Problems after 4.3 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
after rooting and before installing my first ROM I installed CWM
as my custom recovery and made a whole backup. Now using Cyanogenmod
for some time I decided to restore the Backup I made before, to install JB 4.3
Restoring worked fine but now, when trying to go into recovery mode
there is this red little bang with the green android guy. Also when I try using
apps that need root access they won't work even if fastboot mode says
my phone is unlocked. The root seems to be gone.
I tried installing CWM again using the N-Cry toolkit, but nothing changed.
Please, please help !

Recovery Woes

Hi all,
So coming from a Samsung craptivate, Im having a little bit of trouble flashing CM 6.1.1 on my new N1
so far starting from stock I have
- Unlocked the bootloader
- used fastboot to flash the latest clockworkmod
now I am trying to boot into recovery to flash the CM zip on my SD and I keep getting to a screen with the android guy and an exclamation point, and have to do a battery pull to reboot, I have tried using adb and 3 button combo to get into clockwork,
so, what idiotic thing am I doing wrong?
You're booting in between installing the recovery and booting into recovery.
There are two files that restore the stock recovery upon a system boot (which is what you are seeing). If you go straight to recovery after flashing, the stock recovery won't be restored, then you can install a custom ROM.
The two files are missing from custom ROMs, so you won't have this problem again.
Typically, people remove these files once they have root access, but since you don't have root yet, that isn't an option...

thanks very much for your help, got it working
Reading the Wiki guides for installing recovery should have solved your question before you wrote it.

My backups are not working....

Ok so first off I was successful in rooting the phone, installing twrp rec., flashing loki files, and then flashing wicked rom with ktweaker tw kernel. I made a backup of the stock rooted rom before wicked was flashed. Then my troubles started when I wanted to go back to my stock backup. The rom booted but has serious issues like black screen with only status bar working and then eventually freezing. I also made a backup of a working wicked and tried restoring that but then I just get stuck in boot loop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
what twrp version
did you wipe all before restoring
you could try to install Phils cwm recovery, folks say it works great and will restore twrp backups also

Follow full wipe procedures, have the same recovery you made the backup with, and try again.

I flashed the stock firm. Soft brick averted. Did the same goo manager recovery method, but now i'm thinking of flashing that cwm as ppl have reported the same nandroid backup issues with twrp. My version is 2.5.0.2. I will keep trying to get twrp for a while with others users till i get sick of it (semi twrp fan). Any further advice would be cool. Oh and I did a factory twrp wipe the first time this problem occurred.
I wipe data caches and system before flashing. No more advice. Had newest TWRP hang on Team Win screen. Several manual reboots into recovery till it worked. Maybe I better do restore to see if it works.

[Q] Rooted, custom rom installed but not booting anymore

Hello,
Ii have rooted my S4 device with the procedure from XDA (root original rom with keeping update availability). This was done succesfully. After that TWRP was flashed without problems. Than i decided to installl Omega 9 custom rom. The installation went fine and i could use it for three days. A great rom but after a restart my device will not boot anymore and shows only the Samsung logo. Wiping is possible but trying to restore a backup failed....... Do i have to apply root again? Any help is appreciated to solve my problem! Thanks a lot.
Best regards,
Mark

I reflashed Philz Touch with ODIN successfully but the recovery mode did not came up. How is this possible? Back to TWRP now with same problems......
If you already have the omega 9 rom in your phone...try to reflash it via recovery .....don't have to wipe data....but do it to be safe....I think it should work...I really hope it works...sorry about your phone

Well the only other option is to download a ROM that can be flashed via Odin.....hopefully your download mode works.....i think you can find several compatible ROMs in the forums.....try that out....as a last resort

Well, download mode works fine, TWRP works fine, flashing ROM works fine, ROM itselfs works great, until i have to reboot. After booting it hangs in the boatloader and i have to flash rom again.........................to get access.

Well do you merely flash the ROM? try wiping cache afterwards and setting permission....if that doesn't work try to reflash stock firmware....thats your best bet

I have discovered that I need it too because my phone is loked and, to enter my carrier unlock code, i need to restore my backup made with CWM.
Looking for the same.
Yesterday i have installed 2ndInit to get back CWM recovery and restore my original stock ROM image.
Android can not complete the full boot, showing the intro of my carrier during a hour while loading Android.
Reinstalled TWRP and recovered my CM11 backup.
I will try again and, if not suceded, i will flash my carrier SBF to unlock my phone.
I will inform any news about CWM restore stock ROM.

I think this happens because the roms use different file systems
Try the Aroma Wiper to change the file system:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2202674
I'll try this, but now i'm without time, then i report if it work.
I got my phone working.

About revert to stock ROM, only doing a factory reset to format my data partition fix the boot (I did not try AROMA or safewipe.zip).
I do not tried to restore data from my stock dump after got my phone working because it was not my objective, but i think that it is possible and simple after get it working.
Thanks.

TWRP not booting system

I tried to factory reset a custom ROM, got sent to TWRP then I can't reboot to system from there. Tried a clean install but to no avail. I've looked around on the internet and I think I have to reinstall stock ROM and then reinstall custom recovery and ROM, except if I were to install the stock ROM once again (with sp tools) I need my phone to be turned off, not in recovery mode. So how exactly should I proceed now?
EDIT: Managed to get rid of the TWRP bootloop by restoring from a stock nandroid I've found on the forums, coupled with flashing a stock recovery image using TWRP. Reunlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP all over again and then flashed custom ROM and Gapps. Everything running fine now.
