplest way is to make a backup with Clockwork recovery before you install the new rom and do wipe of data/factory reset, and all caches etc...
Once you have flashed the new rom, while still in Clockwork, goto Backup/Restore, choose Advanced, choose the backup you just made, and select only Data from the list. Everything you've asked for should be restored. Some widgets will not work on the first boot, you will have remove them from the home screen and re-add them.
Some apps will behave as if it's the first time you have run them, be aware of this.
This method makes for the simplest method of restoring everything that gets wiped when you install a rom that requires a full wipe of data + factory reset.
cool thanks, I got both methods done. gonna try to flash now. thanks

Does the backed up old data integer with a new rom/kernel though? I've been tempted to do this, but I'm worried that the data will conflict and cause issues.

Indeed, this method saves a lot of time.
I've had no issues using it, aside from widgets not working, until you re-add them to a home screen.

"Integer"? Did you mean integrate? or perhaps interfere?
I haven't had any issues using this method. I'd imagine any conflicts would be overwritten by the nature of restoring /data. If a rom author includes some .apks inside of /data, those will get over written. It's very easy to add them back though, just strip them from the roms zip, and copy over to the phone, then install.
I find this much easier than using Titanium Backup or some other app to restore apps and settings lost due to installing a rom.

While that seems to be perfect as far as restoring (and it does restore everything.) I seem to be having a problem with it once I run my rom, I'm having issues with sms locking up and the phone not coming out of sleep. I'm using Epic Exp 1.2.02 and Phoenix 1.43.
I've reloaded and restored date 3 diff times and still no luck..

Are you using SetCPU, while also having it set to something other Conservative mode? Try keeping it set to conservative. Also, SetCPU doesn't play nice with the Epic if you use a "Screen Off" profile. I don't have a solution other than to not use a Screen Off profile in SetCPU.
Boot recovery. Wipe data cache and dalvik (unless your rom requires somthing different) flash your rom/kernel. Reboot your phone and test. Determine whether the issue is with the rom/kernel or with the data restore. If the issue is the rom, head over to the rom's thread for support. If its not the rom boot into clockwork and try to restore data again. Maybe do an advanced restore?

Thanks dever76 for that tip, I now can switch to nightly builds on my Nexus. I appreciate it!
Forgive my ignorance.
I am following randyshear's excellent video and just rooted for the first time and wish to flash viperrom 4.0.2.a.
The only question I can't find an answer to is whether I can keep all of my data intact (my email accounts, the apps I've downloaded, etc), or whether this process will completely wipe out my data?
Maybe I'm already on the right track? I booted into clockwork recovery and selected "backup and restore" and made a backup to my sd card. I copied this nandroid backup to my PC. Will I be able to "restore" this after I flash the viperrom?
Thanks and sorry for the ignorance!
I prefer Mybackup Pro over Titanium.
Yep, my back up pro, or the free root version.

Or once you install your new ROM, you can boot back into recovery, go to backup and restore, then advanced restore, and just restore your data. This should restore all of your apps, settings, sms, ect without messing up the ROM.

I have flashed several roms several times waiting to find that ultimate rom that I cant live without, everytime i have had to try and figure out how to get all my data back, will this method work without fail? have you done this before. please let me know, if this is true you will have become my new hero. thanks
If you are coming from 2.1 or any other rom then data restore can cause fc and stabilit problems. I'm not saying this happens to everyone on every rom but it has happened to me multiple times after wiping data/cache 3 times flashing the rom, booting, clockwork data restore etc.. I generally don't try it anymore as it caused more problems than it solved. Just my 2 bytes.

Hi
I´ve flashed a new rom today (MMuzzy Rom) and did a backup (NANDROID with TWRP) before.
Now that i wanted to restore my device i just wondered that there are still no apps.
Then i noticed the download icon on top and noticed that my phone downloads now my 123 apps ive installed before - i mean how far is this the sense of a NANDROID backup?

The question is wether the restore pushes the files from pc to the phone or just downloads the apps again from the play store

That wasn't Nandroid. That was Google, and it was just the apps, not the app's data.

If you did actually do a backup in TWRP, you should be able to enter recovery then perform an advanced restore of some sort and restore the data partition. I don't use TWRP but I imagine it has similar functionality to CWM so there should be a similar option somewhere.
OK i guess now its doing its nandroid restore (i chose Restore Nandroid Backup with custom recovery in Root Toolkit). All apps show up and none have been downloaded. Im just wondering why its actually taking that long (ten and a half hours and counting)
I canceled the restore now and doing ist right now in TWRP so i guess i shall restore everything except Boot (i´ve flashed a new kernel) and system (i´ve flashed a new rom)
Edit: Now its stuck on booting for like 10 minutes - what shall i do?
Currently using latest Philz Recovery (problem existed on other recoveries as well) and I'm unable to fully restore from backup. After restoring I get non-stop force closes and not responding errors. Only fix is to perform a Data Wipe after restore, which isn't so bad since Restored Rom is intact even if needing to reinstall all apps and settings from scratch. Problem started after updating via stock recovery to OTA/MJA, which has tripped my Knox. I have tried several things, including clearing cache and battery pulls Wandering if anyone has any suggestions.

You have to check process SE context JB 4.3 settings in philz recovery UNDER misc Nandroid settings before making back up
I also uncheck md5 box, but it's all preference I guess, as long as you check the 4.3 box you will be good to go

I was able to restore successfully from 1 backup after making change (above post) but problem came back when trying to restore from a more current backup made with the settings. Still had to perform a data wipe after restoring rom.
Edit: I just checked and this setting doesn't stick after rebooting, which explains why subsequent backup/restore had errors.
