[Q] Custom ROMs and themes? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I recently made the switch from an iPhone 4 to a Nexus 4 and all this is very unfamiliar to me...just wanted some clarification about themes/ROMs.
Themes...are these essentially from custom ROMs? Like if you wanted a certain theme, you would install that specific custom ROM?
Thank you!

First off, I just have to say well done for making the right choice! .
Anyway, you can use any theme with any custom ROM.
If you use a Cm 10.1 (android 4.2) theme on a android 4.3 ROM it may have a few slight issues.
But overall, any theme will work with any ROM .

Most themes use the t-mobile theme engine (found in ROMs like CyanogenMod), these themes can be found on the play store (type cm10 theme). But custom launchers like Nova can have themes and icon packs and you're free mix match around
Look at the post your home screen thread over on themes and apps for inspiration

[Q] stock theme on custom rom?

hey xda!
i really like my g2. it gets used so much more than my iphone. its my first android phone so i've been learning a lot but i have a few questions i couldnt figure out on my own.
how would one change the theme on a custom rom to the theme from stock? are there any custom roms that don't have a black default theme?
also i can't seem to get barnacle wifi tether to work on the stock rom. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list works but it doesn't support wep which i need.
Yes there are roms not themed black. Most roms don't have theme options at this point. Just run a custom rom you won't be disappointed. Are you fully rooted? Stock roms blow that's the reason you root I use barnacle all the time on the custom roms with no issue.

JKAY mods are must !!!

I am so eager to try a custom rom like RR-2.6 but I think jkay mods are must for better customization then I wonder why do people flash custom roms in which JKAY can not be flashed like RR-2.6

The JKay framework along with the Deluxe Settings app allow you to customise and configure the UI of your phone in much more detail than the standard options.
I wouldn't be without it!
:good:

Different people have different tastes, in this case i like cm9 and sometimes i like stock roms with jkay. It's a matter of preference buddy.

Dude (sarubah.2561) the level of customization that is provided with AOKP roms is not worse than the one being guaranteed by JKAY mods. AOKP roms don't need JKAY-mods. They includes most of these options by default. You just must dig little deeper
A custom from can either be a Samsung rom or AOSP rom
jkay mod work only on Sammy roms.
AOSP roms like cyanogenmod 9 or aokp (rr remix 2.6 is based on aokp) have customisations build in like jkay stuff and even more......Jkay mod will not work on these....and their is no point really.
And if u want to take your device to another level flash paranoidandroid rom by D4rk and moles. Not only it has lots of options and stuff to play with since it is based on cm9 but you can switch everything you like between tablet mode and phone mode together with the dpi.Not only you can change the whole UI but also individual apps such as YouTube,Gmail, people etc.
Jkay is an awesome dev but try out other custom aosp sauce.

You don't need to flash themes like ICS Domination etc on CM9, they have inbuilt themes and you need to install it as an apk. Most of the settings which JKAY provides are
built into CM9/AOKP.
The only thing I saw in that video thats not in CM9/AOKP roms is the quick launch panel which I think looks kinda ugly. I'll stick to using my swipable dock bar in Nova Launcher. Apart from quick panel toggles, what else can you do with Jkay mods. Haven't used a rom that had Jkay built in since the hyperdroid devs stopped adding it to their roms

yeah,,,i got it that most of the mods are built in AOKP but my main concern was notification bar modification specially that quick launch panel which i think is very convenient...

it use to look good in the GB days ma8, and now people r looking for more than that hence AOKP and AOSP has gone way ahead in terms of customization compared to Jkay
Aokp and aosp don't need jkay but if ur using Sammy ROM then jkay is absolutely necessary otherwise the ROM is useless
I like to stick to Sammy ROM coz I feel it has better battery life than any aokp or aosp ROM out there and plus I miss WiFi direct and FM in these ROMs
And if I feel like getting a near aosp experience I simply flash ICS domination with some soul bound goodies

I also intend to do the same,,,i mean sticking to stock (rooted) with--
--bloat remover
--jkay mods
--ics domination or something like that
Except UC/OC and other cpu/gpu related features we can do everything in a rooted stock rom,,,am i right ?
You can OC/UC, change GPU clock settings and all, in a stock ROM, if you're rooted with Siyah. Maybe other kernels are there, no idea.
And staying on Stock ROM will save you the hassle of flashing this and that patch frequently to use some basic features. But some people like the hassle, some flash junkies. Pick your choice.

This and that patch to use basic features? I flash my AOKP rom. It installs......done. No other patch needed unless I'm adding zip file themes
JKay is the best thing to happen to mobile phones since touch screens! I wouldn't even consider switching to a new ROM if the JKay mod wasn't available.

[Q] Advice for a ROM

Hi guys...
I have a N7 16Gb from october and I think thare's not a real reason to change the rom on this device...except the tablet ui and the general fun to make it!
Well...
I'm not here to ask you guide etc. but an advice.
What custom rom do you advice? many talk about Paranoidandroid but I try it on an old Galaxy Scl and it was pretty horrible and unstable...but on nexus seems the rom most supportend and with much more feature...
Or I'm attracted by the Dirk AOKP that seem pretty good....
Beside this....it's difficult also the kernel decision...
Franco Kernel? or M3 or Trinity? I'm not interested in overclock...
thanks to all in advance
no one?
No one is answering because there are a ton of these threads asked all the time. There is no best Rom or Kernel. Try searching and see what features you like or what sounds interesting and then just install it and see for yourself.
I personally like the Omega 3 kernel, OC is optional and it has just about every scheduler/governor you could possibly want. Performance and battery life are pretty much on par with the other top kernels. I haven't tried any ROMS mainly because the 2 I flashed ended up boolt-looping. So I am using the stock with some pretty major tweaks. I am a DEV on other sites and once I jump through the hoops to be able to post in developer forums I will be posting my own ROM. OC is for people who don't know how to optimize. *cough*

Modaco custom ROM (currently version Jr13) is light, mostly stock, extra features that help me are- prerooted, enhanced power menu, tweaked youtube app for video preload, enhanced quick settings panel, comes with gapps etc.
Modaco cyanogenmod custom ROM (currently version r4) consumes more processing power, based on CM 10.1 so has all its features, prerooted, more enhanced power menu(with screenshot and extended desktop options), tweaked youtube, enhanced quick settings(devoid of vol control), comes with gapps, comes with cyanogenmod file manager etc.
MCR Jr13 and MCMCR r3 are interchangeable with dirty flash so I get to retain all my apps.
M-kernel (currently a33 version) gives me ample undervolting option (lp, cpu, gpu, ram), and I can set minimum brightness with rootdim, so I can extend my battery life.

Don't know why people make thread to ask others what's best rom, kernel... Answers will be different from users and depends what they prefers, so it'll be difficult to make a choice because every answers won't be the same. What I did when i wanted to choose was reading threads and try by myself to see what I liked. Sorry if my answer will not help you to choose but it's the best i can advise you. Hoping you find what best suits you.
Phone: GT-I9100P
Kernel: Dorimanx
ROM: 4.2.1 Vanilla RootBox
Tablet: Nexus 7
Kernel: M-Kernel
ROM: 4.2.1 AOKP PUB
MOD: JusTunBean
Xenon
Im usin Xenon HD its a 4.2 rom (aokp base) and it's very customizable for your likes. You should give it a try.:cyclops:
If you are doing any ROM other than stock, I suggest AOKP for sure. It has a ton of mods for your ui and allows a lot of customizing. Make sure you get 4.1.2 milestone version and get your gapps as well or you won't have necessary files. Hope this helps look in the aokp official thread for download

thanks to all...
all advices are really usefull to understand the mod world...
I was intent to install an AOKP rom, but I don't really understand the difference...
I would like to try the the paranoid but i think is AOSP...
for AOKP I don't know what rom to try...I see the Dirty AOKP but I'm not sure....
There's also one called smooth ROM check it out, you should search YouTube to see if you like it. personally I'm back to the to the 4.1.2 stock rom because on aokp it wasn't allowing me to install some APK's from the play store that i really wanted. it said they werent compatible with my device when I knew they were compatible with n7.. I wish there was a way around that but nobody on here would tell me if there was or not when i posted a thread asking... anyways hope you find what you are looking for and I do suggest checking YouTube first for custom Roms for nexus 7 before flashing over hella different ones it would take less time, peace and good luck!

CM/AOKP theme chooser on stock?

I was wondering if I can just copy the theme apk to system/app on stock rom and will it work or will I need to flash a cm or aokp based ROM?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Hi, i need that too, i'm happy with ROM Stock from Google, i use Franco Kernel for battery life but i just want a way to be able to use any theme.
Could anyone tell us about that please ? Is there any way to do that ?

Please suggest a ROM with dark theme .

Hey GUYS,
After using my phone for a solid 2 months, I am now ready to root this beast.
Will be using WRT to do this...
Just wanted to ask, which ROM would you folks recommend for a Dark Theme and lots of customisation options?
Your advise will be greatly appreciated.
You can pick any ROM with CM Theme Engine or Layers and can choose any dark theme you like!!!:good:
I think CM has the best themes. Or as previously stated any rom with CM theme engine.
If you go on G+ and look at the "BitSyko Development" community, there's a guide on how to run Layers on stock MM if you wanted to go that route.

CandySiX! Best ROM ever! Dark theme (go to CandyInterface/Display) - has lots of customization options too.
You can use stock Rom + Layers Theme, and choose dark themes!
