Just wanted to share what I learned yesterday and thought it could save people some time looking this up.
The Galaxy Note 2 supports both 11-pin and 5-pin micro USB connectors.
The USB OTG (On-The-Go) adapters only come in 5-pin, and works fine with the Galaxy Note 2.
I connected the OTG adapter to a USB hub, which was fine, and 2 different devices worked fine independently, but not both at the same time. My guess is, it is a power limitation that the Galaxy Note 2 provides through the micro USB jack.
If you want to buy a HDTV (MHL HDMI) adapter for the Galaxy Note 2, it is the exact same adapter for that Galaxy S3 that is 11-pin, even though the model numbers are different. 5-pin MHL adapters (for Galaxy S2) don't work on the Galaxy Note 2.
The HDTV adapter comes with a micro USB jack (5-pin), but although you may think it is a great idea to plug an OTG cable in there, it doesn't work that way. You MUST plug in your power cable. Why it was hard for me to find this info on the net or a youtube, I'm not sure. I guess I should have read the manual, but I think was more of a design thing. You wouldn't read a manual on how to plug in cables for plugging in HDMI cables and micro USB would you?
I can only get 1080i working at 60Hz even though I know for sure my monitor does 1080p. If someone can get it working with 1080p I would like to know how smooth it is. [email protected] is actually pretty smooth (I think 60 fps). Maybe I should have waited for the Galaxy Note II MHL connector? This is gonna bug me until someone chimes in.
Only putting this information out there because some of this wasn't too obvious, and maybe it will save you time. I also did a review for the OTG cable for the Galaxy Note 2, and another review for the OEM MHL HDMI HDTV adapter connected to a Galaxy Note 2 in this thread:

I just came across this post and wanted to say THANKS. I was looking for exactly this information recently and you are so right, it is very difficult to find. So thanks for putting this up. I Guess I'm still not clear why you need a 5 to 11 adapter. Is the Note 2 micro USB either 5 or 11? And the power cable that comes with it, is it also either? But the HDMI powered unit requires 11 plus a plug in to power some power source. Rather confusing. Seems like Samsung didn't put the engineering time into this that they did into the Note 2 itself, which is an amazing piece of engineering. But this whole HDMI solution is rather clumsy IMO.

Also a big thanks to OP for sharing. will be linking to this.
From my research (research doesn't = im right. Only confident) the Note II is an 11 pin micro usb. To achieve the best performance and functionality OTG and other adapters are best when 11 pin micro to whatever your going to. This means if you use a 5 to 11 conversion your only using a few available pins for a specific purpose. Essentially the Note II smart hub is taking advantage of the extra pin set on the 11pin micro that allows for in, out and multiple usb connections. The only thing it wont do is voltage out but that probably a good thing.
EPL-3FHUBEGSTA HDTV Universal Adapter (11PIN)
That is a direct 11 pin micro to HDMI from what I can tell . Sometimes voltage is used via HDMI to carry signal and smart control. I believe this is setup specific since some of the newer equipment doesn't rely on the extra juice. So in this case the need for a power supply is situational but not required 100% of the time. I would guess that its a good idea to use it when available though unless strictly not advised by a TV manufacture. The feed rating is usually in the user manual of your TV in the input details. Or simply ask the manufacture directly. Im sure a video/audio enthusiast has much more accurate data on voltages and HDMI so I wouldn't take any of this to heart until someone more official confirms or corrects this info.

I have an amkette 7 port usb hub powered by a 5 volt 2 amp charger. So if I connect the 11 pin mhl adapter to the note 2 and connect the supplied usb charger to one of the port, and plug in to the mhl hdmi adapter, I think it ought to work. Now my other query is if I plug in a few pen drives or hard drives, will it be detected?

Unfortunately it isn't that simple. On the Note 2 and GS3 it's looking for a specific resistance value to determine if a MHL device or OTG adapter is plugged in. I'd you want to do both that's a smart hub. I'm midway threw my hack project of this now. It has been done already but using a 11 pin to 5 pin adapter hacking that then strapping a 41.2k resistor on it and some soldering. Let the usb hub do the powering and your good.
My version is just more complicated version of the above so not going to go in to it till its done
I made the mistake of buying the MHL HDMI 5 pin adapter that came with the 5 to 11 pin converter (ETC-EIA2BEGSTA)
I couldn't get it to work. Even with the 5 to 11 pin converter it wouldn't work? It would be a $40 waste of it doesn't.

How is it going with your project?
I'm really curious if it is possible to connect a TV, a keyboard and mouse "the cheap" way, without either buying a (in my opinion) very expensive smart dock, or bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

I am also following the topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142357. But as you said, they use an 11 to 5 pin converter. I also do not want to use that (although it works and in last case, I´d rather that than the U$99 smart dock). So, if you have the specs I also wanna build one. Please post here you journey.

Thanks !. I had looked for these info for a long time to choose the right MHL adapter for my GN2.
So I chose the official S3/GN2 MHL adapter and it works fine.
Note that the new GS4 adapter seems to be compatible with the S3/GN2, even if the new capabilities of MHL v2.0 standard are not usable on the GN2. So it's probably a good idea to go for that new one (same price), in case you plan to change for a GS4 (or a GN3 ?)

I am also interested in a split cable (USB OTG on 1 side and MHL on the other), which would be more practical than the big smart dock (that I have bought too )
I have solved my problem. My phone is a phone now and for my tv I have bought a Mk809 iii android tv stick. It supports all my hard drives even the ntfs ones. It plays everything. Now, if I can only find a way to root it...

Hello,
I am also looking for a similar smart dock with USB-OTG, Charging and HDMI output for my potential buying of Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. I believe this tablet does offer the same via standard 11-pin micro USB connector (instead of the propreitary Samsung connector used in earlier models). Please see my thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2566345
I was able to find a couple of smart docks, which are adverstised to work with GNII/III and Galaxy S3/S4, all of which I believe do have the 11-pin micro USB MHL connector. Please have a look at the following
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Smart-Multimedia-Dock-HDMI-USB-Dock-Station-for-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-2-Galaxy-S4-I9500-S3/1439104485.html

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Multimedia-Dock-station-for-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-II-2-N7100-S3-S4-with-audio-out-and/1422156460.html
All of them are advertised to do all the functions simultaneously at the same time , that is "OTG + HDMI + Charging".
So based on the collective knowledge of the members on this thread, I need to know
1. Does any of you have tried this or a similar dock and found all functions to be working simultaneously and satisfactorily.
2. By a long shot, since S3/S4 also have an 11pin micro USB connector, have any of you tried or can comment on whether this dock would work with a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablet. Theoretically and technically , i think it should but need your advice.
Thanks for reading and your feedback.

So Finally I got what I was looking for on internet. I was really disappointed for not finding a clear technical explanation for the new micro usb pin configuration of samsung devices, and its relation with MHL adapters and micro usb converters.
Just to make some points clear:
Note2, Note3, S3, S4 devices are all have 11-pin micro usb output, which means if you have an old MHL Adapter with 5-pin micro usb you should use a 11-pin - to - 5-pin adapter,
otherwise if you have MHL 1.0 (designed for s3 - 24Mhz refresh rate) OR MHL 2.0 (designed for s4 - 60Mhz refresh rate) you don't need pin converters.
For other samsung devices (Note1, S2, ....)supporting MHL feature but having 5-pin micro usb output, you can either use a compatible 5 pin MHL adapter (old versions...) without need of any pin converter, OR buy (MHL 1.0, MHL 2.0) and use 5-pin - to - 11-pin converter.
Summary
11-pin devices
S3,S4,Note2,Note3 <=> 11pin micro usb
MHL 1.0, MHL 2.0 <=> 11 pin micro usb
5-pin devices
S2, Note1, ... <=> 5 pin
Old MHL adapters <=> 5 pin
Mix and match between those two different pin configurations you need to use converter from 5 - 11 or 11 - 5
source of information

Sorry for bringing this post back from the dead...
But...
So I'm already aware of needing the converter for the 5to11 or 11to5 pin in regards to the MHL adapter. My question - is there any benefit to having an 11-pin micro USB cord (as in, should I begin to purchase 11-pin [if available] micro USB cords for all my devices to obtain such benefits [data, charging speed, etc...] or is the 11-pin fad only with Samsung and it's purpose is geared towards data transfer and the MHL adapter?
I'm a little confused on the matter.

Ever since the OQO, I drempt of one day carrying a PC in my pocket. That day is finally here.
You can use the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as a PC (computer), straight out of the box, no additional apps or hacks required. But you do need the right cables. A list of things you need is at the bottom.
I connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and then I connect a 11-pin MHL HDMI HDTV adapter. With the split-screen multitasking capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, it outshines all smartphones, and even most tablets in this regard, but it is not without many flaws.
There isn't a menu button on a standard mouse, when playing hardware accelerated video there doesn't seem to be an option to not only output video on the TV monitor, the Samsung keyboard is required to be enabled when using a Bluetooth keyboard, so it pops up whenever you click with the cursor.
Using a smartphone as a PC computer is an ability that is many years in the making. With all those minor to major annoyances, it is still near flawless at it's most essential task, which is web browsing, Flash works 95% too. The web browsing experience is leaps and bounds any web browser on any smartphone. You can definitely quote me on that. Spent about $80 on accessories to put this video together. Hope you appreciate it!

speaking of MHL, is the MHL built into this phone, or do we need to MHL adapter, similar to what HTC phones need? Or do we need just the MHL cable without the adapter?

- videos taking up the monitors full screen instead of split screen

I really appreciate the video and made a thread on it in the Nexus 4 forum here on xda :good:

Wow, thank you so much for doing that. I totally appreciate it!
As for keyboard popup issues, I think Samsung just needs to push out an update and remove the requirement to have samsung keyboard enabled when using the bluetooth keyboard.
As for videos taking up the full screen. I'll let you know if I find a solution.
I guess 'bluetooth null keyboard' on market could help you with the keybord popping up issue....

External Keyboard Helper
Get this from the play store, it is the best way to sort the Bluetooth Keyboard issue by far. Been trying out different apps, but that one works perfect.
Even pops up whenever the BT KB is connected to let you select it and then again on disconnect.

I use the allshare cast instead of the mhl adapter. Works great!!
Jump Desktop is a great VNC client for my arm devices (chroot, touchpad, & raspberry pi) and splashtop works wonders on my x86 ubuntu box and associated VMs.

Yes. If your status is modified neither MHL nor Allshare Cast work. Triangle Away really helps here, though you do need a stock kernel.

Am I missing something? Mhl works fine in a modified state, I have perseus kernel stock rom and rooted

It doesn't work for me unfortunately. If I am modified it will connect and immediately disconnect.

Bluetooth can be buggy with so many revisions, that it would be impossible to say all keyboard mouse combos would work. Anecdotally, I haven't had a problem.

I think you can also add soft key on the screen to bring out the menu/home/return function

i know the older phones had it but i tried it on my cell just now and nothing =\ any ideas on how to get it working? i did read that we have mhl 2.0
Let me google that for you....

Works for me. You need the 11pin adapter the old 5 pin will not work. If you had one from the SIII it will work.
Works fine. I used my 11pin adapter from my s3 and it's good. Amazon has 5 to 11pin Samsung adapters for about 9$ or if u don't have an mhl cable get the 11pin.

the cable being used in that video works on the S4 also
As I noted earlier my 11 pin adaptor works from my S3 works on the S4. I tried the adaptor without attaching the power cable and it worked on the S4 so we must have MHL2.0. With MHL2.0 the phone charges through the HDMI cable. Samsung has a new adaptor for MHL2.0 which is backward compatible for the S3 an Note II the one thing I don't know is if the 11 pin S3/Note II adaptor allows charging. I will have to see by using it with a longer Netflix show.
Ah cool!.... I tried my Infuse 4G MHL and it didn't work....
Cool the GS3 works
I received mine yesterday, have been testing it all day, everything looks fine, no significant lag. One thing I cannot test out is the MHL function. I tried mt MHL adapter, it does not work at all. Can anyone help me test if this feature exists or I got a lemon?

Yes, it does.
This is the adapter I am using that I had bought for my Note 2 (I'm sooo happy Samsung decided to go with Micro-USB on this device).

It might be the older 5 pin version when the newer Samsungs have moved onto 11 pin adapters.
You could either upgrade or get an 5 pin to 11 pin adapter.
On a somewhat related note: Does this tablet have miracast support?

The Samsung all share cast works as long as unrooted.

I tried the Samsung HDMI adapter I bought last year for my Note 2. It works for the Note 2 but not Note 3. The HML adapter will show like a dark snow effect and without it on it is a blank TV. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the TV resolution :/

I'm sorry but I am not following this thread very well. If I want to connect my 10.1 2014 to a HDMI TV what exactly do I need (as has been confirmed to work)?

I haven't tested it but It works with my S4, says its compatible with Note 3 and Note 8 so should work on this.
I haven't tested this on my new 10.1 2014 yet, BUT
It works great on my Galaxy S 4 so I'm confidant it will work. I normally don't order generic and always go with Samsung OEM, but since it's near impossible to find a genuine Samsung one for a reasonable price I ordered from mycablemartDOTCOM since I LOVE their HDMI cables/adapters.

Hope this helps someone!
My Note 2 adapter works just fine!
I purchased the note 2 adapter from Samsung and it works perfectly with my 2014 edition!
bought this but doesn't connect
Cable Matters Micro-USB to HDMI MHL Adapter in Black and Charging Cable in Black 1 Metre* from Amazon.
It connects straight to my htc one x but not my galaxy 10.1 note.
Is it just not compatible or do I need to change settings on my tab?
My mhl works fine that I got for my s4. It also works for my note 3 with the USB 3.0. Since the galaxy s3 you need a mhl 2.0 adapter. They have extra pins. The old mhl won't work on newer Samsung devices

The catch being it is a battery drain. Net negative even when charging. You can not even watch a complete movie if streaming Netflix on the S4.
Near worthless as a result on the S4.
I recently put a new deck in my car, and the ONE reason I spent the money I did on it is because of the MHL capability. Now it seems all these new phones don't support MHL. None of the newer Samsung do, and it seems if I'm trying to get one of the top competitor phones, MHL is no longer an option?
Did anyone see/read/hear of MHL being a thing on the 6P? If it turns out that MHL isn't an option stock on this phone, is MHL a thing that can be added via a custom rom, or is it purely hardware?
Thanks for ANY and all help guys!!

Haven't seen any news of it, but can confirm there's hardware required as the USB port is different (at least on regular micro usb phones, NFI with USB-C). I can't even plug an MHL cable into my S6, whereas friend with Note 4 it all works easily.
M.
That's kind of what I was thinking as well. Apparently they got rid of the MHL support completely in the S6 and Note5 Line. I read that they don't even have MHL in the Nexus 6.... So I'm really afraid they might not have it here either.... Kind of sucks I guess.
I am about ready to tuck a Miracast adapter behind my dashboard. Then there's no fussing with cables or anything

An alternative solution is chromecast has screen mirroring support. Tested it last night with the new chromecast app. Worked very well.
Chromecast needs the phone to be a hotspot and have internet connectivity at start up. Works if the conditions are right, so depends on where you live.

Only bad thing about that is there won't be a way to charge the phone at the same time.
and it does not work. Apparently google took the easy road and implemented only USB2.0 with USB Type C.
This means faster transfer speed - bull
Fast charge only because of qualcomm quick charge 2.0
No alternate modes (MHL, HDMI)

They mentioned in their Q&A, that the usb is 2.0 because it's always on and 3.0 takes more power apparently.

From what I understand, this phone does not support Qualcomm's QuickCharge. Every Google page on this phone says "Fast Charging". That's freaking bogus, too. It's part of the Qualcomm 810 processor. Why the heck not??? If the hardware is in there, its possible it could be enabled through a kernel tweak. No guarantees though.
And for that matter, that processor supports wireless charging through metal. Just give me DISPLAYPORT!

Unfortunately, it does not support "Quick Charge" Everything Google has said is "Fast Charge" which is not the QC standard. All your chargers you have now, are slow and useless to the 6P.
