Hey, I got a droid x, and I want to know if I can hacktivate it and use it on 3g without paying. I know this is possible on an iphone, but can android do it? Thanks

So what you want is to have actual minutes, data, etc. without a package? Just want to make sure I'm reading this correctly.
I know that my unactivated Droid X still connects to the Verizon towers, it just doesn't do anything.
If you just want to use the phone for surfing on Wi-Fi, Google Voice, etc, you can bypass the activation by touching the four corners of the screen in a clockwise direction starting with the upper-left when it says to touch the Android to activate.
In most cases, it'll re-request activation each boot, but this can be dismissed by simply pressing the Back key.

So i doubt this helps any, or if its already on here some place, but i just left the verizon store. After some shmoozing i was able to extract that # #program loads up the eptm? Menu for the droid x. Default password 000000 as usually. Now here's my question, on old phones i was able to make it look like my tethering was phone usage, any way to do that now? Haven't got a chance to play with the menu yet as i'm walking back from the VZN store. Also, reason i was there in the first place the new "update" crapped out my phone kept restarting an fcing freezing...

I just bought a new unlocked HTC MyTouch 3G from Newegg this past President's Day weekend,
"contract free". The specs list it as having Android OS v1.5:
newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875502055&cm_re=mytouch_3g-_-75-502-055-_-Product
I intended to just use my existing T-Mobile prepaid account and just enjoy the phone using wi-fi. The problem is, I cannot log into Google using the phone b/c I don't even see wi-fi as an option. One of the big reasons I bought this phone was to use wi-fi to get my apps. I don't need 3G service.
So what can I do?
HTC MyTouch 3G unlocked (white) w/ 3.5mm jack
This phone doesn't offer the option of enabling wifi to login to your Google account during the startup. It also won't let you get into the ROM without logging in. You should be able to purchase a one-day data plan with your prepaid SIM for $2 from the activation menu to get logged in. Everything else after that you will be able to use wifi for. If, for whatever reason, you need to do a factory reset in the future, you'll have to do the same thing again.
EDIT: Secondly, I highly suggest reading through this post to learn a little bit about your phone.
there are ways around the Google sign in. just search Google I did it on my friends Droid. I think you tap the 4 corners of the screen in a certain order

That's still talking about the four corners trick which doesn't work on stock ROMs, and that's also talking about a custom ROM which a totally different ball game. If he was to root, he could simply bypass the login screen by hitting home and enable wifi, but where he's sitting at right now he'd have to use the goldcard method (which means having to borrow a friends phone running Android to make the goldcard) which is a lot more time consuming then just dropping two dollars on a day pass.
Yes, where there's a will there's a way, but in this case the way is the one I provided. Trust me, I've been heavily involved with this device for a while now (well in electronics time).

alright, I surrender to your superior advice. I agree I know nothing about the mt3g or GSM android phones.
all I know is that the 4 corners trick worked on my friends OEM Droid and I suggested that it may also work on the mt3g.

Funny thing is, once I was able to borrow a friend's SIM that has a data plan associated to it, and login to Google on the phone, the wi-fi was then available.

Rooting the stock rom does not give you free hotspot capabilities. The stock os has a way of knowing if you try using 3rd party wi-fi hotspot apps from the Market and Verizon may send you a nasty letter to cease doing that.
There are however a bunch of custom ROMs that will allow you to use your Droid X as a mobile hotspot without getting hit by Verizon with the nasty letter and/or an additional $30/month hotspot charge.
If you really love the stock os and still want to have free wi-fi hotspot/tether capability then you could use a custom sbf file created by user wugfresh over at the droidxforums website. I don't think I can give you the link here but you can do a Google search for "WugPacked GB Tether Patch" and it should come up as the first link in your search results.
I've used this for a while in the past and it worked great for me.
Okay. Thanks.

yeah thats the problem everyone has been having
I'm surprised there's not more activity on this. Has anybody looked into exactly what it would take to get this working on a non-AOSP build? Or is this just such uncharted territory that we don't know where to start? I'm obviously no dev, but I would assume we'd probably be able to get this working prior to getting an actual Jell Bean build stable on our devices. Hell, I'd buy a beer for the person or people that can get this working!
Got it on my Atrix running CM9. Running nice even without voice search. You can still use your keyboards voice search.

Every time I launch it I get a "Network Settings" error [which doesn't seem to be service effecting(except that it closes the google header and only brings up the text box)], and it won't allow me to use my keyboard's voice input (Stock AOKP keyboard). It will pull up info cards and set reminders and such, but it's not quite as flawless as all the review videos I've seen.
Hey guys, just thought I should check in. Seems like this forum is beginning to die. Has anyone got any new things that they would like me to test on my continuum?
Yes, I will have somethings to beta hopefully releasing mid next week, this weekend is my last week of work. So I'm freeing up my weekends again to get back to deving more...

Why doesn't grove ip work? I use that on my dna sometimes.

Groove ip works but not with the default dialer, was simply trying to streamline the look. It actually works really well, so right now I'm just asking more for improving aesthetics.

Well I don't think it does use stock dialer at all. Stock dialer uses verizons ish. Groove has its own operations and google voice to call and text just uses voice. I'm pretty sure u can take out the dialer and just use groove and voice

Also thought I should share my nifty sms app I have been using.
It's called ninja sms and I got it for 1$ at the play store and I love it. Should check it out of you text quite a bit and don't want to continuously change between apps. It allows the sms to come up on the screen. Kind of like multi boxing on the s3
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
My lcuid 2 has that ability where the text will pop up and allow me to respond, delete or view without leaving the app. It is a super awesome feature.
Yeah I wish my dna had it stock but ninja sms is good for me.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
Does ninja have a character count? My pop-up has a character limit, if I go into the native messaging app I can type as much as I want and it will break it into multiple messages, the pop up only allows for a single message response. I haven't decided if I like that or not. I guess it really depends on I can use that to tweet.
When I text I can send more than 120 characters and on my screen it only sends as one message. You could try it out and always refund if you don't like it.

Yeah just took a look at it and sent a large message and it sent as one huge message and didn't split into different messages. You can view a text that is more than 160 characters as long as it was sent as one big message. I don't believe it has a limit. As far as I can tell it doesn't split it up.

So I really like the way ubuntu looks. Since my dna is locked and I have no access to unlock or root the phone via software method all I can do is jtag, however I'm not going to do that so I can't flash anything. Since I love the way ubuntu looks I decided to theme my phone after it using a launcher and a ton of custom widgets. Here is what I came up with.
